Coming off a record-breaking world tour in support of his previous album, during which he sold out all dates months in advance, Ben Böhmer made a point to take time to himself and return to the space that compels him the most: his studio. It’s there that he’s able to truly channel his passion for spontaneous creativity and relentlessly focus on honing a craft that allows him to express deep, complex feelings. He tackled grief on his breakthrough debut album, Breathing, and separation on its follow-up, 2021’s Begin Again.
Bloom is a reset, a confident reassertion of his own desires and more improvisational origins. In Bloom, we hear and feel Ben’s growth, the joyful pursuit of newness that pulls him back to the studio day after day, season after season. Moreover, Ben embraces his imperfect journey thus far on the forthcoming album’s first single, ”Best Life,’ featuring Berlin-based singer-songwriter duo JONAH.
Sonically, ‘Best Life’ is a bold step in a new direction for Böhmer, who is intent on growing out of the pre-fabricated boxes he’s been placed in. Böhmer’s songwriting and composing talents extend to the foreground on Bloom alongside revered artists like indie royalty Lykke Li, alt-pop duo Oh Wonder, Enfant Sauvage (of the French duo The Blaze), and more. The album features a swathe of styles and tempos that earlier tracks in his career feel like breadcrumbs to.

Amidst the glitz and glamour of Vegas' world-class clubbing sector, a new contender is emerging with a raw, warehouse-inspired experience: Substance. Opening its doors in July 2024, the venue promises a big lineup of electronic music artists, kicking off with an opening night appearance by Walker & Royce.

Since reuniting in 2019 after a five-year hiatus, Swedish House Mafia have been meticulously plotting their comeback – but the rollout for their new single “Lioness” has been anything but calculated.
The full story: one year ago
The legendary dance trio of Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello first started teasing the track last autumn during their wildly popular Ibiza residency. They continued dropping teasers into early 2024, whipping fans into a frenzy for their first new original music in over a year.
But promised release dates have come and gone as the Swedish DJs tinkered behind the scenes. After premiering an early version of “Lioness” at a homecoming show in Brooklyn in late April, they announced the song wouldn’t be released as planned because the “production” needed “last-minute changes.”
The mixed messages spawned conspiracy theories and social media backlash from impatient fans. “This whole Lioness thing has become a Monty Python sketch,” one supporter vented on Reddit. “We learned not to trust them even if they officially announce a date,” added another.
It’s an uncharacteristic misstep for the meticulously strategic Swedish House Mafia, whose 20-year rise from the underground to arena headliners was fueled by carefully plotted hype campaigns.
Swedish House Mafia “Lioness” What will happen with the Swedish House Mafia in the next future?
But those heady days of Don’t You Worry Child and Save The World may feel like ancient history if they can’t recapture that spark on “Lioness.”
The song, which features Swedish indie-pop duo Niki & The Dove, aims to blend Swedish House Mafia’s bombastic energy with more ethereal melodies. It’s their first release since 2023’s low-key “Ray of Solar.”
Swedish House Mafia have now confirmed “Lioness” will arrive tomorrow, June 7th – a year after they first started sharing clips.
But this messy prelude shows the rebuild process hasn’t always been smooth. Were the delays simply part of an intricate roll-out strategy or a worrying lack of quality control? And can they win over the fickle festival crowd so easily in 2024 after a shaky return to the spotlight?
Swedish House Mafia’s legacy was built on euphoric moments, both in the studio and on the stage. Hitting those heights again may prove their biggest challenge yet.

Last year they soared like pterodactyls. This year they're digging for fossils.
After the recent reveal of the 2024 Lost Lands lineup, its organizers have returned with news of a major logistical upgrade, a permanent solution for attendees to safely navigate from the festival to the campgrounds.
We've been reporting on how much Lost Lands has grown and improved since its debut in 2017. Since finding their home at Legend Valley, Excision and his team have expanded the festival via new stages, production and walkways, but the highway separating the venue and its campgrounds has always presented a vexing challenge.
Organizers in 2023 helped ease the flow of foot traffic by constructing a large bridge over the highway, which eliminated the need to wait for police to stop cars from traveling down the busy road. They're now constructing a tunnel underneath the highway that will connect Lost Lands' venue and campgrounds without the need for stairs, so all can travel freely between the two areas without impeding traffic.
The new tunnel is currently under construction, according to Lost Lands, and should be ready before this year's outing. You can read the official announcement below.
The next Lost Lands festival will take place September 20-22 at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio. Tickets are on sale now.

Let’s go back to 2011, thirteen years ago today. On this day, the “Pioneer of Dubstep,” would put dubstep on the map by releasing his award-winning track, ‘First of the Year (Equinox)’. The person I’m referring to is none other than nine-time Grammy winner, DJ and producer, Skrillex.
‘First of the Year (Equinox)’ was the first track on the dubstep prodigy’s third EP, ‘More Monsters & Sprites’. With a reggae vibe for the intro, it quickly shifts into an abyss of darkness with the heavy coils and breaks that Skrillex is now known for.
The track peaked on charts worldwide, notably reaching #7 in Belgium and #85 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The music video, which explains the inclusion of “Call 911 now!” in the song, received nominations for both Best Short Form Music Video at the 54th Grammy Awards and Best Electronic Dance Music Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. It ultimately won MTV’s VMA for Best Visual Effects in a Video in 2012.
Why is ‘Equinox’ in the title?
If you’ve ever wondered, “What does ‘Equinox’ in parentheses mean?” wonder no more. ‘(Equinox)’ is actually an old demo track that Skrillex recorded and later incorporated into the song with some adjustments. In a way, he’s paying homage to his earlier work.

The world in the age of AI continues to feel like trial and error visions of the future. Melodic Bass artist ILLENIUM is learning that the hard way right about now. In simple words, The Illinois native received harsh critiques from fans, as he used an AI poster to announce his upcoming show dates in San Francisco. Nevertheless, the DJ decided to explain the stylistic choice and promised new artwork.
AI Poster
The now-deleted poster has some noticeable features that many fans disliked. Furthermore, ILLENIUM blames his management for having bad taste and choosing the AI version for the final poster, claiming that the team still worked with a paid designer. However, the fans didn’t buy his apology and tore him up a little.
Nevertheless, San Francisco is stoked to have ILLENIUM play two weekends. The ‘Good Things Fall Apart‘ creator will grace the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium July 19-20 and July 26-27. Next time we will have a nicer poster.

This record housed classics like ‘Crawl Outta Love‘, ‘Fractures‘, and the feel-good anthem ‘Feel Good‘ with Gryffin and Daya. Critically acclaimed and a runaway success, ‘Awake‘ topped the iTunes Top Electronic Albums Chart in a dozen countries, its melodies echoing with over 100 million streams.
2019 saw the release of Ascend, ILLENIUM’s third full-length masterpiece and his major label debut. This sonic tapestry became one of the year’s biggest electronic releases, with a collective billion streams washing over the world. As a result, the album climbed to the top of Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Moreover, it secured a coveted Top 20 spot on the Billboard 200.

After a long time in the techno scene, Balthazar & JackRock are known for their unique sounds and creative sets. They have been released on a number of well-known labels.
The beginning of “In The Dark” has dark beats and bright sounds that bring light.
The rough pads and twitchy sounds in the background make this another catchy club cut.
Then ‘Better‘ comes in strong with slamming kick drums, rumbling bass, and evocative and celestial synths.
‘In The Machine‘ ends with an acid touch and a linear tech drum that locks you in while weird voices and pulsating trance synths race on beneath a hypnotic bassline and voice hook.
These are three mesmerizing cuts from Balthazar & JackRock. They are all out on KNTXT‘s sub-label RPM.

Berklee College of Music and the Audio Engineering Society (AES) will present the first-ever AES International Symposium on AI and the Musician, a two-day forum that will bring together artists, producers, engineers, educators, legal experts, and developers to explore the most relevant issues related to the use of artificial intelligence in music. The Symposium will take place from June 6-8 at various locations on Berklee’s campus in Boston.
The inaugural event seeks to foster an exchange of ideas that incorporates perspectives on AI from the music, technical, and business communities, with sessions touching on a comprehensive mix of topics including intellectual property rights, recent advancements in AI tools for music production, the implementation of AI in arts education, composer-centric AI music generation in studio and performance settings, and ethical challenges posed by AI to musicians and sound artists. The program will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, presentations of submitted compositions, and interactive demonstrations of the latest technology.
“The core motivation for this Symposium draws from a long relationship with music making and music production where technology serves to augment expressive possibilities and the creative process,” said Jonathan Wyner, event organizer and professor of music production and engineering at Berklee, and previous president of AES. “With the lightning-fast rate at which AI applications continue to evolve, it’s essential for musicians, educators, developers, and all stakeholders in the creative economy to engage on these complicated issues in a meaningful, ongoing dialogue.”
The keynote speakers for this event are composer Tod Machover and research scientist and technologist Anna Huang. Noted as “America’s most wired composer” by The Los Angeles Times and “a musical visionary” by The New York Times, Machover’s presentation takes an in-depth look at how AI technology is becoming a valuable resource for musicians to uncover and unlock human potential in a variety of contexts. Huang, a judge and organizer of the AI Song Contest who will be joining the MIT faculty in the fall of 2024, will discuss recent advancements in generative AI modelling that have opened up possibilities for human-AI collaboration in composition and performance.
Other featured presenters include intellectual property and technology lawyer Emily Tait, who will delve into copyright laws as they relate to generative AI; Northwestern professor Bryan Pardo, who will examine the use of AI techniques in sonic art; and several Berklee faculty members who both create and teach with AI including Akito van Troyer (Electronic Production and Design), Ben Camp (Songwriting), Mark Simos (Songwriting), and Carlos Arana (Music Business and Production for Berklee Online).
“AES is proud to host this Symposium with the world-renowned Berklee College of Music,” said AES President Leslie Gaston-Bird. “The talent and creativity that comes out of this institution combined with the networking power and ingenuity of the AES will be a catalyst for an unforgettable 2024 symposium. Don’t miss it!”
The 2024 AES International Symposium on AI and the Musician is sponsored by Suno and Kits AI. Registration is now open with a discounted rate available for AES student members.
