“Tomorrowland is too mainstream for me” is something I’ve heard so many times (the 10 most played tracks say otherwise), especially from people who mainly listen to hard techno and underground music. Well, guess what? Tomorrowland will bring its first hard-techno dedicated event on the 22 of November.
It’s called Atmosphere and it will place at Waagnatie Antwerp on Friday, November 22. The 4.000-capacity venue will be set up in true Tomorrowland fashion with a meticulously selected lineup.
The lineup for Tomorrowland presents Atmosphere includes Alignment, Azyr, BYØRN b2B VIDO, Helena Lauwaert, Holy Priest, Nico Moreno, and NOVAH.
Tickets pre-Sale starts on Tuesday, October 1 at 17:00, General Sale starts on Thursday, October 3 at 17:00. You have to pre-register to access the sale.
Hard techno, characterized by its pulsating beats and high-energy rhythms, has emerged as the new face of techno.
Tomorrowland will take the hard techno madness to the raw and industrial architecture of Waagnatie Antwerp during a spectacular all-night-long event with a breathtaking production.
If you’re a Tomorrowland fan you surely know the name Atmosphere.
The Atmosphere stage has been an established name at the Belgian festival for years now. The massive custom-made tent structure caters to thousands of party people, serving techno music in all of its relentless shapes.
Atmosphere is just the latest party installment for Tomorrowland that has already brought around the world the CORE concept as well as a party series in Dubai and in Amsterdam for the upcoming ADE.

UPDATE: As of September 23, an official statement has been released on the Lost Lands subreddit, see image below. Along other lines, it reads, “Last night, emergency response teams responded to a car accident in the vendor campgrounds. One person was transported to the hospital and is in good condition. The investigation is being handled by the Licking County Police Department, and they have one individual in custody“.
The Lost Lands subreddit is going off the rails as a discussion regarding an incident started last night. Per multiple Reddit accounts, an intoxicated driver ran over multiple tents from vendor camping last night, injuring multiple people. Although this story is still in process for all accurate information, it seems the Lost Lands team is brushing off the accusations and deleting all the comments relevant to the situation.
The Incident At Lost Lands
Reddit became the primary source of informantion last night as multiple accounts posted pictures of the event. Late night saturday, a truck went into a rampage and ran over lots of tents. The main account that posted it stated Lost Land security and officials were useless to call 911 or provide any type of assistance for the injured. Later on, the Festive Owl made a post, summarizing what we know as of now.
This is a developing story and more details will come soon. As of now, the official Reddit for the event is deleting comments and posts regarding the incident and no official statements have been announced. The event is a production from Canadian DJ and producer Jeffrey Scott Abel, also known as Excision. It’s an extended camping experience with predominantly bass artists.

The French project KAS:ST just released an insanely fun (and unexpected) Psytrance Track under HI-LO’s Label HILOMATIK. Just recently, the project was a duo that turned solo as of March of this year. This might’ve worked for the best, as this year has been major for KAS:ST. The track might be very non-chalant in nature, but we surely give a F… you know what I mean.
‘DGAF’
The track has the vital elements of Psychedelic Trance. A tasty high-speed, galloping two-beat bass, withlots of synths and a melody to die for. But plot twist, KAS:ST then fuses some Techno elements, into it, with aggressive vocals, some acid reverbs, and that sensational tire screeching sound that reminds us of a Formula 1 circuit. This track proves a whole new direction for most of the artist’s most recent work, including tons of slower Melodic Techno, with significant collaborations with ARTBAT and Gordo. If anything, this track reminds us of older KAS:ST work, such as the A Magic World and Road To Nowhere LPs. This might prove a change of gears in Manuel Sene’s trajectory as the sole member of the pseudonym.

The French Project KAS:ST started as a Duo with members Manuel Sene and Karol Herse. Now led by Sene alone, his hypnotic and melodic dark soundscapes have gathered support from artists such as 999999999, Tale of Us, HI-LO, and more. Coming from a professional soccer background, Sene is now based in Spain, touring Europe and the world, driving his sound forward. You will soon find him playing at Loveland in Amsterdam and at one Seismic Dance Event In Austin, TX.

We were approaching the final phase of Anyma performances during last night’s Afterlife Milan. It was almost time for the iconic closing with “You Make Me” but, something changed. A new visual and song played before it.
Last night, Anyma, the solo project of Matteo Milleri (one-half of the renowned electronic duo Tale Of Us), premiered his official remix for The Weeknd‘s “Dancing in the Flames,” marking another milestone in Milleri’s impressive career.
The new remix takes listeners on a journey through progressive house landscapes. This latest work follows in the footsteps of his previous productions, reminding fans of the vibes from “You Make Me,” his unreleased collaboration with Rüfüs Du Sol that has been captivating audiences for over a year.
If you’re thinking that this collaboration between Anyma and The Weeknd was a bolt from the blue, you can’t be more wrong.
Anyma, The Weeknd and Alexader Weesely: a teamwork remix
In fact, Anyma’s influence extends beyond just music. Alongside Alexander Wessely, known for his work as creative director for Swedish House Mafia, Milleri has been at the helm of the creative visual direction for The Weeknd. Alexander Wessely worked on the creative direction of Month To A Flame, a Swedish House Mafia collaboration with The Weeknd.
The new visual for the remix of Dancing in the Flames reminds a lot of Alexander Wessely’s work with human bodies for the Swedish House Mafia It Gets Better and Redlight music video.
The circle seems closed now with Anyma and Wessely both collaborating with The Weeknd.
From his work with Tale Of Us to his solo ventures as Anyma, Matteo Milleri continues to push the boundaries of electronic music.
At the end of this year, Anyma has planned a series of already sold-out shows at The Sphere in Las Vegas. We are sure there will be some surprises there, including new music and new visual and, maybe, artists playing live alongside Anyma.

South London-based DJ and producer Just Geo has just unveiled his brand new album ‘TNTHY’. The album title, shorten from Try Not to Hurt Yourself to TNTHY, blends a number of styles and genres, showcasing the incredible talent and range that Just Geo holds as a producer.
The excitement for this album began when he dropped the first single, ‘Sweat It Out’, on August 28th. The single was a perfect opening introduction for what was to come as the Londoner would treat us to a groovy and rhythmic house single. ‘Tell Your Lies’ then followed one week later and that showcased another side to the producer as he would blend elements of garage with house.
“I’ve been trying to push myself out of my comfort zone a bit, I started making a name for myself producing pretty selfishly but I’ve always wanted to do more with vocalists and artists in general” Just Geo explains. “Like the majority of my stuff, the entirety of the production is all me in my studio so it’s a massive amalgamation of things I’ve wanted to experiment with or things people might not even know I could make but each track on this project is a song that tells it’s own story. It’s something I haven’t been able to do before… lucky to work with some great people on this so can’t wait for everyone to hear it” – said Just Geo on the making of this project.
Now, on September 20th, Just Geo unveiled the full album, a 2 disc, fifteen-track project that brings a unique blend of garage, house, grime and techno. Notable singles that showcase all of those elements are opener ‘Tell Your Lies’, ‘Step It Out’, ‘When You Remember’, ‘Always Gonna Be’, and ‘Days Go By’. The DJ Awards’ highly anticipated 23rd anniversary event takes place on October 2nd at Chinois, Ibiza. The ceremony will see category winners announced once all public votes are counted. Ahead of that, winners of the Industry Awards as chosen by a panel of experts can now be announced. 
Founded in 1998 by José Pascual and Lenny Krarup, the DJ Awards have long been recognised as the ‘Oscars for electronic dance music.’ Now under new ownership and with fresh investment after a four year hiatus, the awards make a welcome return and continue to champion excellence in global dance music.
Doors open at 10pm with awards ceremony taking place 11.30 to 12.30. BBC Radio 1 tastemaker Jaguar returns to present the awards alongside respected electronic music personality Katie Knight, a regular face in Ibiza, who will also be interviewing artists backstage after the ceremony while the after-party kicks off in the club at 12.30am
The winners of each of the voted for categories International DJ Of The Year 2024, Live Act, Breakthrough, House, Tech House, Drum & Bass, Techno, Progressive House, Organic House, Afro and Trance have been chosen by the public and will be announced on the night with nominees listed below. 
The reboot of the DJ Awards was always planned to recreate what’s been done before but better, which is why the number of awards has been reduced to 19 with a surprise award announced on the night. The new categories reflect the new state of the scene and also lay the foundation for the DJ Awards to expand its reputation and reach beyond Ibiza and promote dance music culture to a broader global audience while returning the integrity of the brand.
Interspersed with voted categories, the winners of these special Industry Awards will be presented with their trophies and they have been selected by a specially assembled team of industry professionals.

This award goes to anyone who has, over a long time, made a profound impact on the scene in Ibiza. Someone who has played multiple venues, grown with the success of the island, and given back to it in a social capacity. 
Cadenza boss Luciano is very much that man. He has DJed in the local prison, hosted talks at public schools, played every venue on the island, held legendary residencies, lived in Ibiza for years and made Spain his home. He has always stayed true to his art and will always be synonymous with the White Isle. 
He very much helped to transform the Ibiza scene from the early years of Ushuaia to the famous residencies at Pacha, bringing real underground quality and forward thinking sounds before anyone else. 
Ibiza Party of the Summer
David Guetta’s F*** Me I’m Famous at Ushuaia and Future Rave at Hi Ibiza 
This award does what it says on the tin. The success of a party isn’t judged by the number of attendees, it’s about the commitment to creating a unique experience, the loyalty to a venue and ability to showcase a wide spectrum of creative sounds and abilities and have a real impact on dancers. 
The famous Frenchman is the only DJ on the island to host two of his own parties and they are the only place he plays in the summer which is a throwback to how parties used to be run back in the day. They very much showcase different sides of his sounds – FMIF is more commercial and VIP lead, while Future Rave offers up and comers a chance to shine. Both events place huge attention on the production with dancers, performers and the VIP experience  all taken care of. 
Ibiza Track of the Summer

Historically, this has always been a track you hear in the day, at night, on the beach, in the super clubs. 
And that is certainly the case this year. This track has been played by everyone from all different musical backgrounds, in beach bars and in the main room, on terraces and at villa parties. It has had  more than 200 million streams on Spotify and crossed over into so many different worlds. It’s catchy, singalong and the true sound of summer.

Keinemusik 
This is a new category given to a brand or artists that have elevated themselves in the last year onto a whole new level of popularity and success. 
Keinemusik have done just that and have been everywhere this year playing standout sets in Ibiza but also hosting their own unique events under their iconic cloud. They are able to pull in crowds of up to 35000 people at festival sized events and they always sell out, such is their appeal to a wide range of clubbers from all musical backgrounds and ages. The trio have also done lots for up and coming artists., have remained true to their core and even recently raised 100, 000 euros for charity in Ibiza.
Global Festival 
Defected Croatia
This award is given to a festival that has been newly or re-established and is doing something fresh on a global scale such as invigorating a new territory, promoting a certain sound or genre and putting a scene or place on the map. 
Defected’s superb three day festival in Tisno, Croatia has done just that. It is loyal to the label’s famous house roots with a wonderful mix of established, new and upcoming artists. The audience is diverse in terms of age, gender and sexuality with local and international acts all featuring in a house-centric soundtrack that is both quintessential and cutting-edge.
Play It Back Award
Michael Bibi’s One Life Campaign 
This is an award given to a person, institution or event that has bettered the scene socially, charitably or in a humanitarian fashion. 
After his very public battle with central nervous system lymphoma and recent return to full health, Michal Bibi has put great focus on raising awareness about the rare form of brain cancer he suffered from. He has put a real spotlight on it with his One Life campaign and deserves great recognition. He has raised plenty of money including £124,832 made from his Finsbury Park takeover in London which went to Royal Marsden Cancer Charity but also has a policy of creating awareness at his events. That one in London had a stem cell transplant charity on site to help recruit attendees to sign up to the stem cell register. This forward thinking, positive, altruistic action has all been done from the dance floor up so makes Bibi a more than worthy recipient. 
Eye on… USA
Gospel New York 
This annual award shifts the focus onto a different territory, starting with America, the birthplace of house music. 
New York’s Gospel club has had great success in just a few short years. James Huddleston and Juriel Zeligman are the co-founders and the venue is well run with a great mix of regular guests doing their own promotions. It’s a great throwback to how the scene was when it was first born in the 80s with serious focus on the music and residents. The club is a great modern addition to the city but one that never forgets the roots of the scene. 
Dance Floor Moment
In the run up to the awards, people all over the world will have the chance to come to Ibiza dn collect a genuine DJ Award on stage with all the other winners. People have been uploading clips of their favourite dancefloor moments to instagram and tagging @thedjawards with the hashtag #DANCEFLOORMEMORY. This is the start of an annual campaign that will see us recognise the best moments every year of the people who make it all possible, the fans and clubbers of the world.

Alesso debuted at The Brooklyn Storehouse in grand fashion. Over 2 nights, he took New York by storm with his dazzling production and music. Alesso is a personal favorite of mine, his shows have always brought me incredible joy. He does a fantastic job of balancing his golden-age progressive sound with his club-ready modern records. For over 2 hours over 2 different nights, Alesso had thousands moving in Brooklyn.
Joining him on stage was AC Slater and John Alto. John kicked off the night and had the crowd warmed up nicely. AC Slater had the crowd in his hands as he moved and grooved them. The Bass House godfather has a grip on house music like no other. His new track ‘Brain On Drugs’ is so good to hear live!
The Brooklyn Storehouse is the perfect venue for dance music. Newly acquired by Broadwick & TCE, the Navy Yard venue has been around for years but never had an official name. The production is phenomenal within the venue with lights and lasers everywhere. The sound is really great as well.
It is a long warehouse which allows ample space if you like your room to dance. There are plenty of bars and bathrooms so rarely is there a need to wait. There is also a nice chill spot where you can still hear the music but take a seat if need be.
Alesso
Alesso has been debuting a new show concept this year called BODY HI. It is a deeper catalog of underground cuts as part of his new house and techno project. He debuted the project at Coachella’s famous Do LaB stage. Alesso dropped an impressive Hypnotize EP earlier this year that was filled with heat.
I have seen Alesso more times than I can count and this one was one of my favorite shows of his. Nothing beats the first time I saw him at EDC in 2017 though. Alesso stuck the perfect balance between his throwback records and his more intense and groovy house tracks.
He played all of his classics from ‘Heroes’ to his remix of ‘If I Lose Myself’ to ‘Calling‘ to ‘Pressure’. He also played his new track with David Guetta which is a calling to his past sound with a modern touch. He is one of the most special acts you can see in dance music and I highly recommend.

Amy Wiles is back in the studio with the release of the long-awaited Here I Am EP. By sheer coincidence, the five-track release is comprised entirely of female acts. Alongside Amy, who rocks the two solo tracks ‘For You’ and the title track ‘Here I Am’, Nourey, HANA, and Leena Punks all make an appearance this time, on the tracks ‘Human’, ‘Dreamland’, and ‘Sweet Feeling’ respectively.
‘Human’ has got something I can only describe as the sound I fell in love with when I first discovered Anjuna. I came to the label around 2015, so Progressive Trance was in full swing, and I can really see the link between Amy and Nour’s track and, say, a hybrid between Sunny Lax and the later years of ilan Bluestone. It’s got the groove, the vibe, the tension… everything.
Elephante & yetep feat. Daye – All We Get
Genre: Melodic Bass
Elephante and yetep are set to captivate fans with their latest collaboration, ‘All We Get,’ featuring the soulful vocals of Daye. The highly-anticipated single is out now on Elephante’s label, Hidden Horizon. This is the next look at Elephante’s evolving soundscape as it leads up to the release of his forthcoming album, Cope.

Gamer – GRX, Bassjackers
Martin Garrix has done several amazing collaborations under his GRX alias, but the first ever GRX track is one that not many people have come across. Released in 2013 on Doorn Records, ‘Gamer’ was an epic collaboration with fellow upcoming stars of EDM, Bassjackers, which took on a heavy big room house sound. Despite this songs powerful bass and really creative lead sound, it’s one of the very few songs by Garrix that has less than a million streams on Spotify. Take a trip back 11 years and have a listen to this hidden gem below.
Your Body (Martin Garrix Remix) – Christina Aguilera
It’s rare to see a Martin Garrix remix these days, however back in the early stages of his career he pumped out some incredible ones with his remix of ‘Your Body’ being possibly one of his best. Released as the closing track to the deluxe edition of Christina Aguilera’s album ‘Lotus’ this remix displayed the incredible talent of Garrix in the early stages of his career. With powerful melodies, creative structure, and masterful builds in tension he was able to show off his massive potential in what is a wildly underappreciated track.
Stellar (Martin Garrix Remix) – Daddys Groove
The year after the release of his remix of ‘Your Body’, he would come out with another thumping remix in the form of ‘Stellar.’ He managed to take the original progressive house feel of the track and transform it into an earthquake starting big room house banger that deserved a lot more attention than it got. Though this track may not have had big commercial success, it was another track that would gain Martin Garrix praise from fellow artists and would also start to establish his signature sound.
Alive – YTRAM
In 2020 Martin Garrix would unveil his new alias YTRAM which to date he has only released three songs under with one of them being ‘Alive.’ This enchanting piece of tech house is a long way from his usual sound, but the Dutch DJ takes to it with style producing an excellent track that unfortunately wouldn’t get much attention. The YTRAM alias wasn’t pushed much by Garrix and has since faded into obscurity, although he has announced a performance as YTRAM at the STMPD RCRDS label night later this year which could mean new YTRAM music.
Going Home – AREA21
It’s crazy to think that it took till 2021 for Martin Garrix to release his first album ‘Greatest Hits Vol.1’ under the alias of AREA21. AREA21 is the most successful of Garrix’s alternate aliases with most of the tracks garnering millions upon millions of streams, however at the end of the album there’s a track that seemingly flew under the radar. ‘Going Home’ is a truly touching track that has Garrix’s incredible euphoric energy with a fantastic vocal performance from Maejor that closes the album in emphatic style.

Another milestone has been hit by Avicci post-mortem. One of his most iconic tracks ‘Levels’ hit 1 Billion streams on Spotify. It marks his 6th track to do so. ‘Levels’ joins an impressive list to achieve this incredible feat.
‘Hey Brother’ hit one billion streams in May and ‘Wake Me Up’ reached two billion last August. ‘The Nights’, ‘Waiting For Love’, and ‘Without You’ have also all received this accolade. Avicii’s Instagram announced the news this week and had this to say:

We recently sat down with one of the legends of Electronic music for a chat.
Paul van Dyk has been a towering figure in the Electronic music scene for literal decades. His distinctive blend of genres and the different countless anthems he released during the golden era of Trance captured the hearts of millions worldwide, including the heart of who’s writing this piece.
Van Dyk’s journey began in the early 1990s when he started experimenting with production in his hometown of Berlin. His early work was heavily influenced by the evolving Techno scene, but he soon developed a unique sound that incorporated elements of Trance and House music, leading to defining records such as ‘For An Angel‘, ‘Nothing But You‘, and ‘Time Of Our Lives‘.
His influence on the music world extends far beyond his own craft. He has mentored countless young DJs and producers, and his work has inspired a new generation of artists. He’s also come up with a handful of concepts for his DJ sets. And that’s where his path crossed ours.
Not long ago, we had the chance to catch up with him before one of his VENTURE X sets, and we had a very interesting chat about topics such as Ibiza, the VENTURE X idea, and even what he thinks of the use of cell phones at shows. Keep reading to find out all the details of our exclusive interview with Paul van Dyk.
The Interview

Well, first of all, thank you for being here. So, let’s talk a bit about SHINE, your Ibiza residency. You have officially completed the first half of shows. What’s your balance on this year’s season so far? Did you have any expectations going in? And if so, were they fulfilled?
Well, my expectations are always great. And SHINE always lives up to it. It’s a very music-oriented event. People really come to listen to the music, to let go, to enjoy themselves. So, yeah, it’s phenomenal. It’s really exciting in a way, and the first half was fairly good. Obviously, the whole of Europe right now has a bit of a problem in terms of events, because first we had the Eurocup, and then we had the Olympics. So a lot of people also went to these places. Now that everything is over, everybody says Ibiza is going to be even better, with more traffic. So, let’s see how we go. I’m looking forward to being back in two weeks. And I’m playing a six-hour set. That’s always really special for me. So, I’m looking forward to that.
That’s great to hear. Well, as someone who has gone to play there year after year, how would you describe the Ibiza nightlife to someone who has never been there? What makes it so special? And is it as special as, say, 20 years ago?
Well, I wish I could say it is as special as 20 years ago. 20 years ago, and even 10 years ago, people who were kind of enjoying life, enjoying Electronic music, artists, in a positive way “crazy” people, they all went to Ibiza in the summer to celebrate life. And with the passing of time, around half of the island became more, I would say, kind of like a rich people’s playground. It became very, very expensive in parts of it. If you look at clubs like Hï (Ibiza) and Ushuaïa, as an example, and the stuff that’s going on there, you’ll see that’s just more like normal Pop music that’s being presented. So it’s not about music culture in that area. But you still find, you know, if you look at DC10, if you look at Eden, you still find the venues and the clubs where it’s all about the music, where it all revolves around what Ibiza is about. And besides all that, Ibiza is just a beautiful Mediterranean island. You should visit it if you can.
Great. Now, tonight you’re presenting VENTURE X, a fairly new project of yours focused on Techno and Progressive rather than just Trance. We’d love to hear it from you. What does VENTURE X mean to you? Why did you decide to create it? And just out of curiosity, why is it called that way?
Well, I’ll start with the name. A “venture”, as in, you venture somewhere. It’s almost like an adventure. And the X stands for “destination unknown”. So, I start with a clear idea, with a clear approach to where I want to go. And then I end up somewhere else. The thing is, you know, obviously in places like Chile or Argentina where I just come every once in a while, people want me to play ‘For An Angel’ and that kind of stuff. And at the end of the day, I’m here so that we create good memories, together. So, I’m pretty sure at the end of this show I will play some Trance as well because that’s what people who come to see me expect me to do somehow. But it will be a deeper, more proggy, techy approach to begin with and a different layout to start in, rather than just diving in straightforward. VENTURE X gives me the ability to explore different things. I mean, it’s like when I learned DJing. I turned to Electronic music at a time when it was just Electronic music. It wasn’t called Trance, Techno, this and this and this. So as a DJ, you just pick the music that inspired you and that you play. And that’s what I do with VENTURE X. I play things that I think are absolutely worth playing because they’re substantial, they’re good, and not just being stuck to one genre.
Thank you. Now, I bet you’ve seen changes over the years in how Trance and other genres you are part of are consumed. Are there any changes that you can recall right off your head? Something that perhaps you had to learn to work around during these years?
Well, the biggest, most extreme thing, obviously, the DJ was the freak in the corner while everyone else had fun back when I started. And then throughout the rise in popularity of Electronic music, people started running interviews with the DJs. Then came production, big stages, big festivals. Things have changed. And a lot of my colleagues have changed their approach to the music as well. What I can strongly say for me, from an artistical approach, is I have a very straightforward passion for Electronic music. And I do exactly what I think Electronic music should sound like, not just now, but also in four or five years. And I’ve seen throughout my career, many, many times, that something that I touch, something that I create now is popular later down the line, say, five years into the future, because others are picking it up and doing things with it. That’s some of the changes I’ve seen. And then something else, when, let’s say, big marketing corporations came in, they created products rather than artists. That changed a lot as well because, if you have multi-million-dollar companies promoting one individual and one certain sound, it has some sort of impact in one way or the other.
Thank you. Would you say longer tracks, those that tell a story and take you on a journey, are becoming harder and harder to introduce to the market in today’s era of short attention spans, as they’re calling it?
Well, it kind of is. Obviously, we live in the times of TikTok, so, you know, everything becomes shorter and shorter. At the same time, John 00 Fleming and I made a track together and called it ‘Against the Algorithm’ [still an ID] because there’s no way to shorten it. It is 11 minutes long and you have to listen to the 11 minutes, or leave it. And that’s also an artistic approach. There’s no way to shorten the sound. You need the journey, you need the layout of the music, you need to feel that drive of that piece of music. And if you don’t, then well, don’t. Listen to something else. All I’m doing is offering something, and you’re invited to join it, and you’re invited to enjoy it. Well, if you don’t, then don’t. Just listen to something else.
Exactly. Thank you. On to another topic, we talked with Ferry Corsten a few months ago and he introduced the concept of “Template Trance” or “Template Tracks”, if you will. This, referring to the amount of songs that basically sound the same today in the industry because of presets, sample packs, and so on. So, what’s your take on it? Do you feel these Template Tracks, as he calls them, are an issue in modern Dance music?
I have no idea what he’s talking about. I’m not using templates and I’m not playing music of artists who are using templates. Luckily enough, maybe the A&R team around me is really, really good and they’re sorting the shit out so I’m not listening to crap. But I don’t know what he’s talking about.
Thanks. Now, if you could go back, let’s say, 30 years in time and meet your past self, what would you tell him? Like, was there anything Paul of the past worried about much more than what was really necessary?
I probably would say something crazy like, “That one day you finished your noodle soup, you shouldn’t have because it was good”. [laughter]
And on that same note, let’s suppose there’s someone in our audience who truly admires you, looks up to you and all you’ve done as an all-round artist all these years. What would be the one piece of advice you would tell them to achieve success?
Don’t seek it. Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, with all your passion, with all your enthusiasm. And at the end of the day it’s like, without wanting to sound anyhow self-centred, when I’m in the studio, I make the music so it satisfies me, first of all. Because, here [at the club] or in a different scenario, I’m standing in front of people that have maybe never heard that piece of music I’m playing. And I need to bring across that it’s worth something, that it really means something. And I can only do that if I think so, if I did something that really convinced me. And so, my advice is just to do exactly what you want to do. Don’t copy your hero, don’t copy anyone else, because these people already exist. Do your own thing.
Thank you. This is a hot topic now. Phones? No phones? Some phones? Which side of the clubbing debate are you on?
Look, I think everyone should be allowed to do what they want to do. If you want to use your phone and record whatever you do, just do it. My advice is just like, if you have a good DJ in front of you, just close your eyes and follow the journey. Being there in the moment is much more important than maybe, back to the TikTok topic, having a 10-second clip to share. But at the end of the day, everybody should be able and allowed to do what they want to do. So I’m not in any way restricting anything.
And finally. As a veteran, not only of Trance, but the entirety of Dance music, much like an esteemed football player goes on to become a coach of new minds, do you consider yourself a coach as much as, or maybe even more than, a music producer these days? Which part do you wish to play in today’s scene?
Look, I’m not over-exaggerating my own position. I’m just doing whatever I want to do. And I’m in the lucky position that still, on a global scale, everywhere people sort of seem to enjoy what I do and still invite me to come and play for them. That makes me the happiest artist in the world. But if somebody wants to learn, somehow, from how I do things, what I do, fair enough. But I also don’t put myself on the podium and say, “So go, I have to teach you”. I don’t do that. I play my music. If you listen to it, if you have an open heart, you can soak it in. You know what I want to achieve with my music, because you’re going to feel it. But it doesn’t make any sense to talk about music, because you only end up talking about musical examples. You’re never going to do anything original. You can only actually play it and make it. And so therefore, whatever it is, if I’m still travelling around in 10 years or not, I will probably always make music, because it’s almost one of the languages I speak. It’s my way of communicating. That’s what I enjoy about this.
