We recently sat down with one of the living legends of Dance music for a chat.
When you hear the name Hardwell, what’s the first thought that comes to your mind? ‘Spaceman‘? Ultra Miami? Electro House? Whatever you think of, though, the undeniable fact is that this man jumped to the spotlight around 2012, and from the next year on, he was atop the EDM spectrum. Hit after hit, track after track, show after show. Every new concept he came up with was more spectacular than the last.
He’s learnt to carry that very energy and magic for all these years. The proof is that, even after taking a break from the shows and going relatively silent for some time, people still look up to him, and through his current Big Room Techno sound he’s still the very trendsetter he was when he played Miami in 2013 — a defining moment in Dance music history, and one that marked a before and after for many fans and enthusiasts, me included.
Well, during his recent South America tour alongside Ultra, we got to sit down with him and have a lovely little chat. So sit back, and enjoy our conversation, which involved everything from his most recent Ultra Miami set, music collaborations he’s done, and even a look into the future.
The Interview
(Please note, the bolded text represents a question, while the paragraph(s) following it represent Hardwell’s answers.)
First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. We’re super, super excited to have you. So, first of all, how are you feeling today, mate? Are you excited for your return to South America?
I’m really excited, yeah. It’s been a while. Last show I played here in South America was Brazil, if I’m not mistaken, so it’s been over a year. So, I’m happy to be back here in Chile. And it’s Ultra, I’m closing the night, so I can’t complain. I’m really excited.
Absolutely. Actually, glad to have met you at an Ultra event. Kind of your second home when it comes to festivals, in my eyes, at least.
Yeah.
We were all awaiting your Ultra Miami gig this year. That was quite the rollercoaster of emotions. I bet for you and the crowd as well. How did you feel playing Saturday? Do you feel the vibes were amplified because of the show being rescheduled from Friday to Saturday?
Well, as you mentioned, it was such an emotional rollercoaster. I think it couldn’t work out better than it actually did. You know, that sunset slot reminded me so much of my 2013 set.
Absolutely.
Which was one of my favourites that I ever played at Ultra. So, yeah. I think everything happens for a reason, right? That’s what I’m always saying. So, I think it was a perfect example of something that actually worked out in the end. And probably even better than playing on Friday. So, yeah.
I bet. It was incredible. Actually, I see the 2013 link. That was my first set of yours and there was sort of a flashback all throughout.
It had the same energy, obviously, but I feel like the anticipation was also the same.
Yeah. Let’s change topics for a bit. About your most recent monster collaboration, ‘16‘, alongside Blasterjaxx and Maddix. You guys have great chemistry in your sounds. How did the track come about? How was it born?
Credit: Koen Akkermans Actually, Maddix approached me. In ’16’, we sampled that horn. It’s from an old, early Hardstyle track. And Maddix approached me around two years ago, saying he wanted to do something with the song. It was one of my favourite songs when I started out as a DJ, when I was 14 or 15 years old. So, yeah. I definitely wanted to jump on it.
It was tough, though. Didn’t have the time. There was a lot of hustle with the clearance of that sample. I didn’t see it happen. In the end, it was like, “You know what, I’m not sure what we’re going to do with this track“. And then, boom. I got a phone call a year and a half later. We got the clearance for the sample. That was the moment we actually started working on it. Finished it, because there was a demo floating around. Maddix was playing it, Blasterjaxx were playing it. It was just floating around for such a long time. And then I finally put my hands on it and made the final touches.
It’s incredible that artists like you, as big as you, still have problems clearing samples. It’s a whole world.
You don’t want to push that, you know? I’m not really a sample kind of guy. 80% of my songs are original songs that I wrote myself. But sometimes it’s super cool if you have an idea and you love a track so much, why not sample it? And introduce a completely new crowd and… you know, my fans are so much younger! They don’t know that song from 2001. They were probably born after 2001. Sometimes it’s really cool to sample something and introduce a new generation to a record that I loved when I was younger. It makes me feel old when I say this kind of stuff. [laughter]
Haha! Well, how’s the reception been on the track? How does the crowd react to it? Is it kind of a highlight moment in your sets?
Definitely, yeah. Especially at Ultra, when you play the new, new music.
That no one knows.
No, that’s always the most anticipated moment. People know that I’m always dropping a lot of unreleased stuff. I think that’s the coolest thing when you see a DJ live. I think the best part of my job is to introduce and educate people about new music, instead of playing out the hit songs. It’s super easy for me to go on stage and bang out my ‘Every Time We Touch’ remix which everybody loves, and that’s fine. I can play out Spaceman, which everybody loves. But in the end, I think it’s always cooler to play the new stuff and the unreleased stuff, and educate them with new sounds and new directions of music.
And it gets you excited as well, because if you play Spaceman every single time for 10, 15 years…
But I have to, though, I have to. You get what I’m saying.
Another topic, the sample pack you released a little while ago with Apple. Well, that’s absolutely neat! What inspired you to share a piece of your sound, your textures, even your identity with other producers, new producers and everything?
Well, even with Revealed, my record label, I always try to help out new talents, guide them, do the A&R. I’ve been working with Logic, which is a digital audio workstation (DAW) from Apple, since I was 18, so I’ve always been with Apple. And when they approached me and asked if we could do something together like a sample pack, I had just finished the album REBELS NEVER DIE, I was like, “You know what? I can take inspiration from all of those kick drums and from the album itself and finally release that“. Because I got so many questions about the kick drums, about how I programmed the basslines and everything. I mean, first of all, if Apple approached you to do a collaboration, you can’t say no. [laughter]
Absolutely.
And secondly, it’s a perfect collaboration to be able to finally put out a sample pack in this way. I don’t ask for any money. It’s a free sample pack, I don’t want to be that guy, “Follow me on YouTube, buy my sample packs!”, I don’t care. If you really want to help people out you should do it for free.
The last question to close this. Do you hope you can keep inspiring and shaping the sound of EDM like you’ve been doing for the last decade or so, or do you feel like it’s time to leave that to someone else?
Hardwell: No pressure. Good question. No pressure. [laughter] No, I always try. I love Dance music so much. I need Dance music more than my own oxygen, I’m not even kidding! I always try to push every single boundary in Dance music. I want to keep it interesting for myself and for the crowd. Obviously, everybody follows, kind of, trends. Even after the REBELS NEVER DIE album, I took a lot of inspiration from my childhood, from the Dance music from back when Tiësto was coming up in 2001. 99 even. Around that time. It’s always like a cycle of music. I just try to make my version out of it, and I’m glad to see that so many people got inspired by that. I’ll always try to look out for new genres, new ideas. If somebody gets really bored real quick, that’s me. So when I’m in the studio, I always try to do something different.
(End of the interview)
Final Words
There are no words other than “Thank You” in capital letters from my end. Having been inspired by Robbert back when I wasn’t even in Highschool, I could only dream of meeting him, let alone sitting down and having a chat. Pinch me moment, no one told me the time when I’d meet my first EDM role model was so close. Thank you to him for being such a friendly lad, and thank you to the entire team who worked to make this one happen.

In a statement by the UK Competition and Markets Authority out today (Thursday 2.5.24), AlphaTheta Corporation (AlphaTheta) announced last year a deal to acquire Serato Audio Research Limited (Serato). AlphaTheta is involved in the manufacture of DJ equipment, including mixers, controllers, DJ players and all-in-one systems under the Pioneer DJ brand, and both parties are involved in developing DJ software.
After conducting an initial Phase 1 investigation, the CMA found that AlphaTheta and Serato compete closely to supply DJ software – with the latter being seen as the market leader. The deal, if allowed, would create a supplier almost double the size of its nearest rival, consolidating the market and potentially impacting the price, quality, and innovation of DJ software. The CMA is concerned that the remaining (largely much smaller) suppliers would not provide strong enough competition to constrain AlphaTheta and Serato once combined.
The CMA also found that the deal could weaken competition in various DJ hardware markets by restricting or worsening AlphaTheta’s rival DJ hardware manufacturers’ access to Serato’s software. Maintaining current levels of competition in all relevant DJ hardware types is particularly important given AlphaTheta’s already strong position in these markets.
The investigation also revealed concerns that AlphaTheta’s DJ hardware competitors could be disincentivised to innovate or share information with Serato as this could then be used by the combined business in their own DJ hardware product development.  Also, AlphaTheta could, after the deal is completed, reduce its own innovation efforts to stay only marginally ahead of its rivals.
Joel Bamford, Executive Director for Mergers at the CMA, said:
“DJs and entertainers depend on having access to the best equipment and software in order to put on a good show. We’ve found this deal could substantially reduce competition in DJ software, resulting in increased prices, less innovation, and less choice. We’re also concerned it could negatively impact the hardware markets by allowing the combined business to leverage Serato’s leading software to harm its hardware competitors, ultimately affecting DJs and consumers. It’s now up to AlphaTheta and Serato to address our concerns.”
Both AlphaTheta and Serato have 5 working days to respond with meaningful solutions to the CMA, otherwise, the deal will be referred to a more in-depth Phase 2 investigation.
More information can be found on the AlphaTheta / Serato case page.

The feud between TikTok and Universal Music Group over a hostile licensing dispute has ended after the companies inked a new licensing deal, according to a joint press release.
That means UMG, which wields the world's largest music catalog of roughly four million songs, will soon unmute those tracks on TikTok. Music by Taylor Swift, deadmau5, David Guetta, Drake, Tiësto, Olivia Rodrigo and many more will reportedly return in the next two weeks.
After UMG in late-January shared a scathing letter that castigated TikTok for mistreating its artists, hundreds of millions of videos were muted on the platform as the company removed its songs from the app en masse. The controversy gripped both the creator economy and music industry at large, leaving artists to grapple with the fallout and turn to other platforms for promotion.
One of the cornerstones of the new agreement is protection against the scourge of generative AI for artists. TikTok has committed to working with UMG to improve songwriter attribution and remove unauthorized AI-generated music from the platform, which has over a billion monthly active users. The two companies "will work together to ensure AI development across the music industry will protect human artistry and the economics that flow to those artists and songwriters," today's press release reads.
As part of the deal, they will also work together to establish "new monetization opportunities" and develop campaigns to support UMG's artists by virtue of TikTok's business model.
"This new chapter in our relationship with TikTok focuses on the value of music, the primacy of human artistry and the welfare of the creative community," said Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group. "We look forward to collaborating with the team at TikTok to further the interests of our artists and songwriters and drive innovation in fan engagement while advancing social music monetization."
"Music is an integral part of the TikTok ecosystem and we are pleased to have found a path forward with Universal Music Group," added TikTok CEO Shou Chew. "We are committed to working together to drive value, discovery and promotion for all of UMG’s amazing artists and songwriters, and deepen their ability to grow, connect and engage with the TikTok community."
UMG and TikTok are now "working expeditiously" to reinstate the former's music on the latter's social media platform "in due course."
Meanwhile, the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance after President Joe Biden signed a bill that will ban the app in the U.S. unless its Chinese-owned parent company, ByteDance, sells it to an approved buyer. TikTok reportedly plans to challenge the bill in court.

It’s unfortunate to see another major festival, We Are FSTVL 2024, canceled due to heavy rainfall. Council leaders in London have cited “safety concerns” as the reason behind the cancellation as “record levels of rainfall” posed a risk to the attendees. This has left many fans disappointed once again. The festival was scheduled to take place on May 25-26 this year. But We Are FSTVL confirmed earlier this week via Instagram that it will not be going ahead.
We Are FSTVL 2024 was welcoming Eric Prydz and Chase & Status to headline. Joining them were Eats Everything, Gorgon City, Groove Armada, Hybrid Minds, Patrick Topping, Sonny Fodera, and more. However, just days before the team was supposed to start the build, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham realized that they would not be able to provide a safe event space. One that met the requirements of the organizers. The News in London reported the heaviest period of rainfall in their history of 1,695.9mm of rain from October 2022 to March 2024. As a result, the festival was unable to return to its original location at Dagenham’s Central Park. Where it held its first edition in 2013.
We Are FSTVL Social Media Last year they shared the timing and location change for the 2024 edition. The previous few editions of We Are FSTVL took place in Damyns Hall Aerodrome in Upminster at the end of August. The team is now focusing on preparing for next year’s festival. They have expressed their excitement to bring new experiences to the event in 2025. EDMTunes hopes the weather Gods do stay in favour for all upcoming shows this summer! Stay tuned for all your latest dance music event news!

Following the incredible success of last year’s inaugural daytime event, John Digweed and Bedrock Records are coming back to London with another special summer party for 2024.
Taking place at XOYO on Sunday, June 2, Bedrock’s second-ever London day party will run from 4 pm to 10 pm, with a special extended ‘all day long’ set from label head John Digweed.
The label’s debut daytime event in October last year marked 25 years since the launch of the original Bedrock monthly parties at London’s Heaven and also celebrated the 1000th episode of John Digweed’s fabled Transitions radio show, which was recorded live from the club.
This year, attendees can look forward to another immersive sensory experience complete with state-of-the-art visuals, lighting and sound design, as one of London’s most established venues transforms into a haven for electronic music lovers and Bedrock fans alike.
Speaking about the upcoming event, John Digweed commented:
“After doing so many parties in the capital over the years, I hadn’t actually done a daytime event in London until last year. Last year’s Bedrock party at XOYO changed all that when I celebrated 1000 Transitions radio shows, and 25 years since the original Bedrock parties at Heaven first began. All I can say is that the energy and atmosphere from the very start was truly incredible and a real credit to the Bedrock crowd who really appreciate great music and bring so much energy to the dancefloor. I just had to host another daytime event there as the last one was so special”.

It seems Calvin Harris is ready to release another summer anthem with a powerhouse collaborator.
The chart-topping producer this week posted a video of an ocean alongside a breezy beat featuring a voice that fans all across the web are convinced belongs to Miley Cyrus. As sun-kissed waves peacefully lap onto the shoreline, the vocals compliment soft chords before a four-on-the-floor beat kicks in.
In true Calvin Harris fashion, the vocals blend effortlessly into an uplifting, summery beat. "We were dancing, we were wild in the ocean," they croon. "When the crowd is all around me, you’re still all I see."
Leaving nothing but a cryptic caption with wave emojis, Harris did not leave any hints in his post. And while he has not yet officially confirmed Cyrus' involvement in the track, the overwhelming consensus is that the sultry vocals belong to her.
Naturally, fans are also now clamoring for the third installation of Harris' beloved Funk Wav Bounces album series, which would include features from an array of contemporary superstars. The previous two volumes included acclaimed tracks with the likes of Frank Ocean, Dua Lipa, Justin Timberlake and many more.
Watch Harris tease the rumored collaboration with Cyrus below.

Hot off the heels of a Coachella performance for the ages, Michael Bibi has released a merch collection to benefit cancer research.
Bibi's uplifting set at the festival's remarkable new Quasar stage marked his first show back since his treatment for CNS Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. In mid-March, the renowned DJ and Solid Grooves label boss announced that his three-month post-treatment scan results came back clear after nearly a year of intensive chemotherapy.
"I am pure & I am free," Bibi wrote on Instagram a week ago. "Recovery is a slow healing process but ‘god’ had given me a second chance & I plan on using it to build a better future. See you all this summer."
After wearing a special "One Life" tee onstage at Coachella, he's now launched an eponymous collection, which includes three t-shirt designs with butterfly imagery. Emblazoned on one of them is the quote, "Life is a journey, embrace the winds, navigate the storms, emerge from the cocoon of challenges, fly free as a butterfly." What should have been a triumphant return with new music for the Swedish House Mafia has turned into an unexpectedly bumpy road for the reunited electronic dance music legends.
The buildup to their hotly anticipated new single “Lioness” has been plagued by delays, mixed messaging, and even some fan backlash – an uncharacteristic misstep from the usually hyper-meticulous DJ/producer trio of Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello.
It all started promisingly enough when Swedish House Mafia began teasing “Lioness” in the fall of 2023 during their wildly popular Ibiza set at Ushuaïa. They continued dropping teasers into early 2024, building hype for their first new original music since the 2023 single “Ray of Solar.”
Then in mid-April, they shared a pre-save link for “Lioness” on streaming platforms, signaling an imminent release date within the standard 2-week pre-save window. Excitement reached a fever pitch when they performed the new track during the season-opening show at Brooklyn Mirage on April 27th.
However, immediately after that live debut, Swedish House Mafia announced “Lioness” would not be released as expected. In a tweet, they explained: “After playing it live we weren’t satisfied with the production and needed to do last minute changes.”

That kicked off a stretch of baffling decisions and miscommunications. They asked to remove a video clip uploaded by a fan where the song was played by Tomorrowland’s One World Radio saying it was the wrong version.
Fans grew increasingly restless amid the mixed signals, with some harshly criticizing the “amount of unprofessionalism” on display. “This whole Lioness thing has become a Monty Python sketch,” one disgruntled supporter tweeted. “Hype is dying fast tbh. We learned not to trust them even if they officially announce a date,” wrote another.

Last month’s well-received Brooklyn warm-up show proved Swedish House Mafia can still captivate a crowd live. But without clear communication, residual nostalgia could fade.
But if there’s any act that can navigate these dicey waters, it’s the meticulous hitmakers who helped elevate EDM from the underground to the mainstream over the past two decades. Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello have always been students of the game, knowing how to strategically build and sustain hype around their music.
Perhaps all the fits and starts are simply the final steps in an elaborately mapped-out rollout for “Lioness.”
But if “Lioness” fails to live up to immense expectations set by years of anticipation and hype, this messy prelude will be seen as another misstep. The stakes remain sky-high for the trio to stick their landing.

There is a new, exciting version of Les Irreprissibles‘ “In This Shirt” by the electronic artist Elegie out now. The Swiss artist has gotten great reviews for her latest work in the techno and experimental scenes.
Elegie makes music that is both intellectual and emotional. She has a background in science and technology. Her remix combines ethereal melodies with deep, driving basslines, fusing the cosmic with the real in a captivating sound trip.
She changes the haunting vocals of the original by adding shimmering synth sounds and driving beats. It’s both mentally stimulating and fun to dance to.
Elegie’s unique atmospheric style moves between techno, ambient, and experimental music. She may be the only artist working in the electronic scene today who can combine raw technical skills with deep thought and story-telling.
In addition to her studio records, Elegie has built a devoted fan base through her transcendent live shows. She is known for being a moving live performer. She has played at prestigious bars like San Francisco’s Monarch. People are amazed at how she went from being a scientist to a cutting-edge electronic artist.
The “In This Shirt” remix has already gotten so much praise that it solidifies Elegie’s position as one of the most interesting and clever people taking electronic music to new heights. By blending science and art so well, she has created something both cosmic and grounded, which is a wonderful paradox to experience.

Maurits Jan Westveen, perhaps more commonly known as industry heavyweight Mau P, has officially returned to Insomniac Records with a hooky new club staple, “On Again.” Since making his Insomniac debut with “Gimme That Bounce” in early 2023, Mau P has linked his steadily growing catalog to some of dance music’s most cutting edge imprints. With an official music video due on May 2nd, “On Again” has arrived on the calloused heels of “BEATS FOR THE UNDERGROUND,” Westveen’s massively anticipated track ID that landed on Repopulate Mars in January. If there’s one thing that separates “On Again” from Mau P’s previous releases, it’s that it features vocals from none other than the producer himself.
On April 21st, during Coachella Weekend 2, Mau P played out the new record during a back-to-back set with Diplo. Soon after, the Dutch frontrunner teased a video clip featuring an unforeseen collaborator. “I just didn’t have anyone else,” Mau P explains in the behind-the-scenes studio footage. It quickly becomes clear Westveen is responding to internationally acclaimed record producer Mike Dean, who had asked about the demo’s vocal performance in the clip.
“On Again” is a simple yet tasteful contribution to dance music amidst the developing festival season. Stream the Mike Dean-assisted record, doubling as Mau P’s vocal debut, below.

TWO LANES continue the build-up to their forthcoming EP, Innervision, with “Mind.” The second single from the project, following “Abstraction,” released in early March, “Mind” evokes the emotive and introspective elements that have come to define the Berlin-based production pair’s sound—an often reflective amalgamation of acoustic piano and analogue synthesizers with subtle rhythmic elements.
“We developed this track after our last tour, when we came back to the studio and were trying to get into the creative mind again,” TWO LANES shared on X. “Really excited to finally share the outcome of this time with you all.”
TWO LANES are in the midst of their Scandinavian tour, for which three dates remain before the live initiative concludes at ANTE Festival on May 29. Purchase tickets to the last three stops here.

The organizers of New York City's Tribeca Festival have announced a rare screening of Daft Punk's beloved anime film, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.
Originally released in May 2003 as a visual companion to the duo's sophomore album Discovery, Interstella 5555 was created by Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and former Daft Punk creative director Cédric Hervet alongside anime legend Leiji Matsumoto. With its inventive animation, the audacious film transcended the boundaries of mere music video at the time, conceiving a captivating sci-fi saga and setting a stratospheric benchmark for audiovisual storytelling.
Interstella 5555 is now premiering in North America in remastered 4K, a rarity considering it's seldom aired in theaters, let alone in its original format. The hourlong film was splintered into scenes for a number of Daft Punk music videos in the past, including the ageless "One More Time."
Daft Punk aren't the only electronic music legends to appear in a Tribeca film this year. The festival is also airing a new documentary about the life and legacy of Avicii, who tragically died by suicide in 2018. Directed by Henrik Burman, Avicii - I'm Tim will feature never-before-heard interviews with the superstar DJ as well his collaborators, like Coldplay's Chris Martin.
"Before there was Avicii, there was just Tim," reads the film's synopsis. "For the first time through his own words, witness the journey of a shy but prodigious musical talent who would soon become one of the defining artists of his generation."
The screening of Interstella 5555 is scheduled for Friday, June 14th at 8pm. You can purchase tickets here for $32.

HVDES has released a searing new single, a razored reminder that even in our darkest hours, the human soul has an almost supernatural tenacity to cling to life and meaning.
Like the ancient city from which it takes its name, "Babylon (Don’t Let Me Fall)," chronicles the rise and inevitable fall of personal empires, questioning whether the foundations were ever truly stable to begin with. Awash in a haze of distortion, HVDES' aching vocals bleed with a profound sense of existential angst: "Am I corrupted? Is it my fault?" she quivers.
Meanwhile, her stark imagery of scorched earth and smoldering temples invokes a visceral sense of loss and disillusionment. She then decimates them with the song's destructive drop, but amidst the rubble, a glimmer of hope persists within its lyricism—a plea to whatever higher power may exist to not let her spirit succumb to the same fate as the fabled Babylon.
Reckoning with her own fragility in the throes of an existential crisis, HVDES shows that it's not always easy to find something to believe in. But by giving breath to the darkest depths of her psyche, she lyrically cauterizes those wounds and reminds us of the resilience that endures—however faintly—when all else seems to turn to ashes.
"Babylon (Don’t Let Me Fall)" is the first single from HVDES' upcoming debut album. You can listen to the new single below and find it on streaming platforms here.
