Damian Lazarus Releases Surprise New Album ‘Magickal’

The fifth studio album Magickal via Crosstown Rebels by electronic music visionary Damian Lazarus has been released. Against industry standards, the album comes as a shock drop—bypassing the tradition of staggered single releases and instead providing the whole artistic experience from day one.

With Magickal, I wanted to do things differently. I’ve sought to bypass the current trend of drawn-out single drops and fragmented album experiences. For me, this is about returning to the idea of an album as a complete, cohesive artistic statement—a pinnacle moment rather than an afterthought. After the release, we’ll explore the music further with singles, remixes, and a world tour, where I’m planning to present the album in some fresh, innovative ways. All to be revealed soon. – Damian Lazarus.

The beginning: Day Zero in 2012

Day Zero, Damian’s fabled annual celebration bringing music, environment, and community together, falls in line with the release of the album designed to honor the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012.

Since then, Day Zero has evolved beyond a mere celebration and is now a cultural cornerstone and benchmark for worldwide festival circuit immersive events. Set against the spectacular natural splendor deep in the Mexican jungles of Tulum, Day Zero deftly combines modern production and music with great regard for native culture, history, and customs. Day Zero sets a standard for how modern events could respect ancient traditions in relevant and modern ways by including rituals and customs in its programming while using ecological techniques.

Reflecting the album’s themes of unity, transcendence, and the magical power of connection, this ethos not only inspires Damian’s creative vision and process but also forms the basis for the immersive world of Magickal – so providing the ideal launchpad for the LP.

The new album: Magickal

Designed amid a turning point in Damian’s life, Magickal captures his newly acquired sobriety and changed perspective, thereby guiding emotional depth and clarity into every song. With an outstanding slate of collaborators, the album explores worldwide inspirations while revisiting significant events from Damian’s whole catalog. Highlights include the flamenco-infused “La Hija De Juan Simón” with Spanish pair Méstiza and “Alive,” a mix of pop sensibilities and Damian’s unique sound with the Bloom twins. Along with Mathew Jonson’s virtuoso performances on “Are You Dreaming?” and Zoe Kypri’s lyrical vocals on “So Low,” other notable tracks include the amapiano-inspired “Warrior Dance” featuring Ghanaian singer Jojo Abot, “Falling Down,” a collaboration with TEED and A-Trak.

With brilliant lead single “Searchin” alongside Jem Cooke, whose partnership with Damian spans “Flourish” in 2020, dropping alongside the album and accompanied by a remix from Rekids head honcho, Damian’s ability to weave these emotional touchpoints with inventive rhythms confirms his reputation as a master of musical transcendence.
