Dekmantel Records relaunches UFO sublabel with releases by Wata Igarashi and Piezo
Dekmantel Records has relaunched its UFO series, marking a new chapter in its exploration and support of experimental electronic music. Originally launched in 2016, UFO has been synonymous with the harder, darker, and avant-garde techno sounds showcased on the UFO I and II stages at Dekmantel Festival. After a hiatus since 2022, the series now returns with a refreshed identity by designer Jonathan Castro, and a renewed focus on pushing the boundaries of today’s club music. Today, UFO returns with two simultaneous EP releases, setting the tone for the sublabel’s future. Wata Igarashi’s ‘Kaleidoscopic’ offers a four-track journey through the Japanese artist’s crystalline techno realm, blending ethereal arpeggios, shimmering melodies, and minute shades of acid and breaks. On ‘Ecstatic Nostalgia’, Italian producer Piezo opens a four-track window into techno’s contemporary permutations, weaving UK bass and dub offshoots into a highly kinetic club sound that is equally fast-paced and dreamy, heavy and mischievous. Platforming both techno’s fundamentals and its yet-to-be-defined offshoots, the UFO sublabel aims to further champion the innovative artists featured at Dekmantel’s global events, while also enriching the broader Dekmantel label. “By dividing things this way, we can introduce some differentiation while continuing to release both techno and house, along with many other genres,” says label manager Olf van Elden. “Both sides of Dekmantel are equally important to us—and they can coexist harmoniously.” Looking ahead to 2025, the UFO series is set to expand with releases from artists including Broken English Club and Quelza. Collaboration and Growth: How Music Producers Are working Together to Gain Valuable Insights
All the biggest artists work with paid co-producers, and guess what? It’s a win-win for everyone involved. If a music producer wants to make money without ever leaving the studio, this is perfect for them. Major artists who are always on tour rely on the support of anonymous music producers—often referred to as ghost producers. These collaborators are part of their team, helping with insights, finishing tracks, mastering, and a range of other services. The reason is simple: artists need to maintain a steady flow of releases but don’t have the time to do everything themselves. That’s just a fact. On the flip side, up-and-coming artists who are navigating a sea of technical challenges and unfamiliar technologies benefit massively from paid co-producers. These collaborations act as both mentorship and partnership, giving the emerging artist a guide while shaping their sound for later sell the tracks on platforms such as Traxsource, Juno Download, Boomkat, iTunes / Apple Music Another interesting perspective comes from producers who thrive in the studio, churning out dozens, sometimes hundreds, of tracks without the desire to tour. For these creators, working as a paid co-producer offers a sustainable source of income and the chance to stay creatively active. What’s the Difference Between a Paid Co-Producer and a Ghost Producer? Well, if it’s anonymous, it’s a ghost. The producer hands over the rights to the track, so the client can claim it as their own and add it to their catalog. In the electronic music world, collaborating with paid co-producers (often labelled as ghost producers) has become a clever strategy for established artists looking to add fresh ideas and creative layers to their sound. By teaming up with co-producers, they bring new techniques and perspectives to their projects, often resulting in more dynamic and polished tracks. Alexander Larichev from EDM Ghost Production explains: “Music production today is more collaborative than ever. Digital tools have erased geographical barriers, enabling talent from around the globe to create together seamlessly and efficiently.” Thanks to advancements in digital platforms, remote collaborations are easier than ever, offering practical and streamlined ways to connect artists and producers. This allows creativity to flourish, even from opposite ends of the world. Growth Opportunities for Producers Collaborations like these create unique opportunities for growth. Both sides learn from each other’s strengths and experiences, broadening their creative horizons. This process not only enhances their technical and artistic repertoire but also opens the door to exploring new sounds. According to Larichev: “Mutual learning is one of the most valuable aspects of any musical partnership. One producer might introduce a fresh perspective on mixing, while another brings a unique approach to composition. This constant exchange elevates the quality of everyone’s work.” Collaboration can also drive innovation. When two artists come together, their combined ideas push the boundaries of what’s possible in music production. This teamwork can birth hybrid styles, new approaches, and even entirely new genres. Paid Co-Production: Balancing Taboo, Income, and Artistic Contribution Once a quiet and somewhat taboo part of the industry, paid co-production is now widely recognised behind the scenes of electronic music. For many artists, these professionals are essential in shaping their sound and crafting hits. Ghost producers play a vital yet often unseen role in creating some of the biggest successes in the industry. For producers, ghost production is more than just a job opportunity. It’s a way to stay creatively engaged and contribute to the global music scene without the pressure of public life. Larichev elaborates: “Ghost production is a conscious choice for many creators. It allows talented producers to work on high-profile projects while maintaining their privacy and financial stability.” This model creates opportunities for producers to work on major projects with renowned artists, often contributing to tracks that dominate global charts. It’s a testament to how the industry is evolving to accommodate diverse artist and producer profiles while maintaining high standards of quality. Tools and Initiatives That Foster Creativity Larichev, who has a strong background in developing tools for music producers, emphasises the role of technology in making music creation more accessible: “Our goal is to develop solutions that not only simplify the creative process but also inspire artists to explore new musical territories.” These tools go beyond production software, offering platforms for collaboration, tutorials for learning new techniques, and social networks tailored to producers. Together, these resources create a dynamic environment where artists at all levels can grow. In the end, the combination of collaboration, learning, and innovative tools is reshaping the landscape of electronic music. As producers and artists continue to explore new creative possibilities, the industry becomes more dynamic, inclusive, and full of opportunities. As Larichev puts it: “This isn’t just about technology; it’s about building human connections that enrich the art of making music.” The post Collaboration and Growth: How Music Producers Are working Together to Gain Valuable Insights appeared first on Electric Mode.

Late Night Therapy’s latest single “Polarity”
Late Night Therapy‘s “Polarity” is a sophisticated electronic piece that continues the artist’s explosive creative trip until 2024. After a run of noteworthy singles like “Caught in the Moment,” “GENESIS,” “ALTITUDE,” “RELAX,” and “Swept Away,” he shows his constant ability to create emotionally complex electronic soundscapes. The music stands out right away for its well-crafted opening passages. With a piano theme that forms the emotional center of the work, the first melodic lines create a clearly cool, introspective environment. Especially remarkable is this piano work, which deftly moves into the vocal parts to provide a natural flow that is both deliberate and easy. “Polarity” exhibits incredible rhythmic accuracy. The track’s disciplined backbone from the clear, sharp percussive components preserves a precise balance between subdued movement and subtle drive. This rhythmic method lets the other musical parts interact with a purposefully created sense of spaciousness and breathing. One finds that the aural environment of the track depends critically on the baseline. Said to be “wide,” it adds a supernatural element that transforms the whole work above a basic electronic tune. This fundamental sound suggests layers of emotional and musical richness that call for repeated listening by generating depth and dimensionality. The title of the record, “Polarity,” seems especially fitting. Between the quiet piano lines and the strong baseline, between the easy melodic approach and the fundamental rhythmic structure, the music seems to toy with contrasts. This dynamic hearing experience produced by the interaction of contradictory components keeps the audience interested. Late Night Therapy keeps proving their maturity as musicians by proving they can produce electronic music transcending simple danceability. “Polarity” seems like a sonic trip inviting reflection while keeping an accessible, melodic core, exploring emotional states. “Polarity” offers a natural progression of sound for those who enjoy the group’s past works, preserving the emotional depth of their earlier albums while stretching their musical horizons. It is a great addition to their 2024 repertoire, further reinforcing Late Night Therapy’s reputation for producing intelligent, complex electronic music. True to the artist’s expressive moniker, the song seems especially appropriate for late-night listening, introspective times, or as a background to meditative events. €URO TRA$H Releases Sexy Sophomore Album ‘House Music For Stripclubs’
Hot off the heels of their last singles ‘Stick Ya Lips‘ and ‘House Music So Good,’ both of which served as a perfect prologue to their 2nd body of work, €URO TRA$H is back with the highly anticipated full album, House Music for Stripclubs. The 13-track project truly encapsulates the raw, edgy, club-friendly vibe of Yellow Claw‘s alter ego. The album is available via their label Barong Family. House Music for Stripclubs From the seductive bass lines of the opening track ‘10 Outta 10‘ to the steamy vocal riffs of ‘Body Pop‘ and the soulful flow of ‘Something Real,’ the iconic Dutch duo knows how to create a vibe that evokes the sexy, fun and always hype energy of the world’s best strip clubs and its community. Heaters like ‘Tie Me Up‘ and ‘Little Lick‘ go out on a provocative limb while staying true to €URO TRA$H‘s spirit, blending heavy sounds and unpolished vocals for an authentic underground vibe. The duo recruited a multitude of talent both on the album and behind the scenes, including working with former strippers and photographers to craft the perfect visual design. Read for all the juicy details on House Music for Stripclubs straight from the artists themselves, and keep an eye out for an exciting tour announcement very soon, which will be the very first official tour of €URO TRA$H. The artists claim they were heavily inspired by stripclub culture, the dirty dollar bills, the hustle of the girls, and the surroundings themselves. Moreover, they mentioned that the first source of inspiration was their friend OGAQUAFINA when they worked the previous album ¥€$.The duo then explained that their friend was great at the hustle, and also rapped with her duo $ugar Babies. They had a studio day with her that was extremely successful, in which she wrote ‘1F2F‘ on the spot. This track inspired €URO TRA$H into what they wanted the project to represent: “The fat, groovy bass lines combined with ratchet club vocals are shown in a very unpolished way. Real shit. That’s the kind of house music we love. And love to make. It gave us our direction for what has become our second studio album as €URO TRA$H. ‘1F2F’ went hard in the stripclubs and saw a lot of footage coming from there. If a song is hot in the stripclubs it’s hot everywhere we feel like. It passed the test somehow, you know?“€URO TRA$H The €URO TRA$H Project Yellow Claw launched their side project €URO TRA$H in 2021, swiftly establishing themselves as a prominent force in the landscape. The releases of ‘1F2F,’ ‘Dipped in $ugar,’ and ‘B€NZ,’ all quickly became club favorites. The alias itself gives them the artistic freedom their music deserves. Furthermore, they ought once more to make sense of their blend of house music, strip club vibes, and underground warehouse party energy. Their debut album ¥€$ made them stand out while simultaneously showcases their versatility. With collaborations such as Los Angeles-based OGAQUAFINA and Wax Motif, Indonesian artists Syaqish and Ramengvrl, Malaysian rapper Lil’ Asian Thiccie, and the Brazilian house act Almanac. The album, with its iconic GIFs-turned-cover art, showcases the scope and vision of the project in the best possible way. 2024 started out with some of the duo’s first guest appearances on Tchami’s Confession imprint and AC Slater’s Night Bass, keeping the flow of new music consistent, just the way we like it. 72 UK Festivals Cancelled or Posponed in 2024 Sparking Alarm
The UK festival scene faces a challenging 2024, with 72 festivals either cancelled, postponed, or permanently ceasing operations—twice as many as the previous year. The stark figures come from the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF), which also reported that 204 events have vanished from the British calendar since 2019. Almost half of these losses—96 events—occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Economic Struggles and a “Devastating Period” AIF CEO John Rostron described 2024 as a “devastating period” for the festival industry, citing sustained economic challenges from the pandemic, high inflation, and shifting consumer trends as key culprits. Earlier this year, the AIF raised alarms about the precarious state of the sector. By March, 21 festivals—including Standon Calling, Neighbourhood Weekender, Doune The Rabbit Hole, and Tokyo World—had already pulled the plug on their plans. Long-standing events such as Nozstock The Hidden Valley also announced that 2024 would mark their final year. By mid-year, the tally had climbed to 40, with cancellations affecting dance-centric events like El Dorado, Riverside, and NASS. More recently, Hampshire’s Cosmic Roots, Kent’s Alfresco, and others like Camp Bestival Shropshire and Highest Point have joined the growing list of casualties. The Call for Government Intervention The AIF has repeatedly called for targeted governmental support, including a reduction in VAT on ticket sales from 20% to 5%. Rostron emphasized the significant economic contribution of festivals to local communities and the UK Treasury, lamenting the lack of governmental action to preserve these cultural mainstays. We have campaigned tirelessly for targeted, temporary government intervention which, evidence shows, would have saved most of the independent events that have fallen in 2024 While the UK Government recently introduced a voluntary levy on arena concert ticket sales to support grassroots music venues, the implementation details remain unclear. The AIF argues that such measures are insufficient to address the scale of the crisis. An Industry in Flux The current state of the UK festival sector is a stark reminder of its vulnerability amidst broader economic uncertainties. As organizers, artists, and fans grapple with these changes, the hope remains that swift and effective interventions can prevent further losses in the years to come. For now, the UK festival calendar faces an uphill battle, and many are left wondering how many events will be able to weather the storm and return in 2025. From Rugby to Raves: How James Haskell's Mentorship With Mark Knight Led to "Go Deep"
It may sound far-fetched for rugged rugby players to swap scrums for turntables, but former England player-turned-DJ, James Haskell, says that's exactly what happened when he began learning the craft of DJing 11 years ago. Haskell, along with other rugby players in New Zealand, would alchemize their post-match adrenaline into energetic DJ sets, picking up new skills and that ultimately gave him the confidence to land gigs. Haskell's career as an international rugby player is now over, but his calling in the world of electronic music continues to pick up speed. He has performed across the globe from Dubai to Ibiza and continues to host his own radio show and podcast about DJing. Haskell has now joined forces with Mark Knight, the influential Toolroom Records boss and recipient of the 2024 EDMA Icon Award, for his first release on the label, "Go Deep." Blending groove with grit, the house track is primed to heat up any dancefloor, as vocals by Chicago house music legend Gene Farris carry a soulful invitation to dance the night away. EDM.com caught up with Knight and Haskell to discuss the collaborative process behind "Go Deep." EDM.com: How did you two first meet? Mark Haskell: It felt like it was meant to happen. James got involved with the Toolroom Academy early on, which I really respected because he understood the value of starting at the bottom and learning for himself instead of expecting others to do it for him. We first spoke online about a record, and I immediately thought, "We're going to be mates." I was already a fan of his as a rugby player and was keen to chat about sport. We started talking more, clicked as friends, and then he came down to the office to get involved with some projects. James Haskell: We first connected on Instagram, back in 2018, during the very first Toolroom Academy course. I did the course, posted about it, and Mark commented and messaged me, saying to get in touch if I ever fancied a training session. After that, I’d often drop into the Toolroom office to say hi to the team. One time, while working with Luke Hemmings in the office, Mark and I hit it off, and it’s been like that ever since. EDM.com: James, when did you realize you wanted to pursue DJing and what has the transition been like from international rugby player to DJ? James Haskell: I’ve been DJing for about 11 years. It all started when I was in New Zealand during my rugby career. I met the managing director of Serato, who was helping a few All Blacks players, including Dan Carter, learn to DJ. I thought it sounded fun, so I gave it a go. Adam Thomson helped me get started, and I used to mess around on a controller after games. P Money even gave me a few lessons. When I got back to the UK, I found out Simon Dunmore was a fan of mine, and both Seb Fontaine and Jaguar Skills gave me some lessons. I eventually did a course with SubBass and had my first gig at Ministry of Sound on the balcony. That’s when I fell in love with it.The transition, though, has been tough. Rugby opened some doors initially, but it’s also created challenges. People assume I’m just a "celebrity DJ," which couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve put in the work, playing tiny venues for little to no money. I’ve taken multiple courses and worked hard at producing music. I want to earn respect for my skills, not my profile. EDM.com: James, do you draw any parallels between music and sports? James Haskell: Absolutely. Everything I learned in rugby applies to music and DJing. It’s about working hard, going above and beyond, and breaking down every aspect of your craft. In rugby, we’d review matches to analyse what we did well and where we could improve. I take the same approach with DJing—watching my sets back, identifying what could be better, and constantly trying to improve. Resilience is key. You have to keep pushing, learning, and honing your skills. Mark Knight (L) and James Haskell (R).c/o Press EDM.com: Mark, tell us about your mentorship of James. Mark Knight: I don’t really see it as a mentorship in the traditional sense. I’m happy to share everything I’ve learned over the years, but it’s more about mutual respect. James has a fantastic work ethic and a real hunger to succeed, which I admire. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, and I’m open about them, sharing what I’ve done right and wrong along the way. What I love about James is his energy and authenticity. The dance music scene was built on raw passion and confidence, but over time, it’s become a bit elitist. James brings it back to that original spirit, where passion and drive are everything. If you’ve represented your country in sport at the highest level, you’ve already proven you can succeed under immense pressure. That kind of mindset translates to anything. EDM.com: How did your song “Go Deep” come to be? When did you two decide you wanted to work on a track together? Mark Knight: Like every record, it started with an idea. The first step was to have a conversation about what we wanted to achieve. We sat down, played a bunch of tracks, and landed on a clear direction. James led the production and really rolled up his sleeves. It was my concept initially, but we worked on it together. We brought Gene Farris in for the vocal, and it became a proper collaboration. James has invested a lot in learning from others, and that’s what makes him such a great collaborator. James Haskell: Out of all the people I’ve met, Mark is one of the few who genuinely wanted to help. We’re both driven by a desire for success, and we connected over that shared mindset. I’m always keen to learn, so when Mark suggested we work on something, I jumped at the chance. He guided me heavily—quite ruthlessly, in fact—which I appreciated. EDM.com: What is the collaborative process like between you two? James Haskell: The process started with Mark sharing some reference tracks. He sent me away to do my homework and build a loop. Then I sat down with our engineer, James Hurr, to develop it further. Once we had something solid, Mark joined us, and we worked on it together. Gene Farris was the perfect choice for the vocal; he’s a legend, and he nailed it on the first take. It’s been a true team effort, and I’ve learned so much from Mark throughout the process. Listen to Loco Dice's Raw Collaboration With Skrillex and Fireboy DML, "Heavy Heart"
When three masters of their respective craft align, the result is a statement-making effort. Loco Dice, Skrillex and Fireboy DML have joined forces for "Heavy Heart," a near-six-minute blitz of underground house grooves, genre-bending production and vocals delivered with magnetic precision. At its core, "Heavy Heart" remains tied to its underground roots through and through. The rhythm evolves constantly, from variations of wavy basslines to cackling one-shots and the psychedelic ping-pong of vocal chops. All the while, DML's words land with finesse, spoken like truths from a seasoned storyteller. Every shift in the beat feels organic, as if the song itself is adjusting and growing to match the energy of its performers. Percussive hits punctuate the groove while quick vocal ad-libs add a human touch that grounds the track amidst its own sense of innovation. "Heavy Heart" marks a new chapter for Dice. As the first release from an upcoming album in 2025, it's easy to see that it's a bold declaration of what’s to come from the acclaimed DJ and producer. Label Spotlight: Primitive UK
Hi! Who are you? Will: Hello, my name is Will Anderson and I’m the owner and founder of Primitive Jacob: I’m Jacob Eloquin, Co-director of Primitive alongside Will. Just the two of us at the moment but we hope to expand the team as we grow. What’s your ethos? Will: Our ethos has always been to create a multi genre brand that represents underground music. A platform for upcoming artists to express their individuality. Tell us your origin story… I started Primitive while at college studying music production and DJ technology. One of my final assignments was to either create an EP or put together a low budget event. Realising that I wasn’t actually very good at producing, I opted to put on an event. I ended up hiring the Horsham rugby club, booked some artists and hosted their first ever drum and bass event. I think we went over capacity by about 100 people- all thanks to my mum being on the door! This was the first project involving the Primitive name. I chose it because it means the character of an early stage in the evolutionary/historical development of something. I carried on hosting events and then a year later decided to turn it into a label as well. From the age of 15 I began DJing and played the majority of parties around Horsham, some of the parties were incredible, even the painfully awful ones have left jokes memories. It was during this time that I first met Jacob. Jacob: I knew Will in Horsham but as he was a few years above me, when he threw his first events I wasn’t old enough to get in as I was under 18! I had just started college but had the same ambition of pursuing music as a career, mainly in music production. I reached out to Will and bought my first pair of Numark controllers from him, he then ended up teaching me how to mix on CDJs. From around 2018 we started DJing parties together. We built a fairly solid reputation in Horsham and are notorious for playing the best events in Sussex, including a literal Project X party which attracted thousands of people and resulted in a disowned son after the parents found out the state of the house… Since then we’ve had a few years of travel, uni, then Covid and dealing with being in two separate cities which was hard. However in the last year alone, we have garnered multiple Radio 1 plays and some serious recognition from DJs around the world. Tell us about your local scene… We are based in Horsham, bang in between Brighton and London. I’d love to say we have great nightlife but the only club we had shut down a few years ago, it played cheesy pop music and it was terrible, but somehow you’d always end up there. Then when you were in, it would take you hours to leave as it had the stickiest floor known to man! Jacob: Our town doesn’t really cater for nightlife at all, there are two bars open till 2am but the music is awful. The best memories are when we did a mini festival on our mate’s farm called ‘Edgalfest’, we set up a stage, lasers and sound system and got Freddie Martin and Bushbaby to come and play which was such a fun night. We have had a fair few artists break through out of Horsham though: Sota, Degs, Hologram, Low:r and even the label Overview. Will: It is unreal to see, we hosted a charity event with all of those acts two years ago. Obviously those artists are within the drum and bass world, but there’s also a wicked rapper called JAEBO we work with closely, and also an upcoming UKG artist called Nuffsedd to keep tabs on. Do you have a specific sound or vibe? Jacob: We’ve always been a multi-genre label but started off within bass house and drum and bass as that’s mainly what I started out producing, along with all the other artists we knew. As we’ve grown up and since mid 2023 especially, we’ve moved into UKG, bass and breaks. We felt these genres coincide with each other a lot better when mixing. Will: It was hard to really nail down what we wanted to release, it was all so messy when we first started, we had no structure or any idea what we were doing. We loved all electronic music, which is great, but yeah we weren’t really getting anywhere and that meant we didn’t really fit in or have an aesthetic locked down. After a few years with personal mental health issues, I think we both looked at Primitive in a new way and realised the sounds we wanted to push. Not saying we are big and successful by any means but I personally think it’s a lot clearer now with a set branding in place. We will always release what we love first and foremost, the adaptability between genres as well is unreal, I don’t think we could ever stick to one sound. Do you have a regular artist roster- who can we see releasing with you? Will: We definitely have some artists we will always release with now. Acts like After Hours, Charlie Shell, PRESTi, Nicche and Eloquin have become an integral part of our recent successes this year. Of course we are always on the hunt for new talent but it also comes down to how well you work with the artist and their level of commitment and communication. We want the best for our acts and their releases, we know we’ve done our job when their releases are being played out, charting on Beatport and streaming well. Jacob: Having started releasing music in 2018, we’ve watched a few artists break into the scene, most notably MPH and Silk, both acts who have released with us in the past. We are hoping to continue to help elevate artists. Tell us about your A&R process… Jacob: Releasing music under Eloquin has allowed me to be involved in the scene from the ground up by attending events and networking. Whether it is through collaboration, connecting online or in person, I just speak to them and share music and then if something really stands out I would ask if they would be keen to release it on Primitive. Will: We still have a submission email as well at [email protected], we’ve honestly found some absolute gems. Jacob being an artist as well and naturally networking with other acts has really helped. We will also directly message some acts as well to see if they’d like to work on anything for us. What makes you different from other labels? Will: There are so many incredible labels out there but for us, on a more personal level, we’ve luckily known from early on that being involved in music is all we’ve wanted. I never conformed well to the education system, I failed school with basically no GCSE’s, I dropped out of college twice and then inevitably dropped out of uni. Being creative is all I wanted and I could never see myself trapped doing something I didn’t love. I think this is where Primitive stemmed from, pushing something that we have control over, it allows us to express ourselves as well as helping others. At twenty-five I was diagnosed with ADHD and it all kind of aligned for me then. It was like the biggest weight off my shoulders and I could finally breathe. Putting myself first and battling through depression allowed my creativity to then blossom. Since we’ve grown up and both faced issues, Primitive has gone from strength to strength. Jacob: What truly sets Primitive apart is that we know we aren’t the biggest label, we like being the underdog that finds unknown artists and gives them a platform to shine and often go on to achieve bigger things. At its core, it is just two mates who love music working towards their shared vision. These relationships naturally evolve beyond that release often resulting in long lasting friendships while maintaining the professionalism essential for growth. We have had our fair share of challenges, lost so much money, made many stupid mistakes. But, we’ve kept going and learned from everything. We are building a community that encompasses all from those who love listening, to those who want to learn to produce, to those who want to DJ their first event. We aim to help anyone with the ambition to achieve their goals. Will: We understand how hard this industry can be and we are still very new to it all. We are nowhere near where we want to be but this is something we love and we are very happy with the progression this label has made in the past year. We are just two lads who have a passion for music, who also want to see other people succeed and be happy. Got a bit deep there, but I think that shows the difference in who we are running this brand. We understand the type of issues that can occur from pursuing this type of career. What does it take to run a bass music label in 2024? Will: Everything changes so fast that you have to be adaptable and get humbled every now and again, we are still figuring that out. If you’re starting anything out, whether you’re a label, promoter or artist etc, be prepared to fail over and over. I actually started Primitive in 2016 but it never really got rolling until last year. I do however feel bass music has been the best it’s ever been, despite the general struggle with nightlife and venues sadly shutting down, the output of music has been incredible. Jacob: It’s definitely hard to run a small independent label when the input of funds has come solely from us. It takes a lot of grit, determination and passion to weather the music industry, especially when relying on algorithms to be able to reach new audiences which sometimes feels like nothing is working. You need to be consistent and try different techniques to find what works for you. It’s not easy, but fundamentally I believe that the music speaks volumes and if that is solid then the rest will fall into place. What have you got coming up we should look out for? Will: Consistent releases and more events next year, limited run of dubpacks and merch, we will see where that takes us. Jacob: We are working on a huge charity USB project with tons of perks for members who are in our community. I would also love to start a podcast talking about mental health in the industry as well as I don’t think that is touched on enough. Support Primitive Audio: Insta/Soundcloud/Website

Lauren Mia Announces Launch of New Record Label, Halcyon
Lauren Mia is forging a bold new path in her creative ventures with the launch of her own record label, Halcyon Records. The Los Angeles native and rising force in melodic techno has slated the launch of the imprint for early 2025. Mia’s career has been defined by her ability to blend timeless techno influences with a forward-thinking creative ethos, and her latest endeavor is no exception. The launch of Halcyon promises to be a home for music that channels the raw spirit of 90's rave culture through a modern lens. The label's Berlin-inspired aesthetic stems from a transformative period in Mia's journey. Earlier this year, she says, she immersed herself in the city’s storied club scene, where minimalist beats and analog textures sparked a deeper appreciation for dance music’s raw, unfiltered origins. Halcyon will be her platform to explore these influences on her own terms, presenting a carefully curated roster of music that resonates with the spirit of underground culture. "I found it fascinating to hear these old-school trends resurfacing in the clubs and resonating with younger generations, which motivated me to infuse my own perspective into this revival," Mia explains. "As a female electronic music producer and DJ, I aim to celebrate and reimagine the timeless spirit of that vibrant musical landscape with Halcyon." The venture is named after her new single "Halcyon," which marks her debut release on Armin van Buuren's venerated Armada label. 1788-L Cements Himself as an Architect of Chaos With EP, "NU-TYPE vol. 1"
1788-L's ominous new project feels less like an EP and more like an urgent transmission from the ambitious fringes of sound design. With NU-TYPE vol. 1, the producer has inked his first release on Rezz's HypnoVizion label. And it doesn't just simply just push the envelope—it obliterates it with a barrage of seismic basslines and genre-defying song structures. The project's opening salvo, “Wartype” (with Quackson), sets the tone with thunderous, cinematic impacts that evolve into a frenzy of growling horns. Like a war machine powering to life, the track explodes into spitfiring hi-hats and a grinding bassline that feels as relentless as a storm. On "Wasp.exe," a cascade of slippery synths dances over a gritty trap beat before the track takes a jaw-dropping pivot into drum & bass. Marked by an ankle-breaking beat switch, the track feels like a controlled free-fall paired with the precision programming of a finely tuned machine. On "Nanoblade," incendiary bass growls and sharp synth stabs dominate 1788-L's soundscapes in an exploration of drum & bass bearing the kind of unrelenting energy that feels tailor-made for the dancefloor. The track’s intensity peaks in moments where snarling basslines collide with rapid drum programming, each sound element locked in a tense struggle. The EP's closing track "Prismtech" is an offering that feels like a dark, mechanical ballet. Its industrial textures swirl through the mix, pushing 1788-L’s creative limits in a finale that encapsulates the EP’s theme: uncompromising innovation. Carly Wilford Drops Smoldering House Track, "Loveline"
Carly Wilford is back with a new single, "Loveline," a house stunner with lyricism that blurs the line between desire and delusion. Her latest track transforms personal torment into a hypnotic, rhythmic exploration of connection—beautiful yet utterly consuming. She manages to weave a powerful storyline through its palpitating four-on-the-floor beat, capturing the visceral ache of a love that exists only in shadowy mental spaces—part memory, part hallucination. Wilford's propulsive production drives the arrangement with urgency as its lyrics notch up the tension, drifting between yearning and surrender with a compelling fragility. Slicing through dark, churning basslines, the vocals unearth a vulnerability that's almost unsettlingly intimate. The repeated refrain about being "out of my mind" suggests an infatuation that's simultaneously an escape and a form of temporary madness—a vicious internal power struggle we've all experienced when chasing love. "Loveline" is out now via Armin van Buuren's venerable Armada Music imprint. Check out the new single below. [Maverick Helicopters Review] Flying in Style Above Dreamstate SoCal
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to experience Maverick Helicopters’ Sky Trip experience which took me into the sky to enjoy the cityscape views of Long Beach and an aerial view of Dreamstate SoCal Festival. Since I opted for the trip which embarked from the festival, I met with very friendly staff members at the Maverick Helicopter booth inside the festival who checked me in. After a short wait, another crew member golf carted me back to the main office where I was handed a safety flier. After reading it, it was time to walk out to the helicopter where I was given an opportunity to do a quick photo op. As I entered the Maverick EcoStar (EC-130) which is built from the ground up for sightseeing, I was excited for the experience to unfold. As I sat inside, I noticed that the EcoStar is equipped with front-facing stadium-style seating. This, combined with full wraparound windows, guarantees that every seat is the best in the house. The pilot briefly gave out further instructions and it was finally time for takeoff. As the helicopter ascended, the city lights of Long Beach twinkled below, giving way to the expansive darkness of the night sky. The anticipation grew as the Queen Mary came into view, its majestic silhouette illuminated by the festival’s vibrant lights. The pilot would make a couple circles around so that everyone could take in the views and take as many pictures and videos as they wanted. Something I appreciated about the tour was that the pilot offered brief history explanations of everything that we were seeing. View of the Festival The bird’s-eye view of the Dreamstate grounds was nothing short of breathtaking. The sprawling stages, pulsating with music and energy, were a mesmerizing sight. The thousands of attendees, a sea of glowing lights, created a breathtaking spectacle. The helicopter circled the venue, offering a panoramic view of the festivities. The flight itself was smooth and comfortable, thanks to the skilled pilot and luxurious helicopter. Overall, the Maverick Helicopter ride to Dreamstate SoCal was an unforgettable experience. It elevated the festival experience to new heights, offering a unique perspective and a VIP entrance. It’s an absolute must for any Dreamstate attendee seeking a truly extraordinary adventure. For anyone that may be interested in riding the helicopter next year, they can visit their official website here. Maverick Helicopters also offer their services at other festivals such as Daytrip in Long Beach and EDC in Las Vegas. Their services can also be sought out for Maui, the Grand Canyon, and California offering tours. Giorgia Angiuli x Juliet Fox – Eye Contact
In her new EP ‘Eye Contact’, Italian producer, multi-instrumentalist and live music innovator Giorgia Angiuli explores themes of spirituality, creativity, and meditation. The EP spans across five tracks ranging from techno to psytrance. At its heart is the title track—a long-awaited collaboration with UK-based producer Juliet Fox—from which the EP draws its name. United by a shared vision of fostering unity and freedom through a blend of their unique styles, the pair crafted ‘Eye Contact’. The intent is to guide listeners on an immersive journey through rhythm, sound, and transcendence. Angiuli adopted a fluid, hybrid approach to the EP’s production unlike any of her previous projects. It allows the music to move organically and resonate both physically and emotionally. Across ‘Break The Dawn’, ‘Nothing is Far’, ‘Nietzsche’, ‘A Good Addiction’, and now ‘Eye Contact’, each track builds on swift arpeggios, hypnotic synth stutters, and suspenseful vocals. This creates an entrancing and deeply meditative listening experience. A strong advocate for women’s empowerment, Angiuli also launched a remix contest exclusively open to female artists in partnership with Change the Beat. It is a non-profit organization that supports underrepresented voices in electronic music. Listen to ‘Eye Contact’ EP here.
