The “sophomore slump” is a well documented phenomenon in which a second effort fails to live up to the relatively high standards of the first effort. Common examples include schooling, athletics, television, or films and video games. Of course, it also applies to music wherein a hit debut album is followed by a second that can’t manage to live up to the first.
Below are ten examples of EDM albums where the second was better than the first — not necessarily a “sophomore slump,” per se, as these albums more than exceeded their predecessors.
Modestep – London Road

Fans were excited for Modestep’s debut album, Evolution Theory, in 2013 following their breakout hits “Show Me A Sign” and “Sunlight.” But, for as timeless as those singles are, the album as a whole doesn’t really stand up as it did almost a decade ago.
Then, they released London Road, which we named our #7 album of the year. Far more gritty and rock-leaning, the album did away with the more pop sound of the previous album and leaned into collaborations with Teddy Killerz, Culprate, FuntCase, and Trolley Snatcha, as well as metal with Skindred and grime with a huge collab featuring Rude Kid, Big Narstie, Dialect, Discarda, Flowdan, Frisco, and Layz.
As a whole, the project blew us away and we still repeat it to this day.
Odesza – In Bloom

Odesza’s first album was forgettable enough that when A Moment Apart came out, we erroneously called it their second album. It’s not that Summer’s Gone is a bad album. It’s more accurate to say that most fans today likely discovered them from their sophomore album, 2014’s In Return.
Almost every song on the album is a hit, and each is more powerful with those surrounding it. Though, listening to “Say My Name,” “White Lies,” or “It’s Only” on their own still conjure up equal doses of nostalgia and awe.
Daft Punk – Discovery

Daft Punk came out with their debut album, Homework, in 1997, long before most of today’s newer EDM fans were even born. (Let that sink in.) Singles like “Da Funk” and “Around The World” brought attention to the name, but it wasn’t until Discovery four years later that they truly cemented their status as legends.
“One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” in particular, were so popular they made it to radio stations in the US which typically catered to rock, alt, and pop genres. The latter was sampled by Kanye. To say that Homework is better by any stretch of the imagination, though it was their important debut, would be a lie.
Flume – Skin

Our first of three more controversial choices on this list, Skin is better than Flume.
The debut album from the Australian future bass pioneer has an incredible stranglehold on fans with singles like “What You Need,” “Holdin On,” and “Sleepless.” But the album came out in 2012, a couple years before “future bass” was even a thing, and it’s reflected in the more disparate organization and songwriting on the album.
On the other hand, Skin, even leaning as far into pop as it is, is a far more cohesive album. Bringing on plenty of vocalists to tie themes together helped the album land multiple Billboard placements and will still be one of Flume’s strongest projects he’s released.
Baauer – PLANET’S MAD

Baauer’s approach to his albums is fascinating. With Aa, he traveled to Glasgow, Japan and the United Arab Emirates to record and produce the project, giving it an international sound and appeal. With PLANET’S MAD, he took his focus outward, and imagined what a scenario in which our planet was wholly destroyed.
To be honest, this one is truly a matter of taste. Both albums present in radically different sonic motifs, but PLANET’S MAD is by far a more experimental album and one in which you can tell that Baauer really pushed himself sonically and professionally.
ZHU – RINGOS DESERT

When ZHU released GENERATIONWHY in 2016, he hadn’t yet removed the veil on his project. He still performed behind a translucent screen and wore the staple borsalino, but with a veil in front of his face. To that effect, it almost felt like we weren’t getting the true artist when the album was released.
Jump forward two years and ZHU had grown as an artist and as a project. RINGOS DESERT was a brilliant display of progress musically, with tracks like “Burn Babylon,” “Provacateur,” and “Desert Woman” leading the charge.
RL Grime – Nova

Our second controversial choice — Nova from RL Grime. When consulting a friend about this list before publishing, his response was, “You’re smoking crack.” I’ve never tried crack, so I don’t know what he’s talking about, but I can recognize that this choice could be crazy.
Though VOID is an absolutely iconic album for so many reasons, like so many of the past examples, Nova really exemplified a development in his sound and style that resonated with fans and critics.
Zedd – True Colors

Wrapping up our controversial threesome, True Colors by Zedd is just better than Clarity and if you don’t agree then you’re blinded by nostalgia. Opposite to Modestep, Zedd began with a more gritty electrohouse sound and nosedived straight into pop with his second album, but by that time, he had perfected it. He had made the genre his own and incorporated elements of pop into his own unique production and the result was nothing short of breathtaking. His original True Colors festival sets remain some of our favorite to listen to on boring days when we need something to pick us up.
deadmau5 – Random Album Title

Random Album Title is almost a “gimme” in this situation, much like Odesza’s In Bloom. The album followed his debut, Vexillology, released in 2006. The classic deadmau5 sound got him some festival gigs and the like, but Random Album Title made him a household name and brought the iconic red mau5head to his sets for years.
Feed Me – Calamari Tuesday

Eschewing his original moniker of Spor, Feed Me burst onto the scene in the early 2010s with Feed Me’s Big Adventure, a raucous display of electrohouse and bass that shook EDM with a green, impish character at the forefront. “Green Bottle” and “Cloudburn” were on repeat in clubs for months, but as a cohesive project, Calamari Tuesday takes the cake.
Some consider FMBA an EP, despite it having 10 tracks, just by the nature of its release. So this could be the only example where the sophomore slump actually hits (with High Street Creeps six years later), but for the purpose of this article, we’re choosing to view FMBA as an album. And in that case, Calamari Tuesday presents as a wholly more complete and visionary release and example of what Feed Me was at the time.

Just two weeks after their frequent collaborator and contemporary NGHTMRE released his debut album, SLANDER are now rolling out with their own, THRIVE. Featuring ten tracks with five previously released singles, including “Love Is Gone,” released in 2019, the album apparently tells a cosmic love story.
“In the future, this astronaut is searching for a place to start life again, but he has a love back on earth in the past,” notes Derek Anderson. “The name THRIVE sets the tone as it reflects the spaceman’s journey to make the human race thrive again. During the journey, he experiences relationship flashbacks of his memories on earth as he gets farther and farther away from the home. You’re essentially hearing all of this.”
That certainly helps to make sense of the album cover now.
“An album has been a long time coming for us,” adds Scott Land. “We were never stuck in one place long enough to make ten songs with a singular vibe though. It got to the point where the pandemic happened, and it was almost the perfect timing. We didn’t have any shows, and we had the space for a full body of work. We’ve known each other for twelve years, always DJ’ed together, and shared similar tastes in music. We got to have a bit of fun now.”

When you speak about legends in electronic music, many people will gravitate toward Daft Punk, Justice, Carl Cox, Kaskade, even Swedish House Mafia. None of these are wrong answers, but one that’s often overlooked in the general discourse is Andy C.
Active since the early ’90s, he predates many of the more popular artists by today’s standards. But ask any drum & bass DJ who their top 3 are, and he’ll be in there 99% of the time. Though he doesn’t put out a ton of music, with only a handful in the past decade, his DJing skills are undeniable, often going for 3-6 hours in his sets without breaking a sweat.
Now, Andy C has announced his biggest ever headline event, Andy C presents Alive 2.0, in London at The O2 Arena on April 7, 2023. A brand-new show with a 5 hour DJ set from the man himself, this marks the first time a DJ-led gig has taken over the prestigious venue. This will also be the biggest indoor drum & bass event the UK has ever seen.
‘Alive 2.0’ is a new vision of Andy’s ground-breaking visual spectacle where he takes over the controls of the visual elements of his set and remixes the show live. The production includes brand new Alive 2.0 set design, bespoke visuals and light show – all whilst Andy plays a special 5 hour set.
Sign-up for access to pre-sale tickets opens today, with pre-sale tickets available from September 28 (artist and O2) at 10am, and September 29 (Live Nation and venue) at 10am. Any remaining tickets will then go on general sale at 10am on September 30. (All times are GMT.) Fans can sign-up via: www.andyc.london.

This past weekend, Gordo, pka Carnage, played a headline set at Ministry of Sound and decided to keep going past his allotted set time, cutting the sets of two DJs after him. After Waze shared his experience from the set on Twitter, without mentioning Gordo by name initially, it didn’t take long for social media to put two and two together.
Yesterday afternoon, Gordo released a statement explaining his side of the story, stating that he’s been doing sets ranging from “3 hours to 10 hours to give my fans the best show experience possible.” He wrote that the promoters and management told him that his set time was flexible and “there would be a closer on stand by if I wanted to end early.”
From the statements made by Waze and Essel, this was not communicated to them in the same fashion
Gordo offered to add the two of them to his future shows, though neither artist has yet to publicly take him up on his offer.

After his inspiring album on Subsidia and collaboration with DJ Diesel, FREAKY straight off the back of his North America tour joins forces with the two powerhouse of VLCN and Sara Benyo to create the anthemic and emotional masterpiece entitled, ‘Falling To Pieces’. Releasing on the infamous Lowly Records, commenting on this release FREAKY states:
“These lyrics really hit home with me. I think all of us can agree that at some point in our lives, we’ve been let down by someone we trusted. The feelings that come with that sort of letdown are often unforgettable. Although we are often told to be strong in those hard times, sometimes it
seems like we are just falling to pieces.”

This past weekend, ILLENIUM debuted some new music with Nurko, remixing “Golden Hour” by JVKE.
While it would be great to have a headline saying it was his first remix in years, he actually just released a remix for the legendary Nirvana just earlier this year. So, second in a while will have to suffice. Still, ILLENIUM remixes are very rare and they never fail.
Check out the short clip below and stay tuned for the official release!

Jamie xx, as transient as his releases are, just released his second single of the year today, “KIL DEM.” In fact, since his album In Colour in 2015, he’s only released three other original tracks, as well as one remix, one “live remix,” and a club verison of “SeeSaw” from the album.
The new track today makes use of his characteristic minimal and melodic production, combining catchy looped and chopped vocals with a simple melody and rhythm that is an immediate earworm — but more importantly, perhaps, the minimal production leaves it ripe for remixes to fill in the gaps. Not that they need to be filled in the first place.
You can catch Jamie xx live this weekend at Forest Hills Stadium in New York and at Portola Festival in San Francisco, then the Hollywood Bowl at the end of the month.

Swedish House Mafia has been getting a lot of flak recently for their cancelled tour shows, and even some residual hate for their recent IKEA collaboration (though, not as much). Still, their force as icons in electronic music is nothing to take lightly. Having just released their new album Paradise Again earlier this year, they’ve already dropped a new collaboration with Fred again.. and now have their sights set on the pop world once again with an apparent Alicia Keys collaboration.
The new song is a cover of “Finally” by Kings of Tomorrow featuring Julie McKnight, originally released in 2000 on Defected Records. Originally, the song is quite minimalistic with rolling hi-hats and McKnight’s gospel-inspired vocals crooning atop the sparse piano notes. Now updated for the main stage, SHM and Alicia Keys have transformed one of house music’s classic records into something fit for the main stage. Whether that will be appreciated by the OGs is yet to be seen.

If you’ve never seen Pendulum live (which due to their near-decade long absence from the touring circuit, likely many have not), you’re missing out. The 4-piece band brings classic drum & bass flavor with a live band performance to create a truly unforgettable experience.
Last month, the band performed “secret” sets at both Reading & Leeds Festivals in the UK. Writes NME:
Yesterday (August 26) on the first day of music at this year’s pair of events, a cryptic poster displaying Pendulum’s band logo was spotted at R&L’s southern edition. It features a UK phone number (+44 7888 863751) that, when called, plays a pre-recorded message regarding a mystery show.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we understand that you have come tonight to bear witness to the sound of drum and bass,” a voiceover states. “We regret to announce that this is not the case. As instead we come tonight to bring you the sonic recreation of the end of the world.”
It adds: “Reading Festival prepare to hold your colour.” A similar message is also sent to the caller as a text.
The band hadn’t played a live set in the UK since April 2018, so their inclusion on the lineups was surely reason to be excited. Though our US readers likely weren’t present, Pendulum has uploaded the full live set from Reading Festival on their YouTube, complete with a brand new song and Enter Shikari frontman Rou Reynolds on stage to perform his band’s hit “Sorry You’re Not A Winner.”

As long as DJs have been DJing, set times have (generally) been a thing. You have a predetermined time to play your set, you play out your final song, and the next DJ goes on. Sometimes it’s acceptable, if the other performers are okay with it, to go over a little bit, especially if it’s a headline club play and not a festival set. But to go hours over your time and cut the final two DJs of the night is basically unheard of.
Cue Gordo, pka Carnage, who headlined Ministry of Sound this past Saturday. After his headline set, or rather, after he was scheduled to end, he apparently continued playing, cutting the closing sets of Waze and Essel who were scheduled to play after him.

Twitter responded overwhelmingly in support of the two who had their sets cut, in particular Essel who drove 10 hours for the set.

At the end of the day, Waze doesn’t want MoS to catch any of the flak, and he and Essel are already in talks to play another night.

On first look, the duo RPxSB give off two definite vibes: Bay Area and MF DOOM. We’re unsure if the latter is an influence on Roddy Picante and Stay-Bizzy, or Rock Plaid and Survive Bullshxt, but the multiple pseudonyms, strong visual aesthetic and versatile style of their recent Creatures album series certainly may remind hip hop fans of the recently passed rap legend. Similarly, the Bay Area (RPxSB hail from San Francisco), is also kown for producing cutting edge artists. The weirder-than-weird art scene there is responsible for the cutting edge styles of E40, Andre Nickatina, Too $hort and, of course, Tupac Shakur. Following in those illustrious footsteps, RPxSB’s Creatures may put this duo on the same Bay Area map.
RPxSB aren’t exactly new; their YouTube channel goes back to 2014, where the friends began releasing “spit clips,” videos where they rapped together over popular beats. Roddy Picante also has a few solo tracks released around 2015, but it seems they deided early on that working together was better. It certainly looks to be more fun if their videos are anything to go by.
The duo has posted a lot of these clip-style videos as well as in-studio and fun shots of their life while creating (or partying) over the past seven-odd years, and it was a smart move to document all this chaos. It gave a face and a vibe to RPxSB long before they were doing more structured albums and videos for original tracks. The duo consider themselves filmmakers on top of being hip hop artists. These high-quality videos where fans can get to know the guys will make them feel like they’re coming along for the ride.
Flash forward to two years ago, RPxSB began working in earnest on original tracks and released their first LP, Audioporn. Their film production venture, now called Mobligated Films, also solidified with the release of the first video from this album, “SamOl.” The party vibes were still there with his tongue-in-cheek shot at Pussy Riot, but their sound from this album on would be a bit mroe grounded in indie rap and, dare we say it, conscious hip hop.
Said conscious rap was tempered with a healthy dab of irony, once again A’la MF DOOM or Odd Future, but it’s there nonetheless through all RPxSB’s releases over the past three years, and there have been many. The duo released two full-length albums in 2020 and two long EPs (another sort of series) and an album, an EP and a one-off single in 2021. That’s nothing compared to 2022: the three Creatures albums are their second, third and fourth long-plays this year, and it’s only September. That’s a lot of work.
We’ve established that these two definitely put the work in, but their style makes it seem effortless. As with a really good dancer or actor, audiences watching RPxSB’s videos or listening to Creatures will get lost in the world these two skilled rappers create. It comes both from the flow and the production in this case. With a diverse producion style ranging from funk to trap and both Roddy and Bizzy having excellent vocal timbres and lyrical prowess, it’s really a can’t-miss.
Act I of the Creatures series is Things that Kill Me Inside, released August 26. Opening with a smooth, semi-atmostpheric track called “Skyfall,” the introspective tone of Act I is set from jump. The beat on “Skyfall” is minimal as the duo flex their rapping muscles. No mumble rap or one word per bar here; the flows roll off these golden tongues faster and smoother than the hip hop world has heard from anyone in years. They also switch styles quite easily. “Skyfall” has a sort of Mike Jones-meets-MF vibe where the jazzy, somehow even more chill second track “Weather Patterns” has a more gravely, syncopated format a’la Nas or fellow Bay Area artist E40. Act I closes with “Indie Playlists,” a highlight of the whole series where the pair reminisce about the golden age of hip hop. A favorite of the aritsts themselves, yet another well-produced black and white mini film with 90s vibes that match the song.
Act II: Boar, dropped on September 2, predictably has a much different vibe than the first act. No less introspective in lyrics, the music and verse are more aggressive, as is the subject matter. Second track “Kevin Nash” is downright creepy, giving Geto Boys’s “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” vibes, while the trappy “Fentanyl” featuring Real Ones is has a chill yet eerie quality. The creepily named closing track “The Demon Hour” is surprisingly fairly peaceful with really interesting sound design.
Act III: JOPO just dropped last week on September 9 and it the most lighthearted installment of Creatures. Based  on the cartoonish album art for each installment (Things That Kill Me Inside is a smiley face surrounded by drugs and Boar is, well, a boar), JOPO is a sort of clownish character and the album has more silly vibes, at least musically. Also taking from the golden age of clowns, there’s loads of 50s and 60s sampling in tracks like “Bad Lemons” and “Bip City Blues.” JOPO is also probably the funkiest of the three installments, taking the dirty south and Houston undertones to the forefront. We were right to spot that Mike Jones style, it seems, as the closing track here, “281-330-8004,” is a callback to a lyric in Jones’s “Back Then” hit from 2005 and it’s also sampled in the track.
In a fair music world, the Crreatures series would be blowing up already. With vocal and lyrical chops that rival the greats like DOOM and Nas, indie uniqueness like their Bay Area neighbors E40 and Nickatina and dirty south funk like Mike Jones, RPxSB are almost too good for this era of hip hop. With diverse style, epic flows and something for everyone, if you like real, good hip hop, do yourself a favor and become one of the Creatures.
The entire Creatures series is out now and can be streamed on Spotify along with the rest of RPxSB’s discography. Check out their equally epic videos on their YouTube and VEVO channels.

Among the likes of Hudson Mohawke, Cashmere Cat, or A. G. Cook, Mura Masa’s consistency might be one of his strongest assets. With each project that he puts out, there’s a distinct and characteristic sound that evokes, “This is Mura Masa” — like a Spotify playlist, but it’s just him putting out his own music.
His newest album, demon time, comes out two years after R.Y.C, which released just a couple months before the global pandemic was declared in 2020. Whether that contributed to less recognition of the album would be up for debate, but it seems he’s back with a vengeance now. Calling upon Lil Uzi Vert, PinkPantheress, Shygirl, slowthai, Channel Tres, and more, demon time is about as classic a Mura Masa album as it gets.
Filled with crooning vocals, sharp snares, and a blend of future bass synths and futuristic progressions, Mura Masa somewhat effortlessly showcases his talent in songwriting and composition.
This is sure to be a favorite among his fans. Stream it below.

If you haven’t been paying attention to IMANU, it’s not too late. In fact, now is the perfect time to catch up with the release of his debut album, Unfold, out today on Deadbeats.
The young artist has been on my radar for a big but truly burst into my consciousness with his explosive b2b with Buunshin from the Secret Sky live stream in early 2021. Since then, he’s received support from Beatport, BBC Radio 1, Spotify, and more. Even just looking at the features on his album and you’ll see names like What So Not, DROELOE, KUČKA, Zonderling, Pham & josh pan, and more offering their support.
All of the singles so far have seen hundreds of thousands of streams, and there’s plenty more to discover with the full release. Listen below!

By pure happenstance, I’ve been lucky enough to see What So Not live twice in the past couple of weeks, once at Canacopia in Arizona and once just a couple days ago at his album release party in Los Angeles with Brownies & Lemonade. The first gave me a taste of his current musical influences while the second was a pure depiction of the album as it is, and is now out everywhere.
Without exaggerating, Anomaly is WSN’s best work to date (and he would agree). Though the project spans just 11 songs, and 34 minutes, it never feels like it is speeding through and rushing toward the end. Quite the opposite, in fact, as there is not a second of room to catch your breath as each track bounds powerfully forward, building the story.
What So Not says of the album, “I think this album is the furthest I’ve ever progressed in my music. It’s the strongest, the most thought out, the most evolved version of any music that I’ve worked on over the years and I’m so excited for people to hear it in full. I’m so grateful for the amount of time that I was given to work on it during this off-cycle, which is not something I’ve experienced before.”
He continues, “The silver linings of the world shutting down over the past few years have allowed me to refine and hone-in on this album like I’ve never been able to in the past. For me, this is my best work.”
But it’s not just music that Chris is revolutionizing with his brand-new album out in the world today, with an exciting underlying project in the works ready to bring Anomaly to even more vivid heights, as Chris reveals, “The album is actually the score of a 3D animated film I’ve been developing the last three years. There’s been a taste of it through the DMA’s clip, the EVAN GIIA clip and some of the visualizers too. I’ve been building an entire universe and I’m excited to have people quite literally be able to step into that in the not-too-distant future. I’m creating a show that I’m not sure anyone has really done yet. That will start to come to fruition probably within the next six months.”
Stay tuned for that as you listen again and again to Anomaly. Stream it below!

Kaskade and deadmau5 are back with the second single in their new collaborative project, Kx5. “Take Me High” — which made its debut during Kx5’s monumental EDC Las Vegas set earlier this year — is a powerhouse tune with a belting diva vocal sample perfectly timed for the current music revival.
Compared to their first single, “Escape,” this is far more suited for underground warehouse vibes and isn’t likely to hit the charts quite as hard as its predecessor. Currently, the track is sitting at #32 on Top 40 U.S. radio, a first for either artist. In addition to its Top 40 success, “Escape” is the number one most-played song on US Dance Radio this year. The song has topped almost 35 million streams on Spotify alone with over 55 million total plays across DSPs.

After teasing a new album and new single, ILLENIUM officially releases his new single with Skylar Grey, “From The Ashes,” today.
Stylistically, the song is peak ILLENIUM. Soaring chords, beautiful vocals, delicate guitar and piano in between more cacophonous drops — he’s found his formula and it’s working. As for the title of the song, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was the title track from the forthcoming album he’s teased. Since the last album was Fallen Embers, rising “from the ashes” would make sense chronologically in the story he’s been telling.
About the track, ILLENIUM comments, “This is one of those songs that I feel so lucky and grateful to be a part of. My main goal with music is to give people peace and some escape – and that’s exactly what “From The Ashes” does for me.”
Skylar Grey adds, “[Nick] and I have been wanting to collab for years, excited we finally made it happen. The throwback Enya vibes combined with that fake out drop is the eargasm of the decade for me. And the lyrics completely parallel where I’m at in life right now.”

More than many other genres of music, when it comes to EDM, a gathering of fans are more similar to a community than a group of people with a common interest. (Exceptions apply.) That could be why when community issues arise, they seem to spread like wildfire and end up as a discussion on Reddit, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and more.
It’s also why, when /u/Adventurous_Care6669 asked r/EDM about their hot takes, many of them were community focused. We’ve highlighted a few below, but you can read the whole thread here.
Ageism

As a 31-year-old myself, who’s been going to shows since he was 18, and working in the scene since 24, I’ve had my fair share of people asking me how I still do it. The passion for the music doesn’t just disappear when you hit a number; sure, I go out less now than I did in my 20s, but you can still catch me front rail at smaller festivals and running into the crowd when I hear my favorite DnB track come on.
Rave Influencers

Rave influencers are really a mixed bag. And a lot of it depends on how deep and fresh into the fandom you are. For my jaded self, videos making fun of wooks might scratch an itch. For others, skits about rave moms might feel incredibly relatable. Others still might enjoy parodies of people on their first roll at a festival, asking random passersby for gum and water.
It gets universally cringe when we feel that someone from outside the community is trying to co-opt our world for their views. That being said, guys like Cherdleys, Trevor Wallace, and Blake Webber get a lifetime pass.
Repeat sets

This one is so dependent on personal taste and frequency of shows that it’s hard to put commentary on. But the basic idea holds up to scrutiny — especially during a large artist tour when the music is time-coded to the visuals, there are certain inherent restrictions on how much a set can be changed from night to night. And if you like a set, you’ll be more likely to have fun seeing it again. It’s why recorded sets on YouTube still rack up tens of thousands of plays years after the event. If it’s good, we won’t mind as much.
Underground raves are actually not that cool

This one definitely nails the hot take question. Underground raves, as in true underground raves without a well-known (or insured) promoter that typically are spread via text and word of mouth, are few and far between these days. When you have professional sound and lights, and comparatively higher fees, artists are going to be less likely to play in a storage container out in the Mojave Desert.
But to the point that this user is making, there is no oversight. They are sometimes (not always) run without concern for health and safety and standard rules need not apply. You’re certainly going at your own risk, and the potential for a lifechanging time is there, but sometimes it’s not worth it..
Festivals today aren’t trash, it’s just your nostalgia running wild

I’m definitely guilty of this one, though I don’t think festivals today are “trash.” I’m just getting older and I can’t personally hang with the young kids anymore. That doesn’t mean that the events themselves are getting worse. There’s more diversity than before (though we still have a long way to go) and the stages are getting bigger and louder.
Sure, there’s elements of corporate greed at play in most festivals in certain aspects. But even looking at Insomniac, the biggest EDM promoter in the country, Pasquale has a long history of devotion to the scene and his vision reflects what the majority wants, not necessarily the most devoted among them.
