Odd Mob Returns With Dance Floor Weapon ‘Vertigo’

Following an unstoppable year so far, Brisbane’s Odd Mob unveils yet another dance floor anthem with his latest single ‘Vertigo’. Fresh off the back of his electrifying rework of Sean Paul’s iconic ‘Get Busy’, Odd Mob returns with a brand-new original collaboration. He teams up with UK singer/songwriter Ed Graves. He continues by explaining: “I had Ed’s vocals on my laptop for many years but never really got anywhere with it until I sat down with Dom Dolla for a general chat, and he basically reminded me that we make club music and that I should focus on making it something I would want to play. Hence the new version was born“.
The Year so Far :
This year has been nothing short of monumental for Odd Mob. He has been lighting up stages at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and clubs. Highlights include unforgettable sets at EDC, Tomorrowland, and supporting Swedish House Mafia at Ushuaïa, Ibiza. Appearances at Elrow at Amnesia, Ibiza, Beyond Wonderland, Wynn Las Vegas, and Parookaville in Germany, have firmly established Odd Mob as a global force in Electronic music.

As the year draws to a close, Odd Mob’s momentum shows no signs of slowing. Newly announced tour dates include a return to Australia’s Beyond The Valley and an ambitious end-of-year run across North America. This tour will see him headline his first-ever Hollywood Palladium show on October 12th. It will be followed by a highly anticipated performance at Webster Hall in New York this November.

I can hardly control my excitement as the expectation for Tomorrowland Brasil 2024 is nearing fever pitch! Less than a week remains, and the festival planners have released an amazing bombshell.

Chicane announces Live Symphonic Performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall

Electronic music icon Chicane has today announced a very special date at London’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 29th March 2025.
 
Playing a live symphonic performance of his huge 2023 release, ‘Far From the Maddening Crowd – Symphonic Rehearsal’; a rework of the iconic first album – this will be a once in a lifetime show, never to be repeated.
 
Renowned for his signature fusion of ambient, house, and trance, Chicane has remained a major force in the music world. Since establishing himself in 1997 with the seminal single ‘Offshore’ followed by the album ‘Far From The Maddening Crowds’ and Top 5 album ‘Behind The Sun’ (2000), Chicane has never stopped progressing. Currently in his ninth studio album and with ‘Far From the Maddening Crowds – Symphonic Rehearsals’ a recent worldwide Number 1, Chicane continues to influence both long time fans and a younger generation of DJs.
 
With his last five albums achieving worldwide success, many will be familiar with his catalogue of timeless classics that have been passed down generationally; “Saltwater,” “Halcyon,” “Don’t Give Up,” and “Poppiholla” to name a few. Decoded Magazine · Decoded Magazine presents Victor Ruiz With his deeply resonant appreciation for music, Victor Ruiz has firmly established himself as a dynamic selector. Born in Brazil and currently based in Lisbon, he has been a constant presence on the world stage since 2013 and is widely regarded for his mesmerizing DJ performances, appearing at a long list of influential events.
In the studio he is equally adept, releasing a steady flow of first-rate techno productions all of which encapsulate his distinct flair for musicality and energy. Victor is also the founder of Volta Records, his fledgling imprint, which is already picking up widespread support from many of techno’s most prominent figures. Hard working, innately talented and driven by his deep-rooted passion, Victor Ruiz is the product of a lifetime dedicated to music. From his brother’s love for heavy metal to being gifted a bass guitar at the age of nine, Victor’s musical roots go deep. In his late teens he quit formal education to study electronic music production when he reached university. Numerous influences shaped his early vision (Daft Punk, MTV, Fruity Loops…) and equipped him with the skills to progress, leading to his first DJ gigs. Without decks at home to practice on, the ambitious selector learned to DJ ‘in-the-field’ at clubs, gaining real-world experience from the get go and refining his craft in often very challenging situations.
Victor’s profile in Brazil exploded when he produced a big hit and his upwards trajectory really began to kick in. By 2009 his success led to bookings at many of the country’s biggest festivals, including Lollapalooza Brazil, Tribaltech, Tribe Festival, XXXperience Festival and Kaballah Festival with regular gigs at venues like Clash Club. Through these appearances he connected with numerous international selectors and started getting his music out to a wider audience. Early supporters included Stephan Bodzin and Hernan Cattaneo.
In 2013 his first European trip came through; a two-week tour including shows in Germany and Norway. This pivotal booking changed the course of his life, opening his eyes to Europe’s progressive club culture. Over the next five years his international profile boomed and he started picking up more bookings in Europe than he was in Brazil. A move to Berlin in 2018 was the next logical step, followed by a period in Amsterdam, back to Berlin and finally Lisbon. The Portuguese capital has provided a nourishing environment for Victor to settle and enjoy warmer climes, great for mood, creativity and relaxation. Key ingredients for any artist who tours on a regular basis.
We caught up with Victor Ruiz as part of our 10 year celebration at Decoded Magazine with an extra tasty exclusive mix.
You’ve had an incredible career in the techno scene since 2013. How would you summarise your journey so far, from Brazil to your current base in Lisbon?
Oh, man! That’s a long one. I actually started to make Techno in 2009, so it goes even further back. I guess being consistent was something I always aimed to achieve. I don’t feel that I’ve had any “big breaks” but many, many consistent steps, releases and shows.
I started touring Europe in 2013 and that one trip changed my life and how I perceived Techno. After that I came back to a very successful tour in 2014, where I played Fusion Festival, a very important show in my career. The following years I continued touring Europe and the world until 2018 when I moved to Berlin and things really started to gain traction.
I moved to Amsterdam in 2019 then 2020 back to Berlin and 2022 moved to Lisbon – which was the best decision I ever made. Meanwhile I had many releases on the biggest techno labels and even started my own imprint, VOLTA. And also played amazing festivals like Tomorrowland, Awakenings, Time Warp, Baum Festival, Lollapalooza to name a few. It’s been a crazy ride and right now I’m enjoying making different stuff besides techno, so let’s see where this takes me.
As someone who learned to DJ ‘in-the-field,’ what were some of the most challenging environments you encountered while honing your craft?
Myself. My ego. Always being divided to play to the crowd and to please other artists. Failing many times till I got the gist of what works for me as a DJ. Reading a crowd is so important, that’s why it’s necessary to be humble and have different experiences as a DJ, warming up or closing a night. Many newcomers oversee these practices and they are pivotal for being a successful performer.
Your music combines various influences. Can you talk about how your diverse musical background, including heavy metal and electronic music, shapes your sound today?
When I go to the studio I don’t think about what I’ll do. Instead, I let the song tell me what it wants to become. Having written and recorded Rock and Metal songs in the past, it gives me a different, more open approach to production. I don’t like norms. When I follow formulas the result is very mediocre for my standards. The best songs I’ve made was just me in the studio having fun, not caring about the result.
With the rise of “TikTok techno” and social media influencing the music scene, what are your thoughts on the impact of these platforms on emerging artists and their connection with live performances?
It was a tough pill to swallow when I realized that what I’ve been making for a decade was not so relevant anymore for today’s audience, and the sound that is very popular is this more EDM-ish Techno and very fast. These platforms are very, very strong and they’ve changed the whole world, not just the Techno scene. I guess it’s the present and the future and we all have to come to terms with it. The younger generation is more savvy with these platforms and I think it’s great. 
In the end I still believe that music will have the final word. Maybe I’m just a romantic.
Touring can be both exciting and exhausting. What kind of regime do you follow to maintain your sanity and health while on the road?
I literally almost had a burnout a week ago, so I decided that I had to change the way I tour. I was just going full on and my body and mind said STOP! 
I’ve been even thinking that maybe the tour life isn’t for me in the long run. I want to have some sort of normal life, with my partner, I want to have my own family, kids and all of that. It’s very conflicting, man. Fucked up my mind a bit. I love making music, love playing it, but at the moment I feel a bit lost and very tired. I’m taking 3 weekends off and I can’t wait for that.
Also, following up a bit from the previous question, I feel very misplaced in the Techno scene right now, so not even that is bringing me a lot of joy. It’s been tough. But, hey, life is like that: ups and downs. I’m focusing on hanging out with the beautiful people I have around me and making music from my heart.
In the studio, what is your creative process like? Can you share your most accomplished track up to this point and what makes it special for you?
Like I said before, I try to have zero expectations. Sometimes I listen to some reference songs to inspire me, sometimes it can be a preset from a synth that unravels a whole universe in my mind and the track just happens. Sometimes is just repetition until something pops.
I guess the most accomplished was my remix of ‘1998’, from Binary Finary. I didn’t have the parts so I had to recreate all the sounds from scratch. I also sampled some parts from the original using AI tools and for the break, when the track slows down, I had to make a second project on Logic just for that, then export it to the main project of the remix. It took me like a month to finish it, but I made it!
You’ve performed at some of the world’s biggest festivals. Do you have a favourite country or a memorable touring moment that stands out?
It has to be Fusion Festival 2014 in Germany and Boom Festival 2023 in Portugal. Fusion was my “big break” in Germany. It was a last-minute show that I was booked for at a prime time at the iconic Turmbühne – the main stage. To this day, it is my most played recorded set on my Soundcloud. Boom was a dream coming true and probably my favourite festival on the planet. Since I was a kid, producing psytrance in my bedroom back at my mom’s place I dreamt about playing there. It was so much more than I ever thought. The connection of people and music is just so beautiful and pure.
You launched the Victor Ruiz Masterclass during the pandemic. What motivated you to create this program, and what have you learned from working with aspiring DJs and producers?
To be real I started it because I had no job LOL. Jokes aside, I always wanted to share my process of making music and to help new producers to improve their craft. I got so much help throughout the years from other producers, so since I had so much time, I wrote, recorded, edited and did subtitles all by myself and my management helped me structure the website and the platform to sell it. It connected me with so many amazing people, because I was also doing one on one mentorship sessions. That was kinda the embryo of my label VOLTA.
Could you describe your studio setup? What is your favourite piece of equipment or plugin that you find essential to your production process?
Mostly I used my MacBook Pro and my headphones Sennheiser HD 25, since I produce a lot on the road. In Lisbon I do have a studio with some really cool gear which I unfortunately don’t use as much as I should. Among them, my favourite is the Access Virus TI2 Polar. It’s just such a complete synth and I love every bit of it.
With your fledgling label, Volta Records, what are your goals going forward, and how do you envision it supporting the music community?
I just want to bring new producers onboard, make them connect themselves and give them a platform where they have opportunities that they don’t have on other big labels. To be honest, I just want to release great music and to help people.
You’ve had significant success with chart-topping releases on your label. How do you balance creative expression with commercial success in your music?
I guess it’s a simple one. Whenever I’m connected to my essence as an artist and make music I really love and believe in, it works really well “commercially”. Sometimes it’s a gamble but generally it pays off. I was quite impressed with the success of some of my releases on VOLTA, but also because I wasn’t expecting much. So probably also being detached to any outcome makes you more relaxed when creating.
This year has seen major changes in Ibiza with the influx of wealthy tourists. What are your thoughts on this trend, and do you think there will be a tipping point that could affect the scene?
Well, it’s a global phenomenon not just in Ibiza. The scene is already affected by all of this, good and bad. My only wish is that we don’t lose our essence and the core of why Electronic Music exists and always has existed: a place to be free and safe.
How do you prepare for a set to ensure you deliver an engaging experience for the audience?
I always make sure to have a lot of great music and I let the crowd “instruct me” on what they want and then I try to take them on a journey. Every show is different. Every club is different. Every festival is different. So, it’s important to look them in the eyes and understand what the vibe of the night (or day) is. 
Many people look up to you as a successful artist. What is the best piece of advice you received early in your career that you would pass on to new artists today?
Success is relative. Don’t romanticise it. Goals that you have today, once you achieve them, may bring you joy for a day and you get used to it, then you’re gonna aim for the next one. It’s human nature. Savour and enjoy every step of your journey. Sounds super cliche but it’s true. It’s not the peak of the mountain, but the climb that matters. And the person you become to get there.
In terms of your musical evolution, where do you see yourself heading in the next few years? Are there specific styles or projects you’re excited to explore?
Probably very far from the Techno I’ve been doing these past couple years. I’ve just finished an album of a new alias I’m creating that is so different. Can’t say much but it’s VERY exciting!

Sam Silver, ALRT, Yona Present Their Brand New Single “Downtime feat. Leap96”

Following the success of “Back It Up” and “Again ft. Whiteroseemoxie and Yona”, rising artist Sam Silver has announced the release of his latest single, “Downtime feat. Leap96”, a collaboration with ALRT and French singer Yona. Set to drop on September 27th 2024, “Downtime” is the third track from Sam Silver’s highly anticipated EP, “Leap 96”, which will be released on October 18th via TH3RD BRAIN Records.

“Downtime” brings a fresh, emotionally resonant sound, blending speed garage influences with smooth, evocative vocals. Perfect for both intimate lounges and high-energy dance floors, the track balances nostalgic emotions with an upbeat vibe. The distinctive vocal chop featured in the drop is truly an instant earworm, making it a perfect match for creators looking for trending audio.
Sam Silver reflects on the inspiration behind the track saying, “Relationships are complex and circumstances can make our feelings inexplicably oscillate. Yearning for deep, meaningful connection amidst life’s challenges and uncertainties is a universal need. We wanted to present this balance in an emotional, yet fun song that everyone can relate to”
Yona adds, “This song explores the intense emotions of a tumultuous relationship. It expresses the passion of loving someone who often feels distant, expressing a feeling of wanting to be loved even when they only want you at certain times. The lyrics reflect a desire to be accepted, and to find connection and validation in the midst of pressure and uncertainty.”
The upcoming EP, “Leap 96”, is a collaborative effort between Sam Silver and ALRT, pulling from the rich sonic palette of the late 90s and early 2000s, when garage and drum & bass first hit the underground rave scene. The music combines vocal-driven dance tracks designed for both uptempo and downtempo environments. The title, “Leap 96”, is a nod to the middle year between Sam and ALRT’s birth years, which also happened to be a leap year.
This collaboration is a testament to both artists’ backgrounds: ALRT brings his old-school rave influences, while Sam Silver adds flavors from the new-age garage, rap, and ethereal house scenes. The result is a unique fusion of garage, drum and bass, rap, and indie pop sensibility.
Sam Silver and ALRT’s partnership began during a chance meeting at a Hollywood studio co-founded by renowned artist/producer JOYRYDE. What began as a casual co-writing session evolved into a two-month-long collaboration, leading to the creation of the four songs on the “Leap 96” EP and more to come.

DJ Awards reveal 2024 winners

The fantastic first edition of the newly revived DJ Awards was a hugely successful night of music and celebration at Chinois, Ibiza, on October 2nd. Winners were announced in several key categories and special Industry Awards were handed out to legends of the scene by venerable hosts BBC 1 tastemaker Jaguar and Katie Knight. The magical evening marked a welcome return for the DJ Awards which is now very much back as ‘The Oscars of dance music’ once again. 
This year was the first time in four years that the DJ Awards honoured its well deserving winners, with music lovers, industry insiders, and members of the public all in attendance at the star-studded event. The mood was high on fun after an epic Ibiza summer and the awards came thick and fast with plenty of great acceptance speeches. 
The genre winners were: Afro – Black Coffee, House – Sam Divine, Tech House presented by The Hub Ibiza Studios – Vintage Culture, Trance – Armin Van Buuren, Techno – Sven Vath, Drum and Bass – Chase and Status, Organic House presented by Soul Water – WhoMadeWho, Progressive House presented by Christoffe Champagne – Camelphat, International DJ Of The Year Award – Fisher, Breakthrough presented by Riot Noise – Miss Monique, Live Act was Roisin Murphy.
Also on the night, Industry Award winners were presented with their trophies having been selected by a specially assembled team of industry professionals. They were the Ibiza Icon Award presented by Ibiza Global Radio – Luciano, Best Ibiza Party presented by Hibiki – David Guetta’s F*** Me I’m Famous at Ushuaia and Future Rave at Hi Ibiza, Lifetime Achievement Award – Javier Anadon, Ibiza Track of the Summer Award – Adam Port, Stryv – Move feat. Malachiii, What’s Hot Global Award – Keinemusik, Global Festival – Defected Croatia, Play It Back Award – Michael Bibi’s One Life Campaign, and the Eye on… USA – Gospel New York. 
After the main ceremony, the afterparty kicked off in the club with special sets from Luciano, Cristoph, Mathew Jonson, Ben Sterling and Manu Gonzalez.

San Francisco’s Early 90’s Rave Scene Documentary “BETWEEN THE BEATS”

Gravitas Ventures, an Anthem Sports & Entertainment Company have shared the official trailer for ‘Between The Beats’, a feature documentary that explores San Francisco’s early 90’s rave scene, its legacy and the influence on the Bay Area and the global dance scene today. The film is set to release on VOD platforms on October 15, 2024. 
The film, directed by Martin O’Brien, produced by O’Brien and Mike Koeppel and edited by Robbie Proctor, features Brian Behlendorf, DJ Harvey, DJ Dan, DJ Doc Martin, DJ Garth, DJ Jeno, Joe Haller, Ethan Miller, and other major players in San Francisco’s blissful early 90s rave scene and its powerful influence across the world. 
San Francisco was the epi-center of the American rave scene and witnessed some legendary events that began in the early ‘90s. These all-night electronic-music dance parties attracted a diverse cross-section of people. Culturally iconic and socially important, the parties became a catalyst in the lives of so many of the people who experienced them, many of whom went on to become huge players in Silicon Valley, the global dance music scene, and the world of activism. Energetic and inspiring, ‘Between The Beats’ examines the do-it-yourself mentality and psychedelic community spirit that the San Francisco Bay Area rave scene epitomised. 
“Bringing “Between The Beats” to life was incredibly personal to me as one of the many people who helped create the rave scene in San Francisco. The film was made to take viewers on a journey back to an early 90s music scene that has since grown into the hugely popular EDM / electronica phenomenon across the globe. I wanted to capture the magic of those early years and celebrate transformational music and the powerfully positive energy among its participants,” said Martin O’Brien.

[Album Review] Sara Landry Summons Debut Album Spiritual Driveby

The final step of the ritual has been finalized. No, no, we’re not summoning demonic spirits from the netherrealm. Instead, we are celebrating the debut album of the High Priestess herself. Sara Landry had a whirlwind of a year, becoming the face for Hard Techno and women empowerment in the scene. With her witchy and intense vibes, Landry invokes her magnum opus Spiritual Driveby. Now available on her label HEKATE Records, the album has already wreak havoc all over the world.

The Texas native DJ takes you on a wild and delicious ride from beginning to end. The album begins with the ambient track ‘devotion 396hz‘ that includes the vocals from Sara’s personal hypnotist, Restorative Hypnosis. Then, let mayhem begin. The album follows a journey into a sexy underworld, which includes the lead singles ‘Prisoner’, ‘Heaven’, ‘Pressure’, and ‘Because they want our Seat’. The entire opus is a collaboration with incredible producers, including Shlømo, Mike Dean, Nico Moreno, Alt8, LEGZDINA, Alex Farrell, and more.
However, the true essence of the LP lies within the rest of the tracks that were not as heavily marketed. ‘Veni Vidi Vici’ is an absolute banger. Aaron Hibell, UK DJ known for his incredible Trance-influenced tracks and versatility helped craft this track alongside a choir singer. The elite Latin Vocals and the runs add such an ancestral eerieness to the track, which influences the vibe of the album. ‘Speaker Freaker’ features Diøn, and its distorted synths fill each dancefloor and festival with vigor and euphoria.
As someone that has seen ms. Landry live four times this year, the way she is able to embrace the entire album on her sets in a way that every single sets feels unique, new, and fresh, speaks highly of her skills to create pristine atmospheres on each set. Moreover, the album is a big F*** You to people that doubt and challenge her success, her audio-engineering, and production skills on mysoginistic attempts to discredit her. Nevertheless, the album’s purpose is to represent that sense of unity on the dancefloor through intense beats and dark melodies.
Up Next
As usual, Sara landry continues to aim higher and higher on her goals. Major milestones for the High Priestess include headlining the mainstage at Tomorrowland in Belgium, being the first DJ to bring Hard Techno to that platform. We also have to recognize Charlotte de Witte for being the first Female Techno DJ to close out that stage in 2022. Furthermore, Landry started her HEKATE takeovers in LA and Tennessee. Let’s not forget she was the first artist to host a two-day Hard Techno event at The Caverns. With multiple tracks topping the Techno charts on Beatport, Landry is just starting to warm up.
In a couple weeks, we will return to III Points to catch yet another filthy Sara Landry set in Miami, as she makes her return to EDC’s Cruise EDSEA for her second year in a row. November will be packed as Landry embarks in her Veni Vidi Vici tour. After an incredible Arc Music Festival show, Sara will invade Radius in Chicago for two nights of mischief. Her power will also influence Dallas and Denver. Then, she will head down to South America to culminate the tour in Lima, São Paulo, and Santiago de Chile.
It might sound whimsical to always use mystical references when we speak of mother Sara. It serves a purpose, though. There is a reason why she has established such a wonderful following. Her music, and her craft, have managed to bring people together and channel different emotions through hard beats. This has resonated with a major audience, allowing her sound to become more mainstream, even when Hard Techno is still such a niche genre within EDM.
Spiritual Driveby receives the EDMTunes seal of approval, due to its high-octane, emotional, and cathartic value. Kudos to her and her team.

Tiësto ‘Kaleidoscope’ Album Has Turned 15 Years Old

Fifteen years ago, on October 6, 2009, Tiësto released his groundbreaking fourth studio album, ‘Kaleidoscope’, marking a pivotal shift in his career and redefining the boundaries of electronic music. Calvin Harris & Alesso’s Sensational Collaboration ‘Under Control’ Turns 11 Years Old

Going into 2013 both Alesso and Calvin Harris were on a role with Calvin Harris coming off the back of releasing his incredible ‘18 Months’ album and Alesso having released the biggest tracks of his career at the time with ‘Calling (Lose My Mind)’ and ‘Years.’ Following on from this success they combined their talents to deliver the progressive house classic, ‘Under Control.’
This track is a perfect combination of Alesso and Harris’s styles along with some brilliant vocals from Theo Hutchcraft of the British synth pop duo Hurts who had been friends with Calvin Harris for years though this would be their first time working together. Speaking with NME, Theo said they “wanted to make it (the song) a representative of the three of us” which was perfectly achieved with each artist having parts of the song where their influence shone through such as the chorus where Alesso’s euphoric progressive house style takes centre stage.
‘Under Control’ was a huge hit debuting at number one in the Official UK Singles Chart which was Alesso’s first of many number hits to come. The track would appear on Alesso’s debut album ‘Forever’ and Calvin Harris’s ‘Motion’ album with it being a massive highpoint on both and has since gone on to receive just shy of 600 million streams on Spotify.
When it comes to naming the best collaborations of all time in electronic music, ‘Under Control’ is one that cannot be ignored. Its commercial success is impressive, however it is far surpassed by the lasting love from the electronic music community along with its great message of cherishing life and living it to max with no regrets.

John Digweed Shares Recovery Update After Hospitalization

After a scary hospitalization last week, legendary UK DJ John Digweed finally updated us on his health. The DJ took it on social media to announce that he no longer needed an IV drip at the hospital where he was checked in after falling extremely sick last week.

The DJ had to cancel many shows and appeareances last Saturday after falling ill. The DJ was going to play in Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Dallas. Although his team has not disclosed much about what sickness is Digweed fighting, many DJs took it onto their social media sending him lots of love and wishes. One of his long-time collaborators, Sasha, had shows with Digweed, in Mexico City and Dallas. John Digweed is one of the most influential figures in Progressive House. Moreover, He came number 1 in the DJ Mag Poll back in 2001, and most recently, appeared in an Interview for the 30th anniversary of the magazine.
Digweed thanked his medical team for their help during this trying time for him, as he had been in the hospital for 10 days. Digweed has more appeareances scheduled in the next couple weeks, including Bedrock at Amsterdam Dance Event. Finally, he has an appeareance in Brooklyn at the Chocolate Factory. His team hasn’t confirmed whether he will be making it to those shows. However, we wish John a speedy recovery!

[Event Review] Portola Music Festival Electrified Fans Once Again At Pier 80

On the weekend of Sept. 27-28, the Portola Music Festival at Pier 80 in San Francisco once again electrified fans, just like it did in 2022 and 2023. Fans get to experience plenty of world-class Techno, House, Electro-Rock, Drum-n-Bass, and more during those two days and the warm yet breezy weather made it all better. The festival, of course, occurred before the heat wave that is currently affecting most of the Bay Area at this moment.
Aside from the music that turned up the crowds from the first minute the festival gates opened on the 27th to when the last beat dropped on the 28th, there were vast amounts of amenities that satisfied the fans. The diverse array of food, drinks, merchandise, and even accessible accommodations ensured every fan that they received the high-quality service and treatment the festival prides itself upon. Here is the summary of the 2024 edition of Portola Music Festival, a festival that celebrates San Francisco’s love for wonderful music regardless of genre.

Pier 80 is near one of San Francisco’s top nightclubs/entertainment venues, The Midway. In fact, located near The Midway are two entrances that lead to Portola Music Festival, one from Cesar Chavez Street and one from Marin Street. Once fans get past the festival gates and make their first steps inside Pier 80, they can see the importance of the pier in global trade since Pier 80 is San Francisco’s only pier that can support direct unloading of materials from ships to railroad cars for further transportation and distribution of goods. Fans also enjoyed the bountiful food stalls and bar booths spread throughout the festival’s grounds and the same goes for other amenities such as merchandise stands, medical tents, lockers, and restrooms.
The four stages of Pier 80 from the past two editions of Portola Music Festival returned: Ship Tent, Warehouse, Crane Stage, and Pier Stage. To emphasize the diverse offerings of wonderful music at these stages, one can enter any stage and can still feel very happy, even if they did not know who the artist(s) was before. There were plenty of people pulling out their phones, not only to record clips but also to Shazam the tracks so that they could add those tracks to their playlists for future streaming.

Walking on festival grounds, and hopping between the stages, was a very active and amazing feeling. Nils Hoffmann was the first artist to witness when walking inside Ship Tent and the vibe got off to a mellow yet energetic flow. Getting to see Nala, Mall Grab and Floating Points at Warehouse, Nia Archives at Ship Tent, Snow Strippers and JPEGMAFIA at Crane Stage, and Tycho at Pier Stage when the sun was still out provided a great start to the festival. The Warehouse Stage in particular is the only stage that is for the majority covered up since it is literally a warehouse of Pier 80. However, it is a very memorable venue due to bass-pounding, heart-pumping excitement that the Techno rhythms generate throughout the whole area.
Furthermore, Jamie XX and RÜFÜS DU SOL (especially when the trio played tracks of their upcoming fifth album, Inhale / Exhale) at Pier Stage, Astra Club (a B2B set between Carlita and DJ Tennis) and Four Tet at Warehouse, and Soulwax and Gesaffelstein (especially when he played his tracks from his most recent album, Gamma) at Crane Stage showed why Portola Music Festival is one of this country’s and also the world’s, most exciting electronic music festivals. In this regard, it is very exciting due to the diversity of not just the Electronic music genres that fans got to hear there, but also the inclusion of various genres of Electro-Rock, Rap, and Pop (especially Electro-Pop) as well.

Day 2 of Portola Music Festival also provided great, top-notch, fire-enhancing music at Pier 80. Among the highlights of the second day were Panjabi Hit Squad and Ahadadream turning up the volume at Ship Tent, Boyz Noise producing a stellar B2B set with VTSS at Warehouse, DJ Pee.Wee (Anderson .Paak‘s vinyl DJ alias) showcasing his multi-skilled musical repertoire at Crane Stage, and LP Giobbi, Ben Böhmer, and a phenomenal live set from Barry Can’t Swim magnified the atmosphere at Pier Stage.
As the sun started to set, the atmosphere of Day 2 became more enlightened. Disclosure and Justice ensured the fans continued to have blissful emotions at Pier Stage, Chase & Status, M.I.A., and Fisher frequently played top bangers at Crane Stage when giving out those awesomely massive vibes, Glass Beams at Ship Tent played rhythmic, uplifting music to elevate the senses, and Honey Dijon and Sara Landry at Warehouse really cranked up the volume at maximum levels with sense-stimulating Techno vibrating to all corners of this fantastic stage.
A notable live performance from Tinlicker
One of the stand out acts of the festival, Tinlicker, performed their closing set at the Ship Tent on Sunday. The duo did a live performance that included some of their classics alongside new tracks from their newest album. The live elements of the performance really took the songs to an ethereal next level, inspiring strong emotions in the crowd.
Tinlicker released their third album, Cold Enough for Snow, this past February via [PIAS] Électronique. The emotional yet highly danceable release reinforced the duo’s diamond-sharp production skills, alongside indie guitars, soulful vocals, arresting lyrics and orchestral instruments.

Overall, the 2024 edition of Portola Music Festival showed that the festival is here to stay in the “City by the Bay”. Festival organizers ensured that the sound levels will be at an appropriate amount for the festival attendees to still have a spectacular time dancing their hearts away and at the same time, ensure that the privacy of the nearby residents (especially those living across the Bay) are at ease as well. Hopefully, Portola Music Festival at Pier 80 will become a three-day celebration just like other globally renowned festivals such as EDC, Ultra, and Tomorrowland.
