For someone whose music so often makes people dance, it's ironic that What So Not is more fascinated by the hidden choreography of our daily lives.
That's the inspiration behind his new EP, Motions, which he says is his attempt to breathe audible life into the feelings, textures and other sentient phenomena that dictate our shared reality. As you listen, you might feel the weight of a stranger's gaze or the electric charge of an unspoken connection.
For What So Not, whose real name is Chris Emerson, the EP is essentially a dive into the quantum soup of existence, where he crafts sonic blueprints of reality's raw data. It reminds us that we're all transmitters in this vast cosmic network we call life.
"The ideology behind this whole EP is the motions that are at play around us at all times," Emerson tells EDM.com. "The cover art is actually going to be crashing into some water and watching the ripple effect of its wings pan out across the whole pond. And it represents how so many things are at play that we can't see unless they enter another medium that we don't even realize is impacting us. We don't even realize how we are radiating to others, and it's really a sonic exploration of those ideas—of the impacts we have and we receive at all times in our existence."
By producing electronic music through the perspective that we're constantly radiating, Emerson invites us into a world where every action and thought ripples outward and comes with their own degree of impact. Motions is the spellbinding soundtrack to this silent ballet.
"I think this is all just an evolution of my understanding of life, where I am with myself and where I am with my craft. I almost feel like this is 2.0," he muses. "This is everything I've understood from times before and I think almost getting back to that core of creating with no judgment, creating what is just truly authentic, and then just letting it be."
"So often in our careers as producers, we start to overwork things, we judge it too much and don't just let it be what it wants to be," Emerson continues. "And I think these are really records at the purest. I'm thinking, 'What does this song want to be? What is this trying to pull out from inside of me?' Letting it be that, and just leaving it be."

Look no further than "Tower In The Woods," a stunning track where What So Not's languid production entwines with haunting vocals by MNDR that seep into your bones like winter frost. With thick kickdrums that crunch through the mix like boots in untrodden snow, the duo explores the depths of isolation and paints a portrait of solitude so vivid you can almost see your breath hanging in the frigid air.
Another highlight comes with "Realise," a collaboration with French electronic music virtuoso Habstrakt. Their frenetic drum & bass rhythm provides a stark backdrop for noir-pop songstress Maiah Manser, whose elegant vocals evoke a sense of both intimacy and vastness. "I can see the sun right in your eyes / Glitter like a million fireflies" is a striking image, beautifully contrasting warmth and distance.
That contrast is by design, according to Emerson, who says his goal was to essentially produce beats that hit hard but also nest into a more emotive and dynamic place. It's a body of work that demands attention—not as a passive listener, but as an active participant.
"I'm trying to find this sweet spot where my music has that knock and that power, but also that beautiful, lush bed underneath," he explains. "Maybe it's just very strong, elastic-type transients hitting on all the drums, but then it nests into this beautiful, characterized world."
Next up for Emerson is a rare performance on on August 22nd at Cologne's Gamescom, the world's largest gaming convention, where he'll be DJing at a "secret dungeon rave" in conjunction with his favorite game, Diablo.
He's then heading to Australia to perform at the viral Bunnings Warehouse Party, which stems from a wild social media campaign that called for a DIY rave after legions of music producers created hilarious remixes of the household hardware and garden company's jingle. The event will take place on Saturday, August 31st in the carpark of Bunnings Warehouse Preston.
Aiming to provide support in the midst of the Australian live music crisis, all proceeds from ticket sales of the Bunnings Warehouse Party and the community sausage sizzle will benefit Support Act, a nonprofit providing relief and mental health services to people in the music industry. Passes are available now.

KAYA is back with "Center of a Storm," a stunning melodic house track that ensnares listeners in a whirlwind of beats and emotions.
Hailing from Bordeaux, France with parents from Cameroon and Congo, the LA-based DJ channels his training in classical piano and film-scoring to produce lush dance music. That unique background is on display in his uplifting new single, which dares you to weather inner hurricanes.
"Center of a Storm" isn't your garden-variety dancefloor filler. It's a battle cry for the battered soul, throwing a rhythmic lifeline to those drowning in their own minds.
Abi Flynn's soulful voice, a beacon cutting through the house haze, weaves a tale of resilience in the face of life's storms. Her lyrics, raw and unflinching, paint a vivid picture of struggle and triumph while KAYA's production swirls around her words like a protective cyclone.
As his beats ebb and flow, one thing becomes clear: in KAYA's storm, we're all lightning rods.
"When working with Abi Flynn, I was quickly drawn to her lyrical message," KAYA tells EDM.com. "For me it really spoke to my journey as an artist and also my life, having gone through the highs and the lows, pushing through and celebrating the wins. The beauty is everyone can relate to this, and that’s what makes it such a powerful song."
"Center of a Storm" will appear on a new 8-track mixtape, which will be released in the fall. Check out the new single below and find it on streaming platforms here.

Kaleena Zanders is at her most defiant in her new single, "BURN IT DOWN," an emboldening house anthem.
The EDM.com Class of 2022 star has returned to Helix Records for the cathartic track, which doubles as a full-blown purge. She essentially detonates the ghost in her machine and rebuilds herself in the ashes of her own production.
With lyrics that are both a battle cry and a liberation mantra, "BURN IT DOWN" is a pyre on which old limitations are consumed. Through stentorian vocals and soaring piano chords that cascade beneath like riptides, Zanders commands attention and demands to be unchained from the icy grip of conformity.
The soulful track is representative of a deeply reflective period of "personal discovery and awakening," according to Zanders. When she writes songs, she does so through the perspective of a superhero character she created, she says.
"I've become an internal burning flame that cleanses my soul of tired conditions and false beliefs of myself and the world," she explained in a press release. "Through this ecdysis and growth I feel fierce and outraged that our systems have led us astray and betrayed all of us. This is my notion to start over and raise the stakes to reach a greater good and work toward living a life that is free and if not free, a life of peace."

One month following the release of his first single ‘every little part’, TNH superstar Le Youth drops ‘Golden‘. This second track from his upcoming EP & is a powerful collaboration with emerging sensation MYRNE and talented singer and songwriter Bertie Scott. Now available on This Never Happened, brace yourself for another emotive collaboration that will keep you hitting the repeat button.
Golden
‘Golden’ captivates with a mesmerizing build-up, featuring lush, ambient pads and soft, echoing synths that create a dreamy, almost ethereal soundscape. The minimal percussion, gentle beats, and subtle hi-hats allow the melodic elements to shine. This sets an anticipatory mood before Bertie Scott’s vocals, like the calm before a bright, emotional journey begins. The gradual layering of sounds draws the listener into the track, evoking a sense of warmth and depth. The reflective and emotive lyrics capture a longing and appreciation for fleeting, perfect moments. The song conveys a desire to hold onto something beautiful and pure, symbolized by the word “golden.” It cherishes connections and experiences that feel precious and almost timeless, while acknowledging their ephemeral nature. With poetic and introspective lyrics, the emotional impact of these “golden” moments in life is emphasized.
Wes took to social media today to share the story behind ‘Golden’ revealing that it was originally a collaboration between him and Bertie. Struggling with a creative block, Wes sought input from the rising Singaporean Superstar MYRNE. The result? The first session with MYRNE unleashed Wes’s creativity, turning ‘Golden’ into perhaps Le Youth’s favourite track of this upcoming EP &.
&
Prepare for an unforgettable experience as Le Youth, the beloved California artist, is set to release a new EP & on This Never Happened this October. This EP will feature collaborations with rising stars from the TNH family, showcasing the magic that happens when artists come together. It’s all about enhancing the sounds we already love, and with music being the ultimate unifier, Wes believes in the power of bringing people together both in the studio and at shows. Wes’ music has always been about the people around him; while About Us was was an ode to his fans on the dancefloor, & will be a celebration of the artists he has worked with. SoundCloud's new store is changing the merch landscape for artists, who all-too-often suffer financial losses when hidden fees cut into their profits.
A selection of SoundCloud Next Pro artists now have the opportunity to sell exclusive merchandise while keeping 100% of their profits, the company announced this week. The shop, which is currently in beta, eschews all inventory and storage fees as well as upfront and hidden costs so artists can design and sell exclusive merchandise, retaining 100% of the profits.
How does it work? Artists send their merch designs to the SoundCloud Store to be mocked up, manufactured and sold. Each item, from apparel to exclusive vinyl and accessories and more, is made-to-order with immediate shipping, per SoundCloud.
Artists also retain their merch rights with the ability to sell merch elsewhere, but within the Soundcloud Store, their products remain exclusive only during the drop. Plus, fans are notified when merch drops via emails and in-app notifications.
"Our data shows that fans are most engaged when you release a new track," per SoundCloud. "By dropping merch with SoundCloud, we’ll help amplify the reach of your latest release and promote merch to your fanbase when they’re most engaged, all using our in-house notification capabilities."
A select few artists currently have merch available via the new SoundCloud Store, including Wiz Khalifa and Denzel Curry, among others.
Next Pro artists can now apply to sell their merch. You can shop the SoundCloud Store and find out more here.

Spooky season is arriving early this year, thanks to ATLiens.
Their new track, "Be Your Ghost," fearlessly leans into a sinister theme. The beloved bass music duo fittingly teamed up with vocalist Roniit, the self-described "dark pop sorceress," who is fresh off the release of her third album, Ephemeral.
Her eerie yet inviting vocals melt into ATLiens' heavy-hitting bass elements to deliver a haunting banger. The duo's otherworldly melodies churn underneath before building into a stomping bass drop, which doubles as a full-blown sound design showcase of their signature style.
In other ATLiens news, they recently announced a big show in Minneapolis at the famed Armory with special guest Flosstradamus, among others. Their biggest headlining performance to date will then unfold in their hometown of Atlanta in February 2025.

Burning Man tickets have been notoriously difficult to secure, but it's failed to sell out for the first time in a decade, The Guardian reports.
Organizers on July 31st released 3,000 last-minute tickets in an "unprecedented" move they dubbed the "OMG Sale." As of Tuesday, less than two weeks before the event's start in the Nevada desert, tickets remain available. Scheduled for August 25th to September 2nd with a capacity of 73,000, this year's Burning Man in Black Rock City marks its 38th edition.
"Adjusting 2024 ticket sales to reflect recent trends around the world that show last minute ticket buying, and continuing to sell tickets until the maximum Black Rock City population count is reached, encourages immediacy and makes it easy for more people to immerse themselves at the heart of the global Burning Man cultural movement," Dominique Debucquoy-Dodley, Associate Director Of Communications at Burning Man Project, told The Guardian.
Economic uncertainty and high cost of living could be factors, as well as concerns over the weather. After torrential rains ravaged the playa and left thousands stranded in 2023, it's fair to wonder if the extreme conditions scared folks away this year. Back in 2022, Burners struggled with sweltering temperatures up to 105°.
From a financial standpoint, it can be a daunting task to get to Black Rock City every year. While tickets start at $575, with low-income options available, many spend significantly more just to get to the event, let alone funding art projects and participating in themed camps.
Burning Man tickets are available here.

Sending best recovery wishes to Matt McBriar of BICEP! In late 2023, Matt began experiencing intense localized headaches and unusual fatigue. Blood test taken from this Spring revealed a “large, and pretty rare Craniopharyngioma tumour on my pituitary gland”.
Fortunately, it’s not cancerous and was detected early, preventing potential damage to his eyesight and other problems. He underwent successful surgery on August 9th and is now recovering in the hospital! Recovery will take about 6-8 weeks with some monitoring after that timeframe has passed. In the meantime, Andy Ferguson, the other member of BICEP, will continue performing while Matt recovers.

While Google remains a monopoly in terms of search engine, it has battled both Apple and Samsung in technology since the beginning of smartphones. Will the tide turn around after Google’s latest announcement? The macro company revealed a new series of Pixel devices on Made by Google’s Hardware event. The category is choices! The new Pixel 9 smartphones come in 4 different sizes, besides two different Pixel 3 Watches and Pixel Buds Pro 2.
Not Just Hardware
Multiple announcements took place on this event. This includes new softwares powered by Google’s Gemini large language models. It seems like the company wanted to get a head start from the holiday rush and enjoy the spotlight before Apple announces the new iPhone 16 during their yearly September event.
Pixel 9 Series
The new models offer a wide array of options, from the Pixel 9, to a smaller Pixel 9 Pro or the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL. The phones also include stylistic changes including a pill-shaped elongated bar for the back camera. How demure! The front camera includes smaller bezels around it as well. In terms of durability, Google claims this phones are twice as durable as the Pixel 8 series, wrapped in shatter-resistant Gorilla Glass Victus 2. These devices make an ecological statement using a 100% recyclable aluminum fram, versus the titanium used on the iPhone 15 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The charging seems to be boosted as well with 20% more durability to the Pixel 8 counterparts. However, they do not support the fast wireless charging Qi2, so the slower Qi wireless charging will do.
The Pixel 9 enjoys the power from the Tensor G4 processor with 12GB of RAM. However, the Pro model has 16GB. Google explains that the processor is 20% faster and app launching improved by 17%. On another note, the phones are designed to store large language models on device, a first. Specifically, they are made to run the Gemini Nano with multimodality. AI is taking over! As this will not only support text, but speech, images, audio, and live chat with the Gemini bot for real-time voice conversations.
Pixel 9 Vs Pixel 9 Pro
According to Google, the biggest difference between the regular model and the pro model is the camera quality and the optical quality zoom that the Pro devices offer, up to 10x the zoom in power. The claims dig further into the autofocus sensor improvement on the Pro models and 30% better light sensitivity. Do you think it’s worth it? The public will need to test out the claims for sure.
Both phones will receive updates every 7 years. Moreover, Google claims buyers from the Pixel 9 Pro or Pro XL will get a full year of the Google One AI Premium Plan for free. This, includes 2 terabytes of cloud storage and access to Gemini Advanced. Pixel 9 costs $799 while the Pro costs $999 and the XL version is $100 more. Interestingly enough, the devices run with Android 14 instead of 15.
Pixel 9 Pro Fold
The 8 inch foldable phone is optimized to run apps smoothly, with all the perks its pro sibling has. The internal screen is also brighter than past series of the Fold phones. Furthermore, Google made it a point that the Pixel 9 Pro fold is super thin, and weights less than the original Pixel Fold, skinny legend! However, the camera lacks the prowess of the Pixel 9 Pro single screen siblings. The Fold costs an astonishing $1799, which includes a $300 store credit and a free year with Google One AI Premium Plan.
New Apps and Services
The new Pixel 9 series enjoys the power of running with AI, this includes how you interact with the apps, and how the AI reads the information so you don’t have to scroll endlessly to find what you need. New apps include the weather app, screenshots app, studio apps for creating AI images, and “Call notes”. The Pixel 9 models will be the first Androids with the Satellite SOS, which finds your emergency contacts through Satellite when you’re away from wi-fi or a cell tower. Regardless, the service requires separate purchase and will only work in the US for now.
Pixel Watch 3
Now you can get a 41mm or 45mm Pixel Watch! These watches enjoy some of the brightest screens in the industry, but can go as low as 1 nit. The watches continue the 24-hour battery life trend with permament display, and 20% faster charging from past models. The watch connects to live camera feeds from other google devices in your home and improve camera usage with your Pixel Phone. The watch also has several fitness usages for tracking your progress. The watch can also assess your form while sensing your movement and learning from the machines and exercises you do. The larger watch is $399 with wi-fi or $499 with LTE, while the smaller watch is $50 less.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2
The new buds seem to the an expansion of the 1st ones. More silencing power, lighter, and AI powered voluem change that detects when you’re speaking. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are definitely the way to go for Android devices. The buds will go on sale for $229.
What do we think? Now that AI is taking over technology in dystopian fashion, should we get the XL or the smaller one?

Coaxing even the most reluctant souls to embrace the highs of the weekend, The Blessed Madonna has joined forces with dance-pop icon Kylie Minogue for a new single, "Edge Of Saturday Night."
The track is an invocation of the timeless thrill that comes with shedding the week's burdens and dancing into the freedom of the night. The dazzling collaboration, announced with palpable excitement by both artists in a candid Instagram post following its debut at Ibiza's Circoloco, blends radiant pop sensibility with a heartbeat of uplifting house music.
The track opens with bright, twangy pluck synths that dance like fireflies in the dusk, setting the stage for a night brimming with promise. Minogue's voice glides in with the poetic declaration, "Monday doesn't matter at all," a line that instantly grounds us in the song's ethos: living for the weekend, cutting loose and making the most of the present moment.
As the track unfolds, pirouetting piano chords cascade through the mix, perfectly complementing Minogue’s concise and articulate lyrical delivery. Meanwhile, The Blessed Madonna's bubbling house production ebbs and flows with life, its effervescent rhythms beckoning us to live in the moment.
The show-stopping collaboration is not just a metaphorical victory over the past, but also a harbinger of what's to come as The Blessed Madonna stands poised to unveil her debut album, Godspeed. Due out on October 11th, the album comprises 24 tracks and includes collaborations with A-Trak, Joy Anonymous and house music icon Jamie Principle, among others.
"Godspeed: the word marks the beginning of a journey and sometimes the end of one," The Blessed Madonna said in a statement. "After nearly a year in lockdown, when I signed the paperwork and knew that I was going to be allowed to make this album, I called my dad in Kentucky to tell him the good news. He could not contain his pride and in a way his relief. I was going to be ok. He says it better than I do at the beginning of the record. I lost him suddenly just weeks before the first session, but his voice will live in Godspeed forever and make a million more journeys to everyone who hears it."

Grammy-nominated vocalist HALIENE has unveiled her latest solo single, ‘Memory Of You.’ The track showcases her powerful vocals against a backdrop of melodic bass, exploring the bittersweet emotions of a past relationship. This marks HALIENE’s first solo original release on Ophelia Records. The single was debuted at the Lost in Dreams festival in Los Angeles, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Collaborating with fellow singer-songwriter Annika Wells, HALIENE crafted poignant lyrics that delve into the complexities of nostalgia and heartbreak. The song’s production features a captivating blend of melodic elements and driving beats, creating a sonic landscape that perfectly complements the emotional depth of the lyrics.
Here’s what HALIENE had to say about the track:
“The song explores the juxtaposition of a nostalgic picture of a fading relationship with the chilling reality of waking up to its failure. How does one let go of something that your heart wants to hold onto? Sometimes, the memory of it all lives more fondly in the mind than the reality of what it actually was. That fact, once realized, becomes a powerful and positive means of liberation. We can make the intentional choice to frame our memories of the person in love and not hurt, even when there’s not much that’s genuine to hold onto. It expresses a profound way of releasing and meaningfully crystallizing, even a painful past in love to move on and let go.”
Known for her collaborations with dance music titans like Armin van Buuren, Illenium, and Gareth Emery, HALIENE has established herself as a leading voice in the electronic music scene. Evolving beyond collaborations, HALIENE has solidified herself as a genre-defying solo artist, seamlessly bridging the gap between poetic lyricism and melodic dance music. Her releases boast millions of streams, crafting some of the most iconic melodies within the dance music landscape. Acclaimed for chart-topping singles and energetic live shows, HALIENE has soared to superstar status within the industry. Her debut album “Heavenly,” garnered strong radio support and multiple sold-out stops across her branded solo tours. From Australia to Europe, Mexico to Canada, her performances have electrified fans across the world.
