“Everything was better in the 90s!” You probably heard this phrase a million times, and while it may not always be true, it does relate to Faithless’ “Insomnia.” Released back in 1995, Sister Bliss, Maxi Jazz, and Rollo Armstrong gave the world one of the greatest dance hits ever created. With a mesmerizing production, powerful vocals, as well as lyrics, the British band took the rave scene by storm from only their second release.
“I spent 20 minutes with a pad jotting down my thoughts, finished the lyrics in the studio the following evening, then spent about 25 minutes putting the vocals down,” mentioned the late Maxi Jazz in an interview with The Guardian in 2020. Despite the fact it took a short amount of time to write and record the vocals, they caught the ears of listeners.
“If I had a quid for every time someone’s come up going, ‘I can’t get no sleep’, I’d be living on the space station,” said the vocalist of Faithless regarding one of the most famous lines of all electronic music. Along with the catchy vocals of Maxi Jazz, came the instrumental which makes this record special.
The one of a kind bassline and melody also contributed towards the popularity of the track, making it an unforgettable release. The song was initially launched in the UK in 1995 but after gaining continental success, it was proposed by Pete Tong for a re-release which happened in 1996.
On the same day of the re-release, Spice Girls dropped “Say You’ll Be There”, meaning that “Insomnia” would be placed in racks alongside it. The Faithless record charted just two places below “Say You’ll Be There” which was no.1 at the time.
Still being played in these days, “Insomnia” represents rave culture all around the world, whether it is through reworks or the original mix. In one of his last interviews, Maxi Jazz said: “It was a big shock for the song to be such a huge hit, but an even bigger shock that it’s still such a favourite.”
In 2022, Maxi Jazz, the vocalist of Faithless sadly passed away aged 65. The electronic dance music industry stood still with famous DJs and producers reflecting on the impact of the British singer.
Although, the death of Maxi Jazz went beyond the music world. An example are fans of Crystal Palace, the football club Maxi Jazz supported.
For the team’s next home fixture following the news about Maxi Jazz, they revealed a mural of him at the club’s stadium, as well as honoured his legacy through a banner ahead of the game.
Celebrate the 29th anniversary of “Insomnia” by Faithless by streaming the record below.

Today, the techno festival, Awakenings, set off a firestorm with a social media post about saying (temporary) goodbye to the legendary Gashouder venue in Amsterdam.
We’ve already said temporary farewell to Printworks and we saw Miami’s Club Space closed for the entire Summer for its renovations. What’s happening with Gashouder?
As it turns out, these plans have been in motion since August. On August 10, Amsterdam granted a permit to build a basement under Gashouder. Right now, there are numerous tents sitting around the venue to house necessary components and production facilities. There is an entrance area for security checks, cloakrooms, dressing rooms, production space, and much more. These will all be moved to a newly constructed basement beneath the venue. It will free up the area around the venue and improve the aesthetics of the structure.
Gashoulder will close for these renovations, which will also include significant sound insulation and new ways to manage crowd flow in the space. Below is a visual showing the before and after plan.
Timeline
Gashoulder will close in early 2025 for the renovations, and the work is expected to last nine months. We hope that the construction stays on schedule! For those with concerns there will be an app where people can monitor the progress and there will even be monthly walk throughs for the public to come and ask questions. So after NYE festivities, we will bid farewell to Gashouder until Fall of 2025. Hopefully we’ll see it in new form come ADE 2025.

The endless quest for IDs has propelled Shazam to an unfathomable milestone: over 100 billion searches.
Representatives of the Apple-owned platform put the number of searches into perspective in a celebratory blog post, noting that it would take 12 searches from every person on the planet to reach 100 billion. If a single user tried to reach that figure, they would need to Shazam a new song every second for 3,168 years.
The data illustrates the explosive growth garnered by Shazam since its debut back in 2002, to which Apple credits gradual advancements to the app. At first, users could only search using SMS, but now they can search on desktop, mobile and on devices like smartwatches.
Electronic dance music represents a significant portion of the top 100 songs searched on Shazam. That includes generational dance anthems like Avicii's "Wake Me Up," Martin Garrix's "Animals and The Chainsmokers and Halsey's "Closer," among others. Meanwhile, synthwave icon Kavinsky recently achieved the most-Shazamed minute in the app's history after he performed his iconic single "Nightcall" at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

The U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially provided his backing for Parliament plans to make spiking a criminal offense nationwide. The PM’s backing comes after the Labour Government made spiking a criminal offense as a form of assault under the “Offences Against the Person Act” on July 17th. The criminal offense, which Parliament included it in the 35 proposed bills, also got its introduction during the King’s Speech that occurred on that same date as well.
Other nightlife leaders and industry executives have shown support and praise for the planned passing of the criminal offense, especially since there will be staff training on how to prevent spiking from happening at the venues. That training may roll out starting in spring 2025. An official press release from the UK GOV earlier today affirmed the pledge from PM Keir Starmer, alongside a joint coalition of industry executives, police chiefs, and transport heads, to keep women and girls safe at night by strongly cracking down on spiking. The Prime Minister would later confirmed those initial plans in a meeting with the aforementioned executives, chiefs, and heads on the same day.
Photo Credit: Getty Images Training throughout the UK on how to prevent spiking in all venues
According to an article from Mixmag, the crackdown on spiking will involve widespread training across the nightlife industry. This nationwide training process will utilize the extensive and valuable training of skills to thousands of staffers in noticing the offense right away and preventing it quickly before the victim falls for the crime. A pilot program will commence the plans starting from December.
Afterwards, the training will start its rollout process towards up to 10,000 nightlife workers in spring next year. This is a great step in ensuring a fun and safe nightlife environment and with spiking being made into a criminal offense, it may influence various governments worldwide to enact similar policies relating to that as well. The state of California has even mandated bars and nightclubs to provide drug testing devices for patrons starting this past July. Last but not least, this will show offenders that spiking is a very serious crime and they will face very severe consequences if they receive charges for it. Here is a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Prime Minister Keir Starker that emphasizes the government’s commitment to cracking down on spiking.

Just when the battle between Malaa and his Alter Ego couldn’t get any fiercer, the two strike again. This time, DJ and producer Odymel chooses his side. Joining forces with the Alter Ego, Odymel collaborates on the new high-energy track ‘Mango Disco’. Fresh off the success of Malaa’s recent release ‘Make It Work’, the masked Alter Ego keeps the energy fired up, with a high-octane anthem that showcases hard techno in its truest form.

Infused with playful and infectious melodies, ‘Mango Disco’ showcases a brighter disco-inspired side of production from the Alter Ego, while staying true to its essence and incorporating Odymel’s signature high-energy touch. Known for his eclectic mix of house, techno, trance, and Eurodance, Odymel has rapidly gained attention since his debut in early 2023, captivating audiences with wild, melody-driven rave experiences. Together, the duo delivers a track that’s as surprising as it is addictive—a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for any rave or club night.

This fresh collaboration highlights Malaa’s evolution as an artist who consistently defies genre boundaries. Just last week, the Alter Ego made his debut on stage with a full drum & bass set, giving fans an electrifying first look at his live energy. And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s already teasing new merch, keeping the hype building for what’s next.

Fans can expect the infectious vibes of ‘Mango Disco’ to become a staple in the live sets of Malaa’s Alter Ego.

Quite simply, ‘WTFU’ does what the title suggests: it Wakes you The F*ck Up! There is no break from the peak time madness here, from the opening sample that first commands your attention to the droning race car techno throughout, this is the soundtrack to the darkest and sweatiest club experiences. ‘WTFU’ is the third collaboration between the artists, following the previously released singles ‘Steam Train‘ (2016) and ‘LazersX999‘ (2019).

About Chocolate Puma
Chocolate Puma is a Dutch DJ/producer duo consisting of René ter Horst and Gaston Steenkist, aka Dj Zki & Dobre. The guys started producing music in 1991, delivering club hits under several artist names. Drawn together by a shared appreciation of the house music movement of the early 90s, their career got off to a turbo-charged start with the release of what would become one of the defining records of their career. Recording under their alias of The Good Men, the duo released ‘Give It Up’ on their own Fresh Fruit label in 1992. The record surpassed all expectations, reaching #1 on the US Dance Chart and #5 on the UK Singles Chart, propelling them to unexpected global stardom.
In 2001, the duo came up with their last alias, Chocolate Puma. And like The Good Men, Chocolate Puma got off to a dream start with the release of ‘I Wanna Be U’; another record that became a worldwide hit and reached #6 in the UK Singles chart, prompting an appearance from the duo on Tops of the Pops. Then, after ‘Always And Forever’ again entered the UK singles chart in 2005, they decided to drop all those other aliases and continue as Chocolate Puma.
Over the decades, they have released music like ‘Scrub The Ground’, ‘Lullaby’, and ‘You Are My Life’ on different labels like Axtone, Defected, Positiva, FFRR, Strictly Rhythm, Spinnin’, Musical Freedom, Mixmash, and Heldeep, to name a few. Recently, their music has been rediscovered by artists like Adam Beyer, Tita Lau, Nicole Moudaber, and others. It’s no surprise they have regular appearances at major clubs and festivals worldwide, including Hï & Ushuaia Ibiza, Tomorrowland Belgium, Mysteryland The Netherlands, EDC & Omnia Las Vegas, Sensation Korea, Veld Festival Canada, Stereo Live USA.
