It may sound far-fetched for rugged rugby players to swap scrums for turntables, but former England player-turned-DJ, James Haskell, says that's exactly what happened when he began learning the craft of DJing 11 years ago.
Haskell, along with other rugby players in New Zealand, would alchemize their post-match adrenaline into energetic DJ sets, picking up new skills and that ultimately gave him the confidence to land gigs.
Haskell's career as an international rugby player is now over, but his calling in the world of electronic music continues to pick up speed. He has performed across the globe from Dubai to Ibiza and continues to host his own radio show and podcast about DJing.
Haskell has now joined forces with Mark Knight, the influential Toolroom Records boss and recipient of the 2024 EDMA Icon Award, for his first release on the label, "Go Deep." Blending groove with grit, the house track is primed to heat up any dancefloor, as vocals by Chicago house music legend Gene Farris carry a soulful invitation to dance the night away.
EDM.com caught up with Knight and Haskell to discuss the collaborative process behind "Go Deep."
EDM.com: How did you two first meet?
Mark Haskell: It felt like it was meant to happen. James got involved with the Toolroom Academy early on, which I really respected because he understood the value of starting at the bottom and learning for himself instead of expecting others to do it for him. We first spoke online about a record, and I immediately thought, "We're going to be mates." I was already a fan of his as a rugby player and was keen to chat about sport. We started talking more, clicked as friends, and then he came down to the office to get involved with some projects.
James Haskell: We first connected on Instagram, back in 2018, during the very first Toolroom Academy course. I did the course, posted about it, and Mark commented and messaged me, saying to get in touch if I ever fancied a training session. After that, I’d often drop into the Toolroom office to say hi to the team. One time, while working with Luke Hemmings in the office, Mark and I hit it off, and it’s been like that ever since.
EDM.com: James, when did you realize you wanted to pursue DJing and what has the transition been like from international rugby player to DJ?
James Haskell: I’ve been DJing for about 11 years. It all started when I was in New Zealand during my rugby career. I met the managing director of Serato, who was helping a few All Blacks players, including Dan Carter, learn to DJ. I thought it sounded fun, so I gave it a go. Adam Thomson helped me get started, and I used to mess around on a controller after games. P Money even gave me a few lessons. When I got back to the UK, I found out Simon Dunmore was a fan of mine, and both Seb Fontaine and Jaguar Skills gave me some lessons.
I eventually did a course with SubBass and had my first gig at Ministry of Sound on the balcony. That’s when I fell in love with it.The transition, though, has been tough. Rugby opened some doors initially, but it’s also created challenges. People assume I’m just a "celebrity DJ," which couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve put in the work, playing tiny venues for little to no money. I’ve taken multiple courses and worked hard at producing music. I want to earn respect for my skills, not my profile.
EDM.com: James, do you draw any parallels between music and sports?
James Haskell: Absolutely. Everything I learned in rugby applies to music and DJing. It’s about working hard, going above and beyond, and breaking down every aspect of your craft. In rugby, we’d review matches to analyse what we did well and where we could improve. I take the same approach with DJing—watching my sets back, identifying what could be better, and constantly trying to improve. Resilience is key. You have to keep pushing, learning, and honing your skills.
Mark Knight (L) and James Haskell (R).c/o Press
EDM.com: Mark, tell us about your mentorship of James.
Mark Knight: I don’t really see it as a mentorship in the traditional sense. I’m happy to share everything I’ve learned over the years, but it’s more about mutual respect. James has a fantastic work ethic and a real hunger to succeed, which I admire. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, and I’m open about them, sharing what I’ve done right and wrong along the way.
What I love about James is his energy and authenticity. The dance music scene was built on raw passion and confidence, but over time, it’s become a bit elitist. James brings it back to that original spirit, where passion and drive are everything. If you’ve represented your country in sport at the highest level, you’ve already proven you can succeed under immense pressure. That kind of mindset translates to anything.
EDM.com: How did your song “Go Deep” come to be? When did you two decide you wanted to work on a track together?
Mark Knight: Like every record, it started with an idea. The first step was to have a conversation about what we wanted to achieve. We sat down, played a bunch of tracks, and landed on a clear direction. James led the production and really rolled up his sleeves. It was my concept initially, but we worked on it together. We brought Gene Farris in for the vocal, and it became a proper collaboration. James has invested a lot in learning from others, and that’s what makes him such a great collaborator.
James Haskell: Out of all the people I’ve met, Mark is one of the few who genuinely wanted to help. We’re both driven by a desire for success, and we connected over that shared mindset. I’m always keen to learn, so when Mark suggested we work on something, I jumped at the chance. He guided me heavily—quite ruthlessly, in fact—which I appreciated.
EDM.com: What is the collaborative process like between you two?
James Haskell: The process started with Mark sharing some reference tracks. He sent me away to do my homework and build a loop. Then I sat down with our engineer, James Hurr, to develop it further. Once we had something solid, Mark joined us, and we worked on it together. Gene Farris was the perfect choice for the vocal; he’s a legend, and he nailed it on the first take. It’s been a true team effort, and I’ve learned so much from Mark throughout the process.

When three masters of their respective craft align, the result is a statement-making effort.
Loco Dice, Skrillex and Fireboy DML have joined forces for "Heavy Heart," a near-six-minute blitz of underground house grooves, genre-bending production and vocals delivered with magnetic precision.
At its core, "Heavy Heart" remains tied to its underground roots through and through. The rhythm evolves constantly, from variations of wavy basslines to cackling one-shots and the psychedelic ping-pong of vocal chops. All the while, DML's words land with finesse, spoken like truths from a seasoned storyteller.
Every shift in the beat feels organic, as if the song itself is adjusting and growing to match the energy of its performers. Percussive hits punctuate the groove while quick vocal ad-libs add a human touch that grounds the track amidst its own sense of innovation.
"Heavy Heart" marks a new chapter for Dice. As the first release from an upcoming album in 2025, it's easy to see that it's a bold declaration of what’s to come from the acclaimed DJ and producer.

Hi! Who are you?
Will: Hello, my name is Will Anderson and I’m the owner and founder of Primitive
Jacob: I’m Jacob Eloquin, Co-director of Primitive alongside Will. Just the two of us at the moment but we hope to expand the team as we grow.
What’s your ethos?
Will: Our ethos has always been to create a multi genre brand that represents underground music. A platform for upcoming artists to express their individuality.
Tell us your origin story…
I started Primitive while at college studying music production and DJ technology. One of my final assignments was to either create an EP or put together a low budget event. Realising that I wasn’t actually very good at producing, I opted to put on an event. I ended up hiring the Horsham rugby club, booked some artists and hosted their first ever drum and bass event. I think we went over capacity by about 100 people- all thanks to my mum being on the door! This was the first project involving the Primitive name. I chose it because it means the character of an early stage in the evolutionary/historical development of something. I carried on hosting events and then a year later decided to turn it into a label as well.
From the age of 15 I began DJing and played the majority of parties around Horsham, some of the parties were incredible, even the painfully awful ones have left jokes memories. It was during this time that I first met Jacob.
Jacob: I knew Will in Horsham but as he was a few years above me, when he threw his first events I wasn’t old enough to get in as I was under 18! I had just started college but had the same ambition of pursuing music as a career, mainly in music production. I reached out to Will and bought my first pair of Numark controllers from him, he then ended up teaching me how to mix on CDJs.
From around 2018 we started DJing parties together. We built a fairly solid reputation in Horsham and are notorious for playing the best events in Sussex, including a literal Project X party which attracted thousands of people and resulted in a disowned son after the parents found out the state of the house… Since then we’ve had a few years of travel, uni, then Covid and dealing with being in two separate cities which was hard. However in the last year alone, we have garnered multiple Radio 1 plays and some serious recognition from DJs around the world.
Tell us about your local scene…
We are based in Horsham, bang in between Brighton and London. I’d love to say we have great nightlife but the only club we had shut down a few years ago, it played cheesy pop music and it was terrible, but somehow you’d always end up there. Then when you were in, it would take you hours to leave as it had the stickiest floor known to man!
Jacob: Our town doesn’t really cater for nightlife at all, there are two bars open till 2am but the music is awful. The best memories are when we did a mini festival on our mate’s farm called ‘Edgalfest’, we set up a stage, lasers and sound system and got Freddie Martin and Bushbaby to come and play which was such a fun night. We have had a fair few artists break through out of Horsham though: Sota, Degs, Hologram, Low:r and even the label Overview.
Will: It is unreal to see, we hosted a charity event with all of those acts two years ago. Obviously those artists are within the drum and bass world, but there’s also a wicked rapper called JAEBO we work with closely, and also an upcoming UKG artist called Nuffsedd to keep tabs on.
Do you have a specific sound or vibe?
Jacob: We’ve always been a multi-genre label but started off within bass house and drum and bass as that’s mainly what I started out producing, along with all the other artists we knew. As we’ve grown up and since mid 2023 especially, we’ve moved into UKG, bass and breaks. We felt these genres coincide with each other a lot better when mixing.
Will: It was hard to really nail down what we wanted to release, it was all so messy when we first started, we had no structure or any idea what we were doing. We loved all electronic music, which is great, but yeah we weren’t really getting anywhere and that meant we didn’t really fit in or have an aesthetic locked down. After a few years with personal mental health issues, I think we both looked at Primitive in a new way and realised the sounds we wanted to push. Not saying we are big and successful by any means but I personally think it’s a lot clearer now with a set branding in place. We will always release what we love first and foremost, the adaptability between genres as well is unreal, I don’t think we could ever stick to one sound.
Do you have a regular artist roster- who can we see releasing with you?
Will: We definitely have some artists we will always release with now. Acts like After Hours, Charlie Shell, PRESTi, Nicche and Eloquin have become an integral part of our recent successes this year. Of course we are always on the hunt for new talent but it also comes down to how well you work with the artist and their level of commitment and communication. We want the best for our acts and their releases, we know we’ve done our job when their releases are being played out, charting on Beatport and streaming well.
Jacob: Having started releasing music in 2018, we’ve watched a few artists break into the scene, most notably MPH and Silk, both acts who have released with us in the past. We are hoping to continue to help elevate artists.
Tell us about your A&R process…
Jacob: Releasing music under Eloquin has allowed me to be involved in the scene from the ground up by attending events and networking. Whether it is through collaboration, connecting online or in person, I just speak to them and share music and then if something really stands out I would ask if they would be keen to release it on Primitive.
Will: We still have a submission email as well at [email protected], we’ve honestly found some absolute gems. Jacob being an artist as well and naturally networking with other acts has really helped. We will also directly message some acts as well to see if they’d like to work on anything for us.
What makes you different from other labels?
Will: There are so many incredible labels out there but for us, on a more personal level, we’ve luckily known from early on that being involved in music is all we’ve wanted. I never conformed well to the education system, I failed school with basically no GCSE’s, I dropped out of college twice and then inevitably dropped out of uni. Being creative is all I wanted and I could never see myself trapped doing something I didn’t love. I think this is where Primitive stemmed from, pushing something that we have control over, it allows us to express ourselves as well as helping others.
At twenty-five I was diagnosed with ADHD and it all kind of aligned for me then. It was like the biggest weight off my shoulders and I could finally breathe. Putting myself first and battling through depression allowed my creativity to then blossom. Since we’ve grown up and both faced issues, Primitive has gone from strength to strength.
Jacob: What truly sets Primitive apart is that we know we aren’t the biggest label, we like being the underdog that finds unknown artists and gives them a platform to shine and often go on to achieve bigger things. At its core, it is just two mates who love music working towards their shared vision. These relationships naturally evolve beyond that release often resulting in long lasting friendships while maintaining the professionalism essential for growth. We have had our fair share of challenges, lost so much money, made many stupid mistakes. But, we’ve kept going and learned from everything. We are building a community that encompasses all from those who love listening, to those who want to learn to produce, to those who want to DJ their first event. We aim to help anyone with the ambition to achieve their goals.
Will: We understand how hard this industry can be and we are still very new to it all. We are nowhere near where we want to be but this is something we love and we are very happy with the progression this label has made in the past year. We are just two lads who have a passion for music, who also want to see other people succeed and be happy. Got a bit deep there, but I think that shows the difference in who we are running this brand. We understand the type of issues that can occur from pursuing this type of career.
What does it take to run a bass music label in 2024?
Will: Everything changes so fast that you have to be adaptable and get humbled every now and again, we are still figuring that out. If you’re starting anything out, whether you’re a label, promoter or artist etc, be prepared to fail over and over. I actually started Primitive in 2016 but it never really got rolling until last year. I do however feel bass music has been the best it’s ever been, despite the general struggle with nightlife and venues sadly shutting down, the output of music has been incredible.
Jacob: It’s definitely hard to run a small independent label when the input of funds has come solely from us. It takes a lot of grit, determination and passion to weather the music industry, especially when relying on algorithms to be able to reach new audiences which sometimes feels like nothing is working. You need to be consistent and try different techniques to find what works for you. It’s not easy, but fundamentally I believe that the music speaks volumes and if that is solid then the rest will fall into place.
What have you got coming up we should look out for?
Will: Consistent releases and more events next year, limited run of dubpacks and merch, we will see where that takes us.
Jacob: We are working on a huge charity USB project with tons of perks for members who are in our community. I would also love to start a podcast talking about mental health in the industry as well as I don’t think that is touched on enough.

Lauren Mia is forging a bold new path in her creative ventures with the launch of her own record label, Halcyon Records. The Los Angeles native and rising force in melodic techno has slated the launch of the imprint for early 2025.
Mia’s career has been defined by her ability to blend timeless techno influences with a forward-thinking creative ethos, and her latest endeavor is no exception. The launch of Halcyon promises to be a home for music that channels the raw spirit of 90's rave culture through a modern lens.
The label's Berlin-inspired aesthetic stems from a transformative period in Mia's journey. Earlier this year, she says, she immersed herself in the city’s storied club scene, where minimalist beats and analog textures sparked a deeper appreciation for dance music’s raw, unfiltered origins. Halcyon will be her platform to explore these influences on her own terms, presenting a carefully curated roster of music that resonates with the spirit of underground culture.
"I found it fascinating to hear these old-school trends resurfacing in the clubs and resonating with younger generations, which motivated me to infuse my own perspective into this revival," Mia explains. "As a female electronic music producer and DJ, I aim to celebrate and reimagine the timeless spirit of that vibrant musical landscape with Halcyon."
The venture is named after her new single "Halcyon," which marks her debut release on Armin van Buuren's venerated Armada label. You can listen to the new track below and find it on streaming platforms here.

1788-L's ominous new project feels less like an EP and more like an urgent transmission from the ambitious fringes of sound design.
With NU-TYPE vol. 1, the producer has inked his first release on Rezz's HypnoVizion label. And it doesn't just simply just push the envelope—it obliterates it with a barrage of seismic basslines and genre-defying song structures.
The project's opening salvo, “Wartype” (with Quackson), sets the tone with thunderous, cinematic impacts that evolve into a frenzy of growling horns. Like a war machine powering to life, the track explodes into spitfiring hi-hats and a grinding bassline that feels as relentless as a storm.
On "Wasp.exe," a cascade of slippery synths dances over a gritty trap beat before the track takes a jaw-dropping pivot into drum & bass. Marked by an ankle-breaking beat switch, the track feels like a controlled free-fall paired with the precision programming of a finely tuned machine.
On "Nanoblade," incendiary bass growls and sharp synth stabs dominate 1788-L's soundscapes in an exploration of drum & bass bearing the kind of unrelenting energy that feels tailor-made for the dancefloor. The track’s intensity peaks in moments where snarling basslines collide with rapid drum programming, each sound element locked in a tense struggle.
The EP's closing track "Prismtech" is an offering that feels like a dark, mechanical ballet. Its industrial textures swirl through the mix, pushing 1788-L’s creative limits in a finale that encapsulates the EP’s theme: uncompromising innovation.

Carly Wilford is back with a new single, "Loveline," a house stunner with lyricism that blurs the line between desire and delusion.
Her latest track transforms personal torment into a hypnotic, rhythmic exploration of connection—beautiful yet utterly consuming. She manages to weave a powerful storyline through its palpitating four-on-the-floor beat, capturing the visceral ache of a love that exists only in shadowy mental spaces—part memory, part hallucination.
Wilford's propulsive production drives the arrangement with urgency as its lyrics notch up the tension, drifting between yearning and surrender with a compelling fragility. Slicing through dark, churning basslines, the vocals unearth a vulnerability that's almost unsettlingly intimate.
The repeated refrain about being "out of my mind" suggests an infatuation that's simultaneously an escape and a form of temporary madness—a vicious internal power struggle we've all experienced when chasing love.
"Loveline" is out now via Armin van Buuren's venerable Armada Music imprint. Check out the new single below.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to experience Maverick Helicopters’ Sky Trip experience which took me into the sky to enjoy the cityscape views of Long Beach and an aerial view of Dreamstate SoCal Festival.
Since I opted for the trip which embarked from the festival, I met with very friendly staff members at the Maverick Helicopter booth inside the festival who checked me in. After a short wait, another crew member golf carted me back to the main office where I was handed a safety flier. After reading it, it was time to walk out to the helicopter where I was given an opportunity to do a quick photo op.
As I entered the Maverick EcoStar (EC-130) which is built from the ground up for sightseeing, I was excited for the experience to unfold. As I sat inside, I noticed that the EcoStar is equipped with front-facing stadium-style seating. This, combined with full wraparound windows, guarantees that every seat is the best in the house. The pilot briefly gave out further instructions and it was finally time for takeoff. As the helicopter ascended, the city lights of Long Beach twinkled below, giving way to the expansive darkness of the night sky. The anticipation grew as the Queen Mary came into view, its majestic silhouette illuminated by the festival’s vibrant lights. The pilot would make a couple circles around so that everyone could take in the views and take as many pictures and videos as they wanted. Something I appreciated about the tour was that the pilot offered brief history explanations of everything that we were seeing.
View of the Festival
The bird’s-eye view of the Dreamstate grounds was nothing short of breathtaking. The sprawling stages, pulsating with music and energy, were a mesmerizing sight. The thousands of attendees, a sea of glowing lights, created a breathtaking spectacle. The helicopter circled the venue, offering a panoramic view of the festivities. The flight itself was smooth and comfortable, thanks to the skilled pilot and luxurious helicopter.
Overall, the Maverick Helicopter ride to Dreamstate SoCal was an unforgettable experience. It elevated the festival experience to new heights, offering a unique perspective and a VIP entrance. It’s an absolute must for any Dreamstate attendee seeking a truly extraordinary adventure.
For anyone that may be interested in riding the helicopter next year, they can visit their official website here. Maverick Helicopters also offer their services at other festivals such as Daytrip in Long Beach and EDC in Las Vegas. Their services can also be sought out for Maui, the Grand Canyon, and California offering tours.

In her new EP ‘Eye Contact’, Italian producer, multi-instrumentalist and live music innovator Giorgia Angiuli explores themes of spirituality, creativity, and meditation. The EP spans across five tracks ranging from techno to psytrance. At its heart is the title track—a long-awaited collaboration with UK-based producer Juliet Fox—from which the EP draws its name.

United by a shared vision of fostering unity and freedom through a blend of their unique styles, the pair crafted ‘Eye Contact’. The intent is to guide listeners on an immersive journey through rhythm, sound, and transcendence. Angiuli adopted a fluid, hybrid approach to the EP’s production unlike any of her previous projects. It allows the music to move organically and resonate both physically and emotionally.

Across ‘Break The Dawn’, ‘Nothing is Far’, ‘Nietzsche’, ‘A Good Addiction’, and now ‘Eye Contact’, each track builds on swift arpeggios, hypnotic synth stutters, and suspenseful vocals. This creates an entrancing and deeply meditative listening experience.
A strong advocate for women’s empowerment, Angiuli also launched a remix contest exclusively open to female artists in partnership with Change the Beat. It is a non-profit organization that supports underrepresented voices in electronic music.

Undoubtedly one of the creators of melodic techno, Danish maestro Kölsch returns with a moving and deftly created remix of “Hollow,” a potent collaboration between dance music titans MORTEN and ARTBAT including the beautiful vocals of Bonn.
Published on Insomniac Records, this remix transforms the soaring, anthemic sound of the original into something equally grandiose but quite introspective.
Kölsch’s rendition of “Hollow” embraces emotional depth but the original, throbbing, synth-driven intensity appropriate for peak-time sets shines. Starting with rich, sad piano chords that reflect Bonn’s honest words, the remix creates a sound tapestry of dazzling melodies and varied ambiance. The tune develops into an emotional trip, well suited for morning events on the dancefloor when the world seems still and endless.
This remix is evidence of Kölsch’s capacity to give every project a fresh emotional life rather than only a musical gift. His unique sound enhances Bonn’s honest lyrics, therefore enabling words to become whirling sonics, tugging at the heartstrings yet still commanding the dancefloor.
Kölsch has a close relationship with MORTEN and ARTBAT. With their own explosive remix of Kölsch’s “All That Matters,” last year ARTBAT turned the vocal-heavy track into a techno symphony that enthralled listeners all around. Kölsch’s two-decade connection with MORTEN has established a mutual respect and creative synergy, therefore making this cooperation both natural but also unique.

As we approach the final month of the year, many look back on the past and lose sight of what lies ahead. But that’s not the case for Paradono TM, who is doing both—celebrating his achievements while gearing up for an even brighter future. With his latest release, ‘FIRE’, the artist caps off a remarkable year and builds anticipation for his upcoming EP.
Paradono TM launched his artist project in 2024 after years of producing music for other artists. This bold leap into the spotlight proved to be the right move. He debuted with ‘New Day’, a track that set the tone for his distinctive style and marked the beginning of a streak of songs. In just one year, he has released seven singles, with ‘FIRE’ being the grand finale of an already impressive catalog.
‘FIRE’ is an electrifying anthem featuring powerful vocals, high-energy production, and captivating melodies. With its progressive house vibe and a long, tension-building second drop reminiscent of Swedish House Mafia, the track is a testament to Paradono TM‘s talent for creating music that resonates both on festival stages and in personal playlists. Whether you’re dancing under the lights or listening through headphones, ‘FIRE’ is designed to ignite the energy within you.
But Paradono TM isn’t stopping here. With 2024 as his breakout year, he’s already promising that 2025 will be even bigger and better. If ‘FIRE’ is any indication, the future is blazing bright for this rising star.

In an exclusive conversation with EDMHouseNetwork, Ben Nicky reflects on his genre-defying set at Transmission Bangkok, his evolution as an artist, and the emotional core of his music. Known for seamlessly blending trance, psytrance, and hard dance, Ben Nicky shares insights into his unique approach, the inspiration behind his Emotional Havoc set, and his unwavering commitment to creating unforgettable moments for fans worldwide. Whether it’s a packed festival arena or a local club, Ben Nicky’s rollercoaster sets continue to redefine the live music experience.
It’s so good to have you here on behalf of Bangkok fans and EDM House Network and love how you brought your Emotional Havoc set to Transmission. How do you feel about that?
It was great. I’ve been to Bangkok DJing many times and I’ve played for Transmission many times but it’s like tonight wasn’t full trance but also not hard. I wanted to play to the crowd here because you’ve got a lot of trance and edm fans so I didn’t want to go too underground. It was kind of like a normal Ben Nicky set where there are lots of genres in one but still on the edge of trance and keeping to my Emotional Havoc set. But it wasn’t 100 percent Emotional Havoc because if you watch ASOT or my UK sets they’re a lot more trance. I play to the crowd and they went mad. I play for the crowd, that’s my job so I want to make people happy. I kinda go with how the reactions are and it worked.
Speaking of Emotional Havoc, what inspired you to create this set which is vastly different from your Misfits set?
My original brand back in 2015 was called Headfuck and it was about taking emotional music and giving it a crazy hard drop and mixing genres like uplifting trance with dirty techno drops. If I’m honest, Misfits is the same. Emotional Havoc is just a nicer word than Headfuck, and a more brandable and PG word. Nothing has changed, it’s just the mixing up of a couple of genres.
Some of your sets resonate with fans not because of the commercial music but because it invokes emotions. How does that make you feel when you see fans resonating?
I’ve been doing this for a long time. People don’t say this a lot. We’ve been on aeroplanes our whole life so sometimes you’re jetlagged and you’re just doing it very often, playing similar tunes so when you see people react that’s what really makes you realize why it’s so important and why it’s so worth doing. Sometimes when you’re tired and you see someone sing along and connecting with someone in the crowd makes it so much more worth it. The crowds are always so reactive during my sets, so it makes it so much more worthwhile and I would never change that, I love it.
You blend elements of trance, psytrance, hard dance like you did tonight at Transmission Bangkok, so how do you approach fusing all these together?~
To be honest I have a certain formula in my sets and I don’t tell anyone how I do it. It’s not that I wrangle all the tunes together and it kind of comes out. I hyperfocus on my sets so I spend a lot of time on intro and outro moments and I never put it online, but I do make edits in a certain way that flow in a certain key and it resonates with emotions. I have this kind of intuitive way of making my music and I never ever give away how I do it because you might hear I’ll go from a very hard track then back to slow and it’s quite hard to do that because you have to give it a lot of reverb and sometimes you have to cut and make edits from one bmp to another. Normally djs do that, they start at a slow bpm and as the set goes on it gets harder and harder but for me it’s a bit of a rollercoaster. So my brand is very much a journey but something I’m very protective of because I’m the only DJ doing it like a rollercoaster.
Next, I would like to know what you think about Asia in terms of its crowd seeing as you’ve performed across the content multiple times?
The Asian market is very different. Some DJs are only big in certain markets but I feel I’m really privileged to be able to play big shows around the whole world and have a big fan base. But when it comes to Asia, you really have to understand the Asian market. For example, in Indonesia, it’s all table clubs so you don’t really have a dance floor so everyone sits and watches you DJ. My friends who are new to it don’t really understand it, they think they’re terrible because no one danced, but it’s normal. You have to understand that Asia is very different. Take Jakarta for example, which has an amazing scene right now. Kuala Lumpur too, which is probably one of the top cities in terms of fan engagement and how they’re on another level. Marquee Singapore is one of my favourite clubs in the world. Asia is good but you have to understand the market and the needs. I consider myself very lucky to be able to play here and get the reactions that I do.
Looking ahead, what’s next for Emotional Havoc, Misfits and your whole journey?
I don’t know right now, but we’re taking Misfits to another level so we’re now doing major arenas. Creamfields UK for example this year had one of the biggest arenas and I was able to host my Misfits brand there. We’re now hosting a lot of festival arenas via Misfits and I think we’ll start doing a lot more of those. Everything else will definitely be bigger.
Do you have any final messages for your fans and thoughts about Transmission tonight?
I’ve been doing this a long time and I really appreciate everyone. My music isn’t about having commercial hits in the charts but when it comes to DJing, I will never let people down. If you go to a festival and know a Ben Nicky set, you know it will never let you down and I guess that’s why I’m sitting here right now.
Thank you so much for your time today and your set.

Spotify has become the latest service to integrate with Google’s Gemini AI through its Gemini Extension, marking a significant step in enhancing user convenience and music accessibility. Following the rollout of the WhatsApp Gemini Extension, Spotify now joins the lineup of third-party integrations, bringing powerful “play & search” functionality similar to what is found on YouTube Music. However, this new feature is currently exclusive to Android users.
How It Works
To use the Spotify Gemini Extension, you need to connect your Spotify account to your Google Account. Once linked, you can interact with Gemini via simple commands, such as asking it to play, search, or browse music on Spotify. Here’s how to set it up:
Link Your Spotify Account: If your account isn’t already connected, the Gemini app will prompt you with the option to connect. Follow the Instructions: On-screen steps guide you through the linking process. Issue Commands: Once set up, you can ask Gemini to play specific songs, albums, playlists, or even search for music based on lyrics or genres. What It Can Do
Gemini’s Spotify Extension supports commands like:
“Play music for [activity] on Spotify.” “Search for the song that goes [lyrics].” “Find a Spotify playlist with [genre] music.” However, there are limitations. For instance, the feature cannot create playlists or radio stations on Spotify. Also, if multiple music services are connected, Gemini defaults to the last used one unless specified.
Current Limitations
Platform Availability: The Spotify Gemini Extension is not yet visible in the Extensions list on Android for most users. Additionally, it is unavailable on Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or iPhone. Language Support: For now, it only works when Gemini’s language is set to English. Subscription Requirement: Spotify Premium is necessary to play specific tracks. Broader Context
This rollout is part of Google’s gradual deployment of five new Gemini Extensions, including integrations with WhatsApp, Phone, and Messages. While some services, like Google Home, have achieved broader availability, most are still in early stages of release.
Spotify’s integration with AI marks another step in blending AI-driven personalization with music streaming, offering users a smarter and more streamlined way to enjoy their favorite tracks. With the feature expected to expand over time, it’s clear that Spotify and Google are working to redefine how we interact with music and smart assistants.

2Spade releases his second EP ‘H₩OARANG’ under K-Pop major SM Entertainment’s electronic imprint, ScreaM Records, as the talented artist continues rising through the global EDM and dance music scene. 2Spade first took the bass and trap scene by storm, making a name for himself through his prolific output and releases with labels such as Sable Valley, Dim Mak, and Circus Records, culminating in his debut EP ‘Shadow’ to tell the story of “becoming 2Spade”.
With his second EP, 2Spade showcases his musical range with a much more vibrant dance and groove focused sound, while keeping his signature sound blending influences across hip-hop and dance music. The EP features distinctly Asian influences along with influences from the OG SoundCloud trap a decade ago, notably following 2Spade’s releases earlier this year of Asian-inspired anthems, such as ‘Patala’ with past12 on Yellow Claw’s label Barong Family and ‘Dragon Dance’ on UZ’s label Quality Good Records, as well as official remixes for K-Pop stars such as aespa and NCT 127. The EP also follows 2Spade’s tours across Asia in countries such as Japan, Thailand, and Myanmar and his Ultra Korea debut this year.
With the premiere of his ‘H₩OARANG’ EP, we sat down with 2Spade for an exclusive interview:
The Interview
First off, congrats on the release of your second EP! Could you tell us more about the story that you wanted to tell through it?
Thank you! Before starting the story, I want to talk about the name “2Spade”. 2Spade represents two “spades” each with their own identities “Hwoarang” and “Asura” – where Hwoarang represents a hero and Asura represents a shadow. This world-building through these identities originate from my duality as a person, which I wanted to channel into my artistry. I chose “Spade” because I thought the single Ace of Spades looked cool before deciding to base it on the 2 of Spades as the strongest card in the Asian poker game “Big 2”.
Can you tell us more about the Hwoarang identity and sound?
So throughout my life, I’ve felt like I had to “fight to survive” – you know, to just take on all of the hard things in life that you need to in order to reach your dreams. But I also learned that I can “live to thrive” – to also enjoy life, have fun, and good vibes. So this is reflected in the two personas of 2Spade, and Hwoarang represents my lifestyle. I listen to a lot of music genres such as hip-hop, R&B, pop, world music, and jazz. I also attend a lot of techno, tech house, and hip-hop music parties, because there’s not many bass music shows in Korea. So through Hwoarang, I wanted to incorporate my lifestyle into my music and express my artistic desires in a way that I couldn’t fully do through just bass music. Even before the EP, I’ve been releasing a lot of music through my ‘HWOARANG Hypeboi & Loverboi” flip series to showcase this sound.
Your EP features a lot of Asian influences, can you tell us more about that?
Of course, through my Hwoarang persona, I really wanted to define myself to the world as Korean and as Asian. The name Hwoarang means “Flower warrior” and refers to a group from the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla, of handsome young warriors who trained their minds and bodies, wrote poetry, and sang songs (essentially ancient Korean warrior idols). My interest in Hwoarang grew after I learned one of my ancestors was the leader of thousands of Hwoarang warriors, which made me proud and inspired to integrate my Korean roots into my music identity.
As an Asian artist, even though so many people in Asia listen to electronic music today and there are so many big EDM festivals, usually headliners are all from US and Europe, never from Asia. I’ve been touring a lot around Asia and many Asian fans often tell me how they are proud to see someone from Asia like me doing what I’m doing and taking my music to the world. This inspires me to achieve my dreams so that others can believe that they can too.
You released your EP with SM Entertainment, can you tell us about working with a K-Pop major?
Even though there are few international Asian music stars in EDM, there are many through K-Pop. SM Entertainment is one of the biggest K-Pop music companies and also has the most focus on electronic music through their label ScreaM Records. ScreaM Records has released a lot of remixes of K-Pop songs by really dope artists like Nitepunk, ZHU, Habstrakt, and Valentino Khan through their iScreaM remixes. ScreaM Records has also been focused on rising Asian electronic artists too, and I’m really grateful to the ScreaM team for all their support in my vision. I’m excited to be joining them for the first ScreaM label tour in December!
OK back to the EP, could you tell us about the story?
So H₩OARANG is the first chapter showcasing my Hwoarang identity. To capture the Hwoarang lifestyle, I drew inspiration from five distinct times of the day – morning, noon, evening, night, and dawn – and translated that into music. I imagined what I would want to listen to when I wake up, leave my house at noon, meet up with friends in the evening, partying at a club at night, and finally going to sleep at dawn – a day in the life of Hwoarang.
Last question, post EP what’s next for you?
I’m really excited to be flying to the US next month for a SM Entertainment / ScreaM Records label tour. It’ll be my first time touring North America, and I’m excited to meet fans in each city and to showcase my Hwoarang sound on tour.
Also I know many of my long-time fans miss the bass music I used to frequently upload on SoundCloud. I’m still making bass music and will be back with my best yet. My next release will be a full “2Spade style” EP on Barong Family to continue my story, and I’ll also plan to showcase the full “Asura” sound in the future too. My journey as an artist is really just beginning, and I hope many people can join me on this journey and enjoy following my story. Thank you!

Nvidia has pulled off a trick unheard of! The computer chip giant has added to their artificial intelligence contributions. It has developed a new generative AI audio model that can “produce sounds never heard before.” Named Fugatto, the model can synthesize “high-quality singing voices” from text inputs. Nvidia quotes its new technology as “a Swiss Army knife for sound”.

Fugatto stands for Foundational Generative Audio Transformer Opus 1. Nvidia claims it is able to generate, transform and manipulate sound using text and audio prompts. This creates sounds like a trumpet barking or a saxophone meowing. The main capabilities of Fugatto is inclusive of creating music snippets from text prompts. It can also modify existing songs by adding or removing instruments, changing voice characteristics like accent and emotion, and generating entirely novel sounds.

Nvidia exhibited the capabilities of Fugatto in a video, highlighting how users can generate sounds through prompts like: “Create a sound where a train passes by and becomes a lush string orchestra.” Fugatto also allows users to isolate voices from songs, among other features, as per the video. Fugatto uses ComposableART, a method that enables users to mix instructions not originally seen together during training. This indiactes users can request complex audio transformations, such as ‘text spoken with a sad feeling in a French accent’, as clarified by Nvidia.

Nvidia also quoted that its research team from India, Brazil, China, Jordan and South Korea spent over a year developing a dataset containing millions of audio samples to develop Fugatto. It can be applied in multiple industries including music production, advertising, language learning and video game development, as per Nvidia.
