  5. A UK-based drug charity, The Loop, has issued a warning about unusually strong MDMA pills circulating in the UK. Several recent hospitalizations have prompted the charity to urge clubbers to be cautious. Test results from various batches of pills — Pink Timberlands, Purple Louis Vuittons and Purple Pop Smokes — revealed that one in four pills contained significantly more MDMA than a typical adult dose. In fact, double the standard adult dose, which means 200mg of the substance. Fabric nightclub in London has also issued a statement urging patrons to prioritize their health and seek assistance if they feel unwell. The club’s welfare team is available to provide support and advice. “Significantly raised temperature, excessive sweating, muscle rigidity, and non-responsiveness or seizure” are all symptoms to be aware of. “A typical heavy/strong dose is around 200mg“, Fabric say, “but some of these pills are reported to contain over 300mg which creates a strong overdose risk. If in doubt, please don’t take it“. In recent months, The Loop has issued multiple warnings about the strength of drugs circulating in the UK. They launched the UK’s first regular drug-checking service in January and have alerted the public to concerns about counterfeit benzos and strong MDMA pills. 10. How can today's generation of electronic music producers stay authentic in a highly saturated market? In the age of social media, when viral content strategies and hollow traffic-drivers often take precedence, borne urges artists to remember the importance of the music itself. "I notice that people crank out a few songs and then immediately go to the marketing or pushing it on on TikTok," borne tells EDM.com. "I think people forget that the most important part is the music and creating a story." The 22-year-old breakout's hot take on music production? Today's artists need to "let the music speak for itself." "There's a lot of 'dopamine hit' content, which gets people interested for a certain amount of time, but then they lose the engagement," he explains. "Trying to create a story and focus on the production itself is the most important part." With so much content constantly bidding for attention in an endless stream of ads and memes, today's listeners struggle to focus for more than a few seconds. So he felt it was paramount to call his music pseudonym something classic and timeless, ultimately turning to his own last name to derive his pseudonym. "I was trying to find something that I wouldn’t regret in five years," he says with a laugh. He felt a humbling, full-circle moment wash over him in May, when he was featured in a mix by the deeply influential UKF brand. As a teen, UKF's releases framed his approach to electronic music through the lens of timeless tunes from dubstep luminaries like Zeds Dead. Being featured in a mix alongside the iconic duo made it even more meaningful, he said. He then dropped his thumping, 140 BPM dubstep heater "Control" via UKF in September. View the original article to see embedded media. The artist's exposure to electronic music in his early teens "turned on the curiosity factor," inspiring him to play with Virtual DJ and ultimately buy his first controller. From there, he started experimenting with music production around age 14. A Montréal native, borne attended the city's beloved ÎleSoniq Music Festival but had never went to any other major fests until Shambhala last summer. That event also happened to be where he played his debut DJ set. He says he was initially drawn to rave culture because it sets the stage for a full spectrum of unlimited self-expression and creativity. He also felt inspired by the level of teamwork involved in taking the overall vision of an event from an idea to reality. In order to produce a successful event, an array of factors have to meet at a creative collision point, including visual art, sound and stage production. That process intrigued him. When analyzing festival culture and the overall spirit of dance music, borne said he's enthralled by the "family tree" of influences that stem from industry pioneers who paved the way for EDM and its subgenres, creating a textured web of innovation and interconnectedness. View the original article to see embedded media. Those layers of innovation and inspiration ultimately led him to heavily experiment with his style and sound in the past eight years. "When I first started, I used to just stack stuff and have a bunch of layers because it made it feel bigger and louder. Over time, I learned that less is more," he explains, laughing about the "chaotic" start to his discography. "I experimented with everything, and I think that’s important for every producer to do," he adds. "Dip your toes into everything and then see what you really enjoy doing." Now, borne describes his signature sound as "minimal" and "bass-oriented." His goal is to infuse every arrangement with a heavy dose of intention, from the bass to the percussion and everything in between. The producer's work is paying dividends. His style has led him to major performances, like an upcoming headline set for Atlanta's DEF collective, and collaborations with some of bass music's biggest names. Of all his recent collabs, he says his unreleased track with PEEKABOO, one of EDM.com's best music producers of 2023, means the most. "I've been getting more into 140, deep dubstep style, which is one of [PEEKABOO's] specialties. It's always nice working with like-minded producers," he said about producing the hotly anticipated ID. "It was like, let's just make whatever and make it natural. I was also really grateful he brought me to be a part of the Denver show at Mission Ballroom. For him to bring me out for that and share love and support, I was so appreciative." View the original article to see embedded media. When peering into his metaphorical crystal ball, borne embraces change for the music industry, like the influx of AI. He said he can imagine certain AI applications benefitting young, aspiring music producers. "It would be cool to use AI for project breakdowns, like showing how a song was made or how the individual sounds were made. If tech like that was a tool when I was younger and trying to learn, it would have been extremely beneficial because you’d learn faster, as opposed to just figuring out yourself." He's aware, however, of the nefarious aspects of generative AI in the music production world. "The whole point of music is the humanized effect," he explains. "You see how many different options and sounds there are, because it’s through our ears and it's very personalized. If someone goes about making music through AI, it's going to be algorithmic and you can see exactly what's going to happen. The possibilities aren't as endless in that sense. I do feel like people will recognize the humanized songs, but we'll see." Leaving aspiring producers with one last piece of advice, borne says it's crucial to "take lessons out of failed attempts." "I'm a firm believer that the music speaks for itself," he says. "Remember, even if it sounds bad, the whole process you went through to make that song has probably taught you a lot. Try to find small wins. It doesn't always have to be about like the end result. Try to create a story for people to follow alongside the music." 11. Drop Out EP by Loxodrome Almost exactly 30 years ago in 1994 Jamie Odell released his Loxodrome EP on legendary London label Jumpin & Pumpin, a release that has since gone onto receive a lot of love and attention and got reissued by Craigie Knowes sub label Wormhole Wisdom back in 2020. Fast forward three decades and Jamie aka Jimpster has decided to dust off his Loxodrome cap, and now we’re happy to present you with the fruits of his studio sessions in the form of The Drop Out EP. The title track treads a much darker, more minimal path than we’re used to hearing on his Jimpster or Franc Spangler releases. Aimed fairly and squarely at the dance floor, Drop Out goes heavy on squelching, modular synth sequences which build around a stripped back jacking drum groove. Jamie’s trusty Juno 106 gets dusted off to provide the chunky bassline and ominous pads which are interjected with a trippy vocal sample and white noise fills. Emberfall follows in fine style with saturated 808 drums and 303 acid line taking centre stage. Overall, an optimistic and uplifting atmosphere emits from the speakers, heightened by the Juno string chords, taking inspiration from classic 90’s Italian Dream House. Flipping over we have a dub version of Emberfall which loses the pads and stabs in favour of dub delays and extra snare fills for a more impactful and minimal acidic club workout. Closing out the EP things get lush as Jamie heads into deep, late night electro territory on Fornax A. Memories of Black dog and B12 are channeled through the layers of filtering synths and glitchy breakbeats and are inspired by his production approach and Atari ST running C Lab Creator and Akai S900 – the tools at his disposal when producing his debut Loxodrome EP all those years ago. 12. Just over a month after the release of their highly praised album Kiss and Forget, electronic music powerhouse WhoMadeWho is back with a remix of their collaborative track ‘Heartless’ with Kölsch, reimagined by the talented Italian duo Fideles. This marks the first official remix of “Heartless” and continues the band’s streak of high-profile collaborations and accolades. ‘Heartless’ (Fideles Remix) The Fideles remix of ‘Heartless’ takes a track that blends the styles of WhoMadeWho and Kölsch into an effortlessly beautiful work that creates a calming atmosphere, and livens it up while staying true to its roots. The Italian duo replaces the gentle kick with a punchier, more dynamic beat, infusing the track with their signature grandeur and elevating it to new heights. Fideles offered some words in regards to their remix: “We’ve long admired WMW and Kölsch for their emotive musical journeys. When allowed to remix a track from their album, “Heartless” immediately stood out to us. During a creative session in Ibiza, we found the perfect way to blend their vision of the track with our sound.“ “…The result is a remix that honors the original while bringing our unique touch. We’re also very thrilled with how it’s been received in the industry by our peers and. on the dance floors–it’s a special moment when our remix connects with so many people from different walks of life” Fideles The Fideles remix joins an impressive roster of remixes from ‘Kiss and Forget’. These include works by CamelPhat, Adam Ten, INNELLEA, and Mind Against & Dyzen. WhoMadeWho fans can look forward to more, with an upcoming remix by Alex Wann and an official remix EP on the horizon. WhoMadeWho’s recent success extends beyond the studio. The trio clinched the “Best Organic House” award at the 2024 DJ Awards in Ibiza earlier this month, adding to their “Best Live Performer” accolade from the 2024 Beatport Awards in May. These honors, coupled with the release of Kiss and Forget, underscore WhoMadeWho’s unstoppable momentum. The Music Video WhoMadeWho has unveiled a series of captivating music videos to accompany each track on ‘Kiss and Forget’. It was directed by Berlin-based talent Thomas Kuhn with creative direction by Polina Vinogradova. These visual pieces form a kaleidoscopic journey through time, emotion, and human connection. The videos serve as a unique narrative tapestry. Moreover, it weaves together the album’s themes of nostalgia, eternal youth, and the ephemeral nature of relationships. These melodic titans definitely have a lot of heart. Here is ‘Heartless; (Fideles Remix): The post WhoMadeWho Enlists Fideles for a Remix of ‘Heartless’ appeared first on EDMTunes.
  13. Laurent Garnier is joining the ‘fabric presents’ mix series, and details are now out on this bespoke milestone release. The trailblazing DJ and producer is doing not one but four mixes as he embraces an opportunity to go even bigger for the London institution in its 25th groundbreaking year. A full-spectrum and multi-genre release, there’s a UK-focus, house, techno and downtempo mix. In his words, “diversity makes it richer, makes it better.” Eager to pay homage to the vitality of club culture, his vision is to take us through a rapturous weekend at fabric from Friday through to the afters. Making it even more unique, he’s also dropping an original four-track EP – one track per genre. Garnier: “Clubs have been my second home since the start of my career. Once you’ve witnessed that unique connection you can create in a club with a crowd, once you’ve experienced it from behind the decks, you just know you are where you’re meant to be. This special journey with fabric is of course a tribute to the legendary London club – a place that’s been a home to so many clubbers, DJs and music-lovers for so many years – but most of all, a tribute to all the dancefloors and all the clubs around the world.” Ploughing through hundreds of records a day, it’s no surprise to hear Garnier describe the track selection process as being “complicated”. His enriching trip through fabric spans over five hours with each mix coming in at 1 hour 20 minutes. Across all four, it’s clear that he’s immersed in the present and future-focussed with a majority of the chosen records dropping only in the last three years. The House Odyssey mix kicks off with afro house via South African producer Mr. Blasé, and the vibrancy continues through cuts from Cape Verde to Chicago as newer faces Culoe De Song, Neinzer and Tal Fussman meet linchpins DJ Spen, DJ Lady D and Mike Dunn. In techno, his Rhythmic Resonance mix is searing with high impact moments from Red Axes, John Tejada, Electric Rescue, Works of Intent, and himself as three of his own epic productions feature. A UK-focus underpins Garnier’s nod to fabric’s fervent bass devotees with the Into The Low-End sessionfeaturing Skrillex, MC GQ, Sami Virji and Martin Badder. On The Way Home sidles up to clubbers for a downtempo dust down with stunning explorations from Daudi Matsiko, Adriano Koch, Richie Culver and Melody Gardot, among others. His EP further showcases his mastery of genres. Luminous house cut ‘Odyssée Maison’ is in for spirited dancefloor grabs with Dan Diamond on vocals, while ‘Resonances From The D’ is for techno heads, glued together with tumbling rhythms, soaring synths and scattering hi-hats. ‘Playing With The Low-End’ is the bass-doused maze that looms large before ‘On The Way Home’ brings a shower of orbiting synths. 18. TikTok's relationship with music is undergoing a transformation. Its platform has become a driving force for the discovery of electronic music, boasting a 70% growth in video creations featuring the genre year-over-year, according to a press release issued by the company. Sub-genres like drum & bass, techno and trance have all seen notable increases in popularity. To capitalize on this momentum, TikTok has launched its global #ElectronicMusic hub coinciding with the recent Amsterdam Dance Event. TikTok’s global community is not just consuming electronic music—they’re fueling its future. From remixing tracks to sharing clips from live sets, users are helping artists achieve rapid virality, like EDM.com Class of 2024 member Kenya Grace, whose track "Strangers" picked up steam on TikTok and has since garnered over 1 billion streams across services. Serving as a launchpad for emerging talent and established icons alike, TikTok is amplifying the reach of electronic music artists across the globe. However, while the company is ramping up its efforts to promote music, it is simultaneously shutting down its native music streaming service, TikTok Music. The platform, which launched in 2019, aimed to compete with giants like Spotify and Apple Music but was available only in select regions like Brazil, Mexico and Australia prior to its closure. TikTok, however, isn't backing away from music entirely. Instead, they are doubling down on features like the "Add to Music App" function, allowing users to save songs from the platform directly to major streaming services. This strategic shift suggests that the company sees more value in bolstering its core strength, short-form video creation, rather than competing directly in the crowded streaming space.
  19. In the digital sphere where electronic music mainstays like Kygo and Marshmello once found their footing, SoundCloud is now reporting that fans of the genre comprise its most dedicated, vocal and active community. Released during this year's Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), new data from SoundCloud proves that the electronic genre's fanbase is outshining other music communities with staggering engagement statistics. In an "Essential Insider Knowledge" panel during last week's summit, SoundCloud CEO Eliah Seton and house music producer Mau P revealed fresh insights into the platform's electronic music ecosystem. The community is not only growing in size, but its listeners are also the most engaged of any genre on the platform. According to the data, electronic music fans are 104% more likely to share content, 85% more likely to repost and 52% more likely to comment than fans of other genres. The revelations mark an important chapter for SoundCloud, which almost faced bankruptcy nearly a decade ago. The company in 2017 narrowly avoided collapse thanks to a $169.5 million capital infusion. The platform struggled to monetize its massive user base at the time, with layoffs and office closures threatening its future. Today, SoundCloud's thriving electronic music culture continues to play a pivotal role in its story, helping the company reassert its standing as a vital hub for artist creativity and fan interaction. Trance, hardcore and house, which drive the highest engagement rates on SoundCloud, are leading a surge of activity, with the lattermost genre topping the charts for the most streams and listening time. Global data reveals that countries like Belgium, Austria and Germany dominate electronic music streams while Vietnam is emerging as a hotspot by virtue of its fast-growing "Vinahouse" sub-genre. With over 400 million tracks and a mission rooted in empowering artists, SoundCloud is banking on this enduring connection with electronic music fans to continue shaping the future of the industry. Check out the company's official blog post to discover more statistical insights on electronic music's reach and impact on the platform.

The EP remains a landmark release that redefined the electronic music scene and paved the way for dubstep’s rise to global popularity.
  22. The FTC just approved a game-changing “click-to-cancel” rule that simplifies how consumers cancel subscriptions in the U.S. This regulation aims to protect consumers from deceptive practices and ensure cancellations are as easy as signing up. Music streaming giants like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music, which serve hundreds of millions of subscribers globally, are among the companies most impacted. These platforms will now need to streamline their cancellation processes to match the simplicity of their sign-up systems. The FTC receives thousands of complaints annually about shady subscription practices, and this rule aims to reduce that number. Backed by the Biden administration’s ‘Time is Money’ campaign, it addresses long-standing consumer frustrations. However, some business groups express concerns that the rule might drive up costs for consumers. Here’s what’s in the rule: 1. Canceling Should Be Easy If a company, like Spotify or Amazon Music, lets you subscribe online, they must allow you to cancel through the same method with the same number of steps. No more navigating complex menus or searching for hidden options to end your subscription. 2. No More Deception Companies can no longer mislead consumers with hidden terms. The rule makes it illegal for sellers to lie or misrepresent any material facts about their subscriptions. 3. Informed Consent The FTC’s rule also requires businesses to get your informed consent before charging you for any recurring subscription. This puts more control back into your hands, ensuring you’re not hit with unexpected fees. 4. Clear Disclosure Businesses must provide clear, truthful, and easy-to-find information about their subscriptions. If a subscription has conditions or automatic renewals, they need to disclose that upfront. 5. Multiple Cancellation Options If you subscribed in person, you should be able to cancel online or over the phone with no added hassle. This rule will go into full effect by April 2025. It applies to most subscription-based programs, regardless of the media in which they were sold. Companies that violate this rule could face civil penalties and be held liable for refunds. Two things were dropped from the final version of this rule. Companies won’t have to send you annual reminders about your subscriptions, and they can still offer you alternatives or ask if you want to hear their pitch before canceling — but only after getting your consent first. This new rule is a big win for consumers. It gives us more control over our subscriptions and stops companies from trapping us in hard-to-cancel services. Let’s hope it sets the stage for even stronger consumer protections in the future. The post This New FTC Rule Makes Canceling Subscriptions Easier appeared first on EDMTunes.
