Recently, a popular tool, the Spotify Unwrapped calculator, was shut down after facing legal pressure from Spotify’s legal team. The Spotify Unwrapped Calculator The Spotify Unwrapped calculator is a straightforward online tool that uses the listener’s total streams of an artist, to calculate how much money they were paid for those streams. The formula was simple: multiplying an artist’s total streams by $0.003—the average amount Spotify paid per stream. The results are often eye-opening, especially for emerging artists. They quickly find out that the vast number of streams they accumulate often translates into just a few dollars in royalties. The Message After the Shutdown After the Spotify Unwrapped calculator was taken down, the creators left a message for all of its users. The site emphasizes that while the tool had been removed due to legal threats, the formula used to calculate artist payouts was still available. Users can use it to access and apply on their own. The message highlights that despite Spotify’s efforts to suppress the tool, the push for artist compensation was far from over. It encouraged users to take action by joining the United Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW). This is an advocacy group that fights for artists in the streaming era. As 2024 comes to a close it’s time to look back on what has been a thrilling year in techno where there have been plenty of huge headlines. Continuing on from 2023, Charlotte De Witte once again was crowned as the highest-ranking techno artist on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ’s list climbing 2 spots to number 16. She has had another incredible year that has continued to establish her status as the queen of techno with her dropping ‘Roar’ which has fast become one of her biggest tracks along with having further development and success with her record label KNTXT. She also added to her long list of firsts as she became the first female and techno artist to close the mainstage of Tomorrowland Brazil where she enchanted the crowd with more of her awesome new music. When it comes to firsts this year Oliver Heldens also had a big one as he would perform his first mainstage set under his HI LO alias at EDC Las Vegas. He performed this set alongside Eli Brown who has also been killing it this year most notably with his track ‘When I Push’ which has been blasting through speakers all around the world. 2024 has seen Heldens shift his focus over to his HI LO alias where he has thrived making some of the biggest techno tracks of the year such as ‘My Fantasy’ with Maddix, ‘Now Love Will Begin’ collaborating with Armin Van Buuren, and ‘Paradise’ alongside Danny Avila. Having had such a monumental rise throughout this year with his HI LO alias it’s exciting to see where he’ll go with it leading into next year. Though if we’re talking about names in techno that have had massive development this year then of course we have to talk about this years techno sensation, Sara Landry. After gaining a lot of attention following her explosive Boiler Room set in 2023 which has gone on to amass 7.5 million views on YouTube, Landry has gone on to be one of the biggest names in electronic music this year. Back in July she made her Tomorrowland mainstage debut where she became the first ever hard techno artist to perform on the mainstage. With her insane amount of success this year she now finds herself on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs list at number 75 and as the highest ranked hard techno artist. This year has also seen her release her debut album ‘Spiritual Driveby’ which has been an absolute sensation garnering over 23 million streams on Spotify already. This year has even seen Reinier Zonneveld become a Guinness World Record holder for the longest electronic music live performance. He took to the stage at Karren Maar Festival for 11 hours and 11 minutes where he would make all the music live with synthesizers and drum computers through the entire set which is a monumental achievement. Throughout the year he has continued to release banger after banger with an impressive 6 of them passing the million-stream marker on Spotify with ‘Hard Kick Cheap Thrills’ taking the top spot for him with 1.4 million streams. Above & Beyond member Tony McGuinness, who you may know has a long and fruitful story in the music world, released a long-locked-away project of his halfway through the year, a Folk/Rock album titled Salt. And just before the year is over, both he and his team decided they’d give a little more love to one of the best-received songs of the album: ‘Crying‘. They’ve now released the single on its own, own artwork and all, to give the corresponding starring role to a track which stuck with listeners of the body of work around the world. I’d understand the feeling: from what’s perhaps my most played album this year, ‘Crying’ is, also, my favourite track. ‘Crying’ About the single, Tony recalls, “Crying was my first attempt to write a song on the piano, and I think the nature of writing on the piano tends to make the whole thing sound more traditional, at least for me. And so I decided to write a more traditional song, but with a sort of twist at the end which is a classic songwriting motif“. Falling slightly outside the whole Shelley connection of the concept behind Salt, given the fact that this particular song was not born from recalling moments in the relationship of both, “it’s a nice traditional song about a man not showing his emotions. The very first DJ show at the acclaimed Sphere Las Vegas is tomorrow night! Given the cultural significance of this mini-residency and the fact that the Sphere may represent the future of live entertainment, it’s not surprising that Anyma is planning much more than a typical DJ set for this show. We knew the show was called The End of Genesys, but that’s all we knew. We expected some crazy visuals, but now we’re getting a sense for how expansive the show will be. Anyma took to social media to hype up the show as “A Cybernetic Opera”, whatever that means. The post made clear that this show is going to be something more akin to the Swedish House Mafia world tour, Eric Prydz HOLO, or The Weeknd. We’re expecting bespoke stage designs, choreographic visuals to go with the music, and it would appear that the Anyma shows will convey some sort of narrative through the course of the show. One of the photos in the post says that the “cybernetic opera” will have 4 acts, with blurred out descriptions beneath. First there is Genesys, then Humana, then End of Genesys, and finally Quantum. If you’re able to read it please let us know! The last interesting tidbit is that the show will include the world’s first robot cello duet, referring to it as a cybernetic performance. Will this be a physical robot or something purely in the digital realm? Only time will tell. We would not be surprised if we hear a ton of new music and an announcement of another album (Quantum?) during the show. It’s worth reflecting on the themes that the Anyma project has explored to get an idea of where this is going. Anyma has consistently explored themes around nature and technology, specifically around human and artificial intelligence. The very first Anyma EP was titled Sentient EP. The first Anyma visuals revolved around the creation of humanoid robots, and there is a bit of a narrative over time as the robots become more advanced and then interact or merge with real human figures. Then other humanoid robots were introduced at various times. After a while it was hard to tell if there was still a cohesive narrative being told, but perhaps this show will bring it all into focus. We have a cast of characters (several even have names), both human and robot, and scenes that show the beginning of life, the singularity, love, war, the fusion of nature with technology, suffering, and even death. Drumcode Records has long been a pillar of excellence for independent record labels in the dance/electronic scene. Adam Beyer‘s imprint has been bringing techno to the masses since it was established in 1996, and now, 28 years later, it’s still going stronger than ever. Between the caliber of its releases and the rigorousness of its touring schedule this year, Drumcode further affirmed its status as one of the dance/electronic genre’s preeminent record labels, prompting its recognition as Dancing Astronaut‘s 2024 Label of the Year. Drumcode’s 2024 release calendar reflects a balance of both quantity and quality. This is true not only of the productions, but also of the artists behind them; over the past year, Drumcode welcomed outputs from an accomplished cast of underground A-listers, including Eli Brown, HI-LO, Massano, Layton Giordani, Vintage Culture, Odd Mob, and of course, the label boss himself. Eight of the Beatport’s 10 top-selling Techno Peak artists released with the label this year, which, with its 130,000 sales on the Beatport store, led Drumcode to become the best-selling Techno Peak label on Beatport this year. While Drumcode’s inexhaustive list of quality releases helps solidify its candidacy as one of the year’s top labels, its vigorous touring schedule and overall prominence in the live sector ultimately cements its status as such. However, it’s impossible to crown Drumcode as Dancing Astronaut‘s Label of the Year without acknowledging its equally impressive longevity. It’s remarkable that a label that has been around for nearly three decades years can still feel so fresh and so innovative, particularly in the dance/electronic scene, where this type of tenure is a true rarity. Yet even after all these years, Drumcode is still at the forefront of techno — a space that is as robust now as it ever has been — and as an independent label, no less, which is a true testament to Beyer and his team. A 3-day event meant to unwind and be free gone sour! One of South East Asia’s largest electronic dance music festivals, Djakarta Warehouse Project, is facing the heat due to excessive policing. This comes amid reports of intense safety and security measures amid its recent event. Patrons of the festival in Indonesia had taken to social media earlier sharing alleged aggressive rendezvous with local law enforcement authorities. The allegations range from extortion to intense security checks, and verbal threats to the usage of excessive force. Even VIP attendees were not spared and were forced to abide by the implementation of rough measures. Several attendees expressed alarm and displeasure subject to the actions of certain officials. These actions seem to have eclipsed the actual purpose of the festive event, which was intended to be a memorial. The organizers have circulated a public apology with a promise to address these concerns. It commits to investigating these allegations involving the local police. The organizers also assured us they would address the broader concerns about the overall festival security. Attendees are advised to report any incidents directly to festival organizers or the local authorities. They have in turn pledged to declare the findings of the investigation to the general public. These updates would also include any additional measures to be implemented for future festivals. Going into 2012 both Avicii and Nicky Romero were coming off the back of releasing possibly their most iconic tracks as in 2011 Avicii had dropped the iconic ‘Levels’ and Nicky Romero had released the legendary ‘Toulouse.’ When it came to this date 12 years ago they unveiled what is easily one of the best progressive house anthems ever. The timeless classic ‘I Could Be The One.’ The track was first unveiled in November of 2011 as an instrumental and would go under the working title of ‘NickTim’ which was a combination of both artists names. When you think of iconic Boiler Room sets, you picture dimly lit warehouses, neon lights, and crowds packed tightly around the DJ booth. But DJ and producer Hugel, the French maestro of Afro House, decided to rewrite the playbook by bringing the Boiler Room energy to an unexpected venue—a McDonald’s restaurant. The event, aptly dubbed “Big Beats and Big Macs,” took place in a fully operational McDonald’s in Berlin, complete with the golden arches glowing above the decks. The collaboration blurred the lines between nightlife culture and everyday fast-food experiences. The idea was bold, yet brilliantly executed, blending Hugel’s signature sound and deep beats with the familiar scent of fries and burgers. The upcoming event in the Big Apple was one of Elrow’s can’t-miss events that the prestigious EDM event management company had showcased in a worldwide promotional campaign recently called “2025: A Space Rowdissey“. According to the event’s official presale registry site, its official title is ‘elrow Goes Back To New York’ and it will take place at the historic Brooklyn Mirage. However, the presale date for elrow NYC will be this Friday, December 27. To make things very exciting, elrow NYC will be an “XXL Edition”, which means that it plans to be an event that start at sunrise and will end at sunset. In fact, elrow NYC expects to open at 06:00 p.m. local time and the music plans to stop at 06:30 a.m., making this a 12-hour extravaganza of phenomenal electronic music for all the attendees to remember. If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times: ISOxo and Knock2’s joint explosion over the past few years gives us a feeling parallel to that of a proud parent, and in 2024, our admiration grew tenfold. After closing the door on a momentous 2023 — capped off by the release of ISOxo’s debut album on top of their multi-night run at The Shrine — ISOxo and Knock2’s shared Dancing Astronaut 2024 Artist of the Year campaign was in motion just 16 days into the year. ISOKNOCK4 — the newest iteration of their back-to-back performances that originated in 2019 — was not only scheduled, it was happening at arguably the grandest setting in the live music space: Coachella. We could sit here and reminisce about every last detail from Polo Grounds for the next several hours, but we’ll just say that we had the pleasure of becoming a first-hand witness to the absolute bedlam that ensued under the Sahara Tent. Before the two would even travel out to the desert, though, ISOxo would add a debut album tour to his 2024 record. And although they had more than a few collective feats this year, both artists also held their own, individually topping festivals like Ultra, Electric Forest, and Lightning in a Bottle while bringing their ISOKNOCK branding to North Coast Music Festival and Ultra Japan. Shortly after his kidsgonemad (which would be later followed by a deluxe edition) tour, ISOxo would reunite with his San Diego counterpart to give those who couldn’t be at Coachella the opportunity to experience ISOKNOCK in Seattle, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Japan—their first-ever international date under the duo name—or ultimately during a homecoming weekend that requires its own section of this article. But that’s enough rambling about their live show conquests for the time being. A month after their ISOKNOCK excursion beneath a bridge in Brooklyn, ISOxo and Knock2 etched a chapter in trap’s history books with the deployment of “SMACK TALK.” Little did anyone know, ISOxo, Knock2, and RL Grime’s Ultra ID-turned-trap-anthem would be the first peek at 4EVR, an eight-part ISOKNOCK album that they would unsuspectingly set loose on streaming platforms in August, and a project that would earn a place among Dancing Astronaut’s Top Albums of 2024. Yet both ISOxo and Knock2’s comment sections — and even a few billboards around the city — were littered with one prevailing question: When were they coming home? They didn’t just answer it in early December — they wrote a love letter to the city of San Diego. ISOxo and Knock2 reimagined the outskirts of Snapdragon Stadium, hosting a weekend equipped with festival-grade production, an A-list undercard featuring RL Grime and Madeon, two rowdy ISOKNOCK showings, and a concluding reveal of their new event, Niteharts Fest, for 2025. The full-circle weekend felt like a definitive victory lap that further closed their case for Dancing Astronaut’s 2024 Artist of the Year crown. One would think that’s where their overarching argument comes to a finish, but it was not. Not long after their SD 4EVR blowout, Knock2 formally scheduled nolimit, his long-awaited, 17-track debut album, for the top of the new year. Of course, we have to take a brief moment to reflect on Dancing Astronaut‘s personal ride alongside ISOxo and Knock2. Watching the duo climb from Dancing Astronaut’s Artists to Watch in 2021 class to Breakout Artist of 2022, and now, to Artist of the Year, is what every music fan dreams of when discovering what they believe to be a soon-to-be superstar—or superstars in this case. Simply put, their chokehold on the scene deserves a standing ovation in and of itself. It’s what has truly set them apart from other acts in the dance scene, from their rockstar-like showmanship to the ceaseless energy of every crowd at every show, to their genre-blurring outputs to receiving the ultimate stamp of approval from their idols, like Skrillex, RL Grime, and Zedd. At every turn, they’ve managed to somehow one-up themselves, from their performance inside of a suspended shipping crane to their curation of a mini-festival for and within their hometown. This year, ISOxo and Knock2 elevated themselves even further, into a no-man’s-land-esque level of dominance that feels incomparable to anything we’ve seen in recent memory, and we’re recognizing their impact by bestowing upon them our highest honor.
