At 25 years young, Alfie Channell brings style and prowess beyond the number. He gets it from a variety of sources, both externally influenced, and from the heart.
His mother and father’s eclectic tastes had him hooked at an early age. Growing up in South London between two households, each of his parents indulged him in everything from soulful 4-4 to indie-rock. On top of being surrounded by tasteful rhythms, he’s inherited a natural feel for them too – picking up the bass in his young teens and playing licks without any lessons. That funk and melody you hear in his productions today comes almost effortlessly from within.
Moving up to Manchester to sharpen his musical edge was the catalyst for a focus on drum & bass. Encountering new friends on the same journey, having formidable moments in nightclubs, and starting to get serious about digital production. Here, he started releasing on labels like Fokuz, Celcius, and Inform – his 2021 track ‘Imagination Runnin’’ with 2b.Frank providing an early highlight of the soulful D&B to come. Later that year came ‘An Untitled Summer / Less Talk’ on Innerground – a milestone for any producer – releasing one of the very labels that had a major influence on him at the outset.
After many nights standing in awe of musical geniuses like dBridge, Calibre, and The North Quarter roster, he decided this was his sound. It turned out that Lenzman agreed after hearing ‘Intrigue’, and inking it for release on his label. Channell fits the NQ sound like a glove: soulful, energetic, melodic music that’s appreciative of 2000s liquid funk.
With Channell’s debut NQ EP next up, it’s a pivotal moment. ‘Full Circle’ is the title – a nod to it all coming together, and the spectrum of sounds and tempos he’s included on the 6 track release. We sat down with this bright, young talent to discuss his journey towards finding such a distinctive sound, and how he’s keeping liquid D&B moving in an exciting direction.
Let’s start from the top. Do you remember when you first became interested in music?
Well it was way back now. I actually feel old when I think about it, but I guess 25 is not that old. It started with my parents. My mum and dad split up when I was young – so I sort of see them separately – and they’ve each got music tastes that are different in some ways, and similar in others.
My mum comes from a real soul background. She loves her neo-soul, soulful house, deep house. Artists like Incognito, Reel People, Tortured Soul, Giles Peterson – she had a lot of Giles Peterson compilation CDs that we’d listen to in the car. I feel like as a kid, the soundtrack to your childhood is whatever CDs you’ve got in the car – and my Mum was always playing that deep, soul music. So that’s my Mum.
And how about your dad?
Well my dad’s probably the main reason for getting me into music.
I was a big indie alternative kid at school. I loved Arctic Monkeys, The Horrors, Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, Gorillaz – all those sorts of bands growing up between the ages of like 6 to 12. My dad would be just thumping those tunes, and as a kid I just loved it.
I was also never taught music or anything either. I just taught myself. I got my bass guitar for my 13th birthday, and all I used to do was play basslines to my CD player in my room – and that’s how I taught myself!
No lessons, no books, no YouTube?
No, I just felt it I guess, as cringe as that sounds. Playing with friends really helped too. When you play with people that are better than you, you kind of rise to it. I always had good friends who were really into their music and we’d always play together.
But then at around 14 or 15 years old I started to listen to a lot of dance music. My dad has always been playing dance music – he was a record producer in the 90’s, him and his friend. They were called Mau Mau. He always claimed to me that they could’ve been like Chemical Brothers or Basement Jaxx – but I would always tell him to do one!
He’s had a load of productions, pressed to vinyl. Only in my later years did I appreciate it. Because when you’re a kid, you don’t get the dance music explosion sort of thing until you’re old enough to start going out.
And this is all going down as you grew up in Kingston?
Yeah – and we were so close to town [London], which was massive really. We had the chance to go to so many gigs. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve been to Brixton Academy with my dad and with my friends, seeing my favourite bands – Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Cypress Hill…
When did digital production come into the fold for you?
Throughout most of school, I just wanted to play guitar and bass, be in bands, and perform. I wasn’t too bothered about the…. mathematics of the subject, or the whole theory side of it. I never really learned theory until I chose music for my GCSEs. This is where production took over.
We had this room of computers at school where I discovered Logic 9, and I learnt how to use it during the rest of school. I bought my own laptop, and I just started making music in my bedroom. I had this silly little 15 watt bass-amp which I used to plug my laptop into. Looking back on it, I can’t believe I used to make tunes on that – it was a horrible little thing.
Who were your influences at the time?
It was a mixture between hip-hop, electronica and indie. I was really into Jagwar Ma, King Krule, early Joey Bada$$. And because my dad was big into all that progressive house stuff – Andy Weatherall, Leftfiield, Orbital – that rubbed off on me. So that was what I was making at the start – ambient, boom-bappy, experimental type of stuff.
I started to DJ, learning on my Dad’s 1210s with his records. Then I got a cheap Numark Mixtrack Pro [DJ Controller] when I was 14. I bought a load of music, including those D&BA compilations, and one of the first tunes that I really got into was ‘Yellow Shoes’ by DJ Marky. Along with that, High Contrast was another – High Society was big in introducing me to the genre at that age. What an album!
Later on when I had finished school, I moved up to Manchester to study music production. The first person I met in my class was Jonny Porter (Motiv). He was in my class and had been making drum & bass for years – and it was after class one day I went back to his house, and he was showing me what he’d been making. I thought it was really cool – and that I could get into it.
Building a friendship with him, I was really into what he was doing, and I was inspired to do it too. That’s how I started producing and releasing music under Channell.
With TNQ – how did that relationship kick off?
It was just before summer 2021, and I was really loving what those guys were doing. Everyone on TNQ is a great artist and they’ve all got their own path – when you hear Zero T, you know it’s him, same with FD, Lenzman, Redeyes, all of them. They’ve all got their distinctive sound, I was just obsessed with that.
So I started sending music to Julien, before he had Five Alley, and he was really supportive and positive, and just gave great feedback.
Then he played one of them on a Hit & Run livestream. Lenzman was tuned in, and he apparently asked what one of the tracks Julien played. It happened to be ‘Intrigue’ which then came out on the NQ State of Mind compilation. So that’s how it all started with TNQ.
I like what you said about how every artist has a distinctive sound on TNQ. Totally agree. Do you think that you’re getting towards that level of distinction, or an established sound?
Yeah… I’d like to think so! I feel that what I’m doing is fresh. I’m still working everyday, developing my craft and sound and over the next few releases, so I hope people can recognise it.
When we discussed you having a musical background and learning the ‘analogue’ way to a large extent – I feel like I can hear that in your music…
Oh definitely. I mean I’m listening and creating all sorts … deep house, techno, disco, indie and other things all the time. And I feel like with the stuff we’re [TNQ] making, it’s like… BPM doesn’t define the style.
Some of the tunes I make, if you took out the drum and put it to 120 bpm, it’s probably just a straight house tune. So that’s where I draw a lot of influence from. And obviously I have a huge appreciation for drum & bass as well – my favourite era is probably about 2000 to 2008. That to me is the pinnacle of why I love this genre so much.
TNQ definitely gets a lot of influence from that era.
It’s the more funky, deep sort of liquid tunes that would go off in a club. I feel like when you say ‘liquid’ to someone, people often think more mellow, listening at home, more emotional sort of thing. But what we love is high energy – we love to dance to high energy with melody and harmony. And a prime example of one of the greatest to ever do it is Random Movement, in my opinion. You can probably hear a lot of his influence on my tunes.
‘Substance’ – the first single on this EP – is another perfect example of a high-energy liquid track…
That’s it, man. It’s rolling, and it’s got melody and harmony, but it’s also got that grit to it – it goes from sections where everything drops out and gets a bit dark, then it brings it back to the melody and harmony side of things – that’s just the best. It’s all about the groove.
So that’s out today [as we do this interview]. How’s the response been?
Yeah it’s been great. It’s got a lot of support from inspiring producers like LSB, Skeptical, FD and the big one really is, Laurent Garnier! He was playing my track with 2b.Frank ‘Where We Go’ on his radio show recently, and he said he’s really loving ‘Substance’ too. That is just… amazing. Laurent Garnier, French house legend!
And my dad, like I said earlier, is a fanatic about this music. He knows everything about everything. And for him, Laurent Garnier is up there as one of his favourite DJs. For me to turn around say: “Oh Dad, Laurent Garnier is liking the tunes, playing them on his radio show”. He was gobsmacked.
He must’ve been proud.
He was! Obviously, being a house producer and DJ.
I don’t know how good he was, he always puts himself on a pedestal. There’s a funny story he always tells me that he could’ve toured the world – but he didn’t because I came along. I say “Yeah, whatever Dad… you’re talking rubbish!”. That’s the type of guy he is and how we joke around.
Do you have aspirations to tour a lot?
I would love to. That would be amazing. But we’ve still got a long way to go. I’m here to stay though, that’s the thing. I don’t just think it’s gonna happen overnight, but I’m here to put the work in.
I’d love to be touring every weekend, and that’s the dream really. But for now I’m just going to keep working and releasing music.
What’s making up the rest of the EP?
The idea is to release the next single – which is another funk fuelled track, but more on an amen-roller vibe. It’s a new spin on the amen break.
It’s one of those tracks where, when I listen at home it sounds decent. But then once you play it in a club, I don’t know what happens, but it just changes and becomes this huge track. Some tracks have the ability to change like that and tear up the dance floor in certain situations. When we were at Phonox, Lenzman played it and I thought, this doesn’t sound like it does in the studio? It has a new aspect to it.
I feel like that about a lot of tracks. I think where DJs still hold a lot of value is being able to find those ones, and recontextualise what we thought we knew about it by putting it in the mix, or dropping it in a club…
Exactly. It’s all about context isn’t it. You’re in a club, it’s full of people, everyone’s having a good time, there’s smoke machines and lasers, a big loud sound-system. It’s a completely new experience.
When I was at Phonox a few years ago one of my favourite D&B tracks of all time got dropped – ‘Astral Travel’ by Bungle on Soul:r – Calibre played it and it was a religious experience, I was in another world, I couldn’t believe how it sounded in that moment!
I had the same experience, on that same night! But the track for me was ‘Steady’ – Marcus Intalex.
Oh man – what a tune. You get goosebumps talking about it.
Anyway – the plan is to release the next single, where there will be a feature on it, but we haven’t recorded it yet and I can’t reveal who it will be. The EP will likely be six tracks in total, four of which are drum & bass. There’s two house tunes on there as well – but more kind of soulful house.
The house productions on the new EP and your Five Alley EP are great.
The thing is, I just love music! I find it hard to just stick to one genre. Obviously if you look at my back catalogue it’s predominantly drum & bass, but I do make loads of other stuff – experimenting with disco, deep house, down-tempo. I want to start pushing that more and present myself as an artist. Rather than being pigeonholed in one style.
You’re well on your way! Do you have any final thoughts before we finish up?
Yes, actually. There’s something I didn’t mention earlier when talking about how I got into D&B.
Quite a pinnacle moment for me was going to Hit & Run nights. They would show the deeper side of bass music, and bring you things you wouldn’t usually see. One of the first things that really stood out to me, and inspired me to believe I could do this was a TNQ night in 2018. I remember being at the front the whole time. I was thinking wow. This is what I want to do. Dancing to deep, soul and melody in drum & bass was so fresh to me, and TNQ were the guys to show me that.
There was another Hit & Run with Calibre B2B dBridge, with Tyler Daley and DRS on the mic. It just blew me away. They go deep, dark and wonderful – it’s just so forward thinking. So in terms of going out, those are the nights that are hugely influential to me.
It’s a good reminder to go out and see artists you love or have an interest in – those moments are waiting!

After Coachella experienced historically low ticket sales, there is now data circulating showing that vacation rental bookings are down from last year. The data comes from AirDNA, which tracks short-term rental data from Vrbo and Airbnb, and shows that bookings for both weekends of the Indio festival are down from last year.
According to AirDNA, three months ago, bookings were down by 26% compared to the same time last year. While that gap has since narrowed, it’s still not where one would expect; AirDNA also reported that three weeks out from the festival, 48,000 nights had been booked, down 12% from the same time in 2023.
This news follows the slowest ticket sales the festival has seen in years. Historically, Coachella tickets have sold out in within just a few hours, after stressed-out fans endured long virtual ticket queues. This year, tickets went on sale Friday, January 19th, and took almost a month to sell out. Tickets for Weekend 2 are actually still available.
Coachella is set to return April 12th-14th and 19th-21st in Indio, California. This year’s lineup features Doja Cat, Tyler the Creator, Lana Del Rey, No Doubt, Charlotte de Witte, ISOxo & Knock2, Peggy Gou, Adriatique, Mall Grab, LE SSERAFIM, Reinier Zonneveld, Purple Disco Machine, BICEP, Anyma, Steve Angello, John Summit, Dom Dolla, Gesaffelstein, and more.

The day music fans have been waiting for is finally here – Coachella has dropped the highly anticipated set times for the first weekend of the 2024 festival!
If you’re headed to the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio over the next few days, you’ll want to study these schedules closely to map out your ideal weekend. As always, there are some brutal set conflicts to grapple with across the various outdoor stages and tents.
Let’s break down some of the biggest highlights and challenges:
Friday, April 12th
The opening night kicks off with rising Mexican star Peso Pluma hitting the main Coachella stage at 9:05 pm, leading into the weekend’s first headliner Lana Del Rey at 11:20 pm. But you’ll have to choose between several can’t-miss acts in the preceding hours, including French indie dance icons Justice, British alt-rockers Deftones, and Australian singer-songwriter Faye Webster (whose sets all partially overlap).
Saturday, April 13th
The weekend’s biggest surprise was the last-minute addition of Vampire Weekend to the lineup. They’ll play the Outdoor Theatre at 5:00 pm, while legendary ska/rock band No Doubt reunites on the main stage at 9:25 pm before headliner Tyler, The Creator closes out the night. Schedule conflicts abound in the evening with Grimes vs. Bleachers vs. Oneohtrix Point Never vs. Ice Spice among the most difficult choices.
Sunday, April 14th
The final day is headlined by Doja Cat at 10:25 pm, following a stacked lineup including J Balvin, Jhene Aiko, Khruangbin, and Taking Back Sunday earlier in the day. Underground indie bands Feeble Little Horse and Mandy, Indiana offer a welcome palate cleanser between bigger acts. Lil Yachty and DJ Snake also have unfortunately overlapping set times.
No matter which acts you prioritize, agonizing choices will have to be made. Arguably the biggest struggle is choosing between new and emerging artists getting their big break on smaller stages versus established festival veterans.
Those tough decisions are all part of the classic Coachella experience! For those stuck at home, YouTube will be livestreaming select performances across multiple channels all weekend long.

London music duo Eli & Fur present a brand new audiovisual recording, “Insomnia,” kickstarting a refreshed musical journey piloted by the esteemed indie-electronic outfit. Now streaming via [PIAS] Électronique, the “Pegasus” co-producers’ latest dazzles and inspires, marked by a tastefully repetitive vocal chop, its crisp and entrancing vocal topline, and the melodically addictive stutter effects that cut through each drop section. In an Instagram post announcing the track release, Eli & Fur expressed,
Evidently, a sophomore album from the Found In The Wild co-creators may not be too far off the horizon. “Insomnia” arrives alongside its paired visual component shortly after the release of “Halo,” Eli & Fur’s first collaborative single of 2024 on NYX Music, which may or may not be apart of the act’s apparent “new journey.” Regardless, “Insomnia” will surely go down as one of Eli & Fur’s flagship solo records. Imagine it's 2013. Skrillex's brostep is decimating crowds, Avicii is triggering spiritual dancefloor awakenings, a 17-year-old Martin Garrix drops "Animals" and the retina-searing lasers of Ultra are changing eyeballs forever.
While that EDM serotonin rush still remains, the industry looks different over a decade later, when its consumers often prioritize the intimate, walk-on-air euphoria of a dark warehouse rave over the regurgitated frills of a major festival. From a cultural standpoint, the chasm between those two formats keeps growing—but for its artists, the road between the two is paved with uncertainty and hardship.
So where exactly do DJs fit into this industry in flux? And what challenges do they face?
Without the peace of mind that comes with blitzkrieg marketing offensives and veteran negotiators like CAA's Alex Becket, most must navigate choppy waters solo as inflationary pressures hike the rising costs of touring to unsustainable levels. For those artists, it's a lonely masterclass in DIY hustle.
Becket is the powerhouse agent behind—among many others—RÜFÜS DU SOL, Bedouin, Monolink and G Jones, the lattermost of whom was recently named by EDM.com as one of the world's best electronic music producers. He has been with CAA for nearly two decades and became the firm's first electronic music agent in 2012 before nabbing a spot in Billboard’s venerable "Dance Power Players" list in 2019.
It's no secret that leading agencies like CAA wield industry tentacles to curate prime festival real estate as a means to nurture the eggs of their mainstream golden geese. In other words, the stages of major festivals are the ultimate slingshots for new albums. Meanwhile, their electronic artists—as well as those repped by independent bookers across the nation—are left tasting the dust of their hip-hop and pop contemporaries.
But if there's any silver lining, blue-chip agencies and festivals today are acutely focused on unearthing and booking EDM talent, according to Becket, who tells us he expects to see more dance acts on big stages in the near future.
Alex Becket, a music agent at CAA, one of the world's most influential entertainment and sports talent agencies. c/o Creative Artists Agency
Once relegated to the fringes of the festival circuit, dance music producers are now commanding top billing and drawing massive audiences to marquee mainstream events like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, all of whom tapped ODESZA to headline last year.
Meanwhile, Coachella's organizers in 2023 approached the trio of Skrillex, Fred again.. and Four Tet to close out the world's quintessential music festival in lieu of a spurned Frank Ocean. Prior to their last-minute headlining set, Coachella counted only Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia—themselves replacements after stepping in for Kanye West in 2022—as their only other DJ headliners in the last decade.
Now, after a year teeming with unforgettable EDM moments, Coachella is introducing a brand-new stage to serve as the festival's de facto epicenter of rave music. The ambitious stage, Quasar, will feature three-hour DJ sets by RÜFÜS DU SOL and a cancer-free Michael Bibi, among other deeply influential dance music artists.
Ahead of Coachella's return this weekend, we caught up with Becket to discuss Quasar as well as the evolving relationship between major festivals and the electronic dance music community.
EDM.com: After Coachella made the decision to blend Sahara's lineups with more mainstream artists, it seems Quasar is the festival's new epicenter of electronic dance music. Why now?
Alex Becket: The way "underground" house and techno music has become so popular in recent years, and arguably is now the mainstream dance music of the day, the traditional home at the festival for that sound, the Yuma Tent, has become too small to service all the demand. It’s a great sign for the health of our industry that the festival needs a stage like Quasar for this growing audience.
EDM.com: Take us behind the scenes of your discussions with your artists about Quasar. What about the new stage was so appealing to them?
Alex Becket: Coachella has been such a pioneer for dance music over the years and they’ve done it again with Quasar. The opportunity to play an extended three-hour set is unheard of amongst multi-genre contemporary festivals and represents the core culture around DJs and raves. It's exciting for these artists to have the freedom to take fans on a journey without the constraints of 60–75-minute sets that are typical at the festival.
EDM.com: We've seen a surge in EDM bookings at festivals like Coachella. Can you elaborate on the strategic advantages—beyond pure popularity—that booking EDM artists brings to major festivals?
Alex Becket: Coachella has been booking electronic artists for decades but it's true this year feels particularly dance-heavy. For whatever reason, I think other genres are down right now and electronic is filling up a lot of that void on festival lineups. Dance music appeals to a broader audience than a lot of other genres, and that drives mass appeal.
EDM.com: What role, if any, has technological advancements in live production and stage setups played in making EDM acts more appealing for festival organizers? And to what extent does this focus on live spectacle factor into a festival's decision-making when executing lineups?
Alex Becket: Festivals want big shows and big moments so it factors in a lot for them. Big production was an essential part of the "EDM" boom in the early 2010s and has always been a big part of the EDM experience. "Underground" shows with no production emerged in response to that, and now you’re seeing the pendulum swing back the other way in many cases with underground artists building big shows. In this way we're seeing big productions with better music and it's a winning combo.
EDM.com: Are there any particular up-and-coming artists or sub-genres that you anticipate will gain even more traction in the festival circuit in the near future?
Alex Becket: Hard techno is definitely having a moment with younger generations, and we're having a ton of success at CAA in the minimal tech and minimal deep tech space. Our new colleague Julian Teixeira has a lot of the best up-and-coming artists in this world like Chris Stussy, Dennis Cruz and Ben Sterling.
RÜFÜS DU SOL, who will perform at the debut of Coachella's new Quasar stage, are part of Alex Becket's roster at CAA.Michael Drummond
EDM.com: What challenges or obstacles do EDM artists face when it comes to securing prominent slots at major festivals dominated by more traditional rock, hip-hop and pop acts?
Alex Becket: DJs and electronic artists have been sharing the top lines at festivals with rock, hip-hop and pop acts for years. In the past, relatively few dance artists headlined hard tickets and their value was closely tied to VIP sales (still does) which is harder to quantify and not public information. That’s a different metric that made direct comparisons difficult and worked against dance artists for prominent slots or billing, but many dance artists live in the hard ticket world now and it’s not much of a thing.
EDM.com: How do you see the festival landscape evolving in the next five to 10 years when it comes to the representation of EDM and other electronic music genres on major lineups?
Alex Becket: The sky's the limit! One of dance music's greatest strengths is diversity, both of the audience and the music. I expect to see more dance acts on big and small stages alike, and different music thrives in different settings.
I love the variety of experiences Coachella offers in this way. You can go see an insane visual spectacular like Anyma at the Sahara Tent, then pop over to the Do LaB for the best dance party at the festival, then head to an immersive experience with RÜFÜS DU SOL (DJ SET) at Quasar, then end your night with Adriatique at the Yuma for a true nightclub experience in the middle of a festival. The options are incredible!

Coachella is right around the corner and billboards are popping up on the road to Indio, California. On your way up 10 Freeway you might notice a funny one, well at least to us, not Coachella.
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is behind a Coachella-themed billboard that says: “Catch more than vibes? FreeSTDcheck.org.” That is certainly a statement. Coachella has contacted them to take it down but the billboard will remain there for both upcoming Coachella weekends on April 12-14 and April 19-21.
On the billboard, you can see a clear picture of the festival. You can see why the festival is unhappy but also this is helpful information for anyone that might catch an STD.
Coachella just announced an NFL-style livestream that will include 6 stages this year. You will be able to play up to 4 stages at once on YouTube and change audio as you need!
The Coachella lineup includes headliners Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, Doja Cat, and No Doubt. Other high-ticketed EDM performers include Charlotte de Witte, ISOxo & Knock2, Peggy Gou, Adriatique, Mall Grab, LE SSERAFIM, Reinier Zonneveld, Purple Disco Machine, and BICEP.

Denmark’s Roskilde Festival completes the lineup for this year’s festival with 53 new music acts, including 21 Savage, PinkPantheress, Amaarae, Barry Can’t Swim, Belle & Sebastian, Fridayy, Gloria Groove, Tinashe, and Young Nudy. The non-profit festival also adds many new names to its Art and Activism programme.

From June 29 to July 6, close to 200 acts will play Roskilde Festival, Northern Europe’s biggest music festival. Today, the festival presents its full lineup, with SZA, Doja Cat, Kali Uchis, Foo Fighters, and Skrillex among its previously revealed headliners.
Today’s announcement features 53 new music acts, including 21 Savage. In January, the Atlanta rapper climbed to the top of Billboard 200 for the fourth time with the album American Dream, proving once again that he is among the biggest artists in the world right now. The show at Roskilde Festival will be 21 Savage’s first in Denmark.
PinkPantheress, Amaarae, Belle & Sebastian, Tinashe and Young Nudy are also new additions, as well as Denmark’s very own Erika de Casier, who will be playing her biggest show yet on home soil.

Furthermore, festival participants will get the chance to experience Kakuma Sound, a group based in one of the world’s biggest refugee camps, playing in Europe for the first time. There’s also ritual dance from Western Java with Tarawangsa Sunda Lugina, a full-scale party with iconic Brazilian drag queen Gloria Groove, and much more to discover.
This year’s music lineup spans across 43 countries and five continents.
“Roskilde Festival is the place to explore some of the biggest artists of our time next to a rich and groundbreaking musical treasure from all corners of the globe. Our lineup will undoubtedly give rise to a lot of intriguing and inspiring encounters,” says Anders Wahrén, Roskilde Festival’s Program Director.

Art and activism address big issues
Roskilde Festival 2024 also offers a wide range of talks, performances, workshops, and artworks created specifically for the festival, focusing on some of the most current themes right now. In addition to today’s music announcement, 43 acts are added to the festival’s lineup of art and activism.

Prominent additions include Denmark-based Jordanian-Palestinian artist Banaan Al-Nasser, exhibiting the art installation ‘In Memory of Home’, reflecting on who has the right to a home and a voice. The Danish artist Ragnhild May presents a breathtaking over-the-top glamour-pop performance that offers a critical perspective on music and media culture, while the Dutch-American artist Lara Schnitger focuses on the struggle for women’s equality with a hybrid of performance and protest.
At Flokkr, the festival’s stage for activistic events, participants can listen to stories from refugees, participate in workshops on biodiversity, attend a celebration of artistic and cultural diversity with a focus on marginalized LGBTQ+ individuals, and much more.
“Roskilde Festival is an eight-day celebration of community that flickers between euphoria and intimacy, between transformation and salvation. Being a non-profit festival aimed at creating a positive impact, it is important for us to present music and art that introduce new ideas and thoughts, and activism that directly addresses the way the world is and could be. I think we truly accomplish that with this programme,” says Anders Wahrén.

You can’t mess with the inclusive bender king himself John Summit. Daddy Summit took on social media to announce that he will headline Dreamland’s Pride in Central Park on June 30th. Shortly after the news Daddy Summit reflected on losing hundreds of followers. However, He reiterated his support for the LGBTQ+ community and his stance on playing at a major Pride event.
Pride Keep You Hot and Skinny
One of Chicago’s most prominent artists of this decade, John Summit has taken over the House scene with his DJing and producing skills. With tracks like ‘Human’, ‘Where You Are’ Ft. Hayla, and many more, the artist has accumulated an extremely diverse following. This includes a massive queer fanbase. It is great to see that Summit continues to support a big part of his followers that face scrutiny continuously. Pride is not only a celebration of oneself no matter your denomination, but an act of defiance against hater just like the ones who unfollowed John Summit.
Although he did not touch the subject much deeper, Summit recognized that House music and raving was originated by queer people of color. If you are a raver/festival goer, you better know your history. We are glad Summit will have our back no matter what.
The Miami-based artist follows a roster of various DJs that have continuously shown support to their LGBTQ+ fanbase, such as Diplo, LP Giobbi, The Blessed Madonna, and more. Pride in Central Park Pre-sale tickets sold out, but you can sign up for waitlist for general sale here!

The latest release from Lee Ptolemy is ‘Future Memories’. ‘Future Memories,’ is a 13 track traversal across a broad spectrum of genres, plucking elements from reggae rhythms, Deep House melodies, organic Arab instruments and Afrobeat influences.

GETTING TO KNOW Lee Ptolemy
Introduce yourself and your project
I am a seasoned musician with a passion for electronic sounds who’s been crafting music for over 15 years. However, it was only three years ago that I delved into the realm of electronic music production which would ultimately shape my artistic direction. My releases have often been influenced by existing tracks, offering my own unique interpretation and style. Since then, I’ve made a bold decision to redefine my sound, shifting my focus towards original compositions.
My upcoming album marks a significant departure from any previous work, showcasing a fusion of classic deep house vibes with a touch of the exotic. It draws inspiration from oriental instruments, intricate percussions, and carefully crafted compositions, promising to be a mature and introspective exploration of sound.
Explain what musical genre fits you best
Deep house, Organic house.
Were you connected with music from a young age and did anyone inspire you?
I am from Rotterdam, Netherlands where house music is rooted. At a young age I was inspired by Euromasters and DJ Paul Elstak (Midtown records), and after primary school I would go to the record shop Midtown to browse through the vinyls.
What kickstarted your music career?
I started producing music at a young age, around 20 years ago. I was mostly making Hip-hop beats and somewhat electronic music like drum n bass and hardstyle. I never really published much around those times.
I started to pick up DJ-ing as a hobby a few years ago, but I took a break because I did not have the space nor time. When I did stand back behind the turntables I was getting ideas for producing again in no time. After my first production I had a lot of nice feedback, and also Shazams from locations all over the world. When I realised I was getting recognition from places I never even visited, this gave me a great boost to start creating more.

Tell us more about your sound and how it’s evolved over time
I feel that before I was making tracks, I was more focused on making covers and remixes. Now I am trying to create my own compositions, combined with samples that guide me or inspire me. For me, the biggest challenge was making an album. Releasing an album required a new skill for me, and accepting that a track is a moment, and not a continuous process. It is never properly finished in my head, but the release is planned now.
Any words you want to share to encourage other artists or producers?
Try to produce without ego. I saw caring too much about the public’s opinion killed the experimental part which music really needs. In order for music to evolve, your track might not necessarily be a success, but it might inspire another artists again, which in some way you might get back again. Just throw it out there.
How do you nurture your industry relationships?
I must say poorly at this point. I am at the stage where I am building up relationships and networking still, but I promise whoever is reading this, I do maintain them properly ☺
Is there anyone you’d like to thank that’s been crucial to your journey?
I think everybody close to me has been of great support. I do not talk much about the music and don’t advertise it much. For me it’s just a moment for myself.
Name 3 songs you love and what they mean to you + Youtube links
DakhaBrakha – Svyryd (Bedouin Reworks) – It’s a great set opener. Brilliant piece of rework.

Hooverphonic – Mad About You –  Epic track to test your sound system on purity. Love the ambient part in between.

Frank Sinatra – My way – no explanation needed

What’s your favourite piece of studio equipment or software?
I really love my DJ controller setup. I have Rane Sevety-Two and 2 Rane Twelve which are the perfect combination of old school and new technology. It is more of a battle deck but I just love playing all types of sets on it.
Name your favourite club or festival and how it makes you feel
I used to like the after club which was a club that opens Sunday morning at 5 AM and lasted until 12:00 PM. Perfect to sleep for 20 hours after having some kebab and be in time to go to college again on Mondays.

Music is….. (explain more)
Music is like a magical language that speaks directly to our emotions. It’s made up of sounds, rhythms, and melodies that come together to create something beautiful and meaningful. Think of it as painting with sounds instead of colours.
When artists make music, they’re expressing feelings and ideas in a way that everyone can understand, even if they don’t speak the same language. Listening to music can make us feel happy, sad, excited, or calm—it’s like a soundtrack to our lives; and when we make music ourselves, whether by singing, playing an instrument, or even just tapping along to a beat, we’re connecting with something deep inside us that’s hard to put into words.
Ultimately, music is a powerful force that brings people together and helps us express ourselves in ways we might not be able to otherwise.
One song you really couldn’t live without and why?
“Imagine” by John Lennon.
It’s a timeless classic that resonates with people around the world for its message of peace, unity, and envisioning a better world. Its simple yet profound lyrics inspire listeners to imagine a world without barriers, divisions, or conflict, where humanity lives in harmony and understanding. The song’s universal appeal and enduring relevance make it a staple in popular culture and a source of comfort and hope for many people. Its melody and lyrics have the power to uplift spirits and remind us of the importance of empathy, compassion, and working towards a brighter future for all.

Laurent Garnier: Laurent Garnier’s pioneering work in the French electronic music scene has been a huge inspiration to me. His versatility as a DJ and producer, spanning genres from techno to house to ambient, has shown me the importance of experimentation and pushing boundaries in music.
Carl Cox: Carl Cox’s legendary DJ sets and his commitment to the underground dance music scene have been incredibly influential in my career. His energy behind the decks and his ability to connect with the crowd taught me the importance of creating unforgettable moments on the dance floor.
Booka Shade: Booka Shade’s intricate productions and their seamless fusion of electronic and live instrumentation have always fascinated me. Their album “Movements” is a masterpiece that continues to inspire me to explore new sonic territories and incorporate organic elements into my music.

What was your first music memory and how did it fuel your fire?
When I was a small child I used to really enjoy Michael Jackson and the long videoclips he had with stories in it. I think being very young the visuals came on number 1, and the music second. But I do feel as this developed my interests in music more.
Tell us more about your plans for the future
While I can’t predict the exact direction my career will take, I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and am committed to pursuing my passion for music with determination and enthusiasm. Firstly, there’s this project that’s all about exploring lively and rhythmic styles like ancestral house, riddim, and Afro beats. It’s about tapping into cultural traditions and creating music that gets people moving with infectious rhythms and vibrant energy.
Then, there’s another project that’s a bit darker and harder. These tracks are still in the works, and I’m not sure if I want to release them yet. They’re more experimental and moody, showing a different side of my creativity.
I’m facing a bit of a dilemma because, on one hand, I want to stay true to my artistic instincts and release music that I’m passionate about. But on the other hand, I’m thinking about my audience and whether these new tracks might surprise or even disappoint them.
It’s a common struggle for artists like me, balancing creativity with what our fans expect. I want to keep things fresh and exciting, but I also want to make sure my audience stays engaged and happy with what I’m putting out there.
In the end, whatever decision I make, it’s important for me to stay true to myself as an artist and keep pushing the boundaries of my creativity.
Any worldly advice you’d like to share?
Stay humble and open-minded. There’s always something new to learn and room to grow as an artist, so approach every opportunity with curiosity and a willingness to learn. Next to that, never give up on your dreams. The road to success in the music industry can be challenging and unpredictable, but perseverance and passion will ultimately lead you to where you want to be.
Remember, the most important thing is to create music that speaks to you and touches the hearts of others. Stay authentic, stay inspired, and keep following your dreams.
