It’s been a rather tricky year for Burning Man. It recently reported that it failed to sell out for the first time in over a decade as ticker holders took major losses to unload the unwanted passes. In an effort to boost numbers, organizers opened up last-minute ticket sales to the general public, which doesn’t require pre-registration. Ahead of the event in the Black Rock Desert, there have been a few rule changes regarding its future events, all in an effort to salvage attendance.
Burning Man sent an email to all the leaders of the festival’s music camps and owners of the iconic ‘mutant vehicles‘ about a policy change on August 10th. In prior years, guidelines stated that the lineups for the various stages were announced just a week before the first day of performances. That’s because the music lineup is a perk for people going, not THE reason to go. The ethos of Burning Man is to attract people who share the ethos and the vibe of the event, not just people who want to see certain DJs. This year, however, the organizers have allowed the lineups to be revealed two weeks before the festival starts on August 25th.
Announcing the lineups much earlier allows the possibility for fans to come to Burning Man for the artists. This detracts from the journey of self-expression and community the event has come to offer. Artists like Carl Cox and Rufus Du Sol are among those who will be performing at this year’s event and are equally names that would look at home on the mainstage of any major festival.
It will be very interesting to see if this new policy will be popular with fans and how it might affect ticket sales and the makeup of attendees. It’s still unclear why tickets aren’t sold out as they usually are. Last year’s running was marred by extreme weather, which may be a cause for a decline in interest. Tickets are still available for this year’s Burning Man, which you can purchase here.

September 2024 sees the release of the six-disc/six-DJ ‘In Search Of Sunrise 20’.  At the rate of one a week, Black Hole Recordings will be unveiling the DJs chosen for this task. The first is Solarstone – an artist for whom the first natural question might be ‘how is this only happening now ?!!!’ As sure a fit for ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ as anyone, and an artist/producer for whom the term ‘Balearic Trance’ might very well have been coined, we dig into Solarstone’s mix with Richard Mowatt below …
What was the first ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ album you heard or bought, Rich? “That was Vol.3 – the one with Solarstone ‘Solarcoaster’ on it. I remember buying the CD! It’s funny how music can be autobiographical in that way.”
It truly is! Now, looking back across their tracklists, what would you say is your all-time favourite track that’s been compiled onto an ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ album?“Without a doubt that would Andain ‘Summer Calling’ (Josh Gabriel Mix) – it precedes ‘Solarcoaster’ on Vol. 3. I love that track so much. I’ve toyed with the idea of remixing it, but I know that whatever I did could not touch the perfection of Josh’s version, so the exercise would be kind of pointless!”
The music of ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ is perhaps renowned for having less of a ‘sound’ and more a ‘feel’. How would you encapsulate that feel in three words? “I think it is both a ‘feel’ an also a ‘sound’. So for me that’d be: ‘Balearic progressive trance’.”
Fair enough! Is there a track on your mix that summarises that best? “It’s the whole thing. That’s the whole point of it, at least that’s how I feel. Setting a mood and letting it flow. Having said that, the Foxhill track captures the sunrise beautifully. Even the title ‘When the Morning Comes’ is perfect. I think Sam Foxhill is a really gifted producer.”
‘In Search Of Sunrise’ mixes are all about flow. How did you approach yours? “I knew how I wanted this to sound from day one. Keeping the Balearic vibe throughout, progressive sounds, a gentle & natural slow build. I told the artists what the tracks were for, and they produced tracks perfectly for it. Anyone who knows the early ISOS albums understands my intention with this mix. But the flow takes some crafting, you need to step back from the mechanics of the mix from time to time – listen to the whole thing in the car, for example. When I listened to the first bounce of the mix, there was one track that had been signed & edited specifically for this album but then really stood out as not fitting. It was too ‘uplifting’ and knocked the flow off-course. This is something that usually happens with a compilation, and it can be very frustrating for the artist who made the track! I was dreading telling them that I had to remove it. The Solarcoaster remix by Aquarius then materialised in a very serendipitous way on the day I realised that I needed one more track. Polish 18-year-old producer Aquarius (who has released several times on my labels) sent me a demo of his Solarcoaster remix out of the blue – and it fitted perfectly in the space left by the other track, even in terms of BPM and key. That sounds like a huge coincidence, but it has actually happened several times before! By the way, there was a happy ending with the cut track – I offered it to a DJ mixing one of the other discs, and they loved it and included it. I was very relieved!”

Are there any exclusives, premieres, or purpose-built tracks on the Solarstone mix? “Yes – all of them! I love my compilations to consist of brand-new music. Primarily this album needed to be new music from interesting artists designed for an ISOS album. I don’t think a mix like this should be an exercise in self-promotion, but people do expect a few of my own tracks to be on there, either new tracks or remixes from my back catalogue. They have to fit naturally though, not be shoe-horned in. On this one they are the Solarcoaster remix, the William Byrne remix of ‘When I Dream’ (William made the remix about a year earlier and I was saving it for a special occasion) &  ‘Release’ which closes my mix. It’s one from 2003 that I always felt would have worked perfectly on an ISOS compilation, so I dug out the original stems and made a slightly different version for this project. Sean Tyas & Enigma state kindly made an alternative version of their brilliant track ‘Lately’ for this album – the fabulous ‘Azure Mix’. The very first track written specifically for the album was the wonderful ‘Majesty’ by Singapore’s Effen, the feel of that track was always going to be the ‘peak’ of the mix – just before the ramp down towards the end.”
Nice! Now was there one ISOS-oriented artist that you were particularly keen to have on your disc? “Absolutely – that would be Orkidea! He has mixed a previous edition of ISOS & his music often has a Balearic vibe. ‘Dance Of Life’ is vintage Orkidea, a really brilliant track.”
You yourself are the owner of a compilation series that has reached ten outings. What’s the secret to longevity when creating a series? “I suppose it is having faith in a concept and being consistent – releasing at the same time each year. Annoyingly we missed a year with the Pure Trance series, due to the pandemic. This year, when Arny from Black Hole asked me to compile a disc for this special edition, I knew that because of the amount of work involved (& other ongoing projects) it would be impossible for me to also mix a new Pure Trance compilation, so I chose to do In Search of Sunrise. Pure Trance Vol. 11 will happen in 2025 instead.”
A noble sacrifice! So, tackling the elephant in the room, musically, Solarstone would seem like the most natural of fits for ‘In Search Of Sunrise’. Is ‘Pure Trance’ what’s kept you away from ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ for so long !? “It is!! I’ve discussed it several times with Arny, but for the last few years it was because I couldn’t commit to doing an ISOS alongside a Pure Trance album as well. I’m really pleased that it has finally happened.”
What’s the best Sunrise you’ve ever found !? “Paula, my wife and I were in Costa Rica recently and we saw some good ones there from a little cabin high up in the jungle. Not that we stayed up all night to see them – we were woken each morning by the sun streaming through the window. Generally, having two kids, I prefer not to be woken up in the morning, thanks very much.”

American audio equipment and software manufacturer, Sonos has been embroiled in a consumer revolt since it released a new app May 7th. This new app had been hyped in the press and was going to make product setup easier and greatly improve the user experience. However, when the app was actually released, it was, and somewhat remains, a disaster. Since the new app was released, CEO Patrick Spence has issued a formal apology and announced in August that the company would be delaying the launch of two products “until our app experience meets the level of quality that we, our customers, and our partners expect from Sonos”.
But one thing is for sure: if you want the old Sonos app back, it’s not coming. In a Reddit AMA response posted Tuesday, Sonos CEO Spence says that he was hopeful “until very recently” that the company could rerelease the app — But after extensive testing, rereleasing the old app would allegedly make things worse. “The trick of course is that Sonos is not just the mobile app, but software that runs on your speakers and in the cloud too. In the months since the new mobile app launched we’ve been updating the software that runs on our speakers and in the cloud to the point where today S2 is less reliable & less stable than what you remember“, he said.
Although the old app is dead in the water, Spence assured folks that fixing the current app “remains my #1 priority“.

The change of seasons from summer to autumn marks a thrilling time for the electronic dance music community ahead of the annual return of ADE. The iconic Amsterdam Dance Event draws artists, fans and industry professionals from across the globe as it takes over the city with hundreds of events.
Now, organizers have unveiled a series of opening party series to usher in this year's summit, which is scheduled for October 16-20. The first will take place at one of Amsterdam's most iconic landmarks, the Van Gogh Museum, where a stripped-back performance by Dutch singer-songwriter Eefje de Visser will take place.
The next event takes a bold approach, blending the new with the old through technology, art and classical music. Audiovisual creative Nick Verstand and Cello Octet Amsterdam have teamed up to design an innovative show, "COCON II," crafted specially for ADE wherein musicians engage with eight robotic arms to create light shapes. This unique event will take place at the Door Open Space warehouse.
The next ADE opening party fuses jazz and techno for a genre-bending experience at Bimhuis. Greetje Bijma, a renowned free jazz singer, will collaborate with electronic artist Oceanic to perform a daring set. Then, London-based producer LUXE will play a live show meshing electronic and classical music, showcasing unique interplay between these disparate genres.
Lastly, Amsterdam's Melkweg venue is set to host a tribute to one of the world's most influential hip-hop producers, the late J Dilla. The Metropole Orkest and composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson will perform their interpretation of Dilla's works through a new lens to celebrate his 50-year legacy.

2 months ago we covered Diplo’s amazing new home in Jamaica. He built a tropical oasis in the middle of the jungle. The home has inspired so many of his records and projects. Now, he is ready to share the inspiration of the home for everyone to enjoy.
He originally made the home for his 18 children to get away. He attributes Jamaica for giving him so much inspiration for dancehall and beyond. He has rescued horses and planted sweet potatoes, strawberries, kale, and pineapples around the grounds. Diplo undertook the ambitious project by first buying 50 acres of land.
He then assembled an inspired team of artists to help bring his vision to life over the next 10 years. The years of work have resulted in an indoor-outdoor concrete villa clinging to the lush hillside. Bridges, trellises, and breezeways connect the space, allowing the jungle to weave into the home as if one.
He wants the home to be a retreat for all creatives from music to art. It will serve as a haven, epicenter, and sanctuary for creativity. Solar panels power the home as well. Pompey is open for bookings here. Diplo had this to say:

A landmark bill preventing the use of artists' images, voices and likenesses without consent has been passed by the Illinois State Senate.
HB 4875, signed into law by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, formally enacts amendments to the state's Right of Publicity Act, which passed back in 1999 to require written consent for the use of an artist's likeness for commercial purposes. The revamped bill allows musicians, record labels and other rightsholders to sue parties using AI to generate and disseminate unauthorized digital replicas.
The bill defines "digital replica" as a "newly-created, electronic representation of the identity of an actual individual created using a computer, algorithm, software, tool, artificial intelligence, or other technology that is fixed in a sound recording or audiovisual work in which that individual did not actually perform or appear."
Senator Mary Edly-Allen advanced HB 4875, which had received bipartisan support since its introduction to the Illinois State Senate.
"In the last few years, we have seen an explosion of AI tools and AI-generated content, often created and distributed without authorization," Edly-Allen said in a press release issued by her office. "While AI is a powerful tool with the potential to do much good, guardrails are necessary to protect artists and the general public."
The scourge of AI-powered deepfake technology has emerged as the music industry's most explosive flashpoint, raising urgent questions and fears surrounding authenticity. Deepfakes pose significant, existential challenges for musicians, who are rightly concerned about the potential for their work, voices and identities to be exploited and repackaged in misleading ways.
"As an indie artist, every song I make is a piece of my soul," added Dani Deahl, a DJ, dance music producer and Chicago Chapter Recording Academy trustee, who testified in the case. "House Bill 4875 is not just legislation—it's a shield protecting that soul from being mimicked and monetized by unauthorized AI. It guarantees that our identities remain uniquely our own. This law ensures that as technology advances, it does so with respect for our rights and our very essence as creators."
The legislation is just the tip of the iceberg with regard to AI-related protections for artists, as the swift proliferation of unethical deepfake tech has led to swelling support beyond the state level. Led by Delaware Senator Chris Coons, a group of Congress members in July introduced the NO FAKES Act, which seeks to establish federal guardrails "to protect the image, voice, and visual likeness of individuals" from unfair use.
The United States Senate Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Intellectual Property held a hearing on Tuesday, April 30th titled "The NO FAKES Act: Protecting Americans from Unauthorized Digital Replicas."
"This bill would protect people from having their images, voices, or likenesses used to create digital replicas that say or do things they never agreed to or would never say," Coons said in his testimony at the time, per Tech Policy Press. "The bill accomplishes this broad goal in two ways: by holding individuals and companies liable if they produce an unauthorized digital replica of an individual's voice image or likeness and by holding platforms liable if they host or distribute an unauthorized digital replica if the platform knows the person depicted did not authorize it."
HB 4875 was officially signed into Illinois law August 9th, 2024 and will be enacted January 1st, 2025.

It's been a long, quiet year for fans of GRiZ, but those attending Burning Man will see that his creative flame has far from extinguished.
Beloved for his funk-infused dubstep and high-energy live shows, GRiZ in June 2023 announced an indefinite hiatus from music, citing a desire to travel and spend more time with loved ones.
"Life is really good, and often I make myself too busy to see just where I am and how far the project has come," he said at the time. "I'm following my gut instincts so for now, I’m not going to put a hard time limit length on the break... I'm excited to take time to travel, find fresh inspiration, write music and to be in a new headspace."
But the hush has been suddenly, dramatically shattered with the news that GRiZ will be gracing the hallowed grounds of Burning Man's beloved Camp Questionmark this year. It's a big moment for the Rainbow Brain producer, who has remained steadfastly out of the public eye since announcing his hiatus.
The lineup revealed this week via Camp Questionmark's Instagram page in a post that has since been deleted, but not before the sleuths at GRiZ's official subreddit captured a screenshot. According to the flier, which you can view below, GRiZ is scheduled to appear on Friday, August 30th as part of a slate that also features Diplo and Louis The Child. Other notable artists to perform throughout the week include What So Not, Maddy O'Neal, Equanimous and FLY.
Camp Questionmark's official website now features a countdown that's scheduled to end on the afternoon of Sunday, August 25th.

Behind every superstar is a story of humble beginnings, and for some of the biggest names in EDM, their journey to stardom started with regular jobs like everyone else. From grocery stores to classrooms, these six EDM DJs hustled in everyday professions before making it big on the global stage. Here’s a look at their surprising backgrounds and the paths they took to become some of the most influential figures in electronic music.
1) Calvin Harris: Grocery Store Worker
Before topping charts with hits like ‘Summer’ and ‘Feel So Close’, Calvin Harris was stocking shelves and scanning groceries. The Scottish DJ, born Adam Richard Wiles, worked in a local grocery store during his early years, earning just enough to scrape by while he continued to work on his music. Harris would spend his nights honing his production skills and uploading tracks to MySpace, which eventually led to his breakthrough. Today, Calvin Harris is a global phenomenon, with multiple Grammy Awards and residencies in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t always glitz and glamor—he started out like many of us, bagging groceries for minimum wage.
2) Steve Aoki: Waiter
Steve Aoki, known for his high-energy performances and crowd-surfing antics, wasn’t always at the center of the EDM universe. Before headlining festivals and running his own record label, Dim Mak, Aoki worked as a waiter in Los Angeles. Juggling his job with his passion for music, he put in hours at the restaurant to make ends meet. Aoki‘s experience as a waiter likely helped him develop the strong work ethic that propelled him to success. His persistence paid off, and he eventually went on to become one of the most prominent DJs in the world, known for collaborations with artists like BTS and Kid Cudi.
3) Diplo: School Teacher
Long before Diplo was playing packed venues and producing tracks for artists like Beyoncé and Major Lazer, he was teaching history to middle school students. The Grammy-winning producer, whose real name is Thomas Wesley Pentz, worked as a school teacher in Philadelphia. While teaching, Diplo was also dabbling in DJing and producing music on the side. Eventually, his passion for music won out, and he left the classroom behind to focus on his career full-time. Despite the career change, Diplo has often spoken fondly of his time as a teacher, crediting the experience with helping him develop patience and creativity, both of which have served him well in his music career.
4) John Summit: Accountant
John Summit, one of the rising stars in the house and techno scene, didn’t always have his sights set on DJing. Before his music took off, Summit worked as an accountant in Chicago. His nine-to-five job involved balancing books and crunching numbers, but his passion for music never waned. After spending his weekends performing at local clubs and producing tracks, Summit decided to take a leap of faith and focus on his music career full-time. That decision paid off, as he quickly rose through the ranks with chart-topping tracks like ‘Deep End’, earning him a spot among the industry’s elite.
5) Kaskade: Mormon Missionary
Before becoming one of the most respected names in electronic music, Kaskade, born Ryan Raddon, lived a very different life. He spent two years as a Mormon missionary in Japan, spreading the teachings of his faith. Kaskade‘s experience abroad helped shape his worldview and build his discipline, traits that have been instrumental in his music career. Upon returning to the United States, he pursued his passion for DJing and producing, eventually becoming a staple in the EDM scene. Known for his melodic sound and deep emotional connection to his music, Kaskade has since won multiple awards and performed at some of the world’s biggest music festivals.
6) deadmau5: Factory Worker
Joel Zimmerman, better known as deadmau5, wasn’t always performing in front of massive LED screens with his iconic mouse head. Before his rise to fame, deadmau5 worked as a factory worker in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The monotony of factory life gave him the motivation to dive deeper into his passion for music production. Zimmerman spent his free time experimenting with electronic music and developing the sound that would later define his career. His perseverance paid off when his unique production style and innovative sound design earned him recognition in the global electronic music scene. Today, deadmau5 is a household name in EDM, known for his experimental approach and boundary-pushing performances.
The paths to success for these EDM superstars were far from glamorous at first. They worked regular jobs, just like millions of people around the world, using those experiences as stepping stones toward their dreams. Their stories serve as a reminder that perseverance, passion, and a little bit of hustle can go a long way—even from the grocery store, the classroom, or the factory floor to the biggest stages in the world.

For their 17th edition, OSHEAGA Festival has once again succeeded with another momentous event. In a city where summer is embraced like no other, Montréal opened its arms to over 147,000 attendees from August 2 – 4 for three days of wonder. Through the lens of OSHEAGA Festival, festival goers from across the world got to experience Montréal’s finest music and arts culture in one place.
Among the 90 exceptional acts that graced the festival stages, Montréal’s local talent shined the brightest, exposing attendees to the vibrant and talented artist pool the city has to offer. Of the standout performers, Montréal-based Sinca was one to watch, delivering an uplifting, groovy afternoon set to warm the dancefloor up.
The Peruvian/Canadian producer quickly made a name for herself in 2021 after catching the attention of label industry leaders, Anjunadeep. Her single “Mancora” debuted on Anjunadeep Explorations 19, officially launching her artist career into the spotlight.
Since her entry into music production, Sinca has fine-tuned her signature sound, creating a sonic identity of her own. Her unique style weaves elements of progressive and melodic house into her work, fuelled by rolling basslines and feel-good grooves – imprinting her own auditory identity that channels joy to any dancefloor.
Crowned earlier as one of Dancing Astronaut’s 2024 Artists to Watch, Sinca has blazed into the year with unstoppable force. From releasing music on Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream label, to working alongside UK progressive-house veteran, John Digweed to offer a fresh remix on the near two-decade old “Santiago”, her accomplishments have decorated the first half of the year with finesse, with more to come.
Sinca’s afternoon OSHEAGA set heated up the Coca Cola stage dance floor, where fans were drenched in sunshine, soundtracked with sixty inimitable minutes of pure summer jubilation. Throughout the hour, her ease commanding the stage was manifest through a dose of funky record picks from artists like Natema and Monblaire, peppering in her own original productions including mainstays “Printemps” and “Made Up”, and even dipping into her ID vault to treat her hometown crowd.
For those looking to relive Sinca’s glorious sixty-minute set, it’s available to stream exclusively on Dancing Astronaut’s SoundCloud.

Jessy Covets is back with "Monsters In My Head," an electro-pop track moonlighting as a descent into the abyss of the human condition.
A versatile producer, DJ, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Covets is no stranger to the electronic dance music world. She's graced the stages of EDC Orlando, Wakaan Music Festival and Colorado's iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre and collaborated with NGHTMRE and Liquid Stranger, among other renowned producers.
She's harnessed the energy of EDM in her new single but channels it through hauntingly catchy pop to deliver a stark, unsettling peek into her psyche. Her lyrics are a twisted embrace of the anxious thoughts that so often dominate our waking hours—an acknowledgment that even our darkest impulses have a grip on our mind that can become difficult to shake.
Covets' tortured, crystalline vocals glide over a glitched-out backdrop in "Monsters In My Head," painting a vivid portrait of those internal demons and fighting off their commitment to consume her. "Always listening to the monsters in my head / Can't let them control me / But without them I'd be lonely," she plaintively intones, her voice dripping with a melancholic resignation. It's a lament that will be familiar to anyone who has struggled with anxiety or depression—the realization that even our most debilitating thoughts have become a sort of comfort.

Justice have teamed up with the Soundwaves Art Foundation to offer electronic music enthusiasts the opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind work of art that gives back.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a cooler philanthropic organization than Soundwaves, which raises money by developing and selling bespoke pieces of art from the recorded audio waveforms of songs. Turning tunes into triumphs for the greater good, the foundation has donated over $10 million to charities by working with over 700 musicians, including Outkast, Elton John, Dolly Parton, Pearl Jam and countless others. They've also collaborated with ODESZA, Flume, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers, among many other illustrious electronic music acts.
Soundwaves has now joined forces with the legendary Justice, who are fresh off the release of one of the year's best dance albums, Hyperdrama. The band's 2007 track "Genesis," the opener of their seminal debut album Cross, finds itself crystallized in the foundation's pioneering art format. Each print is both a tangible echo of the deeply influential song and a visual representation of its timeless French electro, which has redefined dancefloors for two decades.
This isn't just about aesthetics, however. Autographs by Justice's Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay elevate these pieces into rarified territory, making them coveted items for collectors and music aficionados alike. The prints, of which only 50 are available, were signed ahead of the duo's show at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on July 25th, Soundwaves Director Jeremy Klitzman tells EDM.com.

Artist Ionne is thrilled to announce the release of his latest E.P., Right Foot Front, a project deeply rooted in the vibrant world of skateboarding. Inspired by a silent documentary shot by local artists Kulimushi Barongozi and Jisu Sheen at the Second Floor Hardware School in New Haven, the E.P. offers a sonic exploration of the skateboarding scene, blending elements of drum’n’bass, jazz, and lounge music.
The documentary, available on YouTube, follows four New Haven skaters and captures their unique connection to the sport. Initially conceived as a four-track collection, the E.P. features the songs “Fly,” “Right Foot Front,” “A Kind of Dance,” and “Inducta,” each representing one of the skaters from the film. As the project evolved, Ionne added a fifth track, “From Afar,” reflecting his personal experiences observing skaters at local parks and immersing himself in the culture.
Ionne’s journey into the world of skateboarding was guided by his friends J Joseph and Steve Roberts, both seasoned skaters. Roberts, the founder of New Haven’s Push to Start skate program, along with Joseph, co-founder of the Scantlebury Park skatepark, provided valuable insights that shaped the E.P.’s narrative. The advice to “keep your right foot front” became a metaphorical and literal guide throughout the composition process, leading to a thematic progression from observation (“From Afar”), to learning (“Fly”), to embracing the skate lifestyle (“Right Foot Front” and “A Kind of Dance”), and finally to mastery (“Inducta”).

Right Foot Front initially started as a drum’n’bass project, but Ionne’s creative process led to genre-blending additions, such as the jazz-infused “From Afar” and the lounge-inspired “A Kind of Dance (Chill Mix).” These stylistic choices became integral to the storytelling, highlighting the diverse influences that shape the skateboarding community.
The E.P. also features a lineup of rising vocal talents, including rapper Dogman Rukus, spoken word artists Egypt English and Ms. Latrice P. Young, and singers Lou Alexander and Kleidi Buroz. The track “Right Foot Front” includes a contribution from the rapper Preferably Anonymous, whose distinctive London accent pays homage to the UK jungle scene that heavily influences drum’n’bass.
Ionne’s connection to jungle and drum’n’bass dates back to the 1990s U.S. rave scene, and this influence resurfaced in a defining moment at Edgewood Park in New Haven. Back in May, American audio equipment manufacturer Sonos updated its app and it received a lot of criticism from its long-time customers. According to an article from Digital Music News, the update removed many features that have appeared on the app for several years. Some of the features the app removed include the “shuffle all” from the combined library, no more volume numbers, timers and alarms, and lack of EQ control. The unpopularity of the update later influenced Sonos CEO Patrick Spence to apologize and, a few days ago, the company confirmed layoffs affecting about 100 employees.
The Reason Behind Sonos’ Layoffs
The layoffs from Sonos also come while the company continues fixing the effects of the updates that arrived back in May. According to a post from The HR Digest, the multiple bugs, missing features, accessibility issues, and other malfunctions that came from the app’s update disrupted the general workflow of the various departments in the company. On the day of the Sonos layoffs, the 100 employees instantly lost access to their work. This meant that those employees were unaware until later that they were on the layoff list and got the sack by Sonos immediately. The latest layoffs from Sonos are not the first time the company has overseen a situation like this. In 2020, during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it had to let go of 12% of its workforce and then in 2023, it laid off 7% more.
So far, the manufacturer has not laid out a plan that can get the app back going efficiently. The layoffs even prompted Sonos to halt two product launches so that the company could allow the developers more time to fix the app. There are also rumors that the app may return to its old version that many customers liked. CEO Patrick Spence then emphasized a goal towards improving the app to much more qualitative standards. The CEO said, “Continued commitment to the app recovery and delighting our customers remains our priority, and we are confident that today’s actions will not impact our ability to deliver on that promise”.

In a career-defining move, Will Clarke has revealed his debut album, Midnight Mass, due out in the fall of 2024.
A 13-track project that traverses the crossroads of house and techno, Clarke's upcoming effort will see him teaming up with a cadre of talented collaborators, including HAYLA, Blythe and Sharlene Hector. The album is said to serve as a testament to his evolving artistry, showcasing a heightened focus on profound vocal energy and meticulous songwriting.
Thematically, Midnight Mass merges Clarke's signature club-ready production with rich, soulful melodies, offering fans a deeper emotional connection while still delivering the high-octane rhythm to which they are accustomed.
Alongside the album, he will debut an "innovative" live show concept across six major North American cities, beginning in Los Angeles on November 22nd, according to a press release issued by Armada. Offering a cinematic experience that goes beyond a typical DJ set, the live production will complement the collaborative spirit and unifying force of the album itself.
"I'm tipping my hat to the sound that has defined me so far, but this collection of songs goes beyond just being suitable for a DJ set," Clarke said. "I wanted each track to have a strong vocal presence and to work both in a club setting and for casual listening. Collaborating with unbelievably talented artists, who became close friends during the process, was the most important part of making this album. I hope that sense of collaboration shines through in the music."

Twin Peaks has always been a place where reality blurs with the surreal, and with his latest track, "Garmonbozia," Flying Lotus masterfully captures the series' same spellbinding essence.
The new single conjures up the eerie atmosphere of the series' source material, leaving listeners in a hypnotic trance as they traverse its dark corridors. With "Garmonbozia," he ventures deep into the cinematic universe of the franchise, crafting a soundscape that feels as characteristically enigmatic as one would expect, and then some.
Each sonic element in "Garmonbozia" is meticulously crafted, allowing the track to become a vessel for our own confrontations with pain and sorrow, much like the mysterious substance from the show from which it takes its name. The track brims with a plotting, grungy bassline that slithers through the mix, its presence both ominous and magnetic.
As the bassline coils around the foundations of the track, FlyLo's own crooning vocal delivery emerges while swelling synths rise like dark clouds on the horizon, creating a sense of impending doom. Just when it seems the tension can stretch no further, otherworldly, mangled growls erupt, adding an additional layer of the producer's singular sound design. Hair-raising arpeggiated synths then seep into the soundscape, filling every shadowy crevice with a haunting charm.

Thirteen years ago, Calvin Harris released “Feel So Close.” The song became one of the defining tracks of the early 2010s, while pivoting the evolution of EDM. As we look back on its release, it’s obvious that “Feel So Close” was more than just a hit; it was a cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate with listeners.
By 2011, Calvin Harris was already a well-established name in music. However, “Feel So Close” marked a significant shift in his career. Unlike his previous work, where he often collaborated with other artists, Harris took center stage on this track, using his own voice in the song. This decision not only showcased his versatility as an artist, but also set the tone for a new wave of EDM that blurred the lines between DJ and singer.
When “Feel So Close” made its debut, it quickly became a success. It was not just a reflection of Harris’ talent, but also an indication of a broader shift in the music industry. EDM was beginning to take over mainstream music, and tracks like “Feel So Close” played a crucial role in bringing the genre to a global crowd.
Beyond its impact on the music charts, “Feel So Close” holds a special place in the hearts of fans. It’s a song that brings nostalgia for a time when EDM was on the rise, and the possibilities for the genre seemed endless. The track’s message of closeness and connection has remained relevant today, making it a timeless piece of music that continues to be enjoyed by listeners old and new.
