While streaming platforms encapsulate our listening habits for the year, a new study takes it one step further by analyzing music's effect on body image. And it's music to our ears to hear that EDM is one of the top genres fostering body positivity. The study was conducted by Levity, a company specializing in weight loss support through a combination of prescription medications and personalized clinical guidance. They analyzed 360,997 songs across 1,849 body-positive playlists, and asked 1,000 Americans how music "shapes" their relationship with their bodies. 1 in 10 Americans suggested that EDM makes them feel most confident, according to the study, and 61% of listeners have high body positivity. Reggae fans led the charge at 70%, followed by hip-hop, jazz, classical and country music, respectively. Levity Common threads found among playlists related to positive body image were Calvin Harris, Tiësto and David Guetta, among other superstar DJs. The study cites the upbeat and energizing nature of their music as the reason why EDM ranks so high on the list of confidence-boosting genres. In a somber announcement, Alesso has announced the cancellation of upcoming shows due to health concerns and exhaustion. Taking to his Instagram Story, the Swedish dance music superstar said: "I regret to announce that I must cancel my upcoming shows in Australia and Saudi Arabia due to a recent health issue combined with overexertion. My doctor has advised me to take some time to rest and recover to ensure I can continue creating and performing at my best for all of you." It's the "first time in 14 years of touring" that Alesso has had to make a decision of this magnitude, he added. Cancelled performances include Kygo's Palm Tree Festival in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as MDLBEAST's Soundstorm Festival in Saudi Arabia's capital of Riyadh. Attendees of the latter were looking forward to b2b DJ set with fellow EDM heavyweight Martin Garrix. Ultra Music Festival’s innovative sustainability initiative, ‘Mission: Home’, continues to set the bar for environmental responsibility in the festival world. The program achieved significant milestones in 2024, earning accolades both statewide and internationally. From the Sustainability Program Award from the Florida Festivals and Events Association (FFEA) to its recognition as a global leader, ‘Mission: Home’ demonstrates Ultra’s dedication to the planet. Leading the Charge in Sustainability At the 30th annual FFEA Convention & Expo, ‘Mission: Home’ earned its fourth FFEA accolade. It won the prestigious SUNsational Award for sustainability. The program stood out among more than 500 submissions for its creative approach to waste reduction, resource management, and community engagement. This recognition follows last year’s World Sustainability Awards, where ‘Mission: Home’ took home the Sustainability Team Award. In 2024, the initiative was also named a finalist for the Sustainability Excellence Award. Since launching in 2019, the program has achieved remarkable results. It diverted 293,000 pounds of waste from landfills and eliminated over 2.1 million plastic items. Today, it is known as one of North America’s most comprehensive festival sustainability programs. Empowering Change Through Collaboration In 2024, ‘Mission: Home’ implemented 50 sustainability initiatives. Each initiative brought unique and meaningful results. For example, the program partnered with Recreate Miami to recycle 19,600 pounds of construction materials. Another partnership with The Caring Place provided 19,400 pounds of food and beverage donations to feed Miami’s homeless community. The program’s community engagement efforts were equally impactful. Its Eco Village offered educational activities for 165,000 attendees. The annual pre-event shoreline cleanup, done in partnership with local organizations, removed 2,850 pounds of marine debris. Globally, ‘Mission: Home’ reached 7.4 million people through social media and live streams. A Vision for the Future Beyond waste reduction, ‘Mission: Home’ is addressing climate change. Advanced power assessments and carbon offset programs are key parts of this effort. Ultra partnered with We Are Neutral to support Florida-based offset projects. They also worked to reduce generator use at the festival to lower emissions. As Ultra prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, ‘Mission: Home’ continues to evolve.
