On Family Piknik Music (the music label of the beloved French festival), Ukrainian producer Anikey‘s most recent release, “Crosstown Respect,” stands out as a track that brilliantly reflects the present development of indie dance and melodic techno.

The original mix spends no time defining its aims. The backbone of the tune is a strong bassline that threads through a painstakingly created tech-house percussion mix that begs movement right away. This production distinguishes itself by carefully balancing dancefloor utility with emotional depth—a balance that is getting rare in the electronic music scene of today.

Cleverly processed vocal fragments offer an extra layer of suspense as the song moves along, complementing hypnotic synth patterns that develop with great restraint. Anikey’s great awareness of dance floor dynamics is shown by its slow intensification, which produces those priceless moments of expectation defining unique club experiences.

The remix by Marat Mode finishes the bundle by darkening the original. Their take simplifies some of the indie dance components in favor of a more direct, peak-time style. Acid-tinged synthesizer lines provide an additional layer of trippy intensity that is especially useful in the early morning hours – something I personally observed as Tale Of Us wove it into their most recent set.

Although both versions have great value on their own, they go wonderfully together and provide DJs with different tools for various events. While Marat Mode’s remix is specifically designed for those peak-time events when the energy has to be pushed into overdrive, the original mix shines in those twilight hours when audiences are warming up.
