BT, one of electronic music's most respected voices on music technology, is openly criticizing the flagrant disregard for intellectual property rights by some AI companies.
Expressing his dismay at the unethical practices, he highlighted how some firms are leveraging text-to-music models by scraping content from platforms like Spotify and YouTube without obtaining consent from the original creators.
"There are very few companies respecting intellectual property rights in this space," the influential producer told MusicTech. "I find this an abhorrent misuse of this technology."
BT's insights carry significant weight due to his extensive contributions to music technology. The producer and technologist, who recently released his 15th studio album, has notably developed numerous plugins and tools that have become staples in the industry.
BT.Lacy Transeau
Despite these concerns, BT remains optimistic about AI's potential to benefit artists. He envisions a future where artists can unlock new revenue streams through consensual AI training on their work, per MusicTech.
BT's balanced perspective underscores the need for thoughtful regulation and community involvement in navigating the future of AI's impact on music technology. His vision for AI in the space is one of collaboration and respect, ensuring that technological advancements benefit all artists fairly and ethically.
"I'm thrilled about tools that will fairly reward artists they are trained on that unlock brand-new possibilities for young and seasoned artists alike… There are unimaginable future technologies that all artists, singers, producers and engineers will love to use because they do groundbreaking things they currently don’t have access to," he explained.
"The future is bright and we must as a community [musicians] proactively control and be involved in the narrative of what is acceptable, what is ethical and all couched in a reverence and respect for the large bodies of work created that are needed to train on for effective new tools. There is a lot to look forward to."

A man high on drugs at Florida's Sol Fest attacked a police officer and "bit a chunk" out of his head, FOX 13 News reports.
The electronic dance music festival took place from Thursday, May 2nd to Sunday, May 5th at Vortex Spring, a venue in Ponce de Leon. Deputy Mark Harris of the Holmes County Sheriff's Office had been patrolling the grounds on the second night of Sol Fest when he says he was suddenly accosted by a festival attendee under the influence of drugs.
It was a mix of PCP, LSD, ketamine and mushrooms that reportedly sent James Michael Anderson, a Vortex Springs volunteer, into a violent frenzy during which he bit into the officer's head. Anderson also attempted to grab his weapon, Harris said.
Holmes County Sheriff's Office
During the scuffle, Harris managed to draw his taser, but even the electrical charge seemed to have little effect on the drug-fueled Anderson, who continued to struggle. Backup then arrived and several deputies converged on the scene, wrestling Anderson to the ground and restraining him.
Both Anderson and Harris were reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital. Harris, with a chunk of his head missing, was in shock but stable. Anderson, still combative, was sedated and placed under arrest.
As the news of the attack spread, the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office released a statement detailing the incident. Anderson was ultimately charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.

Ibiza’s Amnesia will teleport you on a magical journey, presenting the NEO residency from Mathame this Summer. The eight-date NEO residency is promising to weave a spiritual journey and the line-up will provide a distinctive experience from June 7th – July 5th, and from September 13th – 27th.
NEO
There is a common thread between Amnesia and Mathame: mysticism, which strengthens and empowers both parties. The nightclub, inaugurated in the 70s, and the Italian duo always return to their roots to thrive in the present and shape an unusual and authentic future that they bring to life.
There is no doubt about the reason for this venture. Amnesia has chosen to give space to NEO, Mathame’s new residency, under the HORIZON framework, aiming to provide the audience not only with a melodic techno event but also a cinematic experience with a setup, development and climax.
The brothers draw inspiration for their melodies from classical music and nature, blending calmness with euphoria to orchestrate a journey that touches our emotional fibers. In each performance, they consider the context of the venue to plan the set. The story they develop at a festival is not the same as in a small club. So, we wonder: What story will they tell in an eight-date residency?
The intrigue is palpable. The line-up announcement has also surprised us with a theme for each date. These have a profound focus that we will soon learn more about. They are Foundation, Glory, Victory, Beauty, Severity, Mercy, Understanding and Wisdom.
The first chapter of this musical tale will feature Anfisa Letyago and Lyke. The following chapters include Mind Against, Olympe, and Overmono (DJ Set). Others include Parisi, Laherte, The Blaze (DJ Set), Kandarta, AME (live) B2B Trikk, Brina Knauss, and Sona. Lastly, Jan Blomqvist, Alex Wann,  NTO (Live), and Pole Position will perform. Special guests are yet to be revealed.
A line-up that will undoubtedly mark a before and after in the relationship between melodic techno and Amnesia’s terrace. Everything is about to begin; get your tickets here.

Just a few weeks ago, techno superstar Deborah De Luca was waging an inner war as surgeons removed a malignant tumor from her abdomen. Now, she's DJing in the heart of Times Square.
The Italian electronic music producer yesterday performed a rare pop-up set in celebration of her third studio album, Hard Pop, which will release on Friday via her own Solamente Records imprint. De Luca played tracks from the new album alongside a number of its vocalists.
It was a big moment for the resilient DJ, who last month revealed she underwent emergency surgery after discovering a tumor. But she made a remarkable recovery and was back on the road to continue her tour within a week.
"I underwent an 'emergency' surgery 6/7 days after the diagnosis because there was no time, within 1 or 2 months the tumor would have been removed from the organ that contained it, bringing consequences that I don't even want to write about but that you can imagine," De Luca wrote in a statement on social media, translated from Italian. "I got very lucky."

De Luca is renowned for her visceral sound, which blends grit with grace for a more nuanced approach to techno music. Hard Pop has the feel of a full-blown showcase considering the album "celebrates [her] deep founded roots in Neapolitan techno as well as her appreciation for pop's growing role within the genre," according to a press release shared with EDM.com.
"I'm so excited to bring my music to the heart of New York City with this once-in-a-lifetime event," she said prior to the show. "Times Square is a truly iconic destination, and I am honored to have the opportunity to share the music from my new album with my US fans."

Billie Eilish has just dropped the ultimate producer's playground.
Eilish's third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, has already been heralded as her most daring work to date. Released via Interscope Records, the album encapsulates the stinging, emotive energy fans have come to expect from the chart-topping artist, all while pushing the boundaries of contemporary pop music.
Now, in a move that promises to ignite a flurry of creativity among electronic music producers, Eilish has released isolated vocals tracks from the entirety of her new album.
The acapella versions of the album's tracks—produced with her brother and collaborator, FINNEAS—offer an intimate glimpse into the raw depths of each song. From the haunting "SKINNY" to the evocative "BLUE," these isolated vocals highlight the nuanced delivery and vulnerable lyricism that define Eilish's artistry.
Producers can now purchase the album pack, which includes the full scope of vocal tracks, online via here for $9.99. The offering is currently only available to US-based consumers.
Meanwhile, Eilish's world tour in support of Hit Me Hard and Soft is set to kickstart in September in Quebec.

A woman has come forward on social media with allegations of rape and sexual abuse against MRAK, the co-founder of the acclaimed Afterlife brand and one half of the electronic music duo Tale of Us.
She claims the DJ, whose real name is Carmine Conte, drugged her following Afterlife's event in Buenos Aires on April 7th, 2024. The woman says she did not consume alcohol or any substances, but lost consciousness and ultimately woke up with "blood running down [her] legs."
The accuser says she went home to Guadalajara and checked herself into an emergency room to seek treatment. Doctors there, she said, informed her to pursue legal action.
"I have all the evidence of my rape: real-time locations, photos with his entire work team, and the prescriptions from the doctor I went to, who is a witness to my sexual abuse," the woman wrote in an Instagram post.
The woman's full statement can be read below. Conte has not publicly responded to her allegations at the time of this writing.

Eight dates promise a spiritual trip through sight and sound. NEO has announced its lineup, which promises a unique experience from June 7 to July 5 and September 13 to 27, featuring artists such as The Blaze (DJ Set), Mind Against, NTO, and Ame.
Amnesia and Mathame share a common thread: mysticism, which enhances and empowers both. The nightclub, founded in the 1970s, and the Italian duo always return to their roots to thrive in the present while shaping an original and authentic future that they bring to life.
There is no dispute as to the rationale for this venture. Amnesia has opted to host NEO, Mathame’s new residency in Ibiza, within the HORIZON framework, with the goal of providing the audience with not only a melodic techno event, but also a cinematic experience complete with buildup, development, and conclusion.
The brothers draw inspiration for their compositions from classical music and nature, combining peace and euphoria to create a trip that reaches our emotional core. They plan the set for each performance while keeping the venue’s setting in mind. A festival story differs from one told in a small club. So, we’re curious: what story will they tell in an eight-date residency?
The suspense is apparent. The line-up announcement included a theme for each occasion, which shocked us. These have a profound concentration on which we will soon learn more: foundation, glory, victory, beauty, severity, mercy, understanding, and wisdom.

A lineup that will surely represent a beginning and end to the connection between melodic techno and Amnesia‘s terrace.

Over the last few years, the face of underground music has changed. More of a focus on vocals has helped many artists truly explain their music and the thought behind what they’re putting out. The resurgence in grime and the focus on the MC in electronic music has only helped to stoke this change, and at the same time, artists like Nia Archives and A Little Sound have continued to show what is possible with some serious DIY attitude and truly great vocals.
One such artist a shining example of all the above, coupling spoken word and drum and bass is Eve Piper aka Vispera. Already touring internationally with the likes of Phase Records and working with Sofa Sound in the UK, the young MC really sets the bar high. Showing exactly how commitment to the craft and a clear vision for your own future can coexist harmoniously to lay the groundwork for a lengthy career as a touring artist.
This year is no different for Eve; with a debut EP set for later in 2024 and a promotional tour of some of her favourite haunts across the country. We sat down with her a few weeks back to talk about how the next 12 months are looking for this inspirational young artist.
How’s things?
Things are good. I’m in my little sister’s bedroom while she’s away at uni. I’ve hijacked it to be my little desk space. It’s been really nice.
I’ve got to start by talking to you about your Next Hype entry that you filmed whilst at Boomtown; that was such an eye-opener to the level of dedication to your success. Where does the commitment come from?
It was so much fun doing that. I think I’ve always felt very lucky that I’ve always had a very clear idea of what I wanted to do. It was just a case of that I could always feel a space in the scene and I felt an urge to fill it. It was a case of getting the confidence and the skill set to allow myself to do it. I’ve always been a big advocate of writing as a self-help tool. Every day I do “morning pages” and that really helps in manifesting and challenging myself to do the things that my younger self could only have dreamed of doing. I was quite shy when I was little.
Thank you for being so open about that. It’s certainly inspiring from a self-help point of view…
I couldn’t recommend it enough. I find it natural to get my thoughts down. Not everyone does. I feel really lucky that I can do that. It’s my way of letting myself get it all out and just get everything down- channelling it into a line really helps my head. It’s a good thing to do. I used to do it before work as well. Before you go in for the day you’re honouring your own inner voice which I think is helpful.
My interest in spoken word stemmed from a brilliant Mancunian poet called Chris Jam. He came into our year nine drama class and introduced us to the genre. It inspired me and gave me that first bit of confidence to do it.
Spoken word is often a very political genre. I grew used to the idea that if someone has a microphone in their hands they should use their voice with meaning and either to spread a message or tell us something that needs to be heard and like to maybe address imbalance or advocate for a cause or and just make use of the fact that the voice is amplified. We’re all more than aware these days of the gender-based issues and the safety of women at events but I wasn’t hearing female voices and the female experience at the raves that got me into drum and bass when I was younger. Back then I absolutely adored MCs I thought they had a wizard-like command of the space. As a poetry fan, I’d always be right at the front, transfixed by the word-play and the rhymes. It just took me a while and a bit of growing up to believe that I could have a go at it too.

It’s really important that females feel represented and have the female experience and voice heard to address the imbalance that still exists. Having something to stand for is what led me to keep pushing it and have a motive to do it. A reason other than just for myself.

Is there one aspect of performing- in terms of either the mental aspect or the physicality of the performance that you prefer over the other?
Being on stage is an electrifying feeling and there’s nothing like that energy transfer between the crowd and the performer. I feel so privileged to play a part in the scene that conjures up such intensity of feeling. Music unites us more than any other force I’ve come across. I especially love it when girls come up to me after and say they enjoyed it, or say they were happy to see a female. If I can inspire any woman to feel a bit more empowered to get their voice heard and take command of the space; I feel like I’m doing my job. I feel so super lucky to be able to perform my words at the raves. Equally, I’m happiest on my own- with my notebook. Alone. I’m a bit more introverted naturally.
Do you find yourself feeling that those two elements of performance balance and encourage one another?
100% they balance and encourage each other. I’m still learning to try and have a hold of that balance and understand it. In my first year of MCing, I told myself that I’d say yes to every opportunity to gain experience. I learned so much and I met so many amazing people, but I was doing that for multiple sets a weekend for weeks and it took it out of me and my body was showing the signs of exhaustion. I was losing my voice before my head wanted to admit it. I need a lot of alone time to recharge and it’s the only way that I can connect to my inner voice and get it all down on the page.
Nice, it feels almost like a pendulum moment. You take your time away and you come back swinging through like this.
Beautiful metaphor. Yes definitely.
You’re getting involved with labels like Sofa Sound and have been touring internationally with Phase Records; it feels like this is only the start of a well-executed master plan to affirm your place in the scene. How did those links come about?
I could only have dreamed of working with Sofa Sound. When I moved to Bristol they were “it” for me and I just love that label so much. I met Onset at the Crofters Rights’ Collective nights and I’m so grateful that he invited me to get involved with a few things since. One night I was heading back to Manchester and I luckily got a lift back with him. It was so amazing to get an insight into how it’s been for him. It was just pretty amazing for me. Then I got the call to join them in Brighton with Gusto and Freddie B hosting for Sofa Sound and DLR’s album launch Volks in Brighton.
With Phase (Records) I couldn’t say enough about Gifta and Phase. She’s been really life-changing for me. She’s such an amazing boss. Such an amazing label owner. Getting mentored by Hospital Records she’s dripped down all everything she’s learned, all the insight she has. All of that advice is passed on to the residents. She puts so much energy into bringing everyone up individually to make the brand stronger. She encourages people to go and do their own thing and she’s just brilliant to work with. She’s been an amazing friend, and an inspiration and has given me some great opportunities.
What’s scoped for the next few months?
I’ve got quite a lot of sets coming up before summer and festival seasons looking exciting. Off the back of that I’m going to tour my first solo project; a four track EP I’m releasing towards the end of the year.
How did the EP come about?
The EP is a modern retelling of the story of the fall of man. The biblical story of the original sin; Adam and Eve. Eve eating the apple and being expelled from the Garden of Eden. I wanted to tell the story from a modern perspective. Eve’s experience of coercion to eat the apple by the snake and disobedience from the path of what she’s supposed to do. I wanted to flip it as a metaphor. The Adam and Eve story serves to blame women for man’s fall from paradise. It frames women as weak, untrustworthy and sinful and that justifies the subjugation of women in the eyes of the church and therefore society. I wanted to try and reframe it presenting the act of disobedience as a rejection of patriarchal rule and blind coercion.
The ejection from Eden is an excel from that control and a bit of an eye-opening allegory into being a female in the scene. The danger and the abuse that can happen behind everything in this male-dominated scene. It’s a story that I tell over different tracks and each producer for each track is from a different city.
I’m working with some amazing producers who are providing the music for it, I chose them because I love all of their individual sounds, they’re very distinctive. It goes from more of an old school organic sound to a jungle vibe and some dark techy aggression at the other end. I’d say that’s the feeling and sound that these producers achieve so well. It’s what made me want to partner with them to tell elements of the Eve story.
Are the tracks the same genre?
Yes, they’re all drum and bass with me telling the story. I will MC with elements of spoken word delivery.
Is production something you want to do in the future?
I definitely want to learn more about vocal production and learn more about how to record myself properly. Just be more independent as a recording artist because that’s been a learning curve for me. I’d love to learn to produce my own vocals. I’m very aware that I’ve got a lot of friends who are amazing at production and I thought it might be better to focus my attention on getting better at what I do and providing that for now. I really want to learn about working in the studio and getting better at processing vocals and understanding the process of that more- that’s a skill that I’m trying to improve upon.
I’m so lucky to have some friends who are unreal producers and I feel that as my role was more with words. It makes more sense to collaborate with these people to create something for what’s right now in my career but it’s definitely something to be I’d like to do in the future. As a kid, I played piano and learnt a little bit of production by doing it at AS level. For now, I think my role is to provide the words and be an MC.
How have you found the process of the EP, from conception to its finalising moments? Is there something that you will take away from the project?
Definitely, its been a learning curve. These things take longer than you think- they always do. There’s been a lot of travelling and I love that. I wanted to tour with different people in different cities where I’ve been trying to build a network and the cities the producers on the release are from too. I had more intentions with it other than just putting an EP out. I wanted it to form part of a bigger plan and have something where the music to be made with the idea in mind that it’s telling the story, that it’s going to have it’s chance to connect with the city in which it was made.
Musically what sounds or producers have inspired the project?
It has been different across the board. From some old school hailing from Bristol and then the London side is a lot more aggressive. Obviously, with different producers, it could be a challenge for the EP to sound cohesive as a whole, but because of the narrative arc that links it together; I think it works.
Where are you bringing the tour?
Bristol is with the Full Spectrum crew. I was so grateful when Ffi reached out and that when I told her my plan, she was onboard. Then in Birmingham, I’m working with Sisterhood at The Dark Horse. There are also dates in Manchester and London too. I’ve got some wicked DJs I love to support on the dates. Every night of the tour is going to have different people playing different sounds, which is really exciting.
You’re seen to work closely with the Full Spectrum and Sisterhood collectives, it feels like community is important to you…
Community is super important to me. I’d like to say I 100% agree with that. For everyone who’s on this graft, trying to make it as an artist and establish themselves; it’s easy to get in your own heads. You’ve got a lot of ego in the scene but we all rely on each other. We’re all putting energy into it. We’re all working together. That’s what makes it a scene. That’s what makes so many opportunities. You take out of it and give energy back.
We survive by supporting each other and putting everything into it. I’ve seen so many amazing collectives like Sisterhood where everyone wants to bring each other up and it’s so healthy and sustainable. They’re great at providing opportunities for people who have gone without. Providing that representation to bring more of what is needed and of what’s lacking in the scene helps it be more diverse, varied and representative than it is. I feel very honoured to be involved with brands that are at the forefront of their mission and especially to be working with them for this tour and everything that the EP represents.
What about inspiration? Where does that come from for you in terms of being an MC?
For being an MC, it was the Manchester MCs that I grew up going to watch. LEVELS, Strategy, Sparks, Chunky, DRS and Fox. I was taken in by watching them and that’s what made me think; I want to do that.
You are spoilt up there!
This city is truly blessed when it comes to live MCs and lyricists and Manchester’s got such a rich history of music. But, for me, I’m most grateful for their stage presence and the way they used their accents. That’s what inspired me with the MC side then when I moved to Bristol that’s what inspired me musically 100%. I feel very grateful to have lived in both cities and in terms of writing for myself that works well.

I prefer to have a theme or a prompt. If I’m working with a producer, I’ll always say “What were you picturing in your head when you made this, what was it about for you?” Then I try and put the words to that. If you’re creating something together, I find it harder to write if they just say “Do whatever you want”.

With mine and Artillery’s track “UV Rage” he was so articulate about his thoughts when he had been creating the idea for the track. It’s about mental health struggles and trying to suppress rage and anger. I already had written something about rage and this idea of inner turmoil so having that conversation led to a really strong idea that we were both fully behind.
Your performances are much more of a connected story than a hosting style, would you agree?
Hosting definitely didn’t come naturally to me. I had to really learn how to do that, I’ve never been the loud person in the room with new people. That’s why I wanted to do as many sets as possible, to get as much practice and to learn how to do it. I’ve written my bars and I often like to have a bit of a sense of narrative to them and I could do them but at the end of the day if you’re MC it’s your job to be that connection between the crowd and the DJ.
How do you find representing a part of the new wave of female MCs?
Super proud. There are so many strong women coming through right now on the new wave. Massive salute and respect to the originals like Chickaboo. Massive inspiration of mine. OneDa is killing it at the moment with the Pussy Power EP. On the new wave there are so many I could shout out. I’m going to say big ups to Ekstatic as well. She’s so talented and so professional and so creative and so unique. Someone who should have the microphone as well as being a sick DJ. Give us a chance!

Savvy B is killing it, Charlie Tee’s MC. Foxi in Manchester, Kemsey, Bee Rosebud. Abi Nyxx has inspired me for a long time. Mamba.exe. Kaz too. Pablo is a sick vocalist as well! Too many to mention! Big up to brands like Sisterhood and Sexy Lady Massive as well for bringing through these acts and giving them the opportunity.
Are there some producers you’d want to work with in the future?
Collaborating with people is the best part of being a drum and bass MC. I’ll get in the studio with anyone and see where it leads. The creative process is everything and I love seeing how different producers work and finding a way to connect into their workflow creatively. That’s often led to some really good friendships for me as well.
Getting something in the works with a big name would obviously be an amazing opportunity but honestly, if anyone asks me to do vocals for their tune it’s a huge honour. I’d try to make it happen. I remember thinking before “Wouldn’t it be amazing if producers wanted to make tunes with me” and now I’m at the point where I can tell people want to work with me. There’s a bit of a wait cause I’ve got projects to work on, apologies to anyone waiting but I couldn’t ask for more at the moment.
If you did have to chuck one big name in there…
Visages.
Dare we ask about 2025?
If all goes to plan I could still be doing what I do and still hopefully getting to host for loads of sick nights across the country with different brands. I’ve got a similar idea to this year with another release in mind, but it should be bigger and better.

Roland has announced the Detroit School of Arts (DSA) Electronic Music Education Program, an innovative learning model developed in conjunction with Detroit’s creative powerhouses Submerge and Underground Music Academy, will be renewed for a second year courtesy of Paxahau, in partnership with the Detroit Techno Foundation. This electronic music education program, which serves high school-level students in the greater Detroit area, has thrived in its first year as a pilot thanks to dedicated support from DSA, Detroit’s music community, and guidance from Roland on the program’s strategic proposal, curriculum, equipment, and organization.
Roland’s connection with the Detroit music scene runs deep, supplying tools that have spawned new musical frontiers in the hands of the city’s visionary creative community, with the brand’s iconic synthesizer and drum machines playing a pivotal role in shaping the vast and historic musical landscape. While filming and producing the critically acclaimed mini-documentary “Somewhere in Detroit,” which showcases 30+ years of the city’s creative impact, Roland launched the Detroit School of Arts Electronic Music Education Pilot Program in September of 2023.
Recognizing a gap in contemporary electronic music education engagement within schools, the curricular model for the program offers a diverse array of skill-building courses, encompassing DJing, beatmaking, music production, sound design, and industry studies. These courses provide students with the foundational knowledge to pursue further music studies or embark on their own careers. Place-based lessons also provide students with a profound understanding of the legacy and cultural impact of local producers and DJs on the global music landscape.
Paxahau, the renowned Detroit-based production company, is funding the program’s continuation, welcoming a new intake of students for the ‘24-’25 school year. Specializing in event management, booking, and promotion since the early days of Detroit’s underground party scene, Paxahau is known as the driving force behind Detroit’s iconic Movement Music Festival, one of the longest-running dance music events in the world.
“As a music teacher, having support and resources to tap into my student’s creativity and musical tastes has been a beautiful experience. I’m so proud of this cohort and all they were able to accomplish in this first year of the pilot program, I know it’s only up from here!” said Maritza Figueroa-Garibay, Director of Orchestras and Electronic Music for Detroit School of Arts.
“Learning how to make my own music electronically was amazing and so exciting, especially for how easy it was. I’m glad that DSA finally has a program that lets students express themselves musically, but with electronics!” said Mariessa Nelson, a current student at Detroit School of Arts.
“This program is the first of its kind for a school and instrument manufacturer. We’ve developed a progressive educational model that brings together schools and creative communities with Roland instruments to create transformative classroom experiences. Working closely with Maritza Figueroa-Garibay and members of Submerge and Underground Music Academy, we created an initiative that not only advances student learning but also provides critical insights into scalable educational models, the evolving needs of music creators, and informs Roland’s product R&D strategies,” said Matthew Chicoine, Roland’s global strategic product marketing manager.

From the cacophonous surrounds of London to the sea stacks of Orkney, via the abandoned military facilities of the Suffolk coast and the watery expanses of the Blackwater Estuary in Essex, from the quarries and neolithic sites of Snowdonia and the wide open skies of Norfolk to the hubbub of Nairobi and Berlin, the streets of Kyiv and the windblown wilds of Antarctica – music is everywhere. You just need to know or learn how to listen.
Ears To The Ground: Adventures in Field Recording and Electronic Music explores how electronic music producers and sound artists use field recordings and samples to document their environments. Author Ben Murphy takes you on a journey to discover how field recordings can create context, emotion, atmosphere, humour and meaning – and examine the most pressing topics of our times.
Composed of extensive interviews with music producers, the book shows how field recordings have become a vital way of understanding, celebrating and interrogating the landscape and the places we live. The book features interviews with Leafcutter John, KMRU, Ultramarine, Kate Carr, Erland Cooper, Proc Fiskal, Flora Yin-Wong, Langham Research Centre, Claire Guerin, Toshiya Tsunoda, Lawrence English, Heinali, Oliver Ho, Matthew Herbert, Matmos, Scanner, Felicia Atkinson and many more.
On its journey, the book takes in abandoned military test sites, remote bird colonies, estuaries, cities, coastlines, old quarries, neolithic burial grounds, scientific research centres and docklands, and ventures between Orkney, Edinburgh and Cork to Norfolk, Kent and Snowdonia, before heading to Kenya, Ukraine, Japan and Antarctica

Reinier Zonneveld is one of the most famous names in electronic music around the world. He holds the Guinness World Record for the longest live electronic music set and is one of the Netherlands’ biggest music exports.
The Dutchman will go down in history as one of the few artists to ever host his own event in his own country this summer.
This year’s R² event has a carefully chosen lineup that shows how influential Zonneveld has been. It includes legendary acts that are rarely seen on event lineups.
Big names from around the world like Kobosil, Klangkuenstler, Paul Elstak, and Eli Brown are among the first acts to be revealed. Expect even more names as over fifty of the biggest names in dance music today are on the bill.
Reinier Zonneveld Presents: R² will have seven shows put on by well-known music venues, labels, and clubs that have been important to Reinier Zonneveld’s long and successful career. Some of the shows that will be there are STOOR, Unreal, Amnesia Ibiza’s Pyramid, Kompass Klub, and Filth on Acid.

AI in a live music festival
The festival will have an amazing lineup of artists for all tastes, and it will also be a big moment in the history of electronic music when R², a cutting-edge AI model based on Reinier Zonneveld’s huge discography and live sets from over a decade, makes its debut. Reinier Zonneveld will be the first artist to use his custom-made AI live music project, R², in a live electronic music set. This will be a one-of-a-kind show where a person and a computer play music back-to-back.
This amazing AI model was specially made to create tracks on its own during the live show, using loops, samples, and other live elements that work perfectly with Reinier’s improvised music on stage.
This project goes against the usual rules of the music business and adds a whole new layer to the art form. Reinier’s innovative method not only uses new technologies, but it also brings life back to live music by letting the artist and the AI model work together in a new and exciting way.

R² festival: when and where
Reinier Zonneveld Presents: R² will take over the Spaarnwoude on August 17. This will be the official launch of the game-changing R² technology and a full line-up of big names in electronic music.
The early bird ticket pre-registration starts on May 22 at 5:22 p.m. On May 24, tickets will be sold normally.

We’re bringing you the most delicious four-tracker in Organic House at the moment.
It is quite accurate of you to believe we’re over the moon with this one. Beloved producer Fulltone has returned to Lee Burridge’s cloud-shaped All Day I Dream imprint, this time with a four-track-long offering, the Alba EP. This record promises a voyage into the heart of those genres whose only way of language is love: Organic and Melodic House.
Although recalling influences from a handful of artists as spread out across the spectrum as Alan Parsons and Nirvana, the most evident products of the Egyptian powerhouse come from delicately chosen leads, paired with unique textures and tasty percussion rolls. With this EP, Fulltone nears 15 pieces signed to ADID alone. Neat.
The Alba EP came to be from waves of inspiration, according to the artist behind it. “Sometimes you catch a fish immediately, sometimes it takes hours or days, but you won’t catch any fish unless you go to the sea with a fishing line“, he says. “In my case, the sea is my studio and the fishing line is my instruments“. And far from only being a beautifully written screen for the release, there are tons of instances in which you can testify the creative, even vanguardist way of writing music, is more present than ever before.
The Alba EP
Four tracks constitute the latest ADID release — and Fulltone’s most recent as well. Each track has something special to it, some venture onto a fine line between genres, and some implement core sounds and grooves.
Fulltone – Alba EP Tracklist
Alba Meine Liebe Make Believe featuring Shyam P Follow The Light ‘Alba’
With the use of power chords, soft, water-droplet-resembling plucks, percussion, and tons of delay spaces, the EP kicks off its majesty with the title track. Mysterious and groovy, this one sets the tone (the fulltone?) of the tracks ahead. Its energy is also quite tame compared to the others, so it’s a good thing to have it opening the release.
‘Meine Liebe’
My favourite out of the singles. When I first pressed play on this one my mind immediately went, “OH I’VE HEARD THIS BEFORE“. Indeed, I had. I still can’t recall if it was a Lee Burridge set, or someone like Roy Rosenfeld who I’ve been listening too at work, but my mind truly remembered. The fast-paced arpeggios are a vibe, they remind me of Fulltone’s 2021 ADID EP, Love in Space. Also, I cannot explain it, but the low melody gave me flashbacks of the Pink Panther soundtracks? I can’t explain it, but trust me, it makes sense.
‘Make Believe’
The vocal track of the EP is ‘Make Believe’. Quite resemblant of Deep House, while also blending in shades of Melodic House, and incorporating the organic nature of, well, Organic House, this piece plays a very convincing role of a Summer-inspired singalong. Sung by Shyram P, you’ll see the lyrics are heartfelt, and they fit the instrumental like a glove.
‘Follow The Light’
After the daring composition that was ‘Make Believe’, the closing track, ‘Follow The Light’, feels much more like a typical ADID tune. Soft percussion in gigantic amounts, groovy chords, cut vocal loops, tension and release, and, to be honest, the energy needed to close your eyes and imagine Lee himself vibing to it. What a belter, and what a closer!

You've heard of totems commemorating spiritual and sexual journeys—or just a dank meme—but have you ever encountered one that brought you right back to your childhood?
Without the exuberant camaraderie of rave culture, the pandemic forced onto us a bleak barrage of virtual experiences and "immersive" streams. At that elusive intersection in 2024 is the "Super Nintotem," an interactive totem taking the electronic dance music community by storm.
Part totem pole, part gaming hub, the traveling "Super Nintotem" is providing a fresh entertainment experience at EDM festivals. The tricked-out totem lets you play classic Nintendo games on a console while in the crowd.
Super Nintotem (0:24) The totem debuted in 2023 at EDC Las Vegas, its creator, Brian Tai, tells EDM.com. But the idea was hatched a decade earlier at the festival's mainstage, where he says he vividly remembers talking to a friend about how cool it would be to somehow fire up a game while in the crowd.
Technology caught up along the way, so he decided to go for it. But how exactly does this portable nostalgia machine run?
Tai says lugging the "Super Nintotem" around isn't easy. It's heavy and comes with many fragile components, and he can't move or dance as freely as his fellow ravers.
"It's designed from the ground up to be modular and packable for flying," Tai explains. "A gaming system on a desk is pretty easy. A gaming system on a pole is a bit trickier. It uses a 3-piece PVC pole system that fits in a standard suitcase. All of the mounts and connectors are custom-designed and 3D-printed."
"Thin panel portable screens have come a long way and are reasonably power efficient," he continues. "Everything is powered by large lithium batteries, and I need to carry several in my CamelBak to last the night. It's been an iterative process over the last year. The screen got bigger. A wheelable base was created to help with transportation. Moved to cordless controllers to prevent randoms from clotheslining themselves while cutting through the crowd. A light-up amnesty warp pipe was put up top to help with 360-degree visibility."
The "Super Nintotem" totem.Brian Tai
The "Super Nintotem" isn't just a distraction—it's a fusion of experience, a postmodern Mario mashup where power-ups are found in kindred spirits and the ultimate victory is the shared joy of classic gaming under the electric sky.
However, while totems are an undeniable mainspring of stateside rave culture, many, especially overseas, find them unnecessary and disruptive. Tai wants to show those detractors that totems hold value in places where DJs often numb crowds into head-bobbing hypnosis.
"Totems serve a practical purpose of helping your friends find each other in a sea of 170,000 people at night," he says. "But beyond that, they’re an expression of creativity, humor and joy. God knows how many times I've looked to my side and seen someone’s totem that caused me to laugh and smile. They are a form of communication and interaction. Events are not just insular strangers standing next to each other listening to music on their own."
However you may feel about totems, there's no denying the emotional response elicited by the "Super Nintotem." Tai over the weekend brought it back to EDC, one of the world's most popular EDM festivals, where over 500 people played games on it. And the reactions were all the same: pure, unfiltered bliss.
View the original article to see embedded media.
As he's spent more time with it, Tai has realized it accomplishes a number of benevolent goals despite requiring little from participants: inclusion, participation, immediacy, a form of gifting.
The totem's cornerstone, however, is its ability to connect people through shared experience—both past and present.
"So much of social media is me me me," Tai says. "Everything posted on the supernintotem account is focused on the players, none of the posts are about the totem or the people running it. It’s a snapshot frozen in time, with lots of really happy people."

It’s been a whirlwind week for 1991. The London-based DJ and producer released his latest track ‘Cyclone’ ft. Mugatu on Thursday and by Saturday, was closing out Cosmic Meadows at EDC Las Vegas with the Drum and Bass collective WORSHIP. If 1991 was considered an emerging artist before, it’s safe to say he’s now fully launched.
‘Cyclone’ exemplifies 1991’s distinctive style, blending high-energy rhythms with intricate soundscapes, a hallmark that has earned him a dedicated following. A ground shaking bass line and techy breaks balance the atmospheric vocals of the mysterious Mugatu. As far as I can tell, he’s not Will Ferrell’s character from Zoolander but there’s not much of an Internet trail.
However, we do know who 1991 is and that’s Frederick Webb, who appeared on the scene in 2016. Initially producing music under a different alias, he encountered issues with record labels, resulting in a backlog of unreleased tracks for several years. Eventually, he shared his music with the label Skankandbass, which forwarded it to Chase & Status. They were instantly impressed and played a pivotal role in supporting his career as 1991.
Following his February release ‘Worlds Apart’ with Goodboys and the spring WORSHIP Tour with Sub Focus, Dimension and Culture Shock, 1991 is whipping up a cyclone of energy as he kicks off festival season.
