The Meadows In The Mountains Festival in Bulgaria has announced its cancellation for this year, citing significant financial difficulties that will lead to a bankruptcy filing. The festival organizers broke the news on Friday, April 25, via social media, stating that the event, originally scheduled for August 14-18, will no longer take place.
In a heartfelt message, the team described the announcement as “mortifying” and the “hardest letter we’ve ever had to write“. A more detailed statement on their website revealed that persistent financial pressures from previous years have resulted in over €400,000 in accumulated debt. They explained that a series of unfortunate events over the past two years had created insurmountable challenges.
This is the second consecutive year the festival has been called off. In 2024, the cancellation was attributed to a lack of necessary permits from local authorities. The organizers also disclosed that in 2023, “serious personal allegations” led to the departure of key production team members. Despite these issues, the 2023 event proceeded, leaving over €150,000 unpaid to crew and service providers, a debt now part of the impending bankruptcy proceedings.
The cancellation has triggered anger among ticket holders, particularly those awaiting refunds from the axed 2024 event. While the festival assured that refunds for this year’s tickets would be processed automatically, reimbursement for 2024 tickets hinges on the success of future ventures. The team expressed deep regret, stating, “We understand how disappointing this is, and we’re deeply sorry,” and promised transparency regarding any future developments.
Founded in 2011 in the Rhodope mountains near Sofia, Meadows In The Mountains has hosted numerous artists over the years. The news marks a somber moment for the festival community.
