The Glitch Mob’s very own Justin Boreta has been involved in a variety of lauded musical projects – but none more important than his latest work as a member of ambient/psychedelic duo Superposition and co-founder of the label Formless. Superposition and Formless both have the same mission – to create music with the intention of healing. Each project dives deep into spiritual concepts with the hopes of creating a healthy escape from the day-to-day grind.
Now for his latest endeavor, Boreta is once again pioneering novel ideas in uncharted territory. He partnered with renowned generative artist Aaron Penne, whose code-based artworks have been auctioned at Sotheby’s and Christie’s, displayed at international galleries and museums, and launched on Art Blocks. Boreta and Aaron Penne’s new joint project – “Rituals” – combines generative music and generative artwork to create immersive, innovative one-of-a-kind NFT’s (Non Fungible Token) made entirely from code. After the original NFT release (aka “minting”) last fall, Boreta and Penne are now announcing the release of -“Rituals”- in standard streaming format.
The track listing is carefully constructed, following an arc to echo the original IRL listening experience back in September 2021 as best as possible. The beginning welcomes you into the world of Rituals, as it takes the listener deeper as if slowly dipping underwater, interbeing with deep drone songs on either side, then reemerges facing the bright horizon of infinite possibility.
Justin and Aaron shared a vision to explore concepts such as the infinite, mindfulness, and connectivity in a generative project that included not just art, but music as a central element. They partnered with Tero Parviainen from Counterpoint Studio to design the audio system. Using Tero’s code, Justin created music that is capable of creating infinite variations within the constraints provided for that particular token, making each NFT entirely unique. The music and art are crafted to infinitely evolve, giving collectors a subtly new experience upon each viewing. If left running, a single Ritual will continue generating music and art without repeating for ~ 9 million years!
Boreta, Aaron and Bright Moments are intent on giving back to organizations they are passionate about. So far, the Rituals project has made charitable donations to the Alan Watts Foundation, Stonewall Alliance Center for LGBTQ+, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women US, and the Surfrider Foundation.

Hailing from Long Island, the now Los Angeles-based Billboard charting artist AJ Salvatore has had a wild ride of a career. The young 25-year-old has had releases under Universal, Sony, gone on to chart at #12 on Billboard Dance Club Songs, #19 in the US Viral 50, #21 in the Global Viral 50, and released official remixes for Lil Yachty, Paris & Simo, Bleona, and Shaun Frank on Ultra Records. He’s also performed at EDC Orlando and opened for superstars such as Quix, Borgeous, Carnage, Ghastly, Alvin Risk, Dirty South, Shaun Frank, and SNBRN to name a few.
Choosing to keep a lot of his personal information to himself, 23 year old rapper TOKYO’S REVENGE appeared seemingly out of nowhere in 2018 with an aggressive, distorted style that reminded many listeners of the late XXXTentacion. His debut single“GOODMORNINGTOKYO!” was a viral hit, that when on to peak at #1 on the Billboard US Bubbling Under Hot 100 in 2019. The artist said in interviews he chose to stay anonymous so that listeners would experience his music without any outside associations based on where he was from or what scenes he was associated with. His anonymity didn’t keep listeners from playing his tracks on repeat, and soon his second single, “THOT!,” followed in the same viral footsteps of his first hit. In addition to two major singles, TOKYO’S REVENGE has gone on to release records with major artists such as The Kid Laroi and 24kGoldn.
Now, the two have come together for their hyped single “Vitamins” that is pure energy for the entire two minutes. AJ Salvatore’s production shines as he provides an energizing mix of trap and electronic beats, and pulsating baseline and TOKYO’S REVENGE fast spitting rap flows seamlessly overtop. There’s no doubt that these two make an excellent team and hopefully this is the start of many more collaborations between them both.
Here’s what AJ Salvatore had to say about it:

Eptic has been a producer’s producer for as long as we’ve been listening to him — since his earliest days on Never Say Die, to his couple singles on Monstercat, to his collaborations with DJ Snake or Marshmello. He always brings an extra edge to his productions.
Much like Space Laces who finally released his High Vaultage EP this year, fans have been clamoring for an Eptic album for a while after hearing what he can do with his numerous EPs like Flesh & Blood, Immortal, The End, or Doom. Now, across ten songs including collaborations with Dillon Francis, MARAUDA, MUST DIE!, and HOL!, we get Eptic at his most pure.
There’s a strong argument to be made that a lot of the collaborations overshadow the solo productions, as some are saying on social media. But I think the reality is that the collaborations give a break in the pacing that make them stand out. The way the album is arranged — 3 solo tracks, then 2 collabs, another 3 solo tracks, then 2 final collabs — provides symmetry and clear sections of the project. It’s actually a brilliant way to craft a tracklist.
And as many people are saying that the collaborations overshadow the solo productions, we get some classic Eptic trap and bass house in tracks like “Run It,” “Drum Beats,” and “Ultimate Flex,” complete with his signature sonic tags.
That being said, “Wall Of Death” with MARAUDA (the only single from the album) and “Skill Check” with MUST DIE! are absolute bangers in their own right.
You can check out the full album below now via Eptic’s own Overlord Music.

Swedish House Mafia, the trio of Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Axwell, have just released their long awaited debut full length Paradise Again, just as they head back to the California desert for a landmark headlining performance with The Weeknd to close out this weekend’s Coachella Festival.
The group has been teasing their “debut” album for months, apparently erasing their previous “debut,” Until Now, from 2012, as their debut of record. Regardless, the expansive 17-track features an equally expansive array of features, including The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Ty Dolla $ign, and Sting.
Paradise Again came together in the wake of rediscovering their musical synergy on the band’s 2019 reunion tour, spending countless hours in the studio over the course of the subsequent years, exorcizing new sonic palettes, textures, and tones from an arsenal of analog synths. While the new batch of material is recognizably Swedish House Mafia, it also represents an ambitious broadening of their musical scope, as evidenced by the wide ranging roster of collaborators and guests
“There’s always new ground to break,” states Angello. “However, the biggest challenge was to do what nobody expected us to. We needed to find sounds in the studio we had never heard before and were excited about. It’s super inspiring for me to be in a band where we actually want to challenge ourselves. This is definitely one of the most exciting times for us, because we’re having fun like 15-year-olds again.”

Melodic house and techno DJ/producer Luzi Tudor emerges in 2022 with a gorgeous display of artistry, as heard with her latest body of work Unbound: Victory of Love — out now on Lane 8’s label, This Never Happened.
The tasteful, 3-track EP relishes in aesthetically pleasing melodics and atmospheres, balancing deep, euphoric sequences with unexpected moments that sharpen the senses. Each track is a journey, blending innovative synth work and instinctual grooves, with each concept evolving and growing more powerful as it progresses.
But what really makes Unbound: Victory of Love special is the way it makes us feel. It’s the kind of music that touches your heart and soul — and you radiate a more positive vibration because of it.
Luzi shares of the release:
The tracks on this EP are inspired by the complexities of many forms of love I’ve stepped into this past year. From self-love, to romantic, to platonic and the movement of these over time is something that’s brought me a lot of personal growth. The catharsis of expressing these emotions through my music has been really liberating. I hope that when listening to this EP, people are transported into a state of bliss and can be comforted that while change is the only constant, love never goes away it just changes its shape and form.
Along with the music, Luzi shares part of her personal journey:
I drastically changed the course of my life 8 years ago by getting into recovery from substances and mental health concerns. One of my counselors used to say, “If no one has told you they love you today, or you don’t love yourself today, I do.” And that helped me not only get through the toughest time in my life, but it filled that space just long enough until I was able to start loving myself and accepting other people’s love for me. I hope this EP does just that for people. It’s the way that I can now spread love to others.
Listen here and experience the vast soundscapes of Luzi Tudor’s “Shuffled Hearts,” “Evolve” and “Into Me See.”

Ghost In Real Life is taking over in 2022 and we’re here for the “Metamorphosis.”
The LA-based producer / vocalist’s latest is all about going through phases and changes and fully embracing them. Considering Ghost In Real Life’s imminent rise in the bass music scene, the timing couldn’t be more appropriate.
“Metamorphosis” opens up with a melodic intro, layering GIRL’s signature, euphoric vocals with lush pads that set the scene for the track’s deep atmosphere. The energy builds from there, soon dropping into a colorful dubstep arrangement with playful sound design.

GIRL shares in her own words:
‘Metamorphosis’ is a dubstep song about going through changes in life and staying true to yourself and sounds like a collab between Subtronics and Peekaboo but with influences of Vaporwave music.
With releases on Subsidia Records, Rude Service and Phuture Collective, GIRL is making some serious waves and keeping us consistently engaged with new music. Also, shoutout to our friends at Electric Hawk for the premiere.

Lucille Croft isn’t afraid to reinvent herself — and the producer’s newly released, debut body of work does just that.
The 5-track EP introduces Patient X — one of what we’re expecting to be several personalities that distinguish Lucille’s ever-evolving project, showcasing a provocative, post-human concept based in excitement, romance, and rage.
From start to finish, Patient X packs in fierce energy border-lining on insanity, expertly switching up elements of cyberpunk mid-tempo, metal, bass, and pounding techno into a seamless and potentially deadly presentation.
Lucille Croft explains in her own words:
Essentially, Patient X is a fictional storyline and body of work I created about real experiences. It channels my love for games, fantasy, sci-fi, and channels my experiences as a woman in music, and me coming into my power.
Leading cuts include “Seduce / Destroy,” a collab with TMRRW called “Kill The Machine” featuring Bad/Love, and “Out For Blood.” However, we find the intro track “Post Human” and outro track “More Blood” to be just as satisfying. The EP also features consistent narration from Lucille, which personalizes the release even further.

R3HAB is back with another dance floor banger, this time he’s re-imagined Ginuwine’s 1996 debut classic “My Pony.” Built around the vocal hook of the original, R3HAB’s version of “My Pony” is a more brooding version of the boastful classic. Regardless of the more subdued lyrics, this song will have you dancing well into the night hours. And if you grew up with TRL like me, you’ve known these lyrics forever.
If you want it, let’s do it.
Ride it, my pony
My saddle’s waiting
Come on, jump on it
The track opens with some airy synths along with light pads. This version has lyrics that are way more palatable to a dance track. After the intro, the light pads give way to rumbling bass and more tempo. After that comes the familiar refrain as the bass and some synths build up in the background. The drop is groovy, but a little forlorn too, with a low droning horn synth. This all repeats for one more go-round. Here’s what R3HAB had to say about “My Pony.”
“I’m constantly experimenting with different styles and sounds. ‘My Pony’ is a bit more bass-driven and laid back than my catalog so far, and I’m excited for the variety it brings. This record has been a long time coming, and I’m glad to finally share it. I’m sure ‘My Pony’ will lift moods in the blink of an eye, and I can’t wait to play it live.”

It’s been a weird few years for all of us here on Planet Earth. However, things are finally starting to get back to normal as all of our favorite festivals are starting to crop back up after more than two years. As great as it is for fans to get back into action, the same goes even more so for the artists that we love to see perform live. As great as the thrill of being in the crowd is to all of us fans, I can’t even imagine the rush of performing on a massive stage in front of 50,000 fans.
After three years away, Ultra Music Festival returned to its rightful home in beautiful Bayside Park in Miami. Just as it was for the fans, it was a cathartic return to this iconic festival for all the artists involved after the long hiatus. One of those artists to return to Ultra a couple of weeks ago was legendary Dutch DJ/producer Nicky Romero.
To say that Nicky has been busy over the past couple of years would be an understatement. He’s put out a steady stream of releases showcasing his versatility as a producer including “Why Do I Call”, “Acid is My DNA” and “Okay.” He’s released collabs with Armin van Buuren and W&W, he’s remixed David Guetta & Afrojack’s Grammy-Nominated hit “Hero.” He’s unveiled his side project, Monocule and he’s also released a house EP, “See You on the Dancefloor.” We caught up with Nick after his highlight-filled Ultra set and talked about how it felt to be back, his new sounds, his new dog and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, Nick, we appreciate it. The last time we talked was the end of 2019, the world’s a lot different place from what it was back then. Just tell us what you’ve been up to the last couple of years and how have you been redefining your sound?
“I know it’s been a really rough couple of years, but, at the same time I was pretty thankful. Because I had the time to reinvent myself, a lot of records that I really wanted to produce, but I never really had the time for. And, I tried to grow Monocule as a side project. So, it was a really, really tough time, but at the same time, I’m thankful that I was forced to take a step back.”
You’ve done a lot of stuff with Monocule, I really love that sound, and the last couple of tracks you’ve put out, they’ve been more like house vibes tracks. I remember in your Exchange LA set, you played a couple of house tunes, and I was like, oh, this is different. What inspired that, what made you want to do that type of sound?
“It’s the sound I used to do before progressive. So, when I was putting out records in 2010, it was like ‘Play ‘N Stop”, my track called ‘Camorra’, Green Velvet’s ‘Flash’ remix. Back in the day I made much more like tech-ier, groovy records, and people will be like ‘oh that’s a new sound,’ and it’s really not. It’s an old sound, but re-invented.”
You’re back at Ultra for the first time in two years, and it’s going to be the tenth anniversary of Protocol. Can you reflect on that and tell us what it means to be back here in Miami?
“Protocol Recordings was never really intended to turn ten years old, I guess. It just happened. We grew a great platform, I’m super thankful for all the artists that have contributed to the label. It’s not only me, it’s really a teamwork session, and I’m thankful for everyone, the fans have been so amazing. It’s been 10 years of Protocol, but it feels like the years have just flown by. Crazy, at the same time, it’s just a ride that I wouldn’t have wanted to miss in my life. Starting as a platform to put out records for beginning producers, and now, to be so established in the game, is really great.”
You showed up on stage with Timmy Trumpet, surprise to all of us here. Do you guys have anything in the works or is it just because you guys are buddies?
“We put out a record, ‘Falling.’ Maybe this is the start of something new? I have no idea, he’s a good guy, I have a lot of respect for Timmy, cool dude, working hard, good musician, so whenever he asks me for something, I’m really happy.”
Hopefully this is the beginning of tours and festivals being back on a regular basis. Where else will we see you touring this year?
“Probably everywhere, so long as they’re open. All of them; Tomorrowland, Ultra Europe.”
What other tracks are you working on for the rest of the year? Any surprises or collabs?
“I have a lot of collabs. I have a really cool collab coming from Monocule. I can’t say too much about it, but it’s a really big artist that’s also going to contribute something to Monocule. That’s all I can say.”
Coming out of the pandemic and the past couple of years, I feel like dance music came out, still in a good position. What’s your take on the state of the industry and where dance music is headed in the future?
“I have no idea where it is right now, I just know that people want to party. I feel like we’re all in a great place when it comes to all the artists who are so happy to get back on stage. I feel like everyone gets motivated to see the crowd reaction again. Especially Ultra today, it feels like a new start.”
Tell us what’s your favorite part about visiting Miami? What makes Miami stand out?
“Miami feels like a sunny and more Cuban/Spanish, better climate version of our best holiday resort that we have in the Netherlands. It’s like everyone has a chill vibe, good food, it’s sunset, there’s really amazing sunsets here, it just feels like holiday vibes, but on steroids. I wish I could stay two more days.”
Tell me about the new dog!?
“Ravi. Ravi’s really popular, almost 14,000 followers on Instagram, he’s getting more popular than I am.”
Other than working on music, and playing video games during the pandemic. Was there anything else you did that was interesting or a hobby you picked up?
“I love gaming, I love to play Airsoft.”
I’ve heard about that, they did a South Park episode about that.
“I heard about that, I didn’t see it, but I heard. Gaming, demo drop on the first Friday of the month on Twitch. What else do I do? I drive motorcycles. That’s about it for now, I play legos.”
Any other words for the fans?
“I’m just really thankful for everybody that works the Ultra show today. Hopefully people love the sound as much as I do. I wanted to give it a kickstart for the new season, give some love and some faith for the coming year, that everything’s going to be okay, on the largest scale possible. Yeah, I hope to see everyone in their country or their possible range, really, really soon. Stay in good health, stay in good shape, and I’ll see you soon.”

It’s been three years since D&B, bass music and scoring producer Billain’s breakthrough massive album Nomad’s Revenge dropped and really changed the way we think of cinematic sound in bass music. As the 2019 epic was basically a sonic storyboard that could have easily attached to a video game or film, the story ended on a bit of a cliffhanger with its last track “Revenge” and Billain did promise the journey would continue. That’s what nomads do, after all.
Three years may seem like a long time to wait for the next installment, but if you know Nomad’s Revenge or even just the quality Billain normally produces, it’s obvious this promised sequel wasn’t going to pop its head around the corner a few months after its predecessor. Even if Billain didn’t put the tremendous amount of work in he did, many of us sound nerds are still digesting Nomad’s Revenge.
As promised, Lands Unbreached, which dropped today on Billain’s own label Renraku, picks up where Nomad’s Revenge left off with a lead track called “Breach” featuring Tasha Baxter now playing one of the protagonists in melody form. This track is jumping right into the deep end with incredibly fast drumlines and even faster synths and with Billain’s characteristic pitch-perfect cinematic composition. Fans can expect this throughout, of course, but “Breach” also puts the audience on notice that there are some differences between Lands Unbreached and Nomad’s Revenge, the biggest one being that there’s almost no dialogue.
Rather than being set up as a score to a game or film that never happened, the story of Lands Unbreached is told a hundred percent musically. Fans have only titles and tones to follow this journey with our nomad friends, but make no mistake: it is still a journey. From “Breach” where our protagonists makes their first steps into this new Odyssey to the peace and excitement (and funky halftime) that comes from a new chapter in “iNFINITE Blue” to arriving at the “Cosmic Gate” with Kemal to the jazz interlude “Memory Block” being, well, intercepted by “Interceptor,” it’s obvious each track is a new chapter to a rich story. The music is composed in such away that one can almost see the scenes moving before the eyes. It’s a visceral, emotional and even visual journey as much as it is musical.
Our premiere today comes after a series of relatively chill chapters, with “Battery Boy” and the like seeming to wind up to what might be our main character’s last conflict or decision. Those preceding tracks seem somewhat chill with its bouncy, groovy hip hop vibes. It’s almost as if the travelers have wandered into some sort of robot breakdancing cypher; it’s cool but tense. Then, “Mekanize You” breaks into 174 techno-based chaos and winds up to an even more intense breakbeat. It seems the robots want to do exactly what the title of this track promises and mechanize us all. There’s even a synth sequence in the intro where it sounds like the androids are actually being built.
Lands Unbreached by Billain
When the raw, rough and dancefloor-ready “Mekanize You” ends, we’re dropped into another cinematic abyss entitled “Gigant.” The newly mechanized travelers are told to “awake” and join the dance, a slow, plodding halftime and gear-filled waking up to their new parts and abilities. New, “gigantic” bodies, perhaps? If this is the case, it may not be a bad thing. The last two tracks on the album are called “Reincarnation” and “Overcome” and while both solid, melodic and danceable D&B tracks which indeed give listeners a sense of hope and renewal. Perhaps our heroes have done this whole journey broken and impaired, and being “mechanized” was a rebirth to feel whole again. It’s just a theory, but given what we’ve all been through in the last two to three years, the emotional journey feels this real. Certainly many artists can relate.
“Overcome” is the only track on Lands Unbreached with dialogue and it’s an interesting choice as up until this point, just over eight minutes into the nine minute 30 second track, the listener was left to create their own story from the music, the actual story comes in and reveals itself. It’s the same two speakers as were featured in Nomad’s Revenge, and in fact the outro of “Overcome” sounds very similar to the closer of Nomad’s Revenge. It seems the heavy, frantic D&B of “Reincarnation” and “Overcome” were a set of battles. Said battles are over for not for our protagonists, but not the journey, as the female voice says the same thing she did after the first reckoning, “let’s go.” But it seems this time the nomads leave a part of them as well, as an “old friend” has been lost in the battle. Relatable.
Whether there’s supposed to be a followable canon to Lands Unbreached that follows Nomad’s Revenge or not, each track is its own journey and indeed the whole album is a sonic epic Odyssey. On that emotional level, there certainly has been an odyssey and a number of battles for the world these past two years which makes Lands Unbreached even more poignant. Now with the new conflicts between Russia Eastern Europe, where Billain lives, is facing, the message of this album is all the more apparent. Being from Sarajevo, Billain has seen this sort of thing more than once, and it’s likely no coincidence that Lands Unbreached ends the way it does. The heroes may have won this time and got what they wanted, but no win comes without something lost, and the journey still will never end. We can only hope our hearts heal from such things, whether actual wars or emotional conflicts. Keep this idea and those caught in the conflict in your thoughts as you listen to this album, and the story will be crystal clear, even without words. And most of all, never forget to dance.
Lands Unbreached is out now on Billain’s Renraku imprint. Stream or buy here.

On the heels of a two-year hiatus from his Spor alias, Jon Gooch – more commonly known by his Feed Me moniker – debuts on mau5trap under his alternate drum & bass persona. Having only previously released on the deadmau5-run label as Feed Me, Gooch now takes to the esteemed tastemaker to deliver his frenetic drum & bass as Spor. Spor’s “Let Me Be” is out now ahead of his forthcoming Cave EP.
“My career as Spor ultimately was what led me to meeting Joel in London and signing with mau5trap, something that was a huge catalyst and substantially altered my life,” explains Gooch. “It made sense to me to finally bring these two entities together with a release. Cave was the Latin motto of my hometown at that time, as well as a refuge, solitude, fortification, and a creative space. Holed up, nocturnal, pushing for driving energy and exploring with sound- that is a location I can always come back to.”
The single takes us back to Spor’s original, heavy, neuro DnB sound with pounding drums, filthy basslines, and a driving rhythm. Check it out below.

The latest single from Alison Wonderland’s forthcoming album, Loner, arrives today, and it’s one of her most emotionally-charged songs of her career thus far. She explained the song’s genesis on Twitter:
“I remember exactly where I was I was in the car. At a Starbucks drive thru. With my friend. I was truly at rock bottom. […] I was feeling hopeless. I looked at my friend. Tears streaming from my face. Almost begging I said to him. IS IT GOING TO FEEL LIKE THIS FOREVER?! He turned to me and said
It will feel like forever until it doesn’t.”
“Forever” is the album’s opening song. Wonderland’s raw, glistening vocals capture the first steps in a life-changing quest that takes her from darkness to light, from chaos to an immutable sense of purpose over the course of the album’s 12 tracks.

After not releasing any club music for the past two years due to the pandemic, Martin Garrix has been premiering one club ID after the other during his live shows over the last couple of weeks. Last week, he announced the release of his first-ever club album, Sentio, which will be out on the 29th of April.
“The crazy thing is I’ve never released a Garrix album. During COVID I made zero club music because it felt weird to make festival music when there were no shows. When the shows came back I had so much new, revived energy that I made tons of new club music. We’ve decided to release a lot of the tracks in the coming weeks and bundle them into a club album. I feel like people have collected new energy the past two years, and I can’t describe how amazing it feels to be back on tour and seeing everyone’s reactions to all the new music.”
Beginning with the incredible Zedd collaboration, “Follow,” he’s since released “Limitless” with Mesto and “Reboot” with Vluarr. Today, he follows it up again with yet another team up with Brooks, “Quantum.”
A reunion everybody has been waiting for: Martin Garrix and Brooks collaborate on Garrix’s second release of the week, “Quantum.” As one of the most requested IDs after his Ultra Music Festival Miami set, “Quantum” quickly became a fan favorite after the first live spins. In true Garrix and Brooks fashion, the track is an outstanding banger with an infectious drop.

LINK has been on a tear in the hardstyle dance scene. Coming off his debut EP with Insomniac’s Basscon Records, he followed up with a beauty in “Break It Down” on Junkie Kid’s label Harsh Records. He’s carved his own unique sound and style into the genre, and has definitely caught our attention as an artist we believe has a bright future ahead of him.

His latest single “Break It Down” is absolutely massive. You don’t have to be a hardstyle fan to appreciate this, because LINK brilliantly builds the song around drum and bass grooves and electrifying samples that can’t help but hook you instantly. It builds seamlessly into a four on the floor hardstyle drop and as a crunchy bass line pulses and sizzling synths stab their way throughout the mix, a perfect track to kick off your weekend.
“Break It Down” is yet another solid tune from LINK and we cannot wait to hear more from him. Listen below!

We all love a good sine wave synth in drum & bass and even in rave music in general. In D&B, we’re partial to the sine wave sub synth which builds tension, lets us know of the drop, transitions phrases without losing the bass-based aggression we love so well and screws those screwfaces right up into proper bassfaces. A lot of us may not even know that’s what we love about our beloved bass synths; hell, even the controversial foghorn is technically a very low, rumbling sine wave. It can fade in or rush out and vice versa, and like it or not, it always adds drama.
Generally speaking in drum & bass, sine waves are as described above: heavy, gravely, possibly honky and definitely in the bass register or perhaps the low mids. Sine wave swells that are in the higher mids or high registers of a track are generally the reserve of other, more standard EDM tunes: big room house, progressive stuff…Kaskade and Martin Garrix and the like. If we do find high register sine waves in D&B, they tend to be in the backing sound design or made of very short lines within another melody. Vegas-born and LA-based producer Frank Royal, however, is here to challenge that norm with his new Floating EP, dropping this week on Play Me Records.
Frank Royal comes from an unconventional background for a D&B producer, and it may explain his similarly unconventional composition style. His Beatport page is riddled not only with techno and house (progressive house even! Clutch those D&B pearls) and riddim tracks but with loads and loads of drone. He has his own small drone imprint as well, aptly named Drone Parade, with all the glitchy, experimental, vapor wave and sine wave glory those of us who like the weird stuff could desire.
Now, we’ve said all that to say this: Floating is a solid, heavy D&B offering, more than up to Reid Speed’s exacting label standards. He’s remixed and collabed on Play Me and Play Me too a few times since 2018, including with Ms. Speed herself on her track “The Great Void,” so it’s likely this EP has been in the works for a while. Being solid D&B as it is, none of the tracks on the EP seem particularly weird or experimental. Melodic, heavy dancefloor chuggers, all three. But they’re is something different there, and we think it’s in those sine waves.
“Lumiere” goes right in with some seraphimic high-pitched sines accompanying the opening vox, followed by more standard-sounding neuro-style sine synths. In the body of this quite ravey and semi-throwback beat pattern, we also find some very short, whip-like reverse sines that start loud and fade back quickly. It’s sort of like those starbust you could get from an old Casio keyboard. Dog Piano anyone?
In  “Autumnotrie,” Floating‘s closing and namesake track, Royal plays with sines in both the manipulation of the vox in its high registers as well as in the main synth. Said main synth is cut up in a really interesting way and you can really see Royal’s love for drone here as the sine abruptly stops and starts to create a secondary beat for the track, causing a sort of choppy, spacey feel as the high register vox goes super-high and celestial. This track must sound incredible on a rig.
The most obvious high register sine play comes with our premiere, the EP’s opening track, “Quoriant.” Here is where Mr. Royal uses the siren sine waves much in the same way foghorns have been used recently. The sub synth combines crunchy notes also modded by our friends the sine waves but as the track rolls on, over top of the vocal samples and neuro noise and growing ever louder, this siren sine wave grows to full rave volume, almost hearkening back to the late 90s and early 00s when that siren was in every track on every dancefloor and had ravers constantly looking for the cops. It never fully goes off, however, teasing the listener almost to the point of madness and then dropping into the drony dubstep coda section or whipping through the cyclonic snares like a howling wind. Ever-present and somehow both eerie and beautiful, this is what the apex of sine wave can sound like in D&B, and this is why it’s good to know your drone.

Play Me Records · Frank Royal – Quoriant (Your EDM Premiere) Since we’re not closing in on 800 words for a premiere now, we’ll keep the closing short: we like sine waves, they make good D&B and Frank Royal is gearing up to be a great asset to said D&B. Reid Speed was right to pick these three droney, siney tracks for Floating and Frank’s official entre into drum & bass. Listen and love.

Following confirmation yesterday that Kanye West was no longer headlining the final day of Coachella, Sunday’s new headliners have been officially revealed:
Swedish House Mafia x The Weeknd
The Weeknd and the Swedish trio have a history of collaboration so the pairing isn’t completely out of left field, and SHM were already scheduled to play the festival. It makes sense to move them up in the lineup, and adding The Weeknd keeps the trend of having at least one rapper headline the event.

We’ve already seen ticket prices on secondary markets drop dramatically, so if you’ve been thinking about snagging a ticket last minute, now’s your chance. Of course, that also leaves the question of where to stay which might be a bit harder to figure out. But if you have the drive, you can probably find something.

The Hamburg/Berlin-based duo Brazed have been bumping around the more curated underground labels for a while now, having released on Major League D&B, Audiolith and Reid Speed‘s Play Me in the last couple of years. In December, they were part of Netherlands-based Citrus Recordings’ annual Citrus Recap compilation with their tune “Boomerang.” One of their most popular tracks, however, was a collab with Instinkt on Bad Taste called “Harpoon,” so, with some more recent stand-alones under their belts, it makes sense that BCUK legend Vegas would conscript a single for his Bad Taste label. Enter: “Mutex” and “Contention.”
Similar to the labels that have released them, Brazed’s style is a bit all over the board but in the best possible way. With hard D&B and cinematic sound design at the core of it all, this duo seem to be able to absorb different styles and subgenres into their work and then drop them at just the right moment in any given track, but the overall style is still uniquely theirs. “Boomerang,” for example, is a dancefloor chugger whose snares do actually sound like a boomerang about to whip back at the thrower’s head, while the snares in “Elope” on Play Me are syncopated jazz-style and merge with the breaks and circus-like synths in astonishing ways.
Brazed’s upcoming tracks on Bad Taste are more neuro-forward than some of their previous work but have some cool throwback vibes a’la late stage techstep. “Contention” also has an experimental arc to it with super-fast snares, minimal yet somehow still very theatrical sound design, vintage toms and a growler of a sub synth. Very exacting in its composition, “Contention” is the most relatably “German” track we’ve seen thus far from the duo, who usually play it a bit fast and loose compared to, say, a Phace or a Current Value.
Our premiere today is “Mutex,” the A side to “Contention” and the more dancefloor-lit track of the two. With a snappy snare and some similar-to-“Contention” breakdown toms, this is where Brazed’s generalized hard D&B vibe breaks out into full neuro territory. Still precise and full of syncopation, “Mutex” can still incite a bass face from 50 yards and have dancefloors bouncing. It’s the best of both worlds, really: heavy and danceable, experimental and mixable.

Bad Taste Recordings · Brazed – Mutex With their obvious aptitude to get atomic-time precise and super-weird and minimal with the snares, danceability still seems to be the most important thing to the boys in Brazed. With an intimate knowledge of vintage grooves from the darkstep days and a platform like Bad Taste under them, they can now craft these deceptively intricate beats. This balance will likely become Brazed’s calling card, and if tracks to come are anything like “Mutex” and “Contention,” we’re here for it.
“Mutex”/”Contention” drop on Bad Taste Recordings this Friday, April 8. Click here for pre-order and pre-save.
