[Interview] Blasterjaxx Duo Share An Exclusive Introspective On Their Musical Journey

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with the Dutch duo Blasterjaxx. The superstars released an absolute banger ‘16’ with Hardwell & Maddix earlier this month. Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf, hailing from The Hague, have been part of the pioneering days of Big Room. The Blasterjaxx duo have released numerous hit singles and collaborated with renowned artists in the EDM scene, such as Hardwell, David Guetta, Tiësto, Afrojack, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. You would recognize their tunes ‘Purpose’, ‘Tarzan,’ ‘Narco,’ and ‘Superman’ to name a few.
We’ve gone all in from their journey into depths of their story with the genre, ways of production, ‘16’ itself, and much more! Without further ado let’s dive into the interview.

Thanks for doing this with us guys, we love your music here at EDMTunes. How was the production of ‘16’ for you two? Especially working with Maddix & Hardwell, could you dive into how the collaboration was for the both of you with them?
Well, it all kicked off on a casual Tuesday brainstorm session, pondering over which old classic to remix. Eventually, we settled on Ard Und Jorn’s “16” – there was just this wave of nostalgia that hit us whenever we spun that track, so it was a no-brainer. After a few days of tinkering away at it, we decided it needed that extra techno flair, and who better to bring that than Maddix?
Now, Maddix wasn’t just any collaborator for us. We had a blast working together on our first Collab, ‘Purpose,’ back in 2022, so it felt like the natural move to team up again. Hardwell caught wind of the track and a month later, he was willing to throw down his own spin on it.
And the rest, as they say, is history. We’re absolutely thrilled with how everything came together, and we’re itching to drop this banger at every show. Hard work, collaboration, and a sprinkle of serendipity – that’s the recipe for success, my friend.
You both have been around for awhile now, what has been your favourite festival to play at so far? And what would be a dream venue/festival you’d like to play at?
Picking a favourite club or festival is like trying to choose your favourite song, impossible! Each one has its own unique vibe and energy, you know? Now, if we’re talking dream venues/festivals we haven’t hit up yet? There’s a couple that come to mind. Untold Festival in Romania and Coachella would be right up there on our list. Just imagining the energy of those crowds gets us hyped !
How did you guys get into electronic music, what was the moment you guys knew that you were ready to be Blasterjaxx?
Back in 2010, we kicked off our journey by diving headfirst into the world of Latin House music. But then 2011 came around, and suddenly EDM was the voice of the world. We took all those Latin influences and threw them into the mix, birthing what would eventually be known as “Big Room.” Crazy to think that back then, the term “Big Room” wasn’t even on the radar – we were just having a blast experimenting with different sounds. And who would’ve guessed? Our little experiment turned into one of the hottest sounds of that time.
How does your creative process work for you two as the Blasterjaxx duo? Any secrets that you’d like to share that makes your process of production seamless?
To be honest, I believe we’re incredibly lucky we have found each other. We complement each other perfectly, and the chemistry between us is fantastic. This dynamic extends seamlessly into the studio. Whenever Idir needed feedback, Thom was able to provide exactly what he needed. Our ideas aligned seamlessly.
What genre of music do you draw inspiration from? If we opened both your streaming service of choice (Spotify/Apple Music etc) what would be your last listened to track?
In every song we create, we strive to blend different influences together as much as possible. We believe it’s this fusion of styles that makes our duo so strong.

Kygo Announces 2024 World Tour Across North America And Europe

Today, global superstar, producer, and DJ Kygo announced part one of his 2024 world tour across North America, Europe, and the UK. Produced by Live Nation, the 26-date run kicks off on Saturday, September 7th in Commerce City, CO at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park. He will then make stops in Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, London, and more before wrapping up on Friday, December 13th in Dublin, Ireland at 3Arena. As the highest-selling ticket artist in dance music, part one of Kygo’s 2024 dates marks his first tour since 2018 and will bring his incredible live show across the globe. Anjuna Labels to Donate "Planet-Inspired" Earth Day Mix Royalties to Ocean Conservation Trust

Above & Beyond's record labels are giving back to Mother Nature in honor of this year's Earth Day.
Anjunadeep, Anjunabeats and Reflections have each gathered over 20 tracks from their artists and compiled them into a trio of new mixes to celebrate Earth Day. Each song either samples or is inspired by biomusic comprising real, organic sounds of our planet. Featured in the mixes are Anjuna regulars like Above & Beyond, Arty, Gabriel & Dresden, Yotto, Luttrell, Eli & Fur and many more.
As royalties from the Earth Day 2024 compilations are collected, the three labels and its artists will donate them to the Ocean Conservation Trust to support the environmental advocacy nonprofit's efforts to protect our oceans. The funds will be remitted in perpetuity, according to a press release shared with EDM.com.
"We envision a future where all of us are more mindful of the environmental impact of our actions to mitigate this effect wherever possible—and adjust our actions to reduce those impacts," the group said in a statement. "On our part, we want to continue to run our business—creating community and life-affirming experiences through music, as well as supporting the livelihood of our artists and employees - but with an increased focus on lowered emissions, waste reduction, resource conservation, and improved procurement and sourcing."

Inaugural Coachella Day Party Series, Goldenvoice Surf Club Makes Waves

It's springtime in the Coachella Valley, which means just about everywhere you look there's a pool party brimming with 20-somethings sipping on mojitos while deep house echoes from the speakers to the desert sky. 
Bearing that in mind, when Goldenvoice announced another Coachella-centered pool event, the four-day spectacle seemed excessive for the saturated market. Even with a roster of top-tier electronic tastemakers, the Goldenvoice Surf Club had to elevate and execute its amenities to stand out from the crowd. And they did.
Having been gifted the honor of hosting their soiree at the infrequently-used Palm Springs Surf Club, Goldenvoice took full advantage of the built-in infrastructure to create a one-of-a-kind experience for dance music lovers.

Once a former water park, the grounds at the Palm Springs Surf Club included accommodations not found at your run-of-the-mill desert pool party. From water slides, a meandering lazy river, a swimming pool and a massive surfing wave pool, these accessible water play areas added a level of amusement that blended perfectly with the house music blasting from the amplifiers.

Promoters also included an early morning wellness package for those wanting a more relaxing start to their day. Sound baths, yoga, HIIT training and guided meditation were just a few of the health-focused activities available to guests.

As for daily programming, the talent performing across both weekends included a who's who of stars from across the electronic music spectrum. Spread across two distinct stages, the main stage was situated alongside a picturesque grassy amphitheater, while the Beatport Next stage featured rising acts in an indoor setting. 
Notable performances from all four days include Mary Droppinz, Barry Can't Swim, Bicep, Mall Grab b2b Skin On Skin, Skream and Juliet Mendoza.

In the end, Goldenvoice prevailed as it took full advantage of the amenities provided by the Palm Springs Surf Club. The unique setting allowed for a more jovial tone to take place amongst the many aquatic features scattered throughout the property.

Kygo Announces 2024 World Tour

Kygo is getting ready to hit the road for a world tour, his first in six years.
The Norwegian dance music superstar will soon take his live show across North America and Europe for his eponymous "Kygo World Tour." The performance will feature "Kygo's signature piano, as well as strings, singers and drummers," according to a press release.
Joining him on his international romp are special guests Gryffin, SOFI TUKKER, Sam Feldt, Zara Larsson, Klangkarussell, Hayla, Victoria Nadine and Vandelux. They will take on a plethora of major arenas and amphitheaters, like The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam and O2 in London. For fans who don't see their city on the initial rollout, it's worth noting that the tour's official flier reads "Part 1" so it's safe to expect more dates in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, it's set to kick off on September 7th, 2024 at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. Pre-sale tickets will be available on April 24th at 10am local time here.

Marshmello Announces New Riddim EP

The steady stream of new Marshmello music isn't over. 
The masked, chart-topping producer has stormed into 2024 with several bass-forward singles, staying especially attuned to his bass music roots in recent times. Based on his latest comments on social media, Marshmello is telling fans there's certainly more where that came from.
"Riddim ep coming very soon btw," he posted on X. "Maybe next week if you ask nicely."
The news follows Mello's recent release of Mellodeath Tapes Vol. 1, the producer's collaborative EP with SVDDEN DEATH. Despite the ominous nature of their music, the two have been sharing seemingly swell times on the road with high-profile pop-up sets in Minnesota at the famed Mall of America and in Chicago atop the local landmark restaurant, The Wieners Circle.
Marshmello's upcoming riddim EP may be his next focus, but there's no shortage of new tunes he's been workshopping. That includes a trap single alongside EDM.com Class of 2024 inductee Hamdi, which dropped on the Do LaB stage over the weekend at Coachella.

Michael Bibi Mounts Triumphant Return to the Stage at Coachella: "There Was Just a Huge Range of Emotions"

After a tumultuous year marred by a battle with cancer, Michael Bibi's return to the stage at Coachella 2024 was a celebration of life, music and resilience. 
The influential DJ and house music producer, who in 2023 faced a rare form of brain and spinal cancer, graced the stage with a set that encapsulated more than just his raw skills on the decks. It was a profound emotional journey shared with thousands of adoring fans.
Nearly a year ago, Bibi received a daunting prognosis, casting shadows over his career. However, his surprise performance in Ibiza during a break in his cancer treatment hinted at his unwavering spirit. By December he shared heartening news of his remission, a sign of hope not just for him, but also his fans worldwide.
Before taking to Coachella's new Quasar stage, he reflected, "One year ago I was given a 30% chance of survival, today I'm packing to perform at Coachella... Never give up on your hopes or dreams."
Bibi was joined onstage by his mother, who was simultaneously experiencing her first music festival with her son. The emotional weight of the performance was palpable, Bibi said.
"It was emotional, it was intense—there was happiness, there was some sadness," he told BBC's Newsbeat. "And there was just a huge range of emotions coming through."

Bibi’s journey to Coachella was his first long-distance travel since his treatment, signifying a major step in his recovery.
"That was a big step in itself, just getting on a plane and coming to the US," he added. "And then adding on top of that, doing my first show and coming to a festival, it was a lot."
"But it actually gives you a sense of purpose again, moving and coming back out into reality and seeing people. Because I've been kind of sheltering a lot, because of the treatments, I've had to kind of isolate myself. So getting back out into the world and connecting with human beings is a good feeling."

Watch DJ Snake and 50 Cent Perform "In Da Club" Together at Coachella

DJ Snake threw a curveball at this year's Coachella, striking a chord with festival-goers by bringing out hip-hop icon 50 Cent in a groundbreaking set that bridged electronic dance music with old-school hip-hop. 
Euphoria swept through the crowd as 50 Cent performed 2003's "In Da Club," a track that has become synonymous with hip-hop excellence over its 20-year reign. The energy surged as they followed up with "P.I.M.P," turning the festival atmosphere at the Sahara tent into a block party of epic proportions. 
Elsewhere on the festival's grounds, Snake popped up to surprise fans with a dedicated hip-hop set at the Do LaB stage. He certainly made the most of his two weekends at the Indio-based festival as his high-energy Weekend 2 set followed up a star-studded outing the weekend prior, which saw the "Turn Down For What" producer bringing special guests Peso Pluma, Robin S. and Kodak Black to the stage.

At the IbizaVinylClub, the belief is that vinyl music is an art form that transcends age, experience, and boundaries. The community embraces vinyl enthusiasts from all walks of life, fostering an in-clusive environment which actively involves like-minded people at their popular VinylExchange events; and has a constantly expanding network of vinyl junkies and wax enthusiasts who share the same passion on the island.
The real pull of the IVC is their interactive events, where guests and members can get involved on Opendecks, the VinylExchange & sale and the AudioPoint. These hands-on experiences allow attendees to engage with vinyl music tangibly and memorably. Each event also sees performances from the island’s most revered vinyl DJs, including long time Ibiza heads such as Ken Fan, David Phillips, Joan Ribas, Andy Baxter, Pete Gooding, Jo Mills, Karlos Sense and DJane Tsunami to name just a few.
Thus far over 140 vinyl DJs have graced the IVC decks at more than 100 IVC events which have taken place at over 40 of Ibiza’s favourite music spots… including the legendary Café del Mar, Las Dalias, Ibiza Rocks Bar and Pikes Ibiza.
Looking to 2024, the IbizaVinylClub has exciting plans in store. Indira Paganotto to curate the club room at Amnesia Ibiza for Metamorfosi 

Indira Paganotto is set to return to Amnesia Ibiza this summer and take over curation of The Club Room as part of Joseph Capriati’s Metamorfosi residency. Metamorfosi opens on 19th July and closes on 6th September so promises eight unmissable Fridays of high-class musical action in the world’s most celebrated club.
Paganotto is one of the hottest stars in the contemporary scene. The Spanish artist has a potent sound and plenty of technical skill as a DJ and has played every major club and festival in the world in the last 12 months while also dropping music on Charlotte de Witte’s KNTXT, Nina Kraviz’s Trip and her own Artcore. Having just released an official remix for Depeche Mode, Indira is scheduled to play Movement Detroit, Tomorrowland Main Stage, EDC Las Vegas, and plenty of others this summer.
She has impeccable taste that takes in many sub-styles from 90s disco to the most current underground techno. After the success of last year’s three-week residency, the ‘Psymama’ will be inviting a range of carefully curated guests to play alongside her each week at Amnesia this summer.

Watch RÜFÜS DU SOL Coachella Groundbreaking 3+ Hour DJ Set

Picture this: sunset at Coachella on the brand new Quasar stage. What’s better? Well, maybe the fact that Australian electronic trio RÜFÜS DU SOL took the decks for an unprecedented 3+ hour DJ set.
Once you get there, you are immediately struck by the massive LED panels that make up the performance area. The striking futuristic design radiated an almost extraterrestrial energy. As RÜFÜS took their place behind the towering DJ booth, those panels blinked to life with abstract, ever-evolving geometric visualizations. We were about to embark on a true audiovisual journey.
The opening warm-up saw the group ease us in with understated, atmospheric soundscapes zoning in on a hypnotic, rolling groove. Melodic synth pads ebbed and flowed as RÜFÜS effortlessly blended new unreleased tracks with deeper cult cuts from respected underground imprints. The visual accompaniment matched the vibe – hazy, colored clouds and fractalized natural scenery pulsated organically.

Slowly but surely, the intensity was ratcheted up. Acapella vocals from the group’s anthemic hits like “Underwater” were deftly weaved in between punchy, driving kick drums. The visuals shifted too, morphing into hyper-realistic urban environments that disintegrated into otherworldly alien landscapes. We were being transported to another realm.
As the night reached a feverish climax in the set’s final lush third, RÜFÜS kicked up the energy into an irresistible techno frenzy. Remixes from scene heavyweights like Adriatique got funky reworks, while the iconic “The Runner” by Foals got a thunderous club edit. Laser rave sticks danced feverishly as the crowd moved as one pulsating organism.
Watching RÜFÜS seamlessly flow between underground house, techno, melodic grooves and more was a true clinic in technical wizardry and creative versatility. But it was the fully immersive, symbiotic audiovisual experience that left me in awe. The Quasar stage’s visuals were as much a “performer” as the three artists themselves, transcending standard concert visuals.
As the final thumping kicks faded and RÜFÜS raised their arms in triumph, the human ocean roared its approval. We had all just witnessed a historic, boundary-pushing statement that raised the bar for what a DJ “performance” can be.
