By pure happenstance, I’ve been lucky enough to see What So Not live twice in the past couple of weeks, once at Canacopia in Arizona and once just a couple days ago at his album release party in Los Angeles with Brownies & Lemonade. The first gave me a taste of his current musical influences while the second was a pure depiction of the album as it is, and is now out everywhere.
Without exaggerating, Anomaly is WSN’s best work to date (and he would agree). Though the project spans just 11 songs, and 34 minutes, it never feels like it is speeding through and rushing toward the end. Quite the opposite, in fact, as there is not a second of room to catch your breath as each track bounds powerfully forward, building the story.
What So Not says of the album, “I think this album is the furthest I’ve ever progressed in my music. It’s the strongest, the most thought out, the most evolved version of any music that I’ve worked on over the years and I’m so excited for people to hear it in full. I’m so grateful for the amount of time that I was given to work on it during this off-cycle, which is not something I’ve experienced before.”
He continues, “The silver linings of the world shutting down over the past few years have allowed me to refine and hone-in on this album like I’ve never been able to in the past. For me, this is my best work.”
But it’s not just music that Chris is revolutionizing with his brand-new album out in the world today, with an exciting underlying project in the works ready to bring Anomaly to even more vivid heights, as Chris reveals, “The album is actually the score of a 3D animated film I’ve been developing the last three years. There’s been a taste of it through the DMA’s clip, the EVAN GIIA clip and some of the visualizers too. I’ve been building an entire universe and I’m excited to have people quite literally be able to step into that in the not-too-distant future. I’m creating a show that I’m not sure anyone has really done yet. That will start to come to fruition probably within the next six months.”
Stay tuned for that as you listen again and again to Anomaly. Stream it below!

Kaskade and deadmau5 are back with the second single in their new collaborative project, Kx5. “Take Me High” — which made its debut during Kx5’s monumental EDC Las Vegas set earlier this year — is a powerhouse tune with a belting diva vocal sample perfectly timed for the current music revival.
Compared to their first single, “Escape,” this is far more suited for underground warehouse vibes and isn’t likely to hit the charts quite as hard as its predecessor. Currently, the track is sitting at #32 on Top 40 U.S. radio, a first for either artist. In addition to its Top 40 success, “Escape” is the number one most-played song on US Dance Radio this year. The song has topped almost 35 million streams on Spotify alone with over 55 million total plays across DSPs.
There is an album coming, whether you prefer “Escape” or “Take Me High,” there’s going to be more on the way. Listen below.

After teasing a new album and new single, ILLENIUM officially releases his new single with Skylar Grey, “From The Ashes,” today.
Stylistically, the song is peak ILLENIUM. Soaring chords, beautiful vocals, delicate guitar and piano in between more cacophonous drops — he’s found his formula and it’s working. As for the title of the song, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was the title track from the forthcoming album he’s teased. Since the last album was Fallen Embers, rising “from the ashes” would make sense chronologically in the story he’s been telling.
About the track, ILLENIUM comments, “This is one of those songs that I feel so lucky and grateful to be a part of. My main goal with music is to give people peace and some escape – and that’s exactly what “From The Ashes” does for me.”
Skylar Grey adds, “[Nick] and I have been wanting to collab for years, excited we finally made it happen. The throwback Enya vibes combined with that fake out drop is the eargasm of the decade for me. And the lyrics completely parallel where I’m at in life right now.”

More than many other genres of music, when it comes to EDM, a gathering of fans are more similar to a community than a group of people with a common interest. (Exceptions apply.) That could be why when community issues arise, they seem to spread like wildfire and end up as a discussion on Reddit, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and more.
It’s also why, when /u/Adventurous_Care6669 asked r/EDM about their hot takes, many of them were community focused. We’ve highlighted a few below, but you can read the whole thread here.
Ageism

As a 31-year-old myself, who’s been going to shows since he was 18, and working in the scene since 24, I’ve had my fair share of people asking me how I still do it. The passion for the music doesn’t just disappear when you hit a number; sure, I go out less now than I did in my 20s, but you can still catch me front rail at smaller festivals and running into the crowd when I hear my favorite DnB track come on.
Rave Influencers

Rave influencers are really a mixed bag. And a lot of it depends on how deep and fresh into the fandom you are. For my jaded self, videos making fun of wooks might scratch an itch. For others, skits about rave moms might feel incredibly relatable. Others still might enjoy parodies of people on their first roll at a festival, asking random passersby for gum and water.
It gets universally cringe when we feel that someone from outside the community is trying to co-opt our world for their views. That being said, guys like Cherdleys, Trevor Wallace, and Blake Webber get a lifetime pass.
Repeat sets

This one is so dependent on personal taste and frequency of shows that it’s hard to put commentary on. But the basic idea holds up to scrutiny — especially during a large artist tour when the music is time-coded to the visuals, there are certain inherent restrictions on how much a set can be changed from night to night. And if you like a set, you’ll be more likely to have fun seeing it again. It’s why recorded sets on YouTube still rack up tens of thousands of plays years after the event. If it’s good, we won’t mind as much.
Underground raves are actually not that cool

This one definitely nails the hot take question. Underground raves, as in true underground raves without a well-known (or insured) promoter that typically are spread via text and word of mouth, are few and far between these days. When you have professional sound and lights, and comparatively higher fees, artists are going to be less likely to play in a storage container out in the Mojave Desert.
But to the point that this user is making, there is no oversight. They are sometimes (not always) run without concern for health and safety and standard rules need not apply. You’re certainly going at your own risk, and the potential for a lifechanging time is there, but sometimes it’s not worth it..
Festivals today aren’t trash, it’s just your nostalgia running wild

I’m definitely guilty of this one, though I don’t think festivals today are “trash.” I’m just getting older and I can’t personally hang with the young kids anymore. That doesn’t mean that the events themselves are getting worse. There’s more diversity than before (though we still have a long way to go) and the stages are getting bigger and louder.
Sure, there’s elements of corporate greed at play in most festivals in certain aspects. But even looking at Insomniac, the biggest EDM promoter in the country, Pasquale has a long history of devotion to the scene and his vision reflects what the majority wants, not necessarily the most devoted among them.

Growing up in New Jersey, EDM wasn’t just a genre of music, it was a lifestyle. Born into a family of musicians, DJ, and producer, Matthew Topper had a
unique start to his career. His early releases showcased his love for Big Room house, but with recent inspiration coming from artists like Joel Corry, Chuwe, and
Acraze, he has made his mark on the Tech House scene. Topper Topper is taking the music industry by storm with his recent release,
‘Move On’ The tech house remake of Yung Berg’s classic “Sexy Lady” has quickly amassed over 100,000 streams and is quickly becoming a global sensation. The catchy lyrics and Topper’s clever beat are sure to make & “Move On” a classic in its own right.

For Matthew, making music is all about having fun. While in college, he decided to put his years of experience making remixes and mashups to good use and started
creating an online presence for himself. These days, you can find his remixes and mashups on record pools such as Digital Music Pool and ZipDJ. College was about
more than just making music for Matthew as he also used it as an opportunity to grow as an artist. These experiences have helped him become the well-rounded
musician he is today. Matthew Topper is certainly staying busy this year. In addition to his upcoming releases, he has a tech house twist on another classic, “Dip It Low” by Christina Milian. He is also working on a few remixes and looking forward to playing some shows in the US, especially in Las Vegas, his home away from home, later this year. If fans of Hadley know one thing about Essex-born producer Hadley, it’s that his releases are all over the board. Hadley likes to mix it up both in terms of style and on which imprint he releases. Last eyar alone, Hadley dropped releases on Overview Music, Four Corners, MURKT, Subtitles, Fokuz, Identity Records, Balearic Breaks, Program and RAM. That’s a dizzying array of labels and requisite styles, not to mention the frequency with which Hadley was releasing in 2021. He’s been understandably quiet since his December track on RAM’s 2022 Annual, but now a new EP called Cause of My Environment, due out this Firday, September 16, sees Hadley returning to the RAM family.
For this EP, the stylistic chamelon that is Hadley went hard and rough, pulling no punches from jump with opening track, “Catching Feelings.” With fast and furios snares that not only drive the track but line the edges of each phrase and punctuated by heavy bass drops approximately every four seconds, “Catching Feelings” is named thus for its vox sample and not for any emotive melodies. “Chasing Dreams” follows with a bit more emotion via the sine wave sound design and the vocals. The beat structure remains minimal, with Hadley filling in the gaps with a load of interesting ornamentation.
“She’s a Keeper” closes out Cause of My Environment with some heavy sub synth and ambient work and a surprisingly funky synth line on top of some fast throwback drums and snares. Meanwhile penultimate track and our YEDM premiere today “Dangerous Mind” is easily the darkest on a pretty damn dark EP, with some serious foghorns and a pseudo-jump up beat that’s about as unexpected as the title. If you follow Hadley, you will likely know he released an entire EP called Dangerous Mind on Rebel Music back in 2020. It seems he had more to say on the subject, with “say” being the operative word.
The biggest surprise on Cause of My Environment by far is that all the vox on the EP are done by none other than Hadley himself. From the “catching feelings; it’s a bounce” and “get a little deeper; this one’s a keeper” samples on “Catchng Feelings” and “She’s a Keeper” to the full-verse and quite complex raps on “Chasing Dreams” and “Dangeous Minds,” they all have different tones and textures and they’re all from Hadley. There’s another feather in this producer’s already heavily plumed cap.
If “drum & bass rennaissance man” were an actual term, one could certainly slap it on Hadley, even prior to his busting out his own lyrics on Cause of My Environment. In his nearly 15-year career, this producer never seems to run out of tricks up his sleeve or quality work that’s both danceable and deep. It seems with this EP, Hadley’s also becoming more open and following his passion. It’s about time labels like RAM noticed, though fans won’t expect him to settle down and sign and exclusive any time soon. We can continue to expect any style under the sun that the hyper-versatile Hadley fancies, now including his own vocal styles.
Cause of My Environment drops this Friday, September 16 on RAM. Click here to pre-save on Spotify.

Thanks in part to his popular edit of “Pink Soldiers” (from Squid Game) x “Do It To It,” Zedd was tapped to be the house DJ for the Emmys in Los Angeles last night at the Microsoft Theater, hosted by Kenan Thompson.
Responses to Zedd’s role last night, from Twitter, vary wildly from supportive of his career trajectory to questioning what he was doing there and how his bank account was looking. No matter how you slice it, Zedd was seen and heard in millions of households across the US, despite slipping viewership for popular awards shows across the board.
For his friends over at ‘Squid Game’ and Netflix, the program won two Emmys: Best Actor, Drama for Lee Jung-jae, the first person from a foreign language show to win the award; and Directing for a Drama Series, Hwang Dong-hyuk (“Red Light, Green Light”).

In the visual art world, the term “folk art” refers to a type of outsider art that’s usually home made and serves a practical purpose, but doesn’t necessarily refer to the mediumor genre. Being quite far from anything definitively “folk” in terms of music, London-based indie pop duo Sparky’s Magic Piano seem nonetheless a sort of muiscal version of folk art. From their quirky name to their eclectic style to the fact that their music is sort of sewn together from home using any and all available instruments, has that sort of family art project vibe. Their second LP, Never Twice the Same Colour, released just this past Friday, September 9, show home made can be just as good as anything from the studio.
We all know the story of Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell writing and recording Billie’s first album and all their prior singles in the back bedroom of their childhood home, not to mention nowadays any electronic producer knows that the next big banger can come through someone’s shitty laptop. Quality music almost never requires big studios and lavish equipment anymore. That’s not quite what we’re looking at with Sparky’s Magic Piano. While the work itself sounds quite professional, with good sound design, a hint of electronica and deceptively complex composition, the style of the music itself conjures quaintness.
The main style listeners will notice when getting into Never Twice the Same Colour is a sort of popified psychobilly/beach rock, similar to what was popular in both the UK and US around the late 80s/early 90s with intro tracks “Shiny Shiny Shoes” and “A Pair of Keys.” Fans of this sort of pre-Oasis rock period will catch lashings of R.E.M., The Pixies, The Cramps, Flaming Lips and even some early MGMT. There is of course the undeniable correlation to 60s surf rock acts like The Beach Boys as well. The minimal guitar work from Oli Bartlett is defintiely more of a 90s ilk, however, and compliments his wife Marion Bartlett’s whispy, Angie Hart-from-Frente! or Leigh-Nash-of-Sixpence None the Richer-esque vocals. More modern vocalist equivalents might be Birdy or Phoebe Bridgers, but these tracks are just so spot-on 90s, one must pay homage to the whispy vocalists of the past as well.
Further on in the album, things get a little deeper and heavier with tracks like “Colette” and “Hanging for the Bang.” With heavier, more shoegaze-inspired guitars and complex composition like the jazz trumpet in “Colette” and the orchestral arrangements in album closer “As Good as It Gets” start to really take Sparky’s Magic Piano away from bedroom band to playing around with synths to actual indie pop powerhouse.
Said synths do make a bigger appearance in the second half of Never Twice… as well, but in contrast to their first album Feel the Beat and Do it Anyway! which released almost 15 years ago, synths here are used for harmony and as part of the sound design rather than being front and center. That harmony is key to the husband-and-wife duo’s richer sound, taking a page from the mid-90s wall of sound bands like Lush, Sonic Youth and Catherine Wheel. Meanwhile the synths, flute and glockenspiel, yes, you read that right: glockenspiel, are ornamentation that serve to modrenize the sound, a’la The Polyphonic Spree or Arcade Fire. When listening to tracks like “NTSC” or “Permanent Pen,” in fact, it will be difficult to believe these big sounds come from just two people.
So where’s the piano in all this? Sparky’s Magic Piano may seem like a strange name for a project which contains only one song with a recognizable analog piano track, after all. The band actually take their name from a series of stories put out on vinyl by Capitol Records in the 50s and 60s, featuring a character created by the label named Sparky. There was also the 1987 animated film of the same name, voiced by famous actors like Vincent Price and Cloris Leachman.
Trivia aside, the name Sparky’s Magic Piano is another bit of tongue-in-cheek folk art for this duo whose current sound is anything but folksy. Since, in the album’s title Oli and Marion declare that they’ll have Never the Same Colour Twice, no one can predict that the quirky couple will continue with this exact sound, but with the rich and diverse style contained in this album and the evolution from their first work, it would be fair to say it can only get better from here. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take another decade and a half until album three is out.
Never the Same Colour Twice is out now and can be streamed on Spotify or purchased on Bandcamp.

Yesterday marked the beginning of a new, season-long collaboration between ESPN and Marshmello with a new remix of “Heavy Action,” making the masked artist the first to remix “Heavy Action,” a song originally composed in 1970 and heard for almost 50 years on Monday Night Football.
“Our goal was to take the classic Monday Night Football music and add a contemporary vibe to it,” explained Kevin Wilson, ESPN Creative Music Director. “To get there, we wanted to enlist an artist, a move we have never previously done with a Heavy Action remix.”
Added Marshmello, “Working with ESPN is a dream come true as Monday Night Football and the NFL have been a part of my life ever since I can remember. Having the opportunity to put my own spin on an iconic song that NFL fans everywhere recognize was an amazing opportunity.”

In addition to the remix, Marshmello will provide further musical selections to soundtrack multiple Monday Night Football promotions throughout the rest of the season. Marshmello joins Drake (2021), DJ Khaled (2020), and Diplo (2019) as ESPN’s season-long music curator for 2022.

We’re always happy to report on artists and teams taking their releases into their own hands and going independent. Cultiv8 Artists, who works with a number of artists and vocalists like Highlnd, OMAS, Dani King, TINYKVT, Gracie Van Brunt, Nikademis, and more, just launched Cultiv8 Records.
For the label’s first release, Sentient and Nina Sung team up for “Undercover Runaway.” While the track gradually heightens in energy, Nina’s passionate vocal line floods in with a hypnotic prowess. Then, Sentient takes the reins and beckons to bass heads with irresistibly punchy basslines and guttural growls.
“I’m super stoked to have the first release on Cultiv8 Records. Ever since CULTIV8 started, I could just tell that the company was going to expand and grow into something special. When I found out that we were building a record label, I got so excited. Stoked to have the record that kicks off all of the fun too!” – Sentient
“I was fighting a lot within myself about moving forward and committing in my relationships. I just couldn’t get myself to get past all the stories of heartbreak, both of my own and others and allow myself to be loved, even when it’s all I ever wanted. It’s always funny to me how we’ll run and hide from the very things we want, because someone has convinced us that we don’t deserve it.” – Nina Sung

Hardwell is officially back.
After taking a hiatus in 2018, and seven years since his debut album, the king returns with REBELS NEVER DIE, a blistering 14-track, 54-minute journey through techno and dance. With most of the tracks on the album having already been released as singles, diehard fans will likely find new enjoyment in the album as it was made to be listened to, though some tracks might feel a bit stale as a result.
For the rest of us, especially if the extent of our Hardwell listening knowledge is “Spaceman,” this album is a fresh introduction to a new side of the Dutch artist.

Zeds Dead and Blanke have worked together for a while now, be it the latter releasing on Deadbeats and touring, or even remixing “Bumpy Teeth” with Subtronics. But now they’ve finally officially teamed up on a collaboration and it’s everything we could have wanted.
“The Machines” hits that midtempo sweet spot, managing to escape the tired trend of 2017-2018 when the genre was first picking up steam. Nowadays, midtempo has been evolving and with Zeds Dead and Blanke at the helm, this is perhaps one of the finest examples of the new age we’ve heard yet. That’s not even mentioning the spectacular sound design throughout the song, from the brief glitched effects to the ghoulish sounds of creepy crawlies in the intro against the unassuming acoustic guitar riff.
Honestly, we could listen to this on repeat for days. But we won’t, because that would spoil it. You could though — go support Zeds Dead and Blanke and listen below.

A true representative of Future Rave in Brazil, the São Paulo-born DEADLINE brings a unique sound, which combines the energy of the Mainstage Future Rave with elements of the underground scene, well illustrated by his remix of “Shout” by Tears for Fears with the hitmaker DJ Antoine. Recently, Thiago, the name behind the project, got a lot of support from the Future Rave godfather, David Guetta. The French superstar has been playing many tracks from DEADLINE in his sets during the Hï Ibiza nights and festivals around the European summer, such as Creamfields.

Although the project started in 2014, Thiago’s history with music started early, following his father footsteps who was an open-format DJ in the 2000s. With a five-year career, DEADLINE started to dedicate himself 100% to music with his first EP ” The Light”, made in partnership with Pontifexx and with support from Vintage Culture and Kryder, in addition to releases by Hardwell’s Revealed.
Today, the DJ and producer is one of the Brazilian artists with the highest number of international support, with the list growing during the European summer 2022 season. He was selected as Hype Of The Week by none other than Armin van Buuren, and featured the top #7 on the Top 41 Producers of Brazil Climax Play.
For Thiago, debuting at Laroc was a dream come true: “I remember that I went to the club for the first time in 2016, and at the time I was still working outside of the music industry. I was wondering how could I get to that stage, so seeing this materialize is very gratifying and important for my project. It was epic to play at #9 club in the world. I was able to play a set with a lot of energy and with the best of Future Rave, incorporating Techno and Melodic Techno instruments”, he says.
