A new documentary film exploring the life and career of the late Electronic music producer Avicii will premiere on Netflix later this year. One of the greatest and most beloved acts of EDM is further expanding his legacy, as news has arisen that a visual piece on his story will come to the website. Titled Avicii – I’m Tim, the film offers a glimpse into the artist’s rise to fame, his struggles with mental health, and his tragic passing in 2018. Featuring never-before-seen footage and interviews with friends and family, the documentary provides an intimate look at the life of one of modern music’s most iconic figures. The documentary will also include a full recording of Avicii’s final performance at Ushuaïa Ibiza in 2016. This performance marked the end of the artist’s touring career as he focused on his mental health and other projects. The Tim Bergling Foundation, established in memory of the artist, will continue its mission to support mental health initiatives, particularly among young people. The foundation recently announced its support for Dance For Life, a Swedish initiative focused on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Avicii, real name was Tim Bergling, was a Swedish DJ, record producer, and songwriter. He was a defining figure in the Dance scene, known for his innovative production style, experimental approach to writing legendary songs, and overall chart-topping hits. Last Friday 1 November, we were spoiled with a 36 track various artists (VA) release which has been curated by OS:MAN, head of Motive Hunter Audio, with an important mission to raise money for Warchild’s Gaza Emergency Appeal. Counting on support from the likes of Tim Reaper, DJ Hybrid, Fez The Kid, Bruk, and Vxrgo, whilst also relying on releases from close friends of the label including Fendi-K, Arkyn, Blake, Agility, and insectcrusha, this project is the epitome of a forward-thinking underground concept that gives a true representation of the flavoursome sonics that create our culture. A coming together of the established with the new is exactly why this VA will mark itself as one of the standout electronic grassroots projects of the year. Varying from their bread-and-butter jungle sounds, to more techno and bass numbers with forays in such through Dusty Dan, smokey.t, and Joycey – all corners of the underground are covered. With such a breakthrough year as a result of a multitude of jungle releases that have been widely celebrated over the course of the last 11 months, it was only right we bring this multifaceted project to the attention of the wider electronic dance family. What’s the deal with the VA then, it’s been a while since you’ve released anything right? So after our brief hiatus from releasing this year following our jam-packed start including the likes of Nectax and Dwarde, Fendi-K and myself, and Tim Reaper, Worsleyy and Cheetah, plus the Bristol lot Fez The Kid, Bruk and Toby Ross. Charlotte de Witte shows why she stays at the forefront of contemporary techno with her latest release, the Sanctum EP, fresh off her spectacular performance at Amsterdam Dance Event and fifth straight #1 Techno DJ ranking in DJ Mag. This release represents an interesting partnership with French soprano Marion Di Napoli, whose ethereal voice gives de Witte’s usually gloomy, driving sound a fascinating new depth. Starting with its title track “Sanctum,” the EP opens with a strong basis for interweaving elements: futuristic synth work, acidic undertones, and Di Napoli’s mesmerizing vocals — thunderous warehouse-ready kicks. Demonstrating de Witte’s developing skill, the work strikes a careful equilibrium between industrial force and spiritual mood. With Di Napoli’s vocals deftly cut and repeated into hypnotic rhythms, “Fourth Dimension” exhibits advanced sound design. Precision-engineered hi-hats and a throbbing rhythm that keeps vitality while providing space for the human element of the vocals to shine through improve the rolling techno framework of the track. The EP ends with “Fugato,” an ambient tune that defies de Witte’s usual dancefloor-oriented production in bold measure. She has produced a work that pushes limits yet stays true to her artistic vision by incorporating Marion Di Napoli’s mysterious voice into her hard-hitting technique. Quincy Jones, the iconic music producer, songwriter, composer, and arranger, has passed away at the age of 91. The news was confirmed by his family on Sunday. Jones’ illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he collaborated with some of the greatest musicians of all time. He was a pioneer in the music industry, seamlessly blending Jazz, Classical, Pop, Hip-Hop, and R&B. His work with artists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross, and Michael Jackson has left an enduring legacy. Perhaps his most significant collaboration was with The King Of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Jones produced three of Jackson’s most iconic albums: Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. These albums revolutionized the music industry, and are, as of today, undeniable works of art, and also a part of general culture. Beyond his musical achievements, Jones was also a talented film and television composer. Netflix has announced the upcoming release of Avicii – I’m Tim, a documentary that takes an intimate look into the life of the late Tim Bergling, known globally as Avicii. Set for global release on December 31, 2024, the film offers fans a poignant and personal journey through Tim’s life and career, showcasing never-before-seen footage and personal interviews. In a unique approach, Avicii himself narrates much of the documentary, providing a deeply personal insight into his struggles, triumphs, and journey as an artist. Hi! Who are you? We are Run Da Riddim, which is Jamaican slang for “Play the music”. Our original founders are Calum Leighton (Leighton) and Olly Ley (Chunk) who became friends at school through their shared love of music. They first started discussing the idea of creating a label at the beginning of 2021 when they were only 16 years of age. Later that year they met Callum Whiting (SEF) who became a co-founder. What’s your ethos? Leighton’s motto was “Let’s make jungle massive again”, so that’s what we want to do. But we are much more than that. Firstly we wanted to create a label so that we could represent ourselves professionally, and then use that as a platform to help other artists like ourselves who were looking to break through and put their own stamp on the D&B scene. But above all, we just want to use our label to express our love and passion for music. Tell us your origin story... Calum and Olly were just having fun mixing in Calum’s bedroom one day and started joking about how it would be great to create a label. We were already big fans of labels like Born on Road and Jungle Cakes so they gave us the inspiration I guess. The discussion moved on to ideas for a name and we quite quickly stumbled upon Run Da Riddim, and then started drawing up concepts for a logo. We later drew a mind map as well with all of our ideas of what we wanted to do with the label which included running events, releasing music, guest mixes and even podcasts. We’ve done all of them since, except the podcasts! After all the planning we wanted a way to officially launch the label so decided to host a Summer Day Event where all of our residents could play, giving some of them their first opportunity to DJ at an event in front of a big crowd. We all had the best day, especially Leighton who had worked so hard to make it happen. At the end of the day we were all congratulating each other saying how this was the start of something special. Little did we know that less than 12 hours later tragedy would strike when our founder Leighton, and two of his friends, were in a fatal road traffic accident. Where are you based? Tell us about your local scene Calum and Olly both went to school in Chippenham, Wiltshire and then went to Access Creative College (formerly dBs Institute of Music) in nearby Bristol to study DJ and Music Production. They found themselves in the heart of the UK’s drum and bass scene with events all over the city every week! There is a real mix of events from large to small, day to night with the full spectrum of dance music represented. We recently hosted our own 12-hour rave at Lost Horizon in Bristol from 3 pm to 3 am, both inside and out! There is no better city to be for anyone with a passion for D&B. All of our residents are based in and around Bristol, Bath and Chippenham. Do you have a specific sound or vibe? We originally started out as a jungle/D&B label with lots of rolling bass and wobbles! But we also have residents that now focus just as much on 140 and UKG so we really are a multi-genre collective these days. Whatever genre we are playing we always want to get across an exciting and energetic vibe! Do you have a regular artist roster? Who can we see releasing with you? We now have 12 residents, including our late founder Leighton, and his sister Darcey (Dar C) who only took up mixing after losing her brother two years ago. As well as Olly and Callum, the other residents are Jacob (JIB), Tommy (TJB), Tom (H3), Beau (Rolla B), Oscar (OP Breaks), Gaby (GMD), Jay (TOFA) and Poppy (POP:P). Last summer we released our debut album called “Sounds of the Jungle” which Leighton had already started planning a year previously. As well as featuring several of our residents, including Leighton, OP Breaks, TOFA and H3 we were thrilled that Euphonique, who had taught Leighton at college, completed one of his tracks for the album. We also featured the shell suit otherwise known as Scuffed who Leighton had met many times on the scene, as well as the vocals of Marns who was at college with Leighton and Chunk. Half of our residents have had official releases now, including on Run Da Riddim as well as other labels such as Jungle Cakes. The other half have been working hard at their production and we are planning a “This is Run Da Riddim” album for early next year to coincide with Leighton’s 21st birthday. The idea is to showcase all of Run Da Riddim’s talent and will be our 21st Birthday present to Leighton and our fans! In the last month alone Scuffed has released two more tracks with us which is really exciting, including a remix of a tune by Omari Banks, a reggae and R&B artist from Anguilla in the Eastern Caribbean whom Leighton had met on holiday there more than 10 years ago. We have actually just completed a mini tour with Omari Banks across 3 different cities (Birmingham, Bristol and London) combining live music from Omari and his band with DnB/Jungle riddims! Scuffed’s remix of ‘No Point To Prove’ coincided with the Bristol leg of the tour and it was a particular highlight when Omari joined Scuffed on stage to sing along live. Tell us about your A&R process… We all regularly attend raves and events which is a great way to hear new talented DJ’s who more often than not are also producers playing out some of their own tracks. We are very active on Instagram and also Soundcloud where we will actively search for new tunes to listen to or play out and so is a great way to discover new talent. Collaborating with more established artists will inevitably help you grow and improve both musically and technically. So we have been reaching out to a number of artists that Leighton had met to finish his tunes which is great for his legacy as well as our label, but other residents have had some great collaborations too such as Rolla B with Deekline on Jungle Cakes. It is something we will definitely continue to encourage amongst our residents. We have actually just created a new email we will be using to encourage people to send us their tunes, so if you think your sound would suit our label please send it our way to [email protected]! We will listen to all submissions and provide feedback- whether we think it might be suitable for our label or not. What makes you different from other labels? The youthfulness and energy of our residents, which isn’t surprising given our founders were only 16 when Run Da Riddim was conceptualised! We all have our own different strengths, favourite styles and genres with a common passion for music, but now we are all galvanised by an even greater passion to keep Leighton’s legacy not only alive, but to grow the label to where we know he wanted to take it. He was such a caring guy, always looking out for others, and was the most passionate person about drum and bass music you could ever meet. He was always radiating positive vibes with a big smile on his face, encouraging others to follow their dreams as he was doing. He was a visionary with so many ideas for the label, and was a very talented DJ and producer with more than 20 projects on the go. It has been two years now and we are probably only just half way through bringing his plans and projects to life. One project is called ‘Bars & Bass’ and the idea is to showcase talented MC’s across the scene. This is one we want to get off the ground next year, so any MC’s out there hit us up! What does it take to run a drum and bass label in 2024? Time, effort, consistency, but most of all passion for what you are doing. It’s not easy and takes up a lot of time. Most of us have full or part time jobs outside of Run Da Riddim, or are studying at college or university, so if you are not passionate about what you are doing it would be very difficult to keep putting the hours in day after day with everything else going on. And it’s not just about having a collective of very talented musicians. You need a variety of skills. Networking is so important as you never know when it will provide your next opportunity, whether it’s finding someone who wants to release on your label, or vice-versa, or to collaborate on an event or tune. It comes naturally to some, but others need to make a concerted effort. We’ve found the scene to be so supportive and approachable though where everyone is happy to help each other grow and celebrate in each others success. Multi-media is obviously very important these days too. It’s great throwing an amazing event or releasing a banging tune, but unless you can showcase that through multimedia it’s much harder to reach new followers and grow your brand. And if you are lucky enough to have someone in-house with the skill and time to do it you can save yourself a lot of money! What have you got coming up that we should look out for? We have some really exciting projects in flight. One of our residents JIB has just released his debut track ‘Turn It’ on the label. The track ‘Move’ by Leighton and Scuffed that we released as a single in August is the first track of our next EP called ‘Dance To The Rhythm’ that we are releasing at the end of November. It features 4 tracks by Leighton that have been completed by other established artists who are releasing on our label for the first time – Jappa, Jman, Toby Ross and Oram. We will be forever grateful for his time and support, and for coming down to Bristol to headline our 12 hour tribute rave this summer. We don’t have a release date just yet but expect a big announcement coming soon! It will also be the first garage track to be released on our label, bringing some multi-genre flavours. "If we think of the future as a story we tell ourselves, two plotlines have seemingly come to dominate the popular imagination," Mangrum writes. "On the one hand, a happy modernist fable of tech-fueled utopia, and on the other a postmodern myth of dystopian collapse." "It’s increasingly difficult to believe in the first [plotline] because we now know it’s built on an unsustainable foundation," he continues. "And we don’t even want to think about the second because it’s a tragedy where no one gets out alive." For veteran Burners and newcomers alike, now is the time to get serious about shaping the gathering's future and allowing it not only to survive, but thrive. Avicii - I’m Tim, an intimate documentary about the life of the late EDM icon Avicii, is coming to Netflix, the streaming service announced in a press release. Netflix will also premiere Avicii - My Last Show, which chronicles the DJ's final performance at Ushuaïa Ibiza back in 2016, per a press release. Ubiquitously known as one of the most virtuosic dance music producers of all-time, Avicii, whose real name was Tim Bergling died by suicide two years later at the age of 28 after grappling with mental health struggles contrived largely from a grueling tour schedule. Examining the last vestiges of his storied career, Avicii - I’m Tim features never-before-seen footage and interviews, with Bergling himself narrating. Directed by Henrik Burman and produced by Swedish cinematographer Björn Tjärnberg and Candamo Film, the doc follows the artist "on a winding journey through life—from the very first breath at the maternity ward in Stockholm in 1989 to the tragic end in Oman in 2018." In other Avicii news, a rare auction of Bergling's personal belongings recently raised over $700,000 in support of his family's efforts to advocate for suicide prevention. 267 of his items hit the auction block and all proceeds benefitted the Tim Bergling Foundation, a philanthropic organization launched in the wake of his death to provide support for young people experiencing mental health issues. Another documentary from the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Lawrence Bender is currently in production and will feature "previously unreleased footage" recorded around the time of Avicii's discovery and rise to fame. Meanwhile, the investment firm Pophouse Entertainment is planning to develop a musical about the DJ after purchasing a majority stake in his catalog. With the countdown to Envision Festival 2025 well underway, it's now hit a snag: an unexpected email blast written by Founder & Creative Director Joshua Wendel with the title "Envision 2025 Postponement: Back To Our Roots for a Stronger Future." "We are writing to share a significant decision we’ve made regarding the future of Envision," the email begins. "After careful consideration, we’ve decided to postpone the 2025 event until 2026... While this is not an easy step, it’s one that we believe is crucial for ensuring that Envision not only survives but thrives for years to come." The news comes as quite a surprise for fans of the beloved Costa Rica festival. Just three months ago the Envision team released "Back To Our Roots," a gleaming trailer video signaling the festival's impending return from March 3-10, 2025. The postponement is a reminder that good things take time, and that we all need a break—even and especially festival organizers. Planning and organizing an international festival of Envision's scale is an immense undertaking. The event has been going strong for 15 years now, and while there have been some hiccups along the way, growing pains are inevitable. All things considered, sometimes the best course of action is to take a pause in order to slow down and return to our roots. Berlin’s legendary club Tresor has reintroduced its mentorship and training program, designed to support aspiring nightclub managers and venue projects. Initially launched in early 2024, this 12-week mentorship course was created by Tresor’s owner, Dimitri Hegemann, along with former booker Diana Alagić and sociologist Martin Fuller. Scheduled from January to June 2025, the Tresor Foundation’s Academy of Subcultural Understanding is open to young adults in the EU who aim to establish venues outside major cities. This five-month program will accept eight selected participants, offering them localized support to network with key industry professionals who can help bring their club concepts to life. Participants will also need to attend two weeks of in-person training sessions in Berlin—one in February and another in May 2025. Accommodation will be provided, and classes will cover essential topics like door policies, security, bar management, and creating a unique club concept. Speakers include in-house staff from Tresor, OHM, and Kraftwerk, personalities and experts from the Berlin scene, local and international guests. The application deadline is November 21. Candidates must be fluent in English, between the ages of 21 and 35, and have a well-developed idea for a club based in the EU.
