MEDUZA, James Hype bring ‘Our House’ concept to Los Angeles

On April 5, MEDUZA and James Hype will bring their famed Our House party to The Torch, Los Angeles. Hosted by Insomniac Events, The Torch is set to bring thousands of attendees to watch two of the biggest DJs in all of house music. The Our House brand revolves around the no-phone policy, where MEDUZA and James Hype urge the attendees to focus on the music and the experience, rather than constantly filming for social media purposes. With a promise to professionally record the set, MEDUZA and James Hype will deliver an electrifying set of four-to-the-floor dance music.
After a successful debut run of the Our House concept in Amsterdam, Chicago, and Washington D.C., the dynamic duo will shift their efforts to the City of Angels. Regulars to many Insomniac Events, MEDUZA and James Hype promise to supply hours of new hits, unreleased IDs, and great production for the Californian crowd. Tickets can still be be purchased here.

Now, back to the destination. The Allure of the Seas is heading to Falmouth in Jamaica. Settled along the shores of the Caribbean Sea, Falmouth will serve as a captivating destination for Groove Cruise Captains. The coastal town is steeped in rich heritage with historic landmarks and museums and offers an array of thrilling activities and attractions including snorkeling, jet skiing, jungle excursions, zip lining, cultural walking tours, horseback riding, ATV tours, river tubing, and more. Although Groove Cruise will not sail to Labadee, Haiti in 2025, Whet Foundation will still continue with a charitable initiative for Second Mile Haiti to provide urgent aid. The organization provides nutritional support to save children’s lives and educate caregivers in order to prevent malnutrition. Due to the current situation in the south of Haiti, supplies have become extremely limited for those in need and Whet Foundation will be collecting donations and monetary aid to support Second Mile to avert life-threatening complications to send to Haiti.

Empire of the Sun Make Triumphant Return With First New Single in 8 Years, "Changes"

It's been nearly eight years since Empire of the Sun, the electropop duo behind "Walking on a Dream," have released a new solo single. But that all changed today after they dropped a euphoric track, "Changes," ushering in the pair's exciting return through ecstatic soundscapes and dreamlike vocals. 
Channeling that same breezy, walk-on-air energy, Empire of the Sun stay true to their signature style while leaping forward into a new chapter. It's an exploratory venture for the hit-making duo, whose storytelling comes alive in "Changes."
"'Changes' was a breakthrough track for us," said Empire of the Sun's Luke Steele. "It felt like the moment of clarity when it became evident we were in the new era, our time of rebirth, the next chapter of Empire."
"'Changes' represents the shifting sands of time, empires rise and fall but the sun shall shine on," added Nick Littlemore. "Come once more into the world we’ve created, delve deeper within and be rewarded with its ever-expanding story, each and every one is invited to explore the new era."
The track is accompanied by a stunning music video, which was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Michael Maxxis over three weeks in Thailand. Maxxis worked closely with the band to discern the direction and aesthetic of the video, according to a press release.

Giolì & Assia Will Perform Across the Globe for Fall 2024 Tour, "RESURRECTION"

Giolì & Assia, whose distinctive fusion of sultry percussion and worldly live vocals has placed them into a creative league of their own, have announced a new tour.
The EDM.com Class of 2021 duo announced "RESURRECTION," which will take them across the globe from September to November 2024. The international tour will celebrate their upcoming EP, due to release later this month.
Kicking off with North American shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and more, the tour will then take Giolì & Assia to London, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin, among other major cities.
"We're incredibly excited to announce the 'RESURRECTION' World Tour and share our new music with fans worldwide," the pair said in a press release. "After a period of reflection and creative exploration, we're ready to come back stronger than ever and connect with you all in a whole new way. Nothing compares to that feeling of playing our music live and we can’t wait to be back with you all soon."

Gorgon City Announce New Album Reverie, Release Single ‘All That You Need’

After a world-conquering 2023, UK Electronic duo Gorgon City continue their next chapter by announcing their fifth studio album Reverie with the new single ‘All That You Need’ featuring Caroline Byrne, out now on their own REALM Records. Following the release of lead single ‘Biggest Regret (with Bbyafricka)’ at the beginning of the year and the club-ready ‘You Know It’ last month, the anthemic ‘All That You Need’ is another sign of things to come from Gorgon City’s upcoming summer LP, with a filthy bassline, bouncing synth toplines and distorted vocal melodies that instantly ingrain themselves into your memory. Creative Tips From Kelly Badak, the Artist Translating Real-Life Rave Imagery Into Graphic Design

For Kelly Badak, the primal beats and retina-searing lasers of raves are more than just a backdrop for partying. They are the raw material fueling her creative process.
Armed with a vast mental sketchbook unrestricted by spiral binding, Badak is a graphic designer translating the palpitating energy around her into digital brushstrokes for clients. She has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, where she unearths rare fonts that harken back to DIY punk and rave posters of yesteryear—a lost art after the advent of the digital era.
After moving from Miami to The Big Apple three years ago, Badak enrolled in the Tribeca-based New York Law School, where she's studying IP and trademark law. Ahead of her graduation in May, she's studying for the grueling New York State bar exam and managing the balancing act of driving the business of her own creative design agency.
It's a familiar struggle for many in her field. Client revisions, creative roadblocks and the gnawing pressure to deliver fresh ideas can leave even the most passionate designer feeling deflated. But for Badak, the frenetic energy of a rave is her antidote. 
Back in her home studio, the afterglow of the rave galvanizes her creativity. The faces, a mosaic of unfiltered joy, become the bedrock for her next project's mood board and kaleidoscopic visuals become a mesmerizing flow chart in her mind's eye.
Badak traces her love of dance music back to 2013, when she watched Avicii and Hardwell tear up the stages of Ultra Music Festival in performances now considered iconic. Over a decade later, she prefers the ferocious, industrial sound of techno music, which she finds "soothing" while she works because it facilitates a full-blown descent into a stream of consciousness without the distraction of lyricism.

A lot of her work, she says, is inspired by the visuals she sees at shows. A performance by South African dance music icon Black Coffee was a particular touchstone, his sultry rhythms weaving a latticework with live visuals in ways she'd never seen. The same goes for a show headlined by the renowned Amê duo, whose visuals featured a spinning chrome ball that now serves as a wellspring for her own aesthetic.
Badak isn't just replicating what she sees—she's attempting to capture the uninhibited movement and shared euphoria we all feel at raves but can't quite explain to our families at Thanksgiving dinner. And in that sense, her work is a testament to the transformative power of rave culture, a chrome-plated bridge between the unrestrained domain of electronic dance music and the structured world of graphic design.
We caught up with Badak to peer through the looking glass of her creative process. In her own words, here are some creative tips for graphic designers to find inspiration in their work from the weird and wonderful world of electronic music.
Immerse yourself within the atmosphere
Next time you're at a rave, try to study the visual effects and lighting and notice how it connects and matches with the music. Lighting designers and VJs inspire me so much.
Appreciate the visuals
There's nothing wrong with recording at a show for the sake of the beauty of the moment. I record mainly for the visuals to draw inspiration from later on when I'm working on my art.
Try to recreate one visual as practice from a show you attend
Really, the best way to improve your work is to practice. By recreating an artwork, with the addition of your own personal touch, you'll be able to really hone the skills you already possess and gain an understanding of the original artist's thought process.
Practice by creating visual narratives
Every track tells a story to evoke a certain emotion from its listeners. Try to come up with a design that complements a song you enjoy listening to by translating the emotions you feel into your artwork.
Appreciate the sub-genres of EDM
Whether it's industrial techno, trance, gabber, hardstyle or house, understanding the differences will help you design artwork more effectively for events regarding that specific genre. Pay attention to frequent color schemes, motifs and recurring imagery in the music's artwork.

Gather inspiration from event flyers
Take notice of their use of fonts, color, imagery and overall tone of the artwork and how it aligns with the genre of music it's promoting. There are tons of websites with archived rave flyers from the 90s that I use to influence my work. 
Stay in tune with trends
Keep up with relevant blogs, social media accounts and other artists to stay informed about rising trends in the works and visual artworks of DJs. I like to attend shows regularly to observe how both DJs and their visual artists are improving and upgrading their work.
Stay true to your own style
It's important to be innovative in the work you produce, and it's equally as important to stay authentic to the energy that the music emanates. Try to avoid clichés and trite artwork elements, and aim to create artwork that resonates with its intended audience with the addition of your own personal flair.

Coachella to Livestream 6 Stages in 2024

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is opening its doors to the world via YouTube live stream. Goldenvoice just announced that both weekends of Coachella 2024 (April 12-14 and April 19-21) will be fully livestreamed on YouTube for anyone to watch from home.

Watch Kasablanca Debut Poignant New Track, "Remission" at Ultra Amid Cancer Treatment

Micky Kasablanca's life changed in early-2024, when he was suddenly diagnosed with cancer.
After his diagnosis and an emergency surgery, the Kasablanca duo adjusted their touring plans while Micky battled the cancer by undergoing aggressive chemotherapy regimen. At the end of February, he shared news of his completed treatment on social media but noted he still had a "long road to recovery as I wait for news of remission."
A scheduled performance at the iconic Ultra Music Festival served as a light at the end of the tunnel for Micky during his treatments, he said. He reached his destination last month, taking the stage for a riveting performance and delivering one of the festival's more poignant moments.
"While I was going through [treatment], I knew that when I was done, I would get to come here and play Ultra Miami with you guys and I can't tell you how happy I am that I made it here today," Micky said onstage. "I don't have a clean bill of health yet. I'm hoping to get that in two weeks, but we decided to call this song 'Remission' in hopes that I'm going to get it."
"F*** cancer!" a fan screamed in the crowd.

The Disco Biscuits Unveil Enthralling 9th Studio Album – ‘Revolution In Motion’

Legendary electronic jam band The Disco Biscuits recently unveiled their ninth studio album, a space saga titled “Revolution in Motion,” just in time for their upcoming performance at Texas Eclipse. Produced by Derek VanScoten, also known as Cloudchord, the album comprises 14 tracks and has been unveiled in four parts, each accompanied by 3D animated films in a comic book style created by Blunt Action and published on the band’s YouTube page.
The album narrates a fascinating tale of extraterrestrial beings descending upon New York City to freeze and abduct humans for study, only to encounter unexpected resistance from none other than The Disco Biscuits. As the story unfolds, the band accompanies the alien misfits back to their home planet, showcasing the transformative power of music to their Queen in hopes of quelling unrest among their people. All 14 tracks on the album have been performed live and refined over the past two years, with many becoming staples of the band’s performances and serving as platforms for improvisational exploration. The concept for the space opera was conceived by Jon Barber and his collaborator Joey Friedman in August 2021, with songwriting commencing in early 2022 alongside Aron Magner.
All in all, ‘Revolution In Motion’ lives up to the hype and is yet another impressive releases from such legendary force in the electronic music scene.

$50 Tickets and Melting Vinyl: A Look Back at the First Coachella Festival In 1999

Ah, Coachella. The only place where you can pay $10 for a bottle of water and still feel like you're getting a good deal.
Believe it or not, Coachella wasn't always a giant Instagram filter. Before it was the marketing metropolis it is today, it was a rough-and-tumble romp in the desert on October 9th and 10th, 1999. Devoid of helicopter Uber riders and Walmart yodelers, Coachella's humble beginnings are crucial to its legacy as a pioneer in the festival space.
Coachella now annually rakes in well over $100 million in revenue. And its impact on the local economy is even larger, with last year's festival providing a $400 million boon.
But it wasn't always the golden goose of Goldenvoice. After the inaugural Coachella in '99, its organizers crumbled under the weight of the pitfalls of running a first-year festival. They lost roughly a million dollars that year, nearly bankrupting the company.
Heavy is the head that wears the flower crown.
"To break a brand-new festival sixty days away is financial suicide," Paul Tollett, Coachella's co-founder, told The New Yorker in 2017. "But we didn’t know that."

Today's Coachella tickets start at $549 before fees and VIP passes will ding you $1,049. How much were tickets back in '99, you ask? A meager $50, less than 10% of today's cost.
In 2023, that will buy you chicken tenders and an oat-milk latte.
In retrospect, it was nothing short of highway robbery to pay $50 for a festival headlined by Beck, Rage Against the Machine and Tool. Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction, who co-founded the iconic Lollapalooza festival eight years prior, played a solo set on opening day.
Electronic music was a lynchpin of Coachella from the outset. The Chemical Brothers, Moby, Fatboy Slim, A-Trak, Underworld, Thievery Corporation and Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra were just a few to appear in '99.

Before it became a dance sanctuary for EDM fans at Coachella, the Sahara Tent started out as a techno tinderbox. The first-ever Sahara lineup featured pioneering artists Richie Hawtin, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, among others, who set the stage for many totemic performances in their wake.
Who could forget Daft Punk's legendary pyramid show of 2006?
While early techno music walloped Sahara, Amon Tobin, Nightmares on Wax, Kid Koala and more performed over at the Gobi Tent. But the structure couldn't protect them from the blistering desert heat.
The sun at the Empire Polo Club was vicious, beating down on the dust bowl with a 100-plus-degree fist. At one point, Koala said, his vinyl began to melt.
And so did Coachella's prospects. After taking a loss in '99, Tollett planned for a turn-of-the-century rebound in October 2000. He ultimately canceled, however, and instead partnered with Pasquale Rotella to produce Nocturnal Wonderland at the Empire Polo Club in September, strengthening its EDM bonds.
The rest, as they say, is history.

This Kickstarter is Launching a Versatile Electronic Music Production Station for Kids

Don't be surprised when your toddler gets signed before you.
Playtime Engineering has launched a Kickstarter campaign for their upcoming device, myTRACKS. Designed for their line of Blipblox synthesizers to be somewhere between a toy and a music production suite, the instrument is built to help children begin to explore the world of electronic music production in a way that's accessible to them.
You might be surprised to hear just how many features are packed into this unassuming device. Despite a colorful paint job that makes it look like a Fisher-Price toy, the product page says that myTRACKS has a built-in microphone and speakers, polychromatic backlit hit pads and a MIDI-out port so it can be connected elsewhere. The instrument is also battery-operated so kids can create from anywhere they'd like. 
In terms of the music production tools, there are close to 50 customizable instruments, including effects like filters, delay and pitch bend. Users can also harness recording capabilities that allow them to record and edit or loop their sounds.

Cosmic Gate & Christian Burns – Brave + US Tour dates

Bathed in the moodsome blue light of the titan Ahoy arena, in the opening minutes of their ASOT 2024 set, Cosmic Gate premiered their new single. The response ‘Brave’ received from the tens of thousands gathered in Rotterdam was greater than even the duo dared hope. 

‘Brave’ represents the first material, post ‘MOSAIIK – Chapters One & Two’ – the twin albums that definitively reset Cosmic Gate’s sonic to something “deeper, more progressive and song-led”. The music that followed was only going to advance that ethic further. The single sees Cosmic Gate in a first-time collaboration with multi-award winning singer/songwriter Christian Burns, but as the three acknowledge, ‘Brave’s creation was not without its own challenges.
“Working on something together has been on the cards for quite some time”, says Christian. “It was never about doing a track … but doing the right one though.” “The moment we heard Christian’s ‘Brave’ demo, we knew we’d found the one”, comments Bossi. “The song has a unique atmosphere and, production-wise, I think we knew what we were going to do with it before we’d finished our first listen!” adds Nic.

Solemn and haunting in places, mesmerizing in others, ‘Brave’s powerful draw-you-in nature has a once heard/never forgotten quality. Carried by Christian Burn’s lingering, ethereal delivery, its words convey an equally compelling message. It meditates on the courage needed to dig deep and find enough heart to fight the good fight – whatever form it might take. Cosmic Gate tint ‘Brave’s production with chunky, tribal drums, throbbing bass, haunting horns, lament-laced piano and no end of FX texture.

Privilege Ibiza Being Torn Down

The historical remains of Ibiza’s superclub Privilege, once known as one of the largest nightclubs in the world as titled by the Guinness World Records, is officially coming down. Photos of the deconstruction of the famous nightclub have begun to surface, when only months earlier the venue received over 8.2m euros for renovations. We suspect that a new structure will be built in its place using those funds.
Known for hosting events that filled its floors with over 10,000 ravers and club-goers alike, the once prestigious nightclub began on a downhill course after an unfortunate closure in 2018. Due to an inspection that uncovered illegal capacity increasing modifications, the club was forced to shut its doors. 
A year later, Privilege Ibiza made its return, although various sections of the venue remained closed off due to conditions that were deemed unsafe. However, when the pandemic set its grasp on the world in 2020, the club once again shut its doors, leading to its ultimate demise. 
Many have hoped that the venue would see successful return in the White Isle, even after the property was bought by the hospitality group Grupo Empresas Matutes. In 2023, the venue was even awarded over €8.2 million from the local Ibiza government to renovate, leading to rumors of a possible reopening in 2025. However, the venue has continued to lay in wait and deteriorate in the process due to lack of maintenance. It’s clear now that the Privilege Ibiza we knew is gone, but we are hopeful that something newer, bigger, and better will go up in its place.
