Ibiza is one of those Spanish islands that you will constantly hear people raving about. And even though you will hear so many incredible things about traveling there, Ibiza is left with its own issues to deal with. As of February 20th, the island made a turning point agreement with Airbnb to eliminate all illegal short-term lettings. This decision was a result from an over tourism issue that pushed housing options to become more limited and inflating prices drastically, while locals are left to live in poor environments such as vehicles, tents, and boats.
A long term solution needed to be made for this short-term problem and that’s what Consell d’Eivissa (Ibiza’s Island Council) did when they signed this “historic” agreement. Up to this point, Airbnb has already removed 200 illegal letting from their site, but Ibiza’s council leader, Vicent Marí, expects another 300 to be removed this month. Last year, alcohol laws were changed in many ways for Ibiza and surrounding islands. All these recent changes are an effort to improve the lives of the locals, improve the quality of tourists, protect from environmental damages, and fight against other social challenges.
The president of Consell d’Eivissa, Vicent Marí, thanked Airbnb for its collaboration. The council views multi-family homes, rooms inside apartments, homes with multiple occupancy, camping outside of campsites, and any others not registered to be illegal lettings. Marí says this agreement is “a milestone in the roadmap that we set out more than five years ago to lead a relentless fight against the island’s unregulated [tourist accommodation] supply”.
Joining in on this agreement are Ibiza Tourist Accommodation Association, the Ibiza and Formentera Hotel Business Federation and promotion company Fomento del Turismo. Hopefully this will be the stepping stone needed for Ibiza to be a sustainable destination for tourists that love to experience beautiful beaches, love for music, and an atmosphere that simply cannot be replicated.
