matphilly and SUBshockers Team Up For Impactful Project: ‘AMP EP’

For artists matphilly and SUBshockers, music goes way beyond the spectrum of sound. For these talented producers, it is a channel for reflection, therapy, and emotion. This is why these friends have come together for AMP EP The project is centered around matphilly’s brother who tragically passed away in July 2020. 
AMP EP is designed to commemorate his life and show the world what an amazing person he was. While AMP is matphilly’s late brother’s initials, the EP resembles his legacy while also touching the heartstrings with thoughtful, genre-bending bass driven tunes.
Taking listeners on a sentimental journey, each song in AMP EP offers new soundscapes and storytelling. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, offering reflective moments along with thundering drops to get entirely lost in the music. It’s a beautiful tribute to matphilly’s brother and an EP that is sure to keep it’s appeal for many years to come.

Fred again.. releases new song “Mike (desert island duvet)” with The Streets & Dermot Kennedy

Fresh off a stunning run with Skrillex and Four Tet that saw the trio take over Madison Square Garden a couple weekends ago, Fred again.. reimagines one of the fan favorite tracks from his latest album with some new voices and a fresh beat.
“Mike (desert island duvet),” is a club-reworking of “Berwyn (all I got is you)” from Actual Life 3, now featuring a verse from The Streets’ Mike Skinner accompanied by original vocalist Dermot Kennedy. It’s the result of a blossoming friendship between Fred and Mike that kickstarted when he came out as a guest vocalist during Fred’s packed out set at All Points East in the summer of 2022. As two trailblazing artists of their respective generations, the resulting collaboration is a nostalgic spin on the original track that feels firmly plugged into the zeitgeist.

ILLENIUM releases latest song from self-titled album, “Insanity” with American Teeth

We’re slowly inching forward toward the release of ILLENIUM’s fifth studio album, the self-titled ILLENIUM. Over the years, we’ve seen his brilliant album trilogy captivate fans across the world, culminating in “epilogue,” Fallen Embers, released in 2021. We’re now entering a new era of ILLENIUM, yet the Denver artist still wants there to be a certain level of nostalgia and familiarity with his new work for long-time fans.
His new single out today, “Insanity” with American Teeth, carries a theme of self-sabotage within the lyrics. It’s a topic, by roundabout means, that ILLENIUM has revisited fairly often in his work.
“Everything about this song just feels so anthemic to me,” ILLENIUM says of the latest tantalizing taste of his upcoming fifth album, ILLENIUM. “Elijah sounds absolutely epic and killed his performance on this record. It feels so nostalgic and I can’t get it out of my head.” American Teeth’s Elijah Noll is similarly proud of the song, which he describes as “a journey through the dangers of living life on the edge.” For him, it’s about “getting lost in a reckless lifestyle and the inevitable chaos that ensues when trying to navigate a relationship.”
“Insanity” follows previously released album singles “From The Ashes,” “Luv Me A Little,” “Worst Day,” “Shivering,” and “All That Really Matters.” Listen below.

Electro-soul guitarist/producer Phyphr Releases Impressive Debut LP – ‘Catalyst’

Guitarist/producer Phyphr is one of Denver’s most hotly-tipped talents, making waves with his electro-soul stylings and funky, electronic songwriting. Dedicated to inspiring his listeners, the artist has a DIY, self-produced ethos that’s intrinsic to his artistic expression and messaging.

ZHU shares Musical Chairs Mixtape Vol. 2 early with fans [LISTEN]

ZHU released the first Musical Chairs Mixtape last July, featuring seven new tracks and collaborations with the likes of Elderbrook, Mr. Carmack, and more. Casual listeners can expect the release of Volume 2 on streaming services fairly soon, but fans who’ve subscribed to ZHU’s text list or Discord were apparently given the release early.
A post on Reddit yesterday morning shares the Dropbox link for the mix, featuring a 23-minute mix of new music from the talented artist. As such, there’s still no official tracklist for the release so you’ll have to wait to see who’s featured or not.

Deadmau5 on AI-crafted songs: “Unleash the beast”

Music Tech caught up with Kaskade and deadmau5 recently ahead of their show at Printworks London. As the pair fought off jetlag and ribbed each other, the conversation eventually turned to the proliferation of AI and how it could affect the future of music.
deadmau5 might be one of the better artists in dance music to give perspective on the evolution, sharp-tongued and never too shy to share his opinion. He’s also famously tech savvy, which becomes clear when you look back a few years at the tour of his home studio with Linus Tech Tips. And even that was six years ago, so we’re sure he’s made some upgrades since then.
When it comes to AI, a large worry is that the technology will take jobs and expertise away from individuals who have devoted years of their life as a technology that learns from tens of thousands of people instantly per day becomes more and more adept at a variety of tasks. Others believe that the current narrow AI will never be able to fully replicate a human’s creativity, but an AI now is only as powerful as the prompt it’s given.
As for deadmau5, he seems to feel pretty confident that even if AI were to start making full pop songs, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
“It’s pretty scary,” deadmau5 told Music Tech. “But it’s scary in the sense of how stupid music already is anyway, so it’s not that frightening. Like, ‘This thing can make a pop song!’ Have you heard a pop song? Great. Let it go. Unleash the beast, you know – holy shit would that ever open up the niche market for actual musicianship.”
“[ChatGPT] is good. But it’s only as good as what it knows. It’s a huge training model, right? So take the collective stupidity of the world and make a robot fucking barf it out. It’s not gonna be that genius, but it’s gonna get you what you want.”
We’re already seeing AI programs able to emulate vocals, and already we’re seeing some studios create entire visual sequences with the technology. But limitations and expertise will continue to differentiate human capabilities versus machine applications. At least, for now.

New anonymous project GRAIL SOUNDS debuts on Deadbeats honoring the “holy grails” of dubstep

Few artists still make the same kind of dubstep that was coming out around 2010-2014, whether that’s brostep or just “old” dubstep. And that’s okay — styles and tastes change, trends evolve. However, there’s a fair amount of fans who don’t vibe with the current iteration and still yearn for the sounds of yore.
Deadbeats, for all intents and purposes, appears to be leading the charge of embracing and reviving that older sound, especially after signing the new EP from Emalkay, The Others, and Subscape. Today, they host the release of a new anonymous artist, GRAIL SOUNDS, whose goal is honoring the “holy grails” of dubstep, which is where the artist’s name was derived.
When I first started listening to dubstep in the early 2010s, I quickly found Skream, Benga, Rusko, Caspa, Flux Pavilion, Doctor P, Joker, and more who were pioneering their own unique take on the genre. Nowadays, it feels like the sound has become largely homogenized.
GRAIL SOUNDS doesn’t reinvent the wheel. Nor do they claim to — the point of the project is to emulate and revive the older sounds. If you appreciate that sort of authenticity and purpose, and miss the old days of 140, you need to check out their debut single, “GULLY STRING,” out now via Deadbeats.

Phantoms Releases Special 2-Disc Deluxe Edition of ‘This Can’t Be Everything’ Album

Indie-dance duo Phantoms recently unveiled the deluxe edition of their 2022 album ‘This Can’t Be Everything’, via ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective imprint – and it’s a must listen.  
Fresh off of a 6-Week live headlining tour, the duo debuted the new album at 2022’s Life Is Beautiful. Preceding the release of ‘This Can’t Be Everything’, the Phantoms duo took a fresh new approach to their music following a serious period of persona and professional growth. It may be their best work yet.
The Deluxe Edition of their sophomore album comes as a 2-disc release, with the second disc boasting a string of new music and fresh remixes of the album’s original tracks from top names in the space. 
Included is the dynamic, funk-fueled production “The Way You Groove”, as well as a driving remix of top album single “Firepit” ft. Big Wild by Dillistone.  Other remixes that grace the second disc include contributions from Leo Islo, who remixed “Lay It All On Me”, Third Culture giving their take on “No Reason” as well as Fort Romeau’s reimagining of “Firepit” and Covex delivering a rendition of “Do You Want My Love.”  
It’s clear to see that this Deluxe Edition of ‘This Can’t Be Everything’ is a victory lap for the burgeoning indie-dance duo, who have a bright 2023 ahead as they maintain their momentum.

Afrojack and Cesqueaux Team Up for New Festival Banger “Danger”

AFROJACK and Cesqueaux are back again with a brand new single, “Danger”. The two debuted the track during AFROJACK’s Ultra Miami set last year, and now, almost a year later, the track has been properly released. The two previously teamed up on “Drums” which was released under AFROJACK’s NLW alias, which seeks to bring his more club and festival based sounds to the forefront.
Enlisting Dutch vocalist Kalibwoy for his dancehall style vocals, “Danger” is an undeniably energetic track. This time Cesqueaux takes the lead on production with Nick providing the assist. The drop is pure festival bliss, with blaring horns, rapid fire snares and fat synths. There’s even some trap horns in the breakdown after the drop. Audien is back with his first single of 2023, “Antidote.” Teaming up with London-based, classically trained musician turned electronic producer Codeko, and enlisting JT Roach on vocals, “Antidote” is classic Audien. Like so many of Audien’s songs, “Antidote” is endearingly positive and upbeat. The lyrics are really blue-collar, we all live in tough times, let’s find peace and solace in those around us. Noizu and Westend Team Up for New Heater “Push to Start”

Noizu kicks off the new year with a fresh collaboration with Westend, “Push to Start.” They just played an exclusive b2b set at EDC Mexico this past weekend, despite having been on many of the same bills, “Push to Start” is the first official collab between the two artists.
“Push to Start” begins like any other tech-house heater with the bassline and percussion slowly building in the background. “Push to Start” has the catchy vocal hook over the intro, however. The song gets really rave-y during the buildup with the short, groovy synths laying the foundation for the drop. It’s a high energy track while maintaining a sort of old-school/underground rave vibe to it. Again, the vocal sample and the brief synth notes cannot be understated.
“Hyped about this release.” Noizu says “Westend is like a little brother to me, we’ve done loads of shows / festivals together and it made sense to come together on a track. ‘Push To Start’ is made for big crowds and high energy so Insomniac was the perfect home for it.”

A lot has changed in the music industry (and in the world) over the past decade. In 2014, Showtek was transitioning from hardstyle to big room festival hits. Ookay was starting to make waves in trap and dubstep.
Fast forward to the present day, and Showtek have settled into a nice lane of more mature, radio friendly tracks that almost always resonate with a positive message. Ookay has evolved well past DJing as it is now common to see him take his live set on the road, where he plays more 80s inspired synth-pop sounds. The collaboration came about by chance in the midst of the pandemic when Showtek accidentally joined Ookay’s Instagram livestream and heard a snippet of what would eventually become “BT1.”
Featuring those same nostalgic synths, a bright and bouncy melody, and a grooving bassline. “BT1” is the perfect blend of newer and classical elements. “BT1” is a track that is sure to brighten many a warm spring day.

Movement Detroit Unleashes Massive 2023 Lineup

Movement Detroit‘s 2023 roster goes hard.
The music festival’s full lineup dropped today, featuring some of the finest musical acts of mainstream and the underground, specializing in techno, house, hip hop and beyond.
The 2023 lineup features Basement Jaxx, Charlotte de Witte, Underworld, Moodymann, Skrillex, DJ Minx, DJ Seinfeld, Cybotron, Three 6 Mafia, Special Request, Caribou, Kaskade Redux, Zeds Dead (Altered States), Bonobo and so many more.
The lineup runs deep with over 115 acts, boasting an insane amount of talent and variety. Some names that immediately caught our attention include Sara Landry, Klangkuenstler, Mija, FJAAK, Uniiqu3, Green Velvet, LSDXOXO, Onyvaa, Henry Brooks and Audia.
Movement Detroit continues to set the bar for lineup curation and overall experience. The 2023 installment is set to take place over Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-29 at Hart Plaza in Detroit.

Skrillex breaks record for most simultaneous entries (20) in Dance/Electronic chart history

Across the two new Skrillex albums, Quest For Fire and Don’t Get Too Close, fans got a total of 27 tracks to dig into. Clearly, they kept digging and digging and digging as new data shows that Skrillex has 20 songs charting on this week’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, “breaking the record for most simultaneous entries in chart history.”
Most of the tracks from the albums are now in the millions of plays, or if not then close approaching.

According to the duo, they created the track in a Tulum hotel room in only two hours, demonstrating Mathame’s technical prowess and musical genius.

Orbital Further Their Legacy With Their Sensational Album – ‘Optical Delusion’

Few have reached the heights that brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll have with their project, Orbital. They’ve stayed at the top of their game longer than anyone from the post-1988 Class of Acid House, consistently delivering thoughtful, provoking music that pushes the boundaries of sounds and lyricism.
They recently released their highly anticipated 10th LP, ‘Optical Delusion’, and yet again, Orbital further cement their legacy with what is a sensational album from start to finish. Sketched out partly during lockdown but fully recorded in the uncertain After Times, the album summons up conflicting emotions and beguiling images from recent times, when the science fiction doomsdays that the Hartnoll brothers watched on TV as kids finally came true.
There are mesmeric tracks with names like “The New Abnormal“, “Moon Princess”, and “You Are The Frequency” that seem to bend the mind through hypnotic rhythms and swirling sounds. There’s also a few bangers as well, including “Are You Alive? ft. Penelope Isles”  and of course, the incediary lead single, “Dirty Rat,” with Sleaford Mods.
All in all, ‘Optical Delusion’ proves to be yet another gem in the Orbital mine, laced with important thoughts and questions for the human race to contemplate, while still providing club appeal.
