An official statement from the Mexican tourism board denies that Fyre Festival 2 exists. This goes in direct contradiction to the event’s founder Billy McFarland, who insisted the event is happening May 30th to June 2nd. Supposedly, the event is to take place at Isla Mujeres, a small island off Cancun, Mexico.

Just last week, tickets for the event went on sale with no lineup confirmed. Per the website, tickets range fron $1,400 to $25,000. However, there are premium packages up to $1.1 Million. McFarland insisted on the legitimacy of his dream on the Today Show. Furthermore, Fyre Festival’s official Instagram announced Mexican events team Lostnights would produce it. The company has produced shows which include artists such as Solomun, Michael Bibi, Vintage Culture, and more. In addition, they have produced for Mayan Warrior, and Day Zero.

Nevertheless, they claim contact was made with local officials and authorities to make sure the even will run smoothly. They also state that they secured partnership with top-notch private venues and hotels. But how accurate is this, really?

Tourism Board Statement

Edgar Gasca, representative for the Isla Mujeres tourism directorate, spoke with The Guardian and stated no such arrangements have been made.

“We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist.”

Edgar Gasca

He expressed that he heard the news during a tourism fair in Bogota, Colombia. Moreover, when he spoke with the minister for tourism in Quintana Roo state, as well as the hotels listed on the Fyre Festival site. However, neither had been contacted by the organizers about the event. The Municipal President of Isla Mujeres commented on the issue as well. Atenea Gomez Ricalde claims the only information they had from the festival was online.

Gasca added that this festival screams red flags everywhere. Not only do the coordinates on their website inaccurate, but they have no official municipal authorization to run an event of that magnitude. It seems McFarland thought he could get away with gaining traction from the public without actually requesting the permits until later.

This comes as a surprise to no one as Fyre Festival was a complete catastrophe back in 2017. Music acts canceled and guests were stranded, with lack of organization and accomodations. Consequently, McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison, and charged with fraud. After his release in less than four years of his sentence, he repaid $3 Million to a former investor. Furthermore, an NY court awarded $7,220 to 277 attendees.
