After debuting his latest groundbreaking live setup at the 2024 Dreamstate SoCal festival, Giuseppe Ottaviani has announced a new alias to complement the innovative project.
Dubbed OTTAGON, the alias will be used as a vessel to produce a new sound for the Italian trance star. Blending the symbiotic worlds of trance and melodic techno, Ottaviani's new venture is named after his ambitious live show, which launched last November at Insomniac's all-trance festival.
The cutting-edge production, which comprises eight Novation MIDI keyboards arranged in an octagon, positioned Ottaviani at the center of the action. The show premiered to a sea of thousands on the main stage of Dreamstate and served as an opportunity to road-test tracks from his upcoming album.
Expected to drop in April, the album will be preceded by a string of singles, the first of which has already been released via Armada. "Find You" establishes the unique soundscape we can expect from OTTAGON. The track leans on a brooding vocal accompanied by heavy basslines and pristine synths, carefully blending the two genres.
Ottaviani is known to be a creative risk-taker onstage, having already crafted three separate live productions in the past: Live!, Live 2.0 and Live 3.0, respectively. Additionally, his stint as a member of NU NRG in the early aughts showcases the diverse soundscapes he's capable of producing.
"OTTAGON represents a new direction for me—one that allows me to explore deeper connections between trance and melodic techno," Ottaviani said in a statement. "It’s about taking risks, challenging myself, and offering fans something fresh and exciting."
OTTAGON is set to return this April at Dreamstate Europe in Poland. For upcoming tour dates and more information, head here.

The popularity of sub-genres rises and falls in the electronic music world, but few could have predicted the demise of big room house music in the mid-twenty-tens. But the genre is now staging a furious comeback, sparking new creativity and connection amongst producers worldwide.
That's according to a recent study by MIDiA and Splice, whose research shows that downloads of big room house samples surged by an average of 188.9% annually over the past two years. Over 5.3 million downloads were recorded in 2024 alone.
The resurgence of big room house seems to be fueled by nostalgia and the ageless desire for connection on the dancefloor. Producers across the globe are tapping into the genre's festival-ready sound to evoke the memories of hands-in-the-air moments that defined the 2010s, soundtracked by influential producers the likes of Martin Garrix, Hardwell, W&W and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. At the same time, they’re reinventing the style with fresh production techniques and cross-genre influences.
This revival isn't confined to traditional strongholds of EDM. Cities like Sydney, where downloads of big room house grew by an impressive 196.7%; and Johannesburg, with a 237.7% increase; demonstrate the genre is perhaps making new inroads.
As more creators from the Global South, such as Brazil and South Africa, incorporate their unique sounds into the genre, big room house is finding a whole new source of fuel to once again become a global phenomenon.

A newly uncovered voice memo of Avicii provides another intimate glimpse into the creativity and kindness of the late EDM icon.
The genius of Avicii is echoing louder than ever amid the success of Netflix's documentary I'm Tim, which has led to his posthumous resurgence on the Billboard charts. Now, a voice memo shared by songwriter Jonas Wallin has arrived to rekindle that studio magic.
The recording from Jonas Wallin, who is credited as a co-writer on Avicii's songs "City Lights" and "Somewhere in Stockholm," reveals a moment of pure creativity with the legendary producer at LA's Henson Studios. The unearthed audio captures the pair working out an idea on the piano, showcasing Avicii's laser-focused approach to crafting melodies.
"To him, it didn’t matter who was waiting in the other room when he was into a melody or a musical idea," Wallin recalled. "His whole focus and world revolved around that little piece of music in that moment."
Avicii making music on-the-go in a still image from the production of Netflix's documentary, "Avicii - I'm Tim."Netflix
Wallin's story underscores Avicii's relentless passion and his empathy as a collaborator. "He stayed to help me set up my equipment so I could record by the piano," Wallin said, describing the DJ as "a kind soul."
The songwriter also shared a humorous memory from the session, when Avicii casually mentioned needing to leave to see "Chris." Wallin assumed he meant a sound engineer—until Coldplay’s Chris Martin walked into the room.
"It’s safe to say I was a little shocked," Wallin joked, marveling at Avicii’s humility and focus even with music royalty waiting nearby.

Taking bolder initiatives, GiNN 諸葛靖 has kick-started the year with the dark and audacious single ‘//MHM//’. Much aligned with the singular trademark that has gained him a breakthrough in the scene, the first single from the LA-based artist sets the bar high with a robust, experimental production in cohorts with imposing vocals.
GiNN 諸葛靖 has a rather magnetic discography, mostly because his tracks brandish his deep, raspy vocal timbre over speaker-rattling productions that coalesce an eclectic slew of genres; from trap, electro-pop, and dance music, the Asian-American artist has prioritized in carving out a niche that is dynamic and genre-fluid, given a catchy label of “Electrohop” by the said artist to simplify an otherwise intricate and unconventional sound. Popularity hasn’t escaped his branding, as GiNN 諸葛靖 has steadily amassed millions of views over TikTok and other social media, while enthralling audiences onstage at the Heads in the Clouds Festival in Guangzhou (by popular indie imprint 88rising). His other achievements include the recent success with his 2024 EP ‘//MAKES SENSE//’, which has drawn hundreds and thousands of plays in a relatively short time.
Following in the footsteps of his most well-known track ‘暈(Dizzy)’, this tune stands apart with its decadent inclinations: ‘//MHM//’ immediately casts an undaunted tonality with the gravelly rap vocals; its partner in crime is a stealthy electro-pop beat, remaining on a four-by-four beat rhythm over a plucky sub bassline, sharpened by interspersed snippets of distorted synths and samples. Defying expectations and lasting just over two minutes, the suave minimalism and brazen performance prove to be every bit of an earworm.

For Don Diablo, artistic reinvention isn’t just a metaphor—it's a command. With CONTROL ALT DΞLΞTΞ, his new drum & bass alias, the Dutch producer isn’t merely refreshing his sound, but executing a full-system reboot.
Hitting pause on his characteristically euphoric brand of dance-pop, Diablo is instead ushering in a surge of shadowy breakbeats and rugged basslines that could power a cyberpunk rave. His alias' debut single, a high-octane rework of Michael Sembello’s 1983 anthem "Maniac," hijacks its neon soul and drags it into a hyperkinetic future.
For Diablo, "Maniac" was a song he recalls from childhood. The track’s unrelenting rhythm and soaring melodies have now been reanimated with a double-dose of driving synths fit for the dancefloors of the future.
"With my new alias CONTROL ALT DΞLΞTΞ I am exploring a more bass music-focused side of myself as a producer," Diablo said in a press release shared with EDM.com. "I have been in the studio nonstop these last few years, and this creative switch-up has given me so many new insights and ideas. I have been making bass music most of my life, but at the start of 2025, the timing feels perfect to launch this new project."

In the dim glow of the studio, a musician strums a chord progression that took months to perfect. Across the internet, an AI churns out a melody in seconds.
Such is the reality of making music in 2025. But Deezer, the Paris-based streaming service, is taking action to ensure human artists aren't having to elbow AI programs at every turn in their efforts to earn a living from royalty-based income.
The company revealed this week that its newly launched AI-detection tool is already flagging 10,000 tracks daily, representing a staggering 10% of all uploads to the platform. These are fully formed "songs" created by advanced prompt-based tools the likes of Suno and Udio. But Deezer isn’t simply hitting delete. Instead, it’s quietly quarantining these tracks from playlists and broader recommendations.
"Generative AI has the potential to positively impact music creation and consumption," said Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier. "But its use must be guided by responsibility and care in order to safeguard the rights and revenues of artists and songwriters."
With over 90 million tracks in Deezer's catalog, the platform is staking its reputation on curatorial integrity. While AI-driven hyper-personalization is on the rise, Deezer is betting listeners will still crave a human touch. Its detection tool, patented last December, acts as a gatekeeper by scanning uploads for the fingerprints of AI, such as subtle patterns in rhythm, timbre and structure that struggle to be masked.
Most detectors fail when faced with new AI models, but Deezer’s Chief Innovation Officer Aurélien Hérault claims their system adapts like a musical antibody, learning from datasets of known AI outputs to identify unknowns.
"Tools that are on the market today can be highly effective as long as they are trained on data sets from a specific generative AI model, but the detection rate drastically decreases as soon as the tool is subjected to a new model or new data," Hérault explained. "We have addressed this challenge and created a tool that is significantly more robust and applicable to multiple models."
With streaming royalties already a fractions-of-a-penny game, 10,000 AI tracks each day could siphon millions from working musicians in aggregate. Ergo, Deezer’s solution is to sideline AI tracks and ensure royalties flow primarily to human creators. Still, the question lingers, can any platform truly hold back the tide?
