Tech giant Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has launched a brand-new video editing application called Edits. Released on Tuesday, April 22nd, this app is seen by many as a direct competitor to CapCut, the popular video editing tool owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. The launch comes at a time when video editing software from Chinese companies is facing increased scrutiny in the United States, potentially positioning Meta’s Edits as a key alternative.
Available now for both iPhone and Android users, Edits offers a range of tools designed to help people create engaging videos for various online platforms. The development of Edits was first announced by Meta in January, shortly after CapCut was briefly removed from app stores in the US amidst a temporary ban on TikTok. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, stated at the time that Meta’s goal was to provide the best possible tools for creators, regardless of ongoing events.
Mosseri also mentioned that Edits will include sections for finding inspiration, keeping track of ideas, a high-quality camera feature, all the expected editing tools, the ability to share drafts with others, and detailed insights for videos shared on Instagram.
While all features are currently free to use, Meta has indicated that future versions of Edits might include some premium features that users would need to pay for. Mosseri explained that this could help cover the costs associated with advanced features, such as those powered by artificial intelligence. However, the company aims to keep as many features free as possible to encourage widespread creation.
Adding another appealing element for creators, Meta announced plans to expand the music options within Edits, including the addition of ‘royalty-free’ music. This follows Meta’s previous move in October 2022 to offer royalty-free music for advertisers using Reels ads. Meta also has existing agreements with major music labels like Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group, allowing them to earn from licensed music used in creators’ content.
