Twenty-eight years ago, a track was released that would become emblematic of an era and a genre: The Prodigy‘s ‘Firestarter’. Released on the 18th of March, 1996, ‘Firestarter’ was a groundbreaking piece of music, blending elements of electronica, breakbeat, and punk to create something entirely new and invigorating. Its raw energy and aggressive sound marked a significant departure from the rave-centric style The Prodigy was initially known for, propelling them into the mainstream spotlight.
‘Firestarter’ was notable not just for its unique sound, but also for its iconic music video featuring the late Keith Flint‘s unforgettable performance, which helped to cement the track’s place in music history. The song’s relentless beat, coupled with Flint‘s punk-infused vocals, made it a staple on dance floors and in the charts, reflecting the evolving landscape of electronic music in the mid-90s.
The Prodigy, already established in the UK’s underground rave scene, broke into wider recognition with ‘Firestarter’, showcasing their ability to innovate and defy musical conventions. The track stood out for its fusion of electronic and punk elements, a reflection of the band’s diverse influences and experimental approach to music production.
Today, ‘Firestarter’ remains a crucial track in the annals of electronic music, illustrating The Prodigy‘s significant impact on the genre. Its aggressive, high-energy style has influenced countless artists and continues to resonate with audiences, serving as a testament to The Prodigy‘s innovative spirit and lasting legacy in the music world.

10 years ago, the dance music world gave rise to a talent shrouded deep in mystery and broody productions. He would go by the moniker ZHU, and as a true testament to his electronic prowess, he quickly earned himself a Grammy nomination with his chart-topping debut single, "Faded."
Throughout the decade, the San Francisco native would hone his sound, from the elemental tones of 2016's Generationwhy to the forward-thinking soundscapes found in 2021's Dreamland. Through star-studded collaborations and driving synths, he advanced his craft, with the future always at the bullseye of his target.
However, for his next project, ZHU returned to the city by the Bay hoping for inspiration through introspection. And so, with his feet back on San Francisco soil, he tapped into his past, manifesting a bevy of melancholic melodies collectively christened as GRACE.
Born out of the hallowed halls of the city's renowned Grace Cathedral, the aptly titled album reveals ZHU's pilgrimage from darkness to light. A deviation from his dancefloor-ready past, GRACE forces us to step into the mind of the virtuosic producer and follow along in his crusade.
The Nob Hill sanctuary where the 21 tracks were recorded unearthed an array of emotions from ZHU, resulting in a vulnerable effort. Themes such as confusion, anguish, yearning and insecurity can be found throughout the two-disc album.
ZHU.Henry Ammann
Sonically, GRACE is cohesive, keeping course with bass and synth-heavy productions paired with ZHU's signature sultry, breathy vocals. However, the contemplative journey does take surprising deviations along the way, toying with different elements from across the music spectrum.
In "Praise," for example, guitar stings tatalize while BANKS serenades us into an unexpected, spitfire rap alongside ZHU and bludnymph. Hip-hop beats can also be found in "Devil's Prescription" and "Blind Believer" (with Rea Cragun and Rexx Life Raj).
Grimy, industrial productions are embraced in "Rolling" (with The Bloody Beetroots) and "Days Before Grace." Meanwhile, rock-inspired characteristics are prominently displayed in "Villain," "Love Is Strong" and "Thrill Again" (with UPSAHL).
However, the best use of these hidden genres is in "Dragonfruit," where ZHU teams up with Emotional Oranges for a passionate, piano-driven gem. Here we find a surprisingly delightful exploration of drum & bass over a seductive lyric.
The final standout on GRACE is its latest single, "Settle For Less," featuring Sabrina Claudio. Leading with a string of haunting keys over Claudio's soothing vocals, the cut crashes into a swell of rhythmic percussion as ZHU's notes join in midway. The record is then sealed with a kiss as a sultry saxophone sends us off.
ZHU's excursion back to his hometown resulted in nearly two dozen tracks united by dark tones and minimalistic melodies. A compelling departure from his prior projects, GRACE is an artistic endeavor ZHU needed to pursue as he immersed himself in a spiritual realm surrounded by the stained glass windows and marble columns of the Grace Cathedral.

Justin Timberlake's latest album, Everything I Thought It Was bridges the gap between nostalgia and the novelty of the now, courtesy of Calvin Harris' Midas touch.
Timberlake's latest marks his grand return since 2018's Man of the Woods, taking fans on a journey that intertwines the past and present into a new offering of dancefloor ready anthems.
His collaboration with Harris kicks off with "F**ckin' Up The Disco," a track that immediately sets the dancefloor ablaze with a confident sense of rhythm and disco dynamism. Harris masterfully weaves twinkling synths and funky plucks through the fabric of the track, wrapping Timberlake's vocals in an angelic vocoder effect that elevates the song to heavenly heights.
The next track, "No Angels" also features Harris' production and best embraces some of the album's central themes of letting go and losing yourself on the dancefloor. Harris' production meets the moment, wholly encapsulating the essence of contemporary dance music and transforming the space into a sanctuary of freedom and fleeting moments.
Completing the triad of Harris' productions, "Infinity Sex" turns the funky dial up to eleven. The track is imbued with disco-centric production and effects that flirt with Timberlake's smooth and charming delivery, creating a playful yet sultry atmosphere that's irresistibly groovy.
Between the efforts of the two powerhouse artists, Everything I Thought It Was stands as a celebration of collaboration and the enduring power of a good beat. In addition to Harris, the album features production from Louis Bell, Cirkut and, of course, Timbaland, among others.

KSHMR teams up again with Finnish singer-songwriter Tiina for his latest single “Happy,” a track that delves deep into the process of transforming trauma into empowerment and peace. This collaboration, marked by Tiina’s soulful vocals and the dark, energetic chords and melodies that KSHMR is known for, reflects a complex emotional and sonic journey. The lyrics, penned by KSHMR, reveal a story of overcoming trauma and finding a form of twisted zen in the aftermath, all within the framework of a dance song. “The lyrics are about being numbed by trauma and emerging with a twisted sense of zen,” KSHMR reveals, Tiina’s soulful delivery complements this theme, turning KSHMR’s deeply personal lyrics into a universal message of overcoming adversity. “To me, the song is about using hard times as fuel,” Tiina reflects on the track’s exploration of finding strength in vulnerability. The union of dark, Phrygian chords and deep lyrics against the backdrop of KSHMR’s pristine production flawlessly blends emotional depth with global main stage energy.

Armed with a subtle yet rumbling soundscape that gradually escalates into an intricately woven electronic frenzy, LA-based electronic producer Bisaria has marked himself as an artist who’s making incredible strides in the industry.
Known for weaving Indian themes into his music, he strongly believes in expressing elements of his culture through his sound and aesthetic. Similar sounds and touches can be heard in his original track “Fortress”. His live performances also feature something very distinct – the alto-saxophone – skillfully played by Bisaria himself. He has showcased his talent across major cities including Miami, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Las Vegas, serving as a supporting act for major artists such as Deadmau5, Flume, Rezz, Duke Dumont, Aluna, Aminé and more.
Now, he’s presented a breathtaking rendition of the renowned movie Dune’s expansive soundtrack. By starting with Hans Zimmer’s minimalist “Gom Jabbar” track as a foundation and incorporating a primal, tribal scream, Bisaria introduces slow-burning, pulsating percussion and an elegant sitar, yielding a remarkably refreshing interpretation. The result is simultaneously edgy, mysterious, haunting, and compelling, encapsulating a captivating blend of elements.
We had the opportunity to chat with Bisaria some more about this work. Check it out below!
What initially drew you to Hans Zimmer’s “Gom Jabbar” track from the Dune soundtrack, and what inspired you to create a remix of it? –
The vocal element of “Gom Jabbar” instantly evoked memories from my childhood, particularly the singers at the temples we visited in Rajasthan.
Did you often watch Dune throughout your studio sessions for this remix?
I didn’t necessarily watch the film throughout the studio sessions, but I did often explore the rest of the Dune soundtrack, as well as other pieces by Hans Zimmer from different films.
Separately, there was a re-release I attended ahead of Dune 2’s premiere. Watching it again in a theater setting made me glad I acted on the inspiration I felt two years ago upon my first viewing.
“Fortress,” your latest original track, also features Indian sonic elements. How do you ensure that these cultural elements are authentically represented in your music while still maintaining a contemporary electronic sound?
For tracks that lean towards Indian motifs, the inspiration often comes unexpectedly and from a variety of sources — perhaps most often while listening to (western) classical music if it’s in the minor pentatonic scale.
Just to be clear — I don’t position myself as a traditional Indian musician schooled in the genre, but rather as someone deeply influenced by classic Bollywood and religious Indian music from my upbringing — those melodies/scales/instruments resonate with me profoundly. I don’t know if that means it’s not “authentic,” but I suppose authenticity is subjective anyway in this context.
We understand that you incorporate the alto-saxophone into your live performances. How does this instrument add to the live experience, and what led you to include it in your sets?
I started playing the alto-saxophone, clarinet, and baritone-sax at age 12, eventually traveling the country in high school to perform as part of a jazz band. The real push to include the alto-sax in my live sets happened while watching a Big Wild show for the first time back in 2018 — his sets involve mixing live instruments with dance music in a way that just clicked for me. It made me think, “Hey, I can bring my own twist to this.”
So, having been able to play for so many years, it was easy for me to identify moments in a typical DJ set where a sax could enrich the track. The natural evolution of this was for me to start including it in my original music — the most prominent track with sax thus far has been “Chase” which I released last year.
Having supported major artists like Deadmau5, Flume, and Rezz, what have been some standout moments or lessons learned from these experiences that have influenced your own musical journey?
Sharing the stage with giants like Deadmau5, Duke Dumont, and Rezz was like taking an advanced course in how to truly connect with an audience. Watching them work, I saw firsthand how they craft a journey through their sets, blending emotions and energy to create unforgettable experiences.
Prior to opening for these artists, I adopted a highly analytical approach, dissecting their sets to understand the timing between tracks, transition styles, crossover elements, the pacing of BPM throughout a set, and more. Understanding their techniques in this way taught me the importance of flow in a live set, how to weave together different tracks while placing them in the larger context of the full performance.
The biggest takeaway for me has been the value of staying present and adaptable. I very quickly moved away from pre-planned sets in favor of a more fluid, dynamic approach, allowing me to better engage with the audience and react in real-time.

Since its inception in 1996, Spybar has become synonymous with Chicago's identity as a destination to experience live electronic music. However, the storied clubbing institution has found itself at the center of controversy after Dino Gardiakos, its owner, was reportedly arrested and charged with drug trafficking.
Gardiakos was recently arrested at O'Hare International Airport, where he was found to be in possession of a staggering 14 pounds of ketamine and nearly six grams of ecstasy hidden within several containers in his luggage, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Gardiakos, 43, allegedly admitted the drugs were purchased in London and intended for sale in the Chicagoland area. Prosecutors say the individual from whom Gardiakos purchased the substances additionally provided advice on how to elude detection at O'Hare customs upon his arrival. The charges against him include felony drug trafficking and possession of a controlled substance.
In response to these charges, a judge has ordered Gardiakos's release on pretrial probation services, pending a court hearing scheduled for April 5th. He was already on probation for a previous felony drug charge at the time of his most recent arrest.
