With her new EP, Linney reminds us why we dance: not to forget, but to remember differently.
The red-hot producer and singer-songwriter blends haunting house beats with introspective lyricism in We Dance, which reimagines the dancefloor as a space where the spirits of past pain pirouette with present joy. She brilliantly invites us to join this dance—not as spectators, but as active participants in our own healing.
"To me, this record is about music having the ability to transform tragedy and turn it into something beautiful," Linney says. "Dance music has a pulse that imitates the heart and reminds me to keep moving through whatever I'm dealing with."
Unlike a lot of today's hollow, heavy dance music, the project is not mindless escapism—it's mindful confrontation. In Linney's domain, dance music is medicine for a world that's forgotten how to move through its miseries.
Pulsing with hard-won wisdom, We Dance is that remedy. Linney wastes no time conveying her message, kicking off the EP with its sublime titular track, a euphoric cut where she belts, "We dance for a reason, we move to make sense of the pain." Then comes the spellbinding "Sequoia," a deep house stunner where her vocals soar skyward like the majestic trees it embodies.
Linney leans further into the nature motif in "Daisies," a sonic bouquet where her raw voice cuts through a bassline you can feel in your bones. Here, her lyrics paint vignettes of stubborn hope, exploring our tendency as humans to cling to beauty in unlikely places. That captivating desperation comes to a head in the ensuing track, "Together," a dance anthem where she pleads, "Does it scare you that I’m not afraid of tomorrow? 'Cause you're my escape."
