  1. The Canadian DJ’s ‘Bye Bye Plastic Foundation’ has announced a significant partnership with London clubs Gallery and B Club which launches on 19th June. BLOND:ISH’s charity, Bye Bye Plastic, has hooked up with West London’s trailblazing GALLERY and B Club for a bold and pioneering partnership. The Foundation aims to reduce single-use plastic in the music industry with a host of club, events & artists-first programs. The Canadian artist will play Gallery, the new West London club on Thursday June 19 to launch the collaboration at Gallery and its sister venue B Club. Going forward, both clubs will donate £1 from every glass bottle of water sold, to the foundation. “Creating a greener future through the music industry and nightlife is really important to us at Gallery and B Club,” says Barth Rougier, founder of West London’s Gallery and B Club. “We’ve already eliminated single-use plastic from our drinks service so partnering with BLOND:ISH and Bye Bye Plastic to work on future initiatives and help spread the word of the foundation’s work is an exciting prospect for us. There’s more projects in conjunction with the foundation which we’re excited to announce soon.” BLOND:ISH has been leading the charge when it comes to setting a new environmental standard in the dance music world. Bye Bye Plastic is a disruptive foundation working to remove single-use plastics in the music industry by initiating conversation, facilitating solutions and building a growing community around the movement. “It is genuinely rewarding to gather the support of dedicated players like Gallery & B Club. It shows we can get loving & caring fuel from right within the industry, and create a virtuous impact circle for People, Planet & Party. Now it’s time to widen the circle!” Camille Guitteau, co-founder of Bye Bye Plastic The Zero Plastic Club initiative has run in France for the past two years. Twenty four nightclubs made a collective promise to eliminate plastic water bottles from their dancefloors, meaning the program achieved the prevention of over 10 tonnes of plastic from entering the scene annually. Bye Bye Plastic is now working with the NTIA UK to secure funding for a UK initiative. The foundation also has an ‘Eco-Rider’ initiative which more than 1500 artists have signed up for. This promotes a greener approach to touring and is currently being used by artists including Pete Tong, Idris Elba, Ben Klock and Ida Engberg. BLOND:ISH was recently announced as the first ever female resident at Pacha Ibiza where she will head up her ABRACADABRA party throughout summer. She will bring those same euphoric, emotionally resonant and high-vibrational sounds to Gallery this June. Gallery and B Club are both already single use plastic-free. The West London venue; Gallery, opened at the end of March and has already become a vital new space for serious music lovers with its state-of the art sound system, raw underground aesthetic and a 360-degree DJ booth. The 400 capacity venue has a unique edge that cannot be found anywhere in this part of the capital and has so far welcomed the likes of Miguelle & Tons, William Djoko, and Jaden Thompson with Prospa, Seth Troxler, Rossi, Pete Tong, Nic Fanciulli and more planned throughout May. With this renewed commitment to environmentalism and forward thinking partnership with BLOND:ISH and Bye Bye Plastic, Gallery once again cements its status as London’s most essential new venue. Their collaboration brought a reimagined performance of Cerrone’s classic track “Supernature” to life in front of the iconic Arc de Triomphe. 5. Making music for free has never been easier. All you need is a computer – or even just your phone – to start cutting tracks using nothing but freeware. Here, we compile our roundups of the best freeware music-making software, apps, instruments and plug-ins that every producer, musician, beatmaker and DJ needs. READ MORE: The best sample packs, updated every month Your first step should be to bookmark our regularly updated list of the best freeware of the month. There, you’ll find a selection of tools, instruments, plug-ins, loops and samples which won’t cost you a cent. What are the best free DAWs? A digital audio workstation – or DAW – is your primary software for making music. It’s the hub where you record and arrange tracks, add effects, mix, and even master your music. Most professional studios and producers use software whose names you might be familiar with: Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, for instance. Some of these have ‘Lite’ or ‘Intro’ versions that give you a taste of the DAW with limited features — these are superb for familiarising yourself with music production, but you can find fully-fledged DAWs, free of charge, elsewhere. Thankfully, there are many free DAWs to choose from. Check out our full list of the best freeware DAWs, including those you can score a free trial of, to see which works for the music you want to make. Here’s a preview: Tracktion Waveform Free Apple GarageBand Pro Tools First Studio One Prime Cakewalk Sonar Cakewalk Next What are the best free music-making phone apps? There are plenty. From standalone synths to drum machines to robust DAWs, you can find all manner of music-making and production apps for your iPhone or Android device. Here’s our list of the top freeware music apps to get started. Where can I get the best free samples? We’ve compiled a list of the best websites that offer free samples this year. For a library that we can stand behind, MusicTech has partnered BandLab Sounds to offer over a dozen royalty-free sample packs at no cost. These range from synths to FX to beats, and the samples come as uncompressed WAVs and are downloadable via web or mobile. I don’t own a guitar, synth or drums. Is there free software or virtual instruments? Of course. While actually playing those instruments with your computer mouse and keyboard can be finicky, it’s a viable and popular alternative to spending thousands on a full recording setup. There are hundreds of freeware virtual instruments out there – here’s what we consider the best: Best freeware software synthesizers Best free orchestral plug-ins Best freeware drum machines Best freeware rock instruments And, while not technically instruments themselves, there are scores of free plug-ins that augment and enhance your existing instruments: Best freeware plug-ins for guitarists Best free software tools for live performance Best free software tools for DJs What are the best free effect and utility plug-ins? Not all plug-ins make beautiful noise. You’ll need utility tools to EQ and mix your tracks, while effects can come in the form of reverb, delay, distortion and so on. 6. As I walked the floors of a pop-up music venue within the LA Convention Center, pristine images of magenta-hued nebulas were projected on all four walls and the ceiling. The legendary recording artist, Moby, and his six-piece band were performing atmospheric electronic music on a stage in the center of the space. And the sound was being emitted evenly from every angle by L-Acoustics’ state-of-the-art L-Series speakers. READ MORE: In 3 hours, Hans Zimmer Live reminds you why AI won’t replace real musicians The word “immersive” gets thrown around a lot these days. However, after attending live music events constantly for the past 18 years, Cercle Odyssey was my first live music experience that actually fit that description. This masterful and legitimate execution was to be expected from Cercle. Over the past decade, the innovative event brand has brought artists to perform among the most iconic and historic places in the world. From a modular synthesizer show in front of the Pyramids of Giza, to an elegant piano concert under the Northern Lights in Finland, and a bangin’ tech house track in the middle of Plaza de España in Sevilla, Spain. Cercle Odyssey is the touring version of this concept. By building temporary spaces in different cities (so far, Mexico City, Los Angeles, and Paris), Cercle can now invite 5,000 people to be enveloped by beautiful visuals and music. To best mirror the epic locations of their traditional events, Cercle called upon esteemed director Neels Castillon to capture footage throughout the globe to project at the show. But Cercle’s founder, Derek Barbolla, is clear that the visuals are there to support the sound, and has used L-Acoustics systems since the beginning of Cercle. “[Cercle Odyssey] is a combination of visuals, lights, and sound, but the most important thing is the sound,” Barbolla told a select few journalists before giving us a tour of the venue. For Cercle to succeed as a touring concept, the visuals had to go from 3D to 2D. But the expansive nature of its events lives on in the sound presentation. A traditional Cercle event uses standard stereo, but Cercle Odyssey expands to 360 audio. “How do you recreate an experience of something that’s as beautiful as doing a set in front of the Pyramids in Egypt?” When L-Acoustics’ CEO, Laurent Vassié, poses the question, he remarks on the visuals being projected on all the walls and the ceiling. He also mentions that Cercle is filling the room with curated scents to capture as many senses as possible. But the true 360 aspect of Cercle Odyssey is the audio. L-Acoustics was fully equipped to create a 360 audio landscape because of its prominent L-ISA (L-Acoustics Immersive Sound Art) system. It’s been used in many different environments, including Janet Jackson’s residency at Resorts World in Las Vegas and Max Cooper’s Immersive Audio Spatial Performance at Polygon Live Festival in London. “The goal is to bring the idea of spatial audio, or immersive audio, or hyper-real audio to the live event at all scales,” says Scott Sugden, director of product management, solutions, at L-Acoustics. Moby performed with a band, so Cercle’s engineer took full advantage of the agency provided to him through the spatial mixing software. More than once during the evening, different sonic elements would take sharp turns throughout the system. These moves drew my focus to different areas of the venue, which, due to its completely immersive nature, revealed imagery that I may have missed otherwise. When it comes to the specific design of the L-ISA system at Cercle Odyssey, it is technically 16.1. All 16 channels are line arrays, the universally adopted speaker configuration that L-Acoustics invented in 1992. In total, 72 speakers are outputting 500,000 watts. There are 12 channels of immersive surround hanging around the perimeter, four main line arrays above the stage facing into the crowd, and a subwoofer unit suspended in the center point above the stage. To prepare for this unique configuration, Moby’s team visited L-Acoustics’ studio in Los Angeles, where they have the facilities to virtually model exactly how the space will sound in advance. The sessions were vital to the success of the show because, in truth, immersive systems present choices that have never existed in live sound. Seasoned artists like Moby and his team have to completely reimagine what they’ve been doing for decades. “You see artists’ eyes light up when they see this for the first time — ‘Holy cow, I never thought I could do this,’” Sugden says. “There’s been a lot of evolutions of technology in the last 30 years. Most of them, the audience would never be aware of. Digital networks of audio. It makes it easier for us working at the show. I don’t think the audience knows the difference,” Sugden says. “I know the audience experienced a difference when the line array came out because it sounded better. Immersive audio, what L-ISA is doing, absolutely, the audience goes, ‘Something is different. Something is better.’” I certainly knew something was better during Moby’s performance. No matter where I stood within the temporary venue, the audio was clear and even. While in reality, there is no sound in space — if the cosmos did produce natural music like deserts and jungles (two other environments projected during Moby’s set), it wouldn’t come from a singular point. It would surround me just as it did at Cercle Odyssey. The post Moby at Cercle Odyssey: The closest I ever came to floating through space appeared first on MusicTech. View the full article
  7. ICON Collective, a pillar of electronic music production education based in Los Angeles, has officially shut down. The school announced its permanent closure on May 29th, citing financial difficulties as the reason behind the abrupt move. ICON had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on August 6th, 2024 in an effort to restructure and preserve operations before ultimately deciding to close. "It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that we share the news that ICON Collective will be permanently closed as of May 29," wrote co-founder David Alexander Valencia in a statement posted to the school's website. "ICON has faced financial circumstances that require a prompt closure to protect the refunds and tuition payments potentially due to students." Although the school's website remains active, its official Instagram account has gone offline. A notice on the door of its Downtown Burbank campus now directs students to an online portal for information on academic records, tuition recovery and guidance. The stakes are especially high for international students, who have just 15 days to either transfer to a new school or leave the country. Founded in 2005 by Christopher Wright and David Alexander Valencia, ICON was developed to offer a more artist-centric approach to music education. The school in 2017 earned accreditation before opening a facility in 2020, serving students both in-person and online. Known for its hands-on learning environment and community-oriented culture, the school became a trusted destination for aspiring DJs and electronic music producers. Over the years, ICON helped launch the careers of many high-profile electronic artists, including NGHTMRE, SLANDER, Kayzo, Sullivan King, Kompany, Pauline Herr and the late i_o, among others. Several have taken to social media to bemoan the school's shutdown. "Icon Collective changed EVERYTHING for us.. today is a very sad day for the music community in losing such a priceless resource," SLANDER wrote on X. "We want to thank everyone at the Collective for all the blood, sweat, and tears they put into MAKING DREAMS HAPPEN." "RIP Icon Collective," Kompany wrote. "That school changed the course of my life and career. Forever grateful." Former student James Choi, who performs and produces music under the alias SKYFVLL, says the school was instrumental in shaping his career. "I was lost in my artist project before ICON," Choi tells EDM.com. "But after attending, I finally felt a sense of direction that no YouTube tutorial or Reddit thread would’ve shown. I’m still really close with my classmates, whether it’s working on collabs or going on songwriting trips, and I’m really grateful for the community that ICON gave me. It’s at ICON where I truly learned what it meant to be an artist and to be unique as one. Hands down the best decision I made in my life." More information can be found on the ICON Collective website.

  9. Pendulum are officially back in album mode. The iconic electronic-rock outfit announced this week that their long-awaited fourth album, INERTIA, will drop on August 22nd, marking their first full-length release in 15 years. They also revealed the album's tracklist. The news is accompanied by the release of "Save The Cat," the album's blistering lead single. In classic Pendulum fashion, the track delivers a high-octane fusion of drum & bass, metal and emotionally charged vocals from frontman Rob Swire, whose scream-laced performance is backed by thunderous drums and cinematic synths. Swire said the the track was written "during a period of self-questioning and frustration" following two breakups. "It’s the sound of Pendulum finding themselves again, and me figuring myself out to a certain extent," he said in a press release. "Breakups do that—they strip things down and show you who you are. I’m just trying not to become the guy who needs to go through one just to make a record." A feline-themed jolt of nostalgia and aggression, "Save The Cat" previews what INERTIA promises to be: a return to Pendulum's roots with a modern, sharpened edge. The album, their first since 2010's Immersion, will feature a number of high-profile collaborations, including tracks with Bullet For My Valentine, AWOLNATION, Hybrid Minds and Joey Valance & Brae. Revered for their explosive live shows and groundbreaking fusion of drum & bass and rock, Pendulum are once again proving that few acts can match their intensity and influence across electronic music's evolving landscape. "I was basically testing how far we could push Pendulum," Swire added. "Seeing what we could get away with. I always looked at The Prodigy as the benchmark. They started out as pure rave—breakbeat, hardcore—but they evolved. They became their own sound." Due out August 22nd via Mushroom Music, INERTIA will feature 16 tracks. 11. GRiZ and Wooli have joined forces for the first time to release a new collaboration, "Chaos Theory." The bone-rattling dubstep track blends GRiZ’s signature funk-fueled energy with Wooli's heavy-hitting bass, delivering a cinematic and explosive collaboration fans had been clamoring for. "Chaos Theory" features a custom voiceover from voice actor Boris Hiestand, known for his work in Assassin’s Creed and as the voice of Sigma in Overwatch, adding a dramatic flair that amplifies the track's intensity. GRiZ and Wooli waste no time, opening with an electrifying guitar riff that quickly gives way to the former's signature saxophone riffs, setting the stage as Hiestand declares, "Let’s begin." From there, the track unfolds like part movie trailer, part video game cutscene. GRiZ and Wooli detonate the first drop, a wobbly burst of energy that doubles as a bass-fueled thrill ride. As the arrangement progresses, GRiZ reins in the chaos with funkadelic flourishes that tie the experience together before it all culminates with Hiestand’s final line and a defiant laugh, sealing the dramatic arc that is "Chaos Theory." The release builds on GRiZ’s surprise GEMiNI EP and the reveal of his new music festival, Seven Stars, effectively crystallizing his return to the electronic music scene after a two-year hiatus. For Wooli, the track adds to a string of high-profile collaborations and upcoming performances at major festivals, including sets at Shambhala, Bass Canyon, Elements and Seven Stars. 12. The tastemakers behind Solid Grooves' rise from underground hero to house music royalty are back to celebrate a landmark moment for the UK imprint: 100 releases. Marking the milestone are Solid Grooves' co-founders, Michael Bibi and PAWSA, alongside a slew of promising producers delivering 10 new DJ weapons that capture both the spirit of the label's beginnings and the momentum driving it forward. Few record labels have left a mark on global dancefloors quite like Solid Grooves, a scene-shaping force that has continuously carved out the future of tech house music since its inception in 2015. A decade later, the imprint says it's "celebrating 100 releases with the artists who shaped it." The most anticipated songs from the new Summer Sampler 2025 collection are Bibi's "Lil Freaky" and PAWSA's "Rendezvous," each of which showcases the minimalistic and undeniably magnetic energy of Solid Grooves. Other standouts include Dennis Cruz's "Monochrome" and Ben Sterling's "Don Lee," where infectious grooves ooze from deep basslines while punchy percussion drives home the label's signature sound. In other Solid Grooves news, it's now poised for a sold-out Los Angeles show on October 12th featuring a massive b3b set from Bibi, PAWSA and Cruz. The label is also taking over Ibiza's storied DC-10 club throughout the summer for "Solid Grooves Casino" every Thursday from June through October. 13. There's something deeply satisfying about rediscovering something you'd completely forgotten you owned, like finding a $20 bill in last winter's coat pocket or realizing that embarrassing MySpace post from 2006 actually contained some decent poetry. For Above & Beyond's Paavo Siljamäki, that moment came when bandmate Tony McGuinness breathed new life into a forgotten instrumental demo that had been gathering digital dust for nearly a decade. "Start A Fire," the latest single from Above & Beyond's upcoming album Bigger Than All Of Us, began as what Siljamäki calls a "deep instrumental cut" from his personal archives. McGuinness says he had an epiphany one day that the music would be perfect for a forgotten lyric he'd written in a notebook some years ago: "There's enough of you in me to start a fire." The song finally clicked during a trip to the scenic Gorge Amphitheatre, where its verses came together and formed what "ended up being one of our favorites," McGuinness said. The iconic dance music trio then reunited with the ever-reliable Richard Bedford, the voice behind a number of their most prized tracks, like "Sun & Moon" and "Thing Called Love." Bedford's vocals are equal parts ache and ecstasy, delivering McGuinness' lyrical anchor with the kind of romantic sincerity you'd expect from such a timeless collaborative pact. And with Above & Beyond's heady house production at the bedrock, the track is energetic but just sentimental enough to stare out of a rideshare window like you're in a breakup montage. You can listen to "Start a Fire" below and find the new single on streaming platforms here. Above & Beyond's first album in seven years, Bigger Than All Of Us, is scheduled to release July 18th via their own Anjunabeats label. 14. Oliver Heldens and Julia Church have released a new single, "Ruins," out now via the iconic Ministry of Sound. The new collaboration starts right away with Church’s haunting vocal front and center. Immediately setting a reflective tone, her voice comes in featherlike, almost bare, buoyed by soft chords underneath. The renowned singer-songwriter holds the arrangement together, bringing her signature emotional purity. There's a tortured vulnerability in her lyrics, but she delivers them with control and clarity. Meanwhile, Heldens builds the beat in gently. His percussion is tight and minimal, supported by a steady drum groove that never overpowers the mix. The synths are warm but restrained, giving the track a sense of movement without cluttering the space. All said and done, "Ruins" plays to both artists’ strengths to deliver a melodic house stunner that feels personal, polished and poignant. 15. Three artists, one legendary studio and a simple premise about desire have produced "Crazy For It," a new single from Keinemusik and Boys Noize. Recorded partially at Rick Rubin's iconic Shangri-La studio in Malibu, the collaboration channels the same transformative energy that has blessed countless albums within those walls. "Crazy For It" officially hit streaming platforms today over a year after Keinemusik debuted it in their set at the fabled Egyptian Pyramids of Giza, a performance that was ultimately named by EDM.com as one of 2024's best. Vinson, who provides the track's soul-stirring vocals, then joined the group at Coachella in April 2025 to perform it live for the first time. With its lush, minimalist production and percussive flourishes, "Crazy For It" leans heavily into Keinemusik's signature territory. Considering the industrial techno of Boys Noize, it's a fascinating crossover. He contributes his technical wizardry in measured doses, proving that electronic music's most compelling moments emerge when disparate worlds collide. Meanwhile, Vinson's vocal refrain ("If you want it, you gotta go crazy for it") moonlights as hypnosis. It's the kind of hook that works as both a club anthem and deeper meditation on what we're willing to sacrifice for our obsessions. You can listen to "Crazy For It" below. 16. Anyma collapses the boundary between consciousness and code in his third album, The End Of Genesys, channeling transhumanist motifs and cinematic intensity through an ambitious collection of 15 tracks. A dark horse in this year's Grammy conversation, The End Of Genesys distills years of thematic exploration into one cohesive body of work rooted in identity, transformation and the ever-fragile line between humans and machines. The album completes a trilogy from the Italian techno superstar, whose recent Vegas Sphere residency established him as the record-breaking venue's first-ever electronic headliner. c/o Anyma "Lucente" opens the album in a haze of ambient textures before "Voices In My Head" picks up the pace, its eerie looping vocal drawing us further into a hypnotic beat co-produced with Argy and Son of Son. "Hypnotized" offers a clearer break in tone as Ellie Goulding's familiar voice leads a precise, restrained arrangement that favors space over spectacle. The flow of The End Of Genesys is deliberate, though rarely predictable. Anyma teams up with Grimes for "Taratata," a chaotic and shape-shifting track full of fractured textures and rhythmic snaps that keep the ground moving. Then there's "Neverland (From Japan)," a fan-favorite from the DJ's blockbuster Sphere concerts that delivers a particularly high-energy, edgy moment in the album. On the tension-fueled "Fortuna," Sevdaliza’s vocals slip between tight percussion and sublime synths before "Atmosphere" follows with rolling energy that never relents. "Work," a collaboration with hip-hop breakout Yeat, then breaks the pattern completely with gritty, industrial production in one of the album's most striking shifts. The album's titular track, "The End Of Genesys," serves as its centerpiece, threading key themes through layered synths and a visceral rhythm. "Entropy" is another highlight, bringing together Anyma, REZZ and fknsyd for a pressurized moment. The latter's languid vocals float with a ghostly cadence while REZZ adds her signature distortion. Another surefire standout is "Human Now," the most emotionally charged track on the album. Stentorian vocals from Empire of the Sun's Luke Steele introduce a warm clarity the record hadn't breached until now, adding a sense of melodic grandeur that moonlights as the apex of Anyma's merging of humanity and technology. Framed as both a conclusion and a turning point, The End Of Genesys brings that narrative full circle while delivering Anyma's most impactful work to date. 17. Photo Credit: Hybe Corp. K-pop powerhouse Hybe has set up a Chinese subsidiary to support its artists’ expansion into the market. Hybe China Co., Ltd. was launched April 2 in Beijing—Hybe’s fourth overseas branch following those in Japan, the US, and Latin America. Its new Beijing-based entity will focus on backing artists’ activities in China, notably to compete with its rival agencies, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment. According to industry insiders, Hybe’s latest move may reflect growing expectations that China will loosen its tacit ban on South Korean entertainment, which has been in place for several years. But in spite of the market’s potential, Hybe China is not expected to immediately launch a talent audition program or debut a K-pop group. Instead, the unit is likely to play a more limited role—at least initially. Better relations between China and South Korea could result in a major uplift in concert tickets, albums, and merch sales for South Korean companies as they ride the continued buoy in K-pop’s popularity in a significant new market. It’s no coincidence that Hybe’s move to set up a new office in China comes as its flagship act, BTS, is set to reunite after its members’ military service. Pledis China, previously launched by Pledis Entertainment in 2018 prior to its acquisition by Hybe, will continue to oversee its group activities in China—namely Seventeen, which Pledis debuted in 2015. Confirmation of Hybe’s expansion into China closely follows news from South Korean outlet Yonhap that the K-pop company is also planning to establish an office in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Hybe is also in the process of selling its entire 9.38% stake in rival firm SM Entertainment to Tencent Music Entertainment, China’s biggest owner of music streaming services. The transaction was worth nearly $180 million. As Tencent cozies up to SM, the two companies also announced a new partnership that will see them co-produce a new idol group and plan performances in China. View the full article
  18. Photo Credit: Fenway Park Two concerts at Fenway Park have been abruptly canceled. Fans eager to see Shakira tonight (May 29) and Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn (May 30) will now receive refunds. The Boston ballpark made the announcement on their Instagram. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Shakira and Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn performances originally scheduled for May 29 and May 30 respectively at Fenway Park have been canceled,” the announcement reads. “Refunds will be available at your point of purchase. We apologize for the inconvenience.” Shakira was slated to play tonight, while Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn were supposed to take the stage on Friday night. Both shows were canceled, with Live Nation revealing more details about why. According to them, structural elements supporting the stage were deemed potentially unsafe during a routine pre-concert check. No one was injured, but both concerts are being canceled out of an abundance of caution. Live Nation did not immediately identify who performed the pre-concert check. Several major concerts are scheduled at Fenway Park for the summer 2025 season as part of the Nucar Fenway Concert Series. Barring these last two May performances, several upcoming performances for the Boston ballpark include: June 23 & 24 | Hozier: Unreal Unearth Tour July 17 & 18 | The Lumineers: The Automatic World Tour July 19 | Thomas Rhett: Better In Boots Tour August 23 | Jonas Brothers: Jon20 The Dream Tour August 25 | Chris Brown: Breezy XX Tour August 26 | The Who September 7 | My Chemical Romance So far, just the May dates for Shakira, Jason Aldean, and Brooks & Dunn have been canceled. Presumably the park will address stage issues found during these pre-concert checks and the rest of the summer series will go off without a hitch. They’ve got nearly a month before Hozier is set to take the stage in June. The city of Boston has not responded to press requests for comment about the concert cancellations at Fenway Park. 19. Rodney Jerkins, who’s sold an interest in his work to HarbourView. Photo Credit: HarbourView Let the IP acquisitions continue: HarbourView Equity Partners has officially purchased “select catalog assets” from veteran producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. HarbourView disclosed the deal today – albeit without getting too specific about the precise song rights at hand or the transaction’s price tag. However, the Newark-headquartered firm in its formal release did emphasize that the play “was facilitated by” Sweden’s Chapter Two, which rebranded from Anotherblock late last year. The still-live website homepage of Anotherblock not-so-subtly touts the producer credits under 47-year-old Jerkins’ belt. Just in passing, that includes contributions to releases from Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, SZA, and several others. Furthermore, in operating as Chapter Two, the business has pivoted from NFT music investments to developing catalog-acquisition tech, the appropriate site shows. In a February 2025 announcement that largely flew under the radar, Chapter Two said it’d sold songwriter interests in tracks from Lil Nas X and BTS for a total of over $6 million. The “proprietary Royalty Engine normalizes and enriches financial data and forecasts future earnings through predictive royalty modeling, making catalog transactions quicker and more reliable for all parties,” Chapter Two summed up of its offering. Evidently, the Engine is gaining at least some traction. Especially because HarbourView is hardly a stranger to catalog deals, it’ll be worth tracking Chapter Two’s presence in the volume-heavy space moving forward. DMN reached out to HarbourView for additional insight here – including, in light of its dealmaking frequency, whether it has a stake in Chapter Two itself – but didn’t immediately receive a response. In a statement, though, HarbourView head Sherrese Clarke applauded the career accomplishments of Jerkins; the “legendary” creator, for his part, had positive things to say about working with HarbourView and Chapter Two. “HarbourView truly understands the value of music and the people who create it,” he weighed in. “Music creators deserve respect and clarity when it comes to selling their life’s work, and working with both HarbourView and Chapter Two has made that process feel seamless.” And in remarks of his own, Chapter Two CEO Michel Traore described the perceived significance of the IP sale for the broader music sector. “This transaction is a clear sign that creators are realizing the true value of their work faster and more transparently than ever before,” added Traore. “Rodney is setting a new benchmark in the industry, and we thank HarbourView for their vision in working with us.” View the full article

  21. Los Angeles’ prestigious ICON Collective music production school has announced its permanent closure. The local and online music education program revealed in a message sent to students today that ICON Collective is permanently closed, effective May 29. The school cited “financial circumstances that require a prompt closure to protect the refunds and tuition payments potentially due to students” as the reason for its abrupt end. The company filed for bankruptcy in August 2024, according to Los Angeles court records. “This decision has not come easily,” ICON’s statement reads, in part. “Like so many of you, we’ve invested our hearts, our passion, and our purpose into building a creative space where artists could grow and thrive. We are truly sorry for the disruption this causes to your educational journey.” According to an FAQ section shared alongside the message, ICON has ceased all operations, including instruction, mentorship, and self-study courses, taught both in-person and online. Students will have access to online course materials for one week to download any content they wish to keep before the platform is discontinued entirely. ICON confirmed that the school will provide students with transcripts that reflect the coursework they’ve completed thus far. Although transfer credit acceptance is determined by receiving institutions, the school has established an agreement with the California College of Music in Pasadena, which will accept comparable credits from students in ICON’s music production program. The school’s statement added that students can reach out to [email protected] with general questions, but underscored that “no long-term communication or ongoing support is guaranteed.” Founded in Los Angeles by Christopher Wight & David Alexander in 2003, ICON Collective expanded its education offerings online in 2014 and became a nationally accredited music school in 2017. As recently as 2020, the school launched new programs for vocal artists and music business, and moved to a new 32,000-square-foot campus in downtown Burbank. Its notable alumni include colossal EDM names like NGHTMRE, SLANDER, Jauz, Kayzo, Sullivan King, and more. 22. UK garage sensation Sammy Virji is back with quite possibly the biggest crossover tune of his career thus far, linking up with British music titan and grime MC Skepta on their new single, “Cops & Robbers.” Out now via Astralwerks, the release marks an awaited union between two of British music’s leading luminaries, each hailing from different scenes—Virji, widely regarded as the driving force behind UKG’s recent global resurgence, and Skepta, a platinum-selling, Mercury Prize-winning rap legend. Sonically, too, “Cops & Robbers” feels like a nod of respect and admiration shared between greats. Fusing garage and grime, Virji’s bounding 808s and swinging drums are cut with Skepta’s unrivaled flow in a cosign of epic proportions. The anticipated collaboration follows Virji’s April release, “Nostalgia,” featuring Issey Cross, as the latest in a long line of massive tunes from the London producer-DJ, joining recent hits like “Damager,” with fellow genre phenom Interplanetary Criminal, and “Summertime Blues,” with Chris Lake, and breakout anthems like “If U Need It” and “Shella Verse” in his influential catalog. “Cops & Robbers” also sees Skepta delve further into the dance music universe, following the launch of Más Tiempo, his house music label and live act with Jammer. 23. UK garage breakout Sammy Virji has found his perfect partner-in-crime with Skepta, joining forces with the grime icon for a new collaboration, "Cops & Robbers." It's only fitting that a track called "Cops & Robbers" has emerged from the collision of UKG and grime, two genres that have spent decades dodging cultural gatekeepers and mainstream approval. Equal parts fluidity and ferocity, its magic lies in how naturally these worlds converge in the hands of two virtuosic artists. When Skepta nostalgically spits about his days as "a little bad boy from Tottenham" over Virji's propulsive drums, it feels less like crossover opportunism and more like an inevitable meeting of kindred spirits. It's the kind of collaboration that makes you wonder why it took this long to happen—and grateful that it finally did. 24. A live performance from Dirty Heads, which has sold “publishing and artist royalties” to Round Hill Music. Photo Credit: Constantino14 Back in “acquisition mode,” Round Hill Music has scooped up “a range of different rights and income streams,” among them interests in Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It.” Round Hill reached out with word of the plays today. Beginning on the compositional side, the UK-based IP investor now owns the publishing catalogs of Terry Shaddick, Linus Eklöw, and Carmine Appice. Shaddick co-wrote Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” (1981), which Doja Cat interpolated in “Kiss Me More.” Besides having a credit on the latter, Shaddick is billed as a songwriter on Benson Boone’s even more recent “Mystical Magical,” which also incorporated “Physical.” Next, Swedish DJ Linus Eklöw, better known as Style of Eye, has sold his “full catalog of songs” to Round Hill. That pile of IP extends to Icona Pop’s “I Love It” as well as much-streamed dance efforts like Galantis’ “Runaway (U & I)” and “No Money,” the buyer indicated. (Eklöw was at one time a member of Galantis.) Lastly, in terms of complete-catalog pick-ups, King Kobra and Vanilla Fudge vet Carmine Appice has drummed on a variety of commercially prominent releases. And his work with Rod Stewart (on 1977’s Foot Loose & Fancy Free, ‘78’s Blondes Have More Fun, ‘80’s Foolish Behaviour, and ‘81’s Tonight I’m Yours) includes writing contributions to “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” as well as “Young Turks,” to name a couple. Reggae rock group Dirty Heads, for its part, has cashed in on “publishing and artist royalties.” All told, the group behind “Vacation” has released eight studio albums since arriving on the scene decades back. Finally, Scotland-born Al Stewart, most widely recognized for 1976’s “Year of the Cat,” has sold “a selection of…master rights” to Round Hill, which is managing five private funds at present. While Round Hill didn’t come right out and disclose the transactions’ price-tag particulars, it did note that the deals boosted its portfolio’s cumulative value back past the $1 billion mark. And in a statement, CEO Josh Gruss touted the involved IP’s perceived “potential for further monetization.” “From timeless pop hits to reggae rock, yacht rock and electronic music, these catalogs contain songs with proven commercial success,” Gruss said in part. “Spanning different genres and eras, these songs have huge potential for further monetization across streaming, film, advertising and much more. … Tracks like ‘Physical’ go to the very heart of Round Hill’s strategy – finding and celebrating songs which can continue to resonate with new generations long after their original release,” he proceeded. 25. Photo Credit: Bang Si-hyuk for Metropolitan City of Busan Hybe chairman Bang Si-hyuk, the mastermind behind BTS, is under investigation by South Korea’s financial watchdog for allegedly fraudulent trading. South Korean outlets report that the country’s Financial Supervisory Service has been looking into claims that Hybe chairman Bang Si-hyuk misled investors during Hybe’s pre-IPO phase in 2019. Investigators have reportedly found evidence that Bang privately informed institutional investors that a public listing was unlikely, even while taking steps to move forward with an IPO. At the time, Bang allegedly entered into a profit-sharing agreement with private equity funds established by his acquaintances, and ultimately pocketed around 400 billion won ($289.7 million) after Hybe’s successful stock debut in 2020. That arrangement was never disclosed in Hybe’s official filings, which could spell a violation of Korea’s capital market law. Neither Hybe nor South Korea’s financial watchdog have confirmed details of the investigation, but they have neither denied its existence. That further fuels speculation that formal legal proceedings are forthcoming. The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) is reportedly considering referring the case to prosecutors via a fast-track process. Further, a separate police investigation is said to be underway. Understandably, fans are concerned that the controversy may impact BTS’ comeback as a full group, following its members’ mandatory military service. The seven-member ensemble is on track to reunite perhaps later this year, as all members will have completed their mandatory service by June 21. An official comeback date hasn’t been confirmed, but Hybe has repeatedly stated that new BTS content and performances are in the works. In March, Hybe CEO Park Ji-won told shareholders that the company was negotiating with top-tier songwriters and producers over BTS members’ need to “regroup creatively” after completing their service. Fortunately, entertainment industry executives close to the matter say the financial scandal involving Bang is unlikely to affect BTS’ activities. “The issue centers on Bang Si-hyuk’s personal gains and doesn’t directly involve BTS,” an official said on Thursday. “Hybe operates under a multi-label system, and BTS is more than capable of making a comeback independently of Bang.” View the full article
